It just goes to show that you don't need graphic "blood and guts" to scare the crap out of your audience. Many of the old black and white TV show and classic horror movies are far more terrifying than anything they come up with today! has anyone ever seen the cult classic horror movie "Carnival of Souls "? Perfect example

Wow, I don't remember this episode from 1959. This is so eerie in retrospect, this was aired before Kennedy was shot. John mentions how these were the saddest hours in American history. He could never have known that soon another terrible event would cause even more heartbreak and sadness. Thanks for posting this.

I believe that many people in power have been given a choice that would require to either continue a steadfast Christian commitment to truth but concomitant death or give in to the forces of evil! JFK knowing the outcome of his trip to Dallas still chose truth and love of America!

I lot of people felt that strange feeling. Weird thing like this happened to my dad and I. About a month ago I was in my room and out of no where I got this awful feeling that came over me. A feeling of dread it scared me, I felt as though something was coming that would change everything. I went to the kitchen to tell my dad, he said I look pale and touched my hands that were ice cold. I told him about the bad feeling I had. He then confessed that in the morning he felt the same. Then he told me to go to my room and pray because the world was about to change.. our feeling came true when this whole Coronavirus happened and yes the world changed.
I think President Lincoln felt that he was going to die just didn't know why and those people that felt it, felt that the country was about to change.

I always liked the eeriness of this show because it was based on supposedly actual events that occurred. I experienced an eery "OSB" happening myself one day -- Sept. 28, 1978 to be precise. I turned on the TV while I was doing chores around my small apartment when I heard the usual "we interrupt this program for a special report (or announcement)" and before I even went to look or hear the report I said out loud "the pope is dead" (Pope John Paul I). I just felt I knew that would be the announcement. I'd never heard or read he was a frail man or suspected he might be ill but I just "knew" he would be dead. I've always felt that was strange.

Very, very good facts. Except, in the dream President Lincoln had, he walked down stairs, where a soldier was standing guard in the East Room. When Lincoln asked who was dead in the White House, the soldier replied "The President; he was assassinated tonight." The dinner party happened on 4 April 1865. It is true that Lincoln said to the doorkeeper at the WH, "Good-bye not his usual 'Good-night'. Also true was the ringing of the church bells. Lincoln died in the Petersen House on 15 April 1865 at 0722. Why was that room empty at such a fortuitous time? Because the previous tenant kept hearing 'sobbing & crying'. From a lover of history........

@@getvnews1918 Interesting comments. I have read many of these regarding this episode. I had rare feelings when watching different things having to do with his assassination. Last year my wife and I toured sites in Washington D.C. The place I looked forward to most was Ford Theater. A gentleman guided us through with many details. It was exceptional. As with Lincoln, the thoughts of JFK often surface too. I was 12 and in the 7th grade when JFK was assassinated. Like so many that lived through this my recall of that day is easily brought to mind. The mention of Star Trek has also caught my attention. I have seen these episodes and enjoyed them. Another Star Trek tie in with One Step Beyond: the Star Trek episode originally aired March 23rd 1967 was titled "Errand of Mercy" and it was directed by John Newland. It is one of my favorites from the original series. It has John Newland all over the program.

The whitehouse had no secret service so they hired Pinkerton detective agency to give protection. They forbid him to go out riding after this incident or they would quit the job.

I remember the show Unsolved Mysteries once investigated Lincoln's murder and to my surprise the assassin got away and lived to be an old man, then confessed on his death bed. Hi. "Midnight" is not an episode of "One Step Beyond" even though it is mysteriously listed as such in episode guides and even though it is included in some public domain DVD sets. If you notice, John Newland is nowhere to be found during the episode and he does not direct it. "Midnight" is an episode of an old and very obscure 1950-51 TV series called "Stars over Hollywood". Why it is thought of as an episode of One Step Beyond, I do not know.

Would love to see Hollywood recreate ''One Step Beyond'' But in order for the series to work it would have to have the following qualities:
1.John Newland as the host...John taped several different intros, so that shouldn't be a problem.
2.The same original music sound track.
3.The same black and white film format, to retain the eerie atmosphere of the show.
I believe the show would be a big hit. Are you listening Hollywood?

Black and White wouldn't work. There's simply too many people who wouldn't watch. Sad, but absolutely true. Leaving John Newland as the host would only be a gimmick. There's hosts out there who could, and should, take his place. Leaving the eerie music is a must. It adds much to the atmosphere of the show. The opening episode could be about the first responders who thought they heard the terrified mother pleading for help from the overturned car in that Utah river just a couple of years ago. Fact is, there's plenty of current paranormal stories they could cover, in addition to redoing some of these original scripts. Those are my thoughts regarding your idea.

'Moved 17 times...The remains of his son, William Wallace Lincoln, were also placed on the train. Mary Todd Lincoln and three of his four sons are also buried there. (Robert Todd Lincoln is buried in Arlington National Cemetery at Arlington, Virginia). Because of the length of the funeral, historians have called this event "The Greatest Funeral in the History of the United States".

I have seen several documentaries on Lincoln that have all mentioned that dream he had, only in theirs he entered the room of people looking at the casket, and he asked, who had died, in the White House, and a man said, the president. Whichever way it was I do believe he had gotten a premonition dream. This is first I heard about the bell ringing by itself, and others having premonitions, but it's not to say that couldn't have happened. Some folks just don't realize what a powerful man of courage Lincoln was, and what a good heart he had, and that's what God looks at, your heart, and what you have, in it. God would give a forewarning to His child. And if he's killed God leaves a mark, to let you know He was there, and did not like it. Like John Wilkes Booth being shot, and died at the exact time that Lincoln had died, 7:22. That was no coincidence, that was God. Even Jesus when he died, on the cross, the curtain in the temple split open, showing that God in heaven did not like that, and Jesus arose the 3rd day. And when MLK, was killed, for the first time in all my living, in Memphis, it snowed for the first time in April. There was 4ft. of snow there, on April 4, 1968, and I saw that as God's hand.

Lincoln had many dreams about the future. One that he told was that, in a dream, he found himself in front of a mirror, but there two images of himself instead of one! One was normal, but the second was a strange shadow image. He said he interpreted this to mean that he would serve 2 terms in the White House, but he would not finish the second!!!

It was sad for sure but hardly the saddest in American history. Although, I am rather thinking of 9-11 and Kennedy (both the brothers) not to mention Dr. MLK Jr. But what about, say, Pearl Harbor? That came before this was made. The Depression? That was real sad. Anyway. Excellent. Incidentally I'm the 300th commenter :)
