- In today's video I decided to bring you on a journey of a photography self assignment on film. This 35mm film challenge I took on in a single day with my Canon T50 point and shoot film camera loaded with Kodak Tri-x film stock. I talk about my experience with analog photography and my take away from this self assigned practice.

The meditative quality of shooting film is something that continues to revive the passion I have for this hobby-- because its really not about the result, oddly enough. It feels more like excavating a beautiful fossil from the quarry of the world, where the only editing I will have is minor polishing of a naturally beautiful object. The skill comes in extracting the fossil, the photo, from the mundane morass. Whereas in digital photography, it feels like I am hyperfocused on the result, because I have to do so much manual intervention to get it to look how I envisoned.
Also, the scarcity mindset when working with film is something I totally get, but once you allow yourself to buy a roll a week (about the same as getting two drinks from starbucks) then you can remove that scarcity somewhat, and just focus on enjoying shooting. Giving yourself a quota to shoot for is also good because then it removes the scarcity altogether, and forces you to go out and find those photos.
Very well put and quite poetic even! Appreciate the intentional comment! I totally agree with the last bit as well.
Really nice video ! The mood of it, the narrative...Really appreciated it ! Keep on doing stuff this quality and the success will arrive soon
You’ve certainly inspired me with this short video, I hope you have a great day
Glad to hear!
Couldn’t agree more that film makes you slow down & appreciate different subjects. Especially with b&w I find myself seeking specific light or symmetry before I really commit.
Also those PC shots 😍 great video man!
Thanks so much for the support Tom! It means a lot!🙌
bro u got some bangers in this vid...even the shot that u "missed" was so sick...got yourself a new sub looking forward to more of your work my friend!
Many thanks! I believe this comment and a comment of a friend of mine in person may have sparked a topic for a new video!
@@Topher_wigums lets gooo!! love to hear it
Its all a mindset the film doesn't make you do certain things you having the thought that its film is what makes you slow down but you can apply that to digital as well
A fair assessment!
It's been years since I shot film, and I've been itching to get back to it lately. I'm old enough that I learned on film (before digital cameras really existed) and it's a totally different experience. Loved seeing your perspective on it. I also totally get the "anxious energy" while shooting. That resonated with me immediately. I almost think that not being able to see the results immediately may be a blessing in disguise. Now I need to get my hands on a camera and some film!
Glad you could get something from this! I totally agree with your last statement. ALSO YES get out there and make something!!
You deserve way more subs my dude. Nice video work, nice photos. Agree with the sentiments you expressed here. Film always seems precious (and yeah it's expensive) and so I also tend to let rolls sit for way too long. It's nice sometimes to say- here's this roll, I'm going to shoot the whole thing today, or this weekend. Also it _is_ really strange how we tend to take different photos with film.
Thanks for the sentiment 💪
Great idea and project, I can subscribe, that film photography is slowing you down in an good way and makes you more observant of small details! One tiny correction, T50 is not a Rangefinder (like f. e. Leica M) nor a point and shoot (like f. e. Olympus Mju). It's an SLR...However you got really nice pictures, very inspiring!
You are correct! I was just talking about some general difference in film photography that you don't get from shooting digital! I'm also by no means a film expert though either 😂 it is still quite new to me and I'm constantly asking friends that shoot film much more questions all the time. However when it comes to the T50 I usually just throw it into it's Auto setting and the only thing I set on it is the speed so I tend to just say point and shoot just because I don't worry about manual settings at all... I do appreciate the information though!
I will admit, shooting film isn't really something you can replicate, even with fancy plugins and A.I.
Great video!
No matter how hard I try to emulate it in my digital photos it never has the same feeling as the real deal 🙃
1 roll per day! GO TOPH!
That might be a bit too expensive for my taste 😂
@@Topher_wigums Gotta start bulk loading + developing at home!
How much u guys pay for development + scanning? Me around 13-15
I have two locations near me, one of which charges 11 and some change for dev + scans and the other charges around 14-22 for the same
@@Topher_wigums wow let's not even speak about film prices hahaha, we freaking love this 🤷🏽♂️
