The MXR M-103 Blue Box Fuzz pedal shovels out enough low frequencies to scare a blue whale. It takes your guitar signal, fuzzes it up, then duplicates it two octaves down. You control the output and the mix between the fuzz signal and the octave down effect. Use it to produce synth like bass lines, fuzz heavy guitar or any combination for massive wall of sound. The Blue Box is known for having a chaotic personality that can make each session a totally unique experience!
MXR M-103 Blue Box Controls:
* Footswitch toggles effect on/bypass (red LED indicates on)
* Output knob sets total output gain
* Blend knob adjusts ratio of Octave down with fuzz signal
Power:
Single 9 volt battery or Dunlop ECB-002 AC adapter - Hudba
Love it, have it. One disadvantage - it sounds much quieter than clean signal, even if you put the output knob all the way up.
You should have some dist or overdrive after it to make it sound great.
Sorry if I've made some mistakes, I'm from Russia...
I love the 8-bit effect!
seems perfect for some kind of 8bit rock.
sly and the family stone!sweeeeeeet
and white stripes, obviously.jack white is such a huge fan of this cool little box
I love mine, easy for 8-bit covers while the rest is tuning up and turning the right knob suddenly turns it into this amazing fuzz pedal!!
its one of those things that isnt used constantly, but is definitely awesome when its used in the right situations
Super cool.... for people who think outside the box.. for a price much cheaper than a Moog..
they have years of experience with pedals - in my opinion they are hands down the best.
I have a reissued DynaComp, its one of my favorite pedals to use live.
And lets not forget the Distortion +, and the legend that is the phase 90 XD
Its a good showcase. Its how he plays the song on stage, most people tend to play it in standard.
yeah i was waiting for this one.
sweet sound
The distortion alone on this pedal sounds cool.
first riff is Porno for Pyros! Tahitian Moon
Andy your taste is always on point, sir!
I have waited to hear this pedal for so long.
i like mxr pedals
simple and seem to be really good
@mynmyself - Anything with an octave component should come first in the chain. Otherwise your tracking is likely to be erratic. We generally like boost after fuzz, at the end of the chain, but whatever works. Experimentation is good.
FOOL IN THE RAIN!!!!!!!!!
Its about time you did a demo for this pedal. Volume drop or not it's such a unique and useful effect.
i have an old version of this pedal with huge knobs and cursive writing : Dits awsome
They should just call this the, "Jack White button"
Love this pedal
thanks so much! i was discussing with my friend we had ideas along the lines of classic fuzz, extreme compression and things that would cost ££££ of pounds :) thanks again :)
Nice collective soul riff in there!
Wow, Tahitian Moon, great one
Every now and again I think of selling my Blue Box. Then I hear it or watch videos like this and decide against it.
this is was jimmy page used for fool in the rain
This is so much worth the price!!!!
Sounds like this pedal would be great for playing Neil Young's hey hey my my
' If You Want Me To Stay' by Sly and The Family Stone
Wow, awesome. I have to try one.
It's been around for decades, but I see what you mean about its selective usability. I like it a lot on "Fool in the Rain" though.
i started using this nasty box on guitar... for me is just WAY too much... although i am now using it on my wurlitzer, on my viscount organ and sometimes on some synths... it can make the wurlitzer sound AMAZING!
is nice to have this laying around on the studio as an extra tool, sometimes is cool to through a strange glitchy organ solo... the fuzz without octave sound is a pretty cool sounding option as well
Nice!
I got one of these a few years ago and don't really use it these days but maybe i'll jam with it later.
JB
thats one bad ass pedal!!!
Ive been trying to get a good fuzzy octave sound for a while. My finances arent great but i bought a big muff and a boss oc3. They do the job but theres a lot of unwanted noise. This sounds a whole lot smoother.
very good sound !....
this thing is sweet
@fruhotchiliman The octave is monophonic, you can try chords but it will sound glitchy. With the blend fully clockwise, you can play chords and get a fuzz sound.
PGS
I can get these tones with my Boss OC-2 and current stable of fuzzies/distortions, but I checked the price on this unit...BARGAIN. And the fuzz sounds awesome. I have a 78 MXR stereo chorus, it's amazing. It the quality of the newer product is anywhere near that standard I'd say it's a no-brainer. And great job, once again Andy. I truly enjoy watching these videos
PGS does. Way better than anything on television.
Superfuzz uses a kind of clipping that generates an upper octave sort of by accident. This just uses discrete components to intentionally duplicate your note 2 octaves down. It sounds weird and glitchy because it's analog and therefore kind of inherently unstable.
Sonic Youth!!!!!!
I know your comment is a year old, but it's the bassline from If You Want Me to Stay by Sly & the Family Stone but it was also covered by RHCP.
7 nation army sounds like crazy badass with this thing
7 Nation Army!!!!
fool in the rain...
thanks for responding, i actually own a dyna comp, and was wondering if it worked out like that
Hell yeah!! Try Citizen Erased!
just found my new pedal :D
Is that Smashing Pumpkins at the ending? ;D
I only bought this pedal so I could annoy the shit out of my bandmates by repeatedly playing the Super Mario Theme between songs.
