Exploring Surabaya - East Java's Big City 🇮🇩

- I spent a day exploring Surabaya, Indonesia's 2nd largest city.
I started the day off with some famous local food. Rawon is a beef soup that originates from East Java and uses the Keluak as its main ingredient, to give the broth to give a very unique flavour.
I researched for a good place to try this local delicacy, and found there was a restaurant near my hotel with a high rating, called Rawon Setan.
The bowl of soup I was served at Rawon Setan didn't look too appealing but it tasted surprisingly delicious. The meat was high quality too. I'd definitely eat that again.
With belly full of the local soup, I had plenty of energy to explore the city. I ended up visiting the massive submarine that's a popular landmark and tourist attraction in Surabaya.
The submarine was once used by the Indonesian Navy and has now been turned into a museum. I was lucky enough to be able to explore the whole submarine by myself.
After the sightseeing I was hungry for more local Indonesian cuisine. I went on the hunt for the local satay, called 'Sate Kolopo' which is satay that's covered in grated coconut while it cooks on the grill.
I found another highly rated restaurant thanks to Google Maps and took a long walk there, stopping by a street vendor for some durian juice along the way. If you haven't tried durian, it's a type of smelly fruit that you either love it or hate it.
The 'Sate Kolopo' at Sate Kelopo Ondomohen didn't look too appealing, just like the soup I had earlier on. But just like that soup, it was surprisingly tasty. I started off with just the chicken satay and then tried a beef one with bone marrow, which was incredible.
I was feeling like some dessert and remembered Cak Faiz, who I met on my first night in Surabaya. He has a stall selling local porridge desserts. I enjoyed his Pisang Ijo before and remembered that he also had a dessert called Kacang Ijo that I didn't have a chance to try.
I was going to walk there but saw a friendly Becak driver who was looking for some work. He offered me a fair price and off we went.
The way his vehicle is set up, is with a motorbike at the back and a passenger car at the front. So you get a full unobstructed view. I'd love to do a full day tour of a city in one of these things.
At Mr Faiz dessert stall, I finally tried the Kacang Ijo, which is a porridge made from beans. It was cold, sweet and delicious. Just what I needed as Surabaya is one hot city to be exploring in.
This was my last day in Surabaya. Next destination is Makassar in South Sulawesi.

Go to padang bro..
Yo Mr. Suwarno is such an mvp for giving the local price. Good thing you reward him, an honesty like that deserve some recognition
Taktik yang bagus itu, ngasih harga asli kalau sih bule baik bakal dikasih tip banyak
sehat selalu Mr. Suwarno
@@mbahbecak3668iya, daripada ngasih harga tinggi pasti si Dale malah kesel
@@mbahbecak3668 bule itu bakal kasih berkali kali lipat kalau di treat beneran.. kalau di scam selesai sudah karirmu 😁
@@zacfarro8678 aku yakin pak suwarno gk kepikiran sampai sana. Dia hanya natural saja
Sate klopo sate covered with shredded coconut. Sate otot is made from tendon part of meat. Kacang ijo =mung bean. Indonesian rickshaw= Becak. Surabaya is heaven for foodies. You should stay longer in Surabaya Dale, many more street foods to explore. Have great days in Indonesia.
Indonesia actually seems like a great country to visit. People seem friendly and relaxed.
Yes😁🙏
Keren pak suwarno, anda sgt jujur dlm memberi tarif. Semoga lancar rejeki & Sehat selalu pak
It's nice to give him 50k it's kind rare to find honest rickshaw driver in the world isn't
Your bahasa Indonesia is getting expert Dale. And rawon will always be one of surabayan favorite food. It's a comfort food for us wherever we go or stay 😊 You can find rawon in other city too, but not as much as in east java.
Agree
Rawon from malaysia!!!!
is it pricy? 45k? 😅
@@maulanabastian9576 iya pricey soalnya rawon setan terkenal bgt kan dan porsi dagingnya mayan gede juga sih

It's always very interesting to watch Dale's videos. So down to earth, really humble and really connects to earth roots wherever he goes. You can also see how genuine the videos are. You can see if it's really enjoyable or if its annoying. It makes all the experience very fun to watch!
Love this Surabaya vlog series Dale because I’m from Surabaya, living in New York City right now. Watching this make me miss my hometown a lot! The food, the people, the atmosphere are just too unique compared to other cities in Indonesia. And Glad that you met Pak Faiz again, that guy is the coolest.

