Dude! Metalhead here... Never cared nothing for rap in the 90's, not a bit. UNTIL.....Walking past my brother-in-law with Gangsta's Paradise pounding out his boom box and it STOPPED ME IN MY TRACKS. This will always be the song that turned my heart around and made me realize there is a raw visceral beauty in rap that cannot be defined....Only felt. Peace out!

@@tonybennett4159 - I already have that but it's so vastly different from Coolio's version in tone and style, that Coolio's doesn't simply translate as a word-edited version of Stevie's, in my opinion. Kinda like Sinéad O'Connor's version of Nothing Compares 2 U as opposed to Prince's original. Stevie's version hit me with the pleasant melody (I didn't know English at the time so the lyrics were irrelevant to my opinion in both cases) but Coolio's hit me with everything all-together.

And I've just recently come to realize the effects of growing up/living that way...in the hood, no money, broken home, none of us kids graduated high school...the impact those things have on you is far-reaching. These kids need a person in their life like Michelle Pfeiffer's character in "Dangerous Minds". Someone to stand up for them and teach them how to love themselves. Kinda personal to me, but the song was a profound moment in music history.

White Montana dude here had a cassette of Gangsta's Paradise when I was young...Gangsta's Paradise and Too Hot are what I listened to most. Other than that, classic rock and metal.
Edit: Forgot to add how hard this song hits. Coolio wasn't "ahead of his time", but it seems like he was from pointing out the cause of problems, not just the symptom.

One of my all time favourite songs. Not only is that chorus killer but the lyrics are just so meaningful.
It was released tied in to the movie ‘dangerous minds’ which starred Michelle pfeiffer (sp?) which is why she is in the video and clips from that movie are interspersed

The coolest thing about this being such a massive hit is that is forced people to hear and learn about whats happening to people in environments they didn’t know about or purposefully ignored. For instance I was a 7 year old white kid when it came out (Upstate NY) and I always liked it, the ending choir part always gives me chills

i'm subscribed and my first time reacting to you. This song came out in the early 90's...I was born in 72, so I grew up when "rap" was coming out. I grew up in San Bernardino (San Berdo) i.e. The Inland Empire. Many lines Coolio does has way more deep meaning. What I believe is there is 2 types of education. School education and street education and if you can combine both an individual has much more power. Ervin C

This song was a lot to me. I was growing up a white girl in the projects at the time. All my friends growing up in elementary was black. Bad neighborhood, but not horrible- until someone gang raped and beat up a Mom two doors down, and My Mom fought hard to get me and her out because she saw it deteriorating. The things this song is about I saw first hand, without being caught up in it because I had moved. I loved this movie and this song because it showed that people that are caught up in that life usually aren't evil. They just haven't been left choices that would lead anywhere, or influenced by what they grew up around.

The intro and chorus you like is taken from a 1970s(?) Stevie Wonder song called "Pastime Paradise" which is also a song about prejudice and segregation. LOVE Coolio's version though, he will be very very missed 🙏
