Yep. Connery was initially portrayed as stupid like other celebs, but evolved into a figure who knows the correct responses but wants to make Trebek's life miserable.
It is such a shame that the real Sean Connery didn’t do an appearance with dueling Connery’s picking on Trebek

His impression is pure garbage. Didn't get anything of the voice or mannerisms of Trebek. The premise that they are dumb wears thin real fast.

@@dannysunay8099 i was watching SNL live from the days of Dan Ackroyd and John Belushi. This skit had some good impressions. But the fact is Ferrell stinks at impressions. He's more of a yell and scream and run around in his underwear type of humor.
The moment I saw "Therapists" I knew the joke that was waiting.

You can clearly see Sean growing slowly darker in this one, Later to become Trebek's arch nemesis.
This was the first Celebrity Jeopardy! sketch without Norm Macdonald, and Darrell Hammond had been in the first three sketches as Sean Connery, Phil Donahue and John Travolta. It was decided to revive his Connery character and have him start trolling Will Ferrell's Alex Trebek, and the rest was history.
"And the show has reached a new low" I always die at that part. Will puts so much weight on it, you feel the disappointment 🤣
Norm was the one who originally came up with the idea to parody Celebrity Jeopardy, without him we wouldn't have one of the funniest reoccurring sketches on SNL. RIP, Turd Ferguson!
There's actually an interview where they talk about this sketch actually being stolen from SCTV, but they had on the comedian from SCTV who came up with it and he gave them permission to do a duplicate.

@@edwardsisson3580 I remember Eugene Levy parodying as Alex Trebek in a high school student version of Jeopardy. The "contestants" would answer the questions before he finished, would ring their buzzer and say they didn't and other stuff, p*ssing "Trebek" off and disqualifying everyone. It was a pretty funny sketch, much more innocent than SNL though.
That Jeff Golbulm impression was spot on...

It's refreshing to see Will Ferrell as the decent reasonable guy.
That's pretty much all he does though, isn't it? Play straight men in comedy sketches? As opposed to, say, Christopher Walken, who is always the eccentric and absurd element. It seems that way to me.

This skit improved immensely with the passage of time. At the end, Darrell Hammond was nailing it.

I always thought these earlier ones were way funnier but i may be in the minority. My favorite is Phil Donahue, Burt Reynolds and Marlon Brando
Jonathan Jones yeah at this stage, they were still trying to be somewhat grounded in reality. Later on it got more and more absurdly over the top.