@@AV-kl3dx namaste brother, as an indonesian i can tell you we do have a deep history with India and it's culture way before the birth of the nation. So it make sense to have some loan or influence words from Indian language:)
@@AV-kl3dx _kepala_ and _kapal_ are Indonesian words derived from Sanskrit, and _kelapa_ itself is a tongue-twist from _kepala_ itself, due to similar shape of cranium to coconut shell, so yea those three words might related to Indian languages as well, but the ultimate origin for those Indonesian words are Sanskrit
You have definitely put Surabaya on my list of places to visit. 👍🏻 Everybody is so friendly. If I ever make it there, I will definitely go and meet Mr Faiz.

Definitely one of my favourites. Up there as one of the best vlogs. Dale is a legend. Proper cracks me up with his one liners.
Bro your Indonesia series is awesome. Try to make more videos on exploring the outskirts rather than main cities.
Loving your videos from India.
❤❤❤
Dale baek bener.. ada vlogger bule lain malah kliatan ngirit,, nawar malah... Dale dermawan sama orang kecil... Makasih dale
Tp emng murah kak itu bpknya jujur makanya bule langsung mau biasa kan ada orang asing kesempatan harga sekian pasti mau gitu mikirnya bpknya mikirnya takut kemahalan makanya jujur aja deh nnti orng klo baik jg pasti kasih lebih gitu mikirnya
Dale jago jg bargain (nawar)
Buat Dale juga kalo harganya terasa abnormal bakal nawar, bbrp kali dia nawar divideo sebelumnya krn biasalah liat turis dikasi harga abnormal.
Dale banyak duitnya jago main poker dia 😂
Your travel vlogs are relaxing to me somehow, Dale. Your interaction with locals is genuine & very informative too on local foods. What a way to enjoy life! Nice channel. Hope you get more subscribers, well deserved.
Wow...your tour is perfect today, the food good and the man you find is full of kindness... that's why calling wonderful Indonesia...😊😊😊
Dale uploading a new video = my mood booster 🇮🇩❤
you indonesian?
Watching your ordering process makes me dizzy, haha!
If you put the rice in that soup, it will be more delicious!
What a pity for that abandoned building, it would be beautiful if built according to plan!
Watch the way you cross the road, believe that there is nothing you can't do!
Very happy to visit the interior of the submarine, thank you very much for sharing! 👍🤩🙏🙌
Thank you for visiting Surabaya Dale. You made this city go to international as a good city and yummy food. Take care and good luck for next destination ❤❤❤
i'm from Surabaya but now i've moved to Kalimantan, Dale. When i opened youtube and saw your vlog in Surabaya, i was reminded of my hometown. Sate klopo is one of my favourite foods. Thanks and good luck to you, Dale.
Surabaya is an underrated city. Unlike Jakarta though it lacks a relatively decent public transport system, which makes it a little tricky to get around! And trying to cross those busy roads! I almost got run over once. Looking forward to watching this video!
Not even all Jakarta is covered by decent mass transportation facilities like LRT though
@@KapitanVladimirArsenyevbut jakarta has already covered by transjakarta or busway and KRL commuter line that has a system like lrt and mrt, the real mrt lrt ones just a new system people in jakarta still most using the busway and krl
because most Indonesians prefer to have their own motorbikes and cars, but don't worry, there is a lot of public transportation in Indonesia, maybe you don't know the route yourself?
from the Rawon restaurant to the Submarine is pretty far for us as Surabayans to walk🤣
Strong feet Scottish man 🤣👍
I like the way you surprised the all guy in this vlog with extra money. you have no idea that would be helpful for them. Thanks Dale. You are so kind. Greetings from Surabaya from your subscriber!

