    Thankfully Leafs overpaid Nylander based on 30 or so games.
    The good news is with the Leaf model they will always have spots on their roster for min wage and even AHL players. The Toronto Maple Leafs can also ensure players who should probably retire always have an option to keep going.

      D is old and wobbly: Gio and Brodie just don't have it anymore and the team that didn't re-sign them originally -- Calgary -- seemed to have known this at the time. I think the Leafs thought their window for winning was 2021-2023, maybe 2024 this year at the latest, and these guys are therefore past their best before dates. Given how young Marner, Nylander, and Matthews were at the time, I think management jumped the gun. The Tavares signing appears to have been the one clear mistake regarding the core -- the rest are terrific and most teams would be thrilled to have any of the big 3. All this discussion of "softness" is misplaced: the issue is the depth and the team cohesion.

      Brodie was one of the weaker D in Calgary in his last year and a half there, and that was 3 or 4 years back. He was also seen as being on a bit of a decline. That's why Calgary could part with him. As a general rule, picking up lower tier D that another team can part with is a bad idea. The exception is the very defensive types who never put up a lot of points anyway, but had good decision-making abilities while defending. (Tanev, Cole, etc.) Brodie wasn't that kind of D.

Leafs are not one of them. Arizona and Columbus look promising to me, I'm sure there are other teams as well that would consider this kind of trade. Throw in Tavares for free, or even absorb some of the salary. Something has to change. The question is whether to do this now or in the Summer.

    Which teams since the lockout didn't draft their way to the Cup? Leafs just didn't hit on any elite D or G draft picks or get a Scott Niedermayer or Zdeno Chara in free agency (Do you want an Orlov at $7.75M?). They managed to trade for Muzzin but he got a career-ending injury. It's so hard to get D that they kept Justin Holl in the expansion draft. Morgan Reilly is great but compare him to the D other Cup winners had - he can't do it alone.

    • @gameburn178
      @gameburn178 Před 6 měsíci +1

      Drafting D is difficult: obviously mobility and brains are critical and size is a bonus. But you have to draft them and hope. The Leafs needed to trade Nylander at some point this year or this last summer for a young D together with a top pairing D, not impossible, as every team needs scoring. This also would have freed up money. Not too late though, and Nylander is under contract which makes him more attractive. Marner and Matthews you keep, not least because they play well together (similar to McD and Drai; Pettersson and Miller.) Tavares is probably untradeable.

    I think the biggest issue is the Shanna-plan that uses too much cap on offense and minimal on defence and goaltenders. Keefe needs to go asap, from day one he has never made these players accountable, he just keeps defending them year after year. They players have no heart and are never willing to go outside their comfort zone to win. They want big paydays but don't want to earn them. Up until this past 2 months I have believed and defended this plan and players, believing that if we just tweak the dcore and goalie position, we can get over the hump, I no longer believe that is possible with this group of heartless, gutless core. I know it is not possible to trade any of the core but until Marner, Nylander and JT are gone we are going to have to live with being a good regular season team, nothing more. I will continue to cheer them on in hope that a miracle can happen, will not stress when we are golfing in April.

They have over 11 million in deadline cap to work with, along with 9 pick in the first 3 round in the next 3 years and 2-3 times more high quality prospects than anyone in the division aiming for the playoffs. Leafs have 34k in deadline cap space until they start sending down players to gain Klingberg cap relief back.

Lindros used to bury guys in to the boards, and Mathews could easily do the same, BUT there’s one simple reason why he doesn’t and that’s because Lindros played in the CHL and Mathews played in the No Hit Euro League. Their roster is far too top-heavy. Over half of their salary-cap is spent on 4 players that have never won anything. It is one thing to pay players premiums after they have led your team somewhere, but the 4 players on Toronto have 1 playoff series win out of 8 total series played. That is only winning 12.5% of the time. Nylander or Marner should have been traded last offseason to acquire depth and defense. Right now they have no depth or defense or goaltending. The respective per-season cap hits are US$10.903 and US$11 million, with, should such buyouts occur this coming offseason, such hits of, for the:

What happened to Kampf’s play? Get him back to where he was asap. Sign Perry. Develop Knies. Develop Timmins. Wait for Murray to see if he’s changed after that surgery. Develop Woll. Keep Jones. Samsonov I like but it’s business here. We can get more & he’ll perform better elsewhere. We need fresh blood to show that choking is not an option. There’s way too high of a ratio of choking. If it’s mental, get some professionals to talk through it. The curse is supposed to be lifted. 😅

    I just watched that failed poke check goal from Sprong? and o_dog is right about the lack of effort from TJ Brodie. The guy didn't have any hustle knowing your pairing half broke his stick and the play is back to your zone, he should have bolted back. He looked like a fat kid with poor cardio doing P.E class. I have seen people bitch about the D but I never realized how right they were until O-Dog pointed it out a specific incident here. They are just giving up too early and often. I can't imagine what Keefe is thinking seeing this as his players aren't playing for him.
    I have to think there are much more eager players in the A that are willing to break their backs for a chance so why not give them a shot? It can't be any worse than this pathetic effort by the regulars. No way!

    It is absolutely a coaching issue. The definition of stupidity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.

    Is it possible that the rest of the team, are tired of the 10 million dollar plus players. And have left the favored five fend for themselves ?
