- A friendly local guy I met at the mall in Makassar offered to take me to experience some local food.
I was keen to try Coto Makassar, a local beef soup. I asked Victor if he knew a good place to go eat it and he suggested Rumah Makan Ranggong, an old family run restaurant.
It was one of those local restaurants that had loads of pictures on their wall of famous people who had visited, including the old president of Indonesia.
The Coto Makassar soup is a broth made from ground up peanuts, and beef meat is added. There's also the option to add various organs such as heart, brain, liver, lung and tongue.
I opted for meat, heart and tongue. It seemed like a good combination.
I liked the taste of the peanuty soup and the beef meat was good quality. The tongue was a bit chewy, as you would expect tongue to be, but still nice. The heart, I wasn't a big fan of. It was very dry.
After doing a bit of sightseeing at Fort Rotterdam, a 17th century Dutch fort, we went to another popular local restaurant for another popular local food.
Pisang Ijo is made from banana wrapped in a green dough made of flour, water, and green coloring from suji or pandan leaves. The banana is then steamed and served with a sweet sauce made of coconut milk, sugar, and starch.
It's served over shaved ice, making it the type of cold, sweet and refreshing dessert that is perfect to eat in a tropical climate like there is in Sulawesi.
Thanks to Mr Victor for taking me to these awesome local restaurants.

come to Manado Mr.Dale, North sulawesi.
Hi Dale, what's an interesting vlog! I think in 0:14 Mr. Victor said "Ewako, ewako!". It's a popular word from Makassar/Bugis that usually used by Makassar people to keep our spirit up 😊
You are really lucky to be able to explore some places, Asia is a continent that has a very diverse culture, and Indonesia is one of the richest in it, you can see and feel different culture in almost every island and province.
Great video, hope you enjoy the journey
Oh no..only 35 minutes of Dale? 😢
Signing petition for the vlogs to be atleast 1 hour!
agree
+1
Kesian panjang ngedit nya nanti 😂
@@AmanaLaks gak banyak ngedit si dale,
Iam Indonesian foodvlogger from Solo. I'll vlog this ranggong restaurant later.. I love legendary family business restaurant
and muda mudi for jalangkote and pisang ijo.. nice. Thanks to victor
Good morning Dale, viewing from Southern California.
Been watching you for many years.
Videos all so much fun to watch.
Interesting videos.
Unique
I am a big fan.
You talk to us viewers all the time so we feel we are there with you.
Blessings 🙏 to you where ever you go.
I think the cashier at warung coto Makassar didn't ask for tips nor trying to get extra money. Like some other Indonesians, he just want something as a souvenir / memento which he is gonna keep n brag to others the story behind the memento 😁 due his poor english n nervousness because he met the famous yer men, he can't explain it well 😁
Its crazy how much i love your travel videos, i could watch them all day!
very nice Dale!
thank you for the lovely content🌸
How brave of you to eat offal that most of us wouldn't eat!
There is also a 17th-century Dutch fort in Tainan, the hometown of director Ang Lee, which is still well preserved.
If you are interested, you can visit there!
Watching that dessert ice made me so happy, the color is so beautiful, thank you very much for sharing! 👍🤩🙏
Actually Roterdam fort was built by Gowa Kingdom but the architec was from Potugese which had a good relationship with Gowa
And Portuguese also teach Gowa how to make Cannon
@@aliefmuhammad4413 Thanks a lot for letting me know! You are very nice!
Dale, I really enjoy those videos from Indonesia. I lived in Yogyakarta 15 years ago and traveled some around the country, so it’s good to see it hasn’t changed much. I miss it a lot.
Dale you are so lucky that you have this passion and time for travelling around the world . Love ur vids 😁
15:17 I didn't expect him to know that, which surprised me. I really appreciate you knowing our history 🙏🏻
Amazing video documenting indonesias finest foods and what the spectacular and scenic country can offer to tourists ❤
Who liked my comment
Thank u
Fort Rotterdam is a 17th-century fort in Makassar on the island of Sulawesi in Indonesia. It is a Dutch fort built on top of an existing fort of the Gowa Kingdom. The first fort on the site was constructed by the a local sultan in around 1634, to counter Dutch encroachments. The site was ceded to the Dutch under the Treaty of Bongaya, and they completely rebuilt it between 1673 and 1679. It had six bastions and was surrounded by a seven meter high rampart and a two meter deep moat.
