At 75+ my days of working on that stuff are long over. The little work that I do for neighbors, children and grandchildren turns very frustrating working on this new stuff. Yes, I agree, the older is much easier. The older stuff was made to repair and rebuild. All this new stuff is much more cheap throw away. Glad to be out of it. I do really enjoy watching you work, especially concerning the fact that much of my early time was working in the areas where you are. You are very experienced and talented.

What company trains the next generation mechanic? My father was a deere mechanic back in the 60s early 70s and deere had a refreshing school every year for dealers to send their top mechanics too. I remember my father going to Portland, Ore; for the school on the new 30 series tractor. Like Wes here, he thought of his farmers (customers) first. Yes my father worked for a dealer, but he knew who really paid his wages. If the farmer can't afford your wages, how do you plan to eat? Three things you have to have to live: 1, water and food; 2, shelter and 3, clothing. What in life do you do to provide these three?

Same here TheBayoutransplant! I am 81 and have repaired cars and light trucks all of my adult life, and now restrict my work to friends, family and neighbors, which I no longer charge for. I, like you, have a vast fund of knowledge about mechanics. (That inventory would make great conversation. All of that knowledge, that is wasted, outmoded, etc. Like when was the last time any of us saw a new car that was carbureted?) All of which I will carry to my grave. Such is life I guess. I have always loved mechanics and have very few regrets.

@@angrybill I am doing my best to pass on as much as possible to my grandson. He is very interested and is amazed at the tricks and such that I have developed over these years. I really enjoy working on stuff still but this new technology has turned into computers doing the trouble shooting and very specialized equipment to do what little repair that can be done. My 2003 f250 7.3 has more computer stuff than I would like. Like you, I will continue to turn wrenches for as long as possible.

He reminds me of the mechanic I worked for in high school. He was amazing, I remember a guy brought in a 32 Mercury that he had rebuilt. After putting it back together, he messed up the firing order. There were no imprints on the intake showing the firing order either. The mechanic I worked for systematically started unplugging plug wires with his insulated pliers and holding them to various spark plugs. After about 15 minutes of him listening to the motor and rearranging plug wires, he declared it finished. The customer took his car for a ride around the block, he came back beaming. I don't know what the probability of doing that is, I assume it 2^6/8 power, I was simply amazed that he was able to do that. I wish this generation respected blue collar workers more. Everybody seems to think these guys are morons when in reality, it's far from the case.

Funny how a pint of water can wet the entire shop floor and always where one has to lay. Pulling thing's apart followed by a gurgling sound inevitably produces some cuss word's which vary in severity depending on the situation and probably where one is in the world. Here in merry old England I have acquired word's not taught to me in school which have come in handy for such occasions. Staying dry and warm as one get's older is an important part of life, least it is in mine. I see the glitter in the oil before you mentioned it, do I get a medal. Thank you for the post

Whenever I am using printed books I throw them in my copy machine and make copies of all the relevant pages I need and when I am done I throw them away.
When it comes to tools having a lathe makes all the difference because it's so easy to make specialized tooling for jobs and it's much cheaper than buying the tools. I make a lot of seal installers and bearing installers and tapered ring compressors. I get as much scrap metal as possible so I don't have to buy expensive material. When I make liner pullers I usually take my plasma cutter with circle cutter and cut out a circle close to size out of scrap 1" steel plate and finish it in the lathe.

"Torque angles", make no sense at all to me either. There was nothing wrong at all with torque settings in Nm or lb.ft. In fact, I would argue the old way is far more precise and accurate provided the torque wrench was calibrated. Torqe angles, don't have a click stop or confirmed stop, unless the gauges have improved since I last worked on one those type engines twenty years ago.I just won't touch one now.
Anyway, always good see you plotting a win on stubborn stuff young man!

A person buys tools to fix something and another person likes it better without paying for it - which is called thief - pisses me off but they will do it and not even feel bad about it - as long as it's for free -a person just has to mark his tools in some form and that may not help