Great video as always! I hope you enjoy visiting Indonesia, can't wait for the next trip sir.
Nice to see you enjoyed the rich of indonesian cultures..every places have different tribe, language, dance, food dishes,etc..,but as you know all united with one name..we are INDONESIAN

Always be my ya man fav youtuber and vlogger 🤘🏼, always coming even too late😁
i'm not surabayan, but i think surabaya is not a tourism attractions city like malang, my town jogja, or bali, it's like regular south east asian city..i've been there some times, and so surprised people there can handle foreigners..east javanese food is great and i believe everybody from around the world will enjoy..
Kota Asia Tenggara Biasa? Coba Main Kesurabaya Dan Singgahlah Untuk Waktu 1minggu Atau 1bulan saya jamin anda bakal dibuat jatuh cinta dengan kota Surabaya.
Surabaya Sangat Ramah Jiwa Kekeluargaannya Itu Sangat Erat.
Saya Sendiri Bukan Orang Surabaya Melainkan Orang Blora Jawa Tengah
People in Surabaya especially of older generation are generally warm & very friendly. They are not only warm to foreigners, but to fellow locals too. However the younger generation of Surabayans are largely just like Jakartans.. just "mind their own business" like people in big cities.
It’s amazing 👏👏👏food blogger. Surabaya is such a great place with a lot of famous-known food to enjoy and Dale is such a kind , friendly and loyalty person👍👍👍
you indonesian?
Thankyou dale for visiting surabaya city,i hope you enjoyed...
Wow, can't wait for your Makassar video. Hope you had fun jalan jalan in there cause it's not really known for it's friendliness to pedestrian
Aside from that, hoped you tried Bakso Ian, Mie Titi, Nasi Goreng Niagara, Nasi Kuning Mbak Mun, and Sop Lidah to name a few
What I’ve noticed is Indian, Pakistani and Indonesians always help each other, one business owner will happily guide you to another if they sell what you want, doesn’t happen in many other cultures I think that’s why when they come to the uk etc the do really well as they work together and help each other massive lesson to be learned there !
Fu
Dale, thank you for this one. No one seems to travel here (unless staying over for Bromo or airport) but we got immersed absolutely loved it!!
Seller in blue shirt and white shorts is such a humble and down to earth guy im really glad to see you two met again 💪🏼
Lovely
Yep. Mr. Faiz the ice seller. Cool guy who can speak more than 1 language. Used to be guide.

very exciting, thank you for visiting again in Indonesia, a little description about Makassar, there is a food called Soto Makassar, and also coffee which is quite famous and the making of pinisi boats is also famous there, maybe you can try exploring and traditional culture is also very good

Wow. Surabaya is such an underrated city right Dale? Love seeing your friendship with Mr Faiz tho. Keep up the good work!
so natural, i like your videos, specially the one in surabaya
Dale out of all the food you had in Surabaya witch was your favourite and why loved the video especially when you filmed inside the submarine very interesting.
17:43 From what I can understand, for tactical reasons, the firing mechanism may not be inside the actual torpedo loading bay. While an engineer may be able to fire a torpedo if instructed, that job of firing or giving the command to fire would be a job for someone like a CTO which is a chief tactical officer, or the captain in charge of the ship, or something like that. Because engineers don't generally decide when to fire, because firing is an order- that's usually a job for someone higher up.
Woahhh im proud with surabayan people that's give real price same as local tourist. Its good local wisdom, btw take care or ypur next trip Sir Dale. Hope you come again in next future 🙌
When I participated in the 'Cak & Ning' competition in Surabaya in 2007, I presented an idea to improve tourism in Surabaya by creating a kind of night market on Tunjungan street, and I was very happy to see that it has been realized now. Rek ayo rek, mlaku-mlaku nang Tunjungan.
You and mr.faiz have a very exciting conversation bro... Succes for your chanel.... Hehehehh
My fav youtuber is back ..... Big fan ☺️ from Kohima Nagaland India 🇮🇳
So happy you enjoy rawon, don't worry you can find rawon on every place in Indonesia, but it will have different taste because they probably used different spices. The one you taste is the original taste
Love to watching you everytime dale, keep going to more adventure in indonesia🙌❤
Really enjoy to watch this video! Surabaya the place to be!
Hi Dale, love your vlogs.
Next time you visit Surabaya you must go to Bromo - Ranu Kumbolo Mountain. You can ask Bule Bolang to conquer Ranu Kumbolo Mountain, it is really beautiful mountain with lake.
Another options you can try Kawah Ijen mountain.
Thx Dale for showing the sub, few times i went there never had a chance to see the sub. Oh yeah, next time please go inside the Kampung area ( small narrow street area ) . It will be much more fun experience. !!