The fort was the Dutch regional military and governmental headquarters until the 1930s. It was extensively restored in the 1970s and is now a cultural and educational centre, a venue for music and dance events, and a tourist destination.
terimakasih dale, saya sebagai orang makassar bangga terhadap kamu karena telah percaya untuk datang ke kota dan negara saya
Strange to see yer man riding a dope car instead of the usual traditional rickshaw and whatnot 😂. Nice vid as always Dale!
Great vlog bro. Very nice of Mr Victor for taking you around and he seems a sponge of knowledge. Brilliant as always. Thanks bro.
That soup looks incredible! and the people sound so nice. I am jealous of your experience! Hopefully one day, me and my partner can visit Makassar on our channel! 😍
Come to Makassar and I Will be your tour guide in my city and show the incredible of Makassar
Jalangkote is my favourite snack it's also called pastel in other regions of Indonesia sometimes they fill in with other stuffs such chicken, egg or even meats.
Nice to see that you not just visit and eat, you also explain and knows the places history, no gimmick react, the best
Great video as always, Dale!!
You need to upload at least 2 videos per week. I like watching these videos man.
Hi Dale. really enjoyed your videos. I appreciate you because the way you make conversations with other people(specially locals)is very nice..keep it up...Enjoy your life..✌💕
The dude of the restaurant was so nervous he looked like an Npc 😂
hello Dale, I love your videos :) the 'pudding like' white stuff in the 'pisang ijo' is called 'bubur sumsum' -- made with rice flour and coconut milk :) it's rice flour that gives the pudding-like consistency. btw I hope you visit my hometown Bukittinggi in West Sumatra :)
Loving the Indonesia vlogs!!
Dale is going everywhere to taste amazing food... But it seems not enough for Indonesia... 😂
Keep going, Dale !!!
So nice that you are exploring Makassar... I lived for four years there.

YER MAN with another brilliant video!!
Dale, the transportation you ask (rickshaw with motor on the back) called bentor (becak motor)
Amazing video dale keep it up mate 🧡
Great video, Dale! 👍
Wonderful to see you post!!
Take care.
Lov seeing your adventures
Awesome vlog keep UP the great work ❤
He actually ordered you liver instead of heart by mistake. It's because we translate "heart" into "hati" when we use it as a metaphor for "feelings" or "soul", despite the organ "heart" translated directly to "jantung" in Indonesian
They colours suit you better fella 😉🤣
I've been watching you since we'll before 100k subs mate just noticed you're on 2 mil!! Well done man love it 🏴
Welcome to my second home! Please eat while in Makassar, it's known to be a foodie city... Coto, Konro, Ikan Bakar, Pallubasa, Sop Saudara, Pisang Epe, Es Pisang Ijo, Barongko, etc. Etc. 🤤🤤🤤
This is one of the best coto in Makassar... I always dine here when I'm in Makassar
my go to choice for coto is meat and lungs, and they're usually no more than 10 thousand rupiah (the ones by the side of the road, the sanitary is questionable, but the price is student-friendly) Also, i've only ever been to Toraja once, but i recommend going to Puncak Lolai, negeri di atas awan, i went there at sunrise and the view is incredible. Kete kesu is also where you can see the burial site (inside a cave). i'm not Torajan so there's not a lot i can recommend 😅
awesome place and food, lucky you!
I'm glad you enjoyed the Coto, it's really delicious and there's other type of Coto too!
i love you
I also love you
Love your videos ❤❤
Dale, Im from indonesia. and im so sorry that i have to tell you that something is incorrect in the translation in the Coto Makasar Restaurant. Your guide not order you the beef heart, instead he order you beef liver. The heart shape is called “Hati” in Indonesia. But the heart organ is called “Jantung”. On the other hand, liver organ is also called “Hati”.😢
Thank you for sharing your travels! Very interesting to see other cultures,I hope I can travel and experience some of them myself!
