    At around @13:00 John Pizzarelli mentions Joe Pass coming to the family home and trying to figure out how to play on Bucky's seven string. I went to a Joe Pass Master Class in the early 1990's. After an hour of lecture/demonstration, Joe had each attendee come up to play and get his critique. Chicago guitarist Dick Curtis went first and began playing "What Is This Thing Called Love". Joe stopped him immediately and demanded to know "...what the hell kind of guitar is that?" Dick had a seven string that was an older 1940's Gibson L-7 he got at a garage sale and had Bob Benedetto add a seven string neck. Dick asked Joe "Wanna try it?" Joe said "No - I got enough problems with just six strings!"

    I was fortunate to meet John Pizzarelli last year at the elmhurst Jazz festival. After his show I went up to him, mentioned that his new guitar was just like my 30s es 250 built by Gibson and sold by Montgomery wards which was kinda like his brand new guitar. On the spot he not only let me try his guitar but he gave me a 7 string lesson. It was so hard to wrap my head around it even though I could imagine it. If you're reading this John thank you. I hope to meet him again someday.

    John's older sister was in my class through elementary school and Jr. Hi. I went over to their house a few times; I didn't really know John since he was a few years younger, but I knew their father was a professional guitarist. I don't know if John was playing at that age, but it never occurred to me he would be famous in his own right. This is the first time I have seen him play. Amazing stuff. Very sweet collaboration with Bill Frisell.

    How am I finding this now seven years after it was posted? Lovely stuff I must say. Bill was about my age during this recording. What a tasty player. John is a fine guitarist himself. I love it when two musicians are able to anticipate each other and change up their direction to match up or offset what the other plays, and these two guys did a great job of that on this day.

  • @BernieHollandMusic
    @BernieHollandMusic Před 4 lety +3

    This is just so wonderful - to hear them speak with such respect about so many wonderful players of the past who are completely unknown to the younger generations - when I hear them play it is like listening to a dialogue - each listening intently to the other and responding with eloquence and grace - their knowledge and experience speaks through the music they make together here - and Bill reminding us that even when we abandon the things we cherish - if we feel true remorse, they will eventually come back to us - just like when you finish the song - everything comes back home - and for John, what great good fortune in having had a father like Bucky - watching stuff like this is uplifting - it is inspiring - and provides a great diversion from the hellish times we are experiencing right now - better times are coming - we will get through this - together.

  • @pickinstone
    @pickinstone Před 9 lety +8

    Bucky is such a warm soul. I had a long conversation with him about picks and strings and he spoke to me like a person and not as a nobody. I have seen Bill live, but never spoke with him. His warmth comes out through his playing. I like the moments where you can see how they dig on each other's playing. Two different worlds, but amazing...

    such an interesting contrast in styles and approach to space. you can really hear their influences in both their soloing and comping. JP clearly coming out of that Bucky P approach of filling things up and several different "big" chords per measure.....and BF w his spare Jim Hall approach.....leaving all that space...and playing little two or three voice shell chords.

    so nice video...so beautiful and pure. as a music/guitar student myself I'm like I'm there with them!! love for music,, love for guitar,,communicating with music..John's version of 'All of Me' was a reference of the tune that is the very first jazz standard I learned..he is one of the first jazz guitarist I ever got to know since I learn jazz and seriously listen to jazz guitar players. I can't forget the first time listening his solos with scats.. for me he was like SRV of jazz guitar.. he sings great too. love his fluent melodic bop lines and killing chromatic chord solos..especially love his guitar-piano-bass trio with Ray Kenndy. few monthes ago I bought his album 'Knowing You' and I heard lot of 'raresung' standards..
    Bill is one of my heros too.. I get many ideas and inspiriations from him.. from improvising concepts to songwriting.. he can fit everywhere. with his style kept. can't forget Bass Desire works and works with Jim Hall and../ Grace Under Pressure with John Scofield, of courese his own works his trio and quartet..earlier groups.. Have a Little Faith in Me album is favorite of mine.. playing Aaron Copland piece with his jazz ensemble was so nice idea and great work.. last summer I played this album to two close friends they are stuying music too when we go to beach, they really love it..Bill's playing is so pure and filled with love.he surely tried and trying a lot of things.. great musician. can't forget about trio with Paul Motian and Joe Lovano too..so many great things he done I really want to see him in Korea.. I really wish he could come.. I heard he came Korea 2003..and this video is so great!! story about Bill's guitar was so amazing! I haven't thought of John and Bill playing together. for me this video is like a evidence of music, jazz is one thing. even I don't group and categorize music but this 'meeting'(would be better expression) was unimaginable for me. but this video proved performance of two of great musicians with their music, with their guitars is nice..seems like they can to go further. it's interesting that talking style and soloing of Bill's are somewhat similar. great video made me happy thanks for fretboard journal!