This on bass through an SVT.... melt your house down
This pedal is perfect for playing Mario Theme! =D
its useful only if you're willing to experiment with, try some really crazy stuff. its too over the top to be used as a normal octave or fuzz it kind of has a mind of its own too. my friend dubbed it the atari box because everything i played through it sounded like something from old atari games
rofl the first attempt at "seven nation army" was freakin hilarious
Indeed!
@ProGuitarShopDemos thanks mates! i supposed that.... i do prefer my boost before my fuzz it makes things nastier although i havent had time for experimenting as i should (i recently baught the blue box and the booster)... i also use a 105q bass wah pedal and a ibanez wh10 v2 and a line6 dl4, experimenting is sure good... thanks for the rapid answer!
@Ombrenuit There is no way it can hurt your amp! The only 2 things you can hurt with this pedal are 1.- the speakers of your amp at great volumes and 2.- your ears with such a low bottom end it achieves. ATT. Fer
I'm getting a Blue Orchid thing from it.
I think the interest of this pedal is the "random" factor, more a kinf of noise-rock pedal than a blues-rock one I guess.
Jimmy Page used this pedal on Fool In The Rain
@JMMQOTSA That's simple, analog octave pedals are monophonic, so no chords. If you want flawless tracking and poly, digital is the way. Try a POG or a harmonizer pedal
@Xehanort86 THATS WHAT I WAS THINKING!!!! just couldnt remember the damm song! thanks
Video game noises FTW!!
@alexisramirez79 Turn the output knob up, the output is the volume of the pedal, the lower the output dial, the quieter the signal coming out of it will be. :)
You have much more control using a separate octave pedal (Boss Octave or DOD Octoplus come to mind), and distortion pedal. I use a DOD Octoplus > vintage MXR Distortion +, which gives me 5 knobs to tweak intstead of 2, and provides a much wider range of tones.
me too dude JAJAJ!! awesome \m/
Nintendocore!
This pedal is awesome! Is there a comparable pedal to this one? Something maybe a step above the blue box? Thanks
If you want me to stay! and Seven Nation Army! Cool. I really like this pedal. When i tried it out it sounded better than the Micro Pog (its just an opinion).
THIS IS AN AMAZING PEDAL, NOW IS THERE A WAY TO CONTROL THE QUANTITY OF FUZZ ON THE SIGNAL?!
If you want me to stay??? ANDY YOU ROCK BRO
is there any song you cant play?
1:25 to a lesser extent sounded like the "Demon Cleaner" riff by Kyuss, but in a different key
Atari sound! Enduro!! awesome!
Got one in the post. Imagine this with an Korg MS10...ouch!
i really like the fuzz on this pedal, i porblably wouldnt use the octave much, but does this really have a bad volume drop that i've been hearing alot about?
seven nation army
was this used in jimmy page's fool in the rain solo? also, anywhere i can get it cheap second hand online somewhere?
peace
ray
me too, it sounds fluent only when i increase the output and blend to the max... on other levels it cant pick up the sound every time i pluck the strings...
@ProGuitarShopDemos Sly and the Familly Stone ! if you want me to stay ! Andy !! You're the man... I stay on your channel Yeah yeah !!
Bass lines on higher strings? Sounds like I'm playing Nintendo...
Someone please comment. does anyone else think that this pedal (with some compression and wah) could be used to replicate the lead guitar tone in SWLABR?
if anyone knows how to get that effect please tell me. thanks so much :)
I was thinking the same, it soudns very similar.
@ProGuitarShopDemos
Hey, what about Boss OC-3 Super Octave pedal? I own one and if you set it on "Poly" mode you can play chords just fine on guitar or bass.
It's a digital pedal I know, but a great one!
@AdamSewell
Do you mean at 1:59? It is "If You Want Me To Stay" by Sly and the Family Stone.
much cooler than the EHX multiplexer.
@TehSxeNerd When the pedals plugged in and not on, your guitar signal will still get to your amp
Hmm... I could have some fun with this. It's weird, but in a good way!
kind of reminds me with the white stripes
oh... now i need a demo of the fender blender... will that ever exist Proguys?
when u have turned the blend knob completely to the left can u play chords then`?
This seems more like a novelty, or maybe for really really alternative rock bands...
Black Keys?
@redsox1024 If you want to simulate synth noises or just get weird tones get this. If you just want a fuzz pedal I suggest investing in an NYC Big Muff (the Tone Wicker's alright, but the original Big Muff cannot be touched tone-wise).
sounds like a video game
The Atari 2600 pedal
i need this for mk ultra :-D
1:56 sounds like SharpMZ800 sound synth.
Did I hear the Arrested Development theme in there somewhere?
it was seven nation army by white stripes
i just baught this pedal, sounds crazy... sure needs a bit of tweeking in order to find a nice spot... i am having problremas with my chain... i use this one, a fender blender, an LPB1, a mastotron and a graphic fuzz... mastotron and graphic fuzz are main dirt boxxes... but i dont really know where i should place the blender and the blue box... before or after the two other fuzzes?... the boost is always first in the chain in order to get more gain instead of more volume...
I just got one of those, and it sounds crazy, but if I don't put the output knob all the way up, there is a noticeable drop in volume when I switch it on. Is this an issue of this thing or mine is defective?