"Hati" in Indonesia can means 2 things.
Hati (Organ) = Liver
Hati (Heart Emoji/Symbol ♥) = Heart
Jantung (Organ 🫀) = Heart
I think your friend mistranslated it and mixed up the 2. What you probably ate was liver.
yes when dale said heart and he ordered hati (liver), this friend seems to mix things up lol
Si bapak kacamata itu bahasa inggrisnya maksa, organ hati disebut heart wkwkw.
Udah gitu, pake minta oleh2 lagi dari Skotlandia.
Yes, I speak Malay and get things mixed up sometimes. Hati is liver. And for Malays, the liver is the seat of emotions. So they say 'sakit hati' (sick livered) for downhearted.
Terus... Hati hati = be careful 😂😂 lucu bgt bahasa indonesia.
@@core.cultures bukan bahasa Indonesia nya yg lucu, tapi orangnya yg kepedean maksa pake bahasa Inggris hehe.
My fav food usually is beef. I impressed Mr. Dale Philip also a beef lover. Amazing blue car at the start of the video.
Oh wow, I actually am from Rotterdam. So cool! I will hopefully visit and take a photo at the fort in my Feyenoord shirt 😍
In Makassar, there is a tourist attraction whose name is Fort Rotherdam, a relic of the Dutch, which is still guarded in Makassar
You can find jalangkote in other place in Indonesia, it called "Pastel", it actually from dutch
Keep up with your vlogs Dale! It doesn't matter where you go, I'll always enjoy watching your videos. It's fun to see you explore the different culture and foods 😁
Thank you for ur new vlog in indonesiaaa
The soup looked so delicious!
Always love your content bro
Finally, another video, always waitin for ya mate!
You need to add sweet soy sauce, salt, spicy sambal and lime to make coto makassar tastefull... dont forget to eat palu basa gang serigala(more light taste of beef soup) and konro bakar(roast beef with peanut sauce)
when referring to the organ, most people in Indonesia get confused the heart with the liver (when they are translated into English). In this conversation, what they mean with the word "heart" was actually the "liver"
The Dutch definitely already were in Indonesia in 1667, Dale... They first set foot in Indonesia in 1596. I think this fort was even built to defend against the Dutch.
I have been waiting for your content
loving your videos and i love heart soup mom makes it in winter nothing better carrots beef heart in a tomato type soup warms the soul
I am loving these vlogs, honest and informative, and will be useful prior to my planed visit to indonesia, only thing I find strange ,is a Scotsman not showing any bars or alcoholic beverages 😊
I don't think he drinks.
He doesn’t drink.
Yes Skotlandia people's are Healthy
I really respect the fact that he does not drink alcohol, probably the reason why he is so honest, humble, down to earth, and very likeable. Most people who drink (90% of the time) become rowdy, rude, obnoxious and rather unpleasant people... Good on ya Dale for keeping it sober 🎉
He always said it's haram, even he is not muslim
congrats on your 2M subscriber dale! 🎉
This man doesnt realize that he ate one of the best food you can eat on the world . The broth is somthing special
Your videos are the best
Another banger dale ,thanks 👍
That BMW looks awesome
I hope i can buy one 😂

He Will go to Toraja which Toraja is mountain village
Terimakasih orang baik sudah membawa dia berjalan2 dengan aman. 👍👍👍
Good afternoon , dale. 😎😻 keep healthy. so good looking with that shirt bytheway
Looks really tasty! I think the meat is the dry piece, the chewy one is the heart and the tongue is usually the tenderest.
I think they were miss understood by saying that the heart, i think that was the liver.
@@ikhwanridhani7804yes because hati can mean heart and liver, and nobody sells heart.
Very good video and review soup/food in makasar.. Kipidap bro…
