- Here in this video, I take the Gopro hero 3+ completely apart. This is a Hero 3+ Silver edition, but will be the same for any 3+. The main reason for this guide is to demonstrate how to replace the lens and lens body if you scratched or damaged the lens and need to replace it. I also demonstrate how to remove and replace the case glass protector as well.
I apologize for the poor sound quality of my voice. I was using my gaming headset and I will purchase a high quality desk microphone in the near future.
If there was anything I missed or anything you would like clarified, please comment or message me and I will do the best I can. I will make more videos like this on many other devices.
This is where I found the replacement lens. The threads are longer than stock so you must replace the lens body as well.

Many thanks for this great teardown. It gave me the confidence to strip my H3+ and replace a faulty/water damaged SD board (No SD error). Using a new SD board from China for £15UKP I resurrected this H3+ that I bought as a spares and repairs for £100UKP from Ebay and its now working for the first time. Worth noting I bought some quality 00 screwdrivers to do the work - Wera brand - highly recommended. Thanks again!

my gopro 3+ silver edition is another issue. it will turn on but freez immediately. i repeat many times but still freeze. i followed the instruction to hard reset but still freeze on startup. i put the sdcard which is contain firmware upgrade but still freeze on startup. plus it getting hot and hot

Thoughts on making a naked 3+ for FPV drones? I believe it can run on 5v thru the 30 pin connector.
A word of warning about the flex cable in the end - just broke mine after disassembling 3 times due to residual corrosion cleaning and bad connected "micro-connectors". Will have to buy a replacement flex cable (record button) somehow most probably. Other than this, the camera is like new after so many years without maintenance.

Enrique Higueras Sadly that part is quite pricey... About $90USD from ragecams.com and around 50-90 on Ebay from what I've found. I'm sorry that you've damaged that part.

Is the camera sensitive to loud voices..lol. Totally joking, great video, I know it's old, but I acquired the exact camera with a used drone purchase not long ago, had a scratched lens I replaced already, thinking of using it to make a naked gopro for my lighter models. Did you notice much of a weight difference when you got the body off of it? If I can drop 15-25grams it'll be worth it, otherwise I won't bother.
FYI... You can get lenses that just screw in without taking the whole gopro apart, that's how I replaced mine, at least with the Hero 5 and back from videos I've seen. You have to carefully take that outer lens protector off and use wide set of tweezers or prongs, to break the rubber-ish glue seal, but then it screws right out, and you use some blue lock-tight when you screw the new one in, and you'll have to hook it via hdmi to PC/TV to focus it. Link at the bottom to the one I got. What's great is they have a lot of FOV and lens size choices if you don't like the stock Hero 3+ lens.
Just remember the thread size is common, but they make others, you're looking for M12 or !2*0.5, that's how it's listed. Also if you read reviews, lotta people make a big deal out of the lens having, or missing, the IR filter. If the camera and lens don't have one, it'll give you a funky pinkish picture. If one or the other, or both have them, you'll be fine. The hero 3+ has one on the sensor so either way you're fine. You can see this IR filter at 7:17, it's like the redish-yellow glare on a pair of sunglasses, at 8:49 you can see thru the new lens your installing straight down to the blue mouse pad, no filter. You probably know all this, but threw it in for anybody trying to figure out how to replace an old camera's lens. Take care, Cheers!

I have a GoPro Hero3 Silver camera. My remote microphone does not work but the camera microphone does. Any thoughts?
What microphone are you using? Does it work in Other gopros and just not yours? Is the microphone designed specifically for it and others who use that specific microphone had any issues or solutions?

I have a MOVO GM100 Lavalier and adapter cord. They claim GoPro Hero3, Hero3+ Hero2 compatibility. After watching some videos I also bought a different mic. from Amazon that says it is compatible with GoPro. Two mic's one adapter and no sound from either. I ordered another adapter just for grins but it hasn't arrived yet. Unfortunately I am the only one in my area doing this so I can't try this on another GoPro camera. I DO have a cheap knock off GoPro but it takes a micro USB adapter. So I ordered an adapter for it to test my mic's but have yet to receive it. The official GoPro hot line says external microphones are not compatible with my GoPro Hero3 Silver yet I see CZcams videos with this model using remote microphones. Also, my USB port works for charging the battery......Thoughts?
I just got my other adapter and BOTH microphones work now! So apparently my MOVO USB - microphone adapter was the problem. I am going to try it out on my motorcycle now to eliminate wind noise.

+jay spetch Hey! Yes the LCD screen is replacable, it is a bit pricy at around 60 dollars on ebay. I would just search around ebay for the part and see if you can find a good deal there. It seems to be a simple ribbon plug so it should be an easy fix! I hope this helps you, sorry I took a while to get back to you.

So I fell on my bike and now the camera won't turn on or even charge I tired hard reset it and it didn't work
But it was working after that it was when I turned it off
Just a quick question:
The serial number on the back of the motherboard is its own serial number? Or it's the serial number of the cam itself ? (And the motherboard haven't got no own serial number.) In that case it should match the serial number in the battery compartment. Am I right ?

you have 2 mics one on top and one on left side from front so both 2 are in plastic black case... hope I help

Foti H Foti H well there's a setting for auto off you can change. But for turning on, check the battery and charging cables first. If it's still not working the power switch may be defective. Fixing it yourself is easy, you just buy a replacement housing and swap it out.

one of my friend make update for first time and fromt that time doesnt work sometimes doesnt turn on and sometimes turn on than turn of by it self like have issues...before update was working perfect after update doesnt work..sd card is 64g
Foti H I would try a different SD card. Make sure it's a class 10 of a reputable brand. These require very fast so cards. Size doesn't dictate speed

The problem is with whisper itself. When we whisper, a lot of sounds, those sharper ones- get omitted and that pretty much breaks the deal for non-native English speakers. But anyway, you are great!

the 3+ black edition is that much different from the silver edition? just scratched my lens(3+ black) this weekend and got VERY UPSET about it. i'm hoping the new lens is a 'screw in' lens and i'll be able to change it much easier with out really have to take it all apart.

Kevin Chin the reason I took it apart was because the replacement lens I received had a different length thread than original and for the proper focus I needed to replace the lens housing as well. The hero 3+ black should be very similar to this. I've never taken apart a her 3+ black, but I doubt they would be different enough to the point of making the replacement process vary. The lens I used was listed for both the hero 3+ silver and black.
I'm sorry if my video was confusing and making you believe you must take apart the whole entire camera to replace the lens. I was just unlucky and got a lens that required me to.
