GoPro Hero 3 Freeze Up Fix

  • The GoPro camera for many has had a spotty product launch. These things are prone to freezing up, and way too much time is spent pulling the battery out and replacing it to get it to work again. Mine had that problem, but I fixed it. For now, anyway.
It seems amazing that the GoPro has so many problems. Cameras on iPhone or Android cellphones come out of the box working great. Why can't these things do the same?

Find software than can format any size of storage into FAT32, like Acronis Disk Director. Format the SD into FAT32, then reinstall. The reason they don't work out of the box is because most of the time they come in exFAT format, and the camera doesn't understand it. If it's 32GB or less, it should come in FAT32, but sometimes they don't. Windows will only allow you to format into FAT32 only if the size is 32GB or less, which is why you need additional software. Mine was freezing up while recording, or the recording time was running really slow, like 15 to 20 seconds for each second recorded. Once I formatted my 128GB into FAT32, the issue went away.

That works sometimes, but not always. I still have to pull the battery out when it locks up, etc, which is far to often. This product was clearly not ready for market, but they put it out there anyway.

I have tried: U3 V30 SD cards, Double battery packs, the foil under the battery, formatting the card, turning off all the extra modes. You know what works. Keeping the outside temperature below 40 deg F. Above 40F it bricks up. You know what is never below 40F? SoCal weather is never below 40F. A Samsung W200 never bricks.

My Hero+ froze - and yes, it was when card was full.. Just took out card, then switched on. Put card back in and everything worked - first thing I did was delete a couple of old vids and now can record - card not fried but seems responsible for the lock up

probably a counterfeit card. I have bought several things on eBay that were counterfeit. They came in what looked like original factory packages from those famous makers. LG brand refrigerator water filters, elixir, guitar strings, Flea and tick collars for my dog, NGK spark plugs. These were all counterfit knock offs that I got on eBay.
I have no doubt that there are counterfeit SD cards out there..

hey so if you want to recover your data on the sd card, just push the sd card in enough to where its in the slot, but it doesn't click in, while you are connected to your computer, its a little difficult to keep it in but once the sd card is in place it should work

GOPRO HERO 3+ BLACK - Same problem but on the actual home screen (not the loading screen). No button functionality so take out battery to turn off. The only thing it can do is tell me if the SD card is in or out. Other than that it dosen't matter if it is out it still doesn't work. I've tried different cards and batteries but they aren't the problem. Can't upgrade software because I can't access the settings in camera so I'm stuck with a £350 camera that stopped working after a surprising 1.5 years.

I've had my GoPro 3 Silver for about a week now. When I first got it I charged it up but then the battery died within 10 minutes of me turning it on. That was frustrating so I charged it up again and it's been working great ever since. Got some cool footage out of it so far! The only complaint I have is the wifi signal connecting to the app SUCKS. Half the time it doesn't connect and it's frustrating because I want to see how the shot looks before I start filming it.

  • @HolyGrailOfGolf
    @HolyGrailOfGolf Před 3 lety

I believe it's a battery problem. The battery doesn't give enough power to start the camera properly.
The fix: remove the battery and plug in the power cord and boot it up.
Start recording and install the battery while it's running.
The camera should work properly as long as you don't turn it off.

Mine would freeze and not restart after 30 secs up to about 3 minutes depending on temperature at startup. If a little warm then freeze-up occurred sooner and sooner. In this state it would not begin battery charge either. After firmware download from gopro and upload into Hero 3 it works perfectly, no more shutdowns and camera starts up every time. I did not expect it to work but what a surprise when it did.

Yes it would be better if you didn't get the feeling of rolling a dice each time for whether it works or not. I got a new camera today and it seems to be working well with the same Sandisk E+ card. I did a firmware update right away before testing the camera so maybe that helped or I'm just lucky this time. Anyways, so far so good.

Here's my educated guess for this FREEZING issue (HERO 3). At least as far as I have experienced. I believe it is an OVERHEATING issue. All the fixes I have seen on video have a seemingly less than predictable result (at first). My feeling each "solution" eventually works. Why? I think it's because there is enough TIME for the battery (and camera?) to cool down. Think about it. All the initial tries that fail suddenly work.
What I did was take the battery out of the GoPro and put the battery in the freezer for a few mins. , like 5 mins. I take it out of the fridge. The battery is cool to the touch (below room temperature). Put it in the Hero 3. TaaaDaa Instantly works. An argument could be made that the camera was also cooling down. That may be. But the battery is cheaper than the camera so I choose to FREEZE the battery rather than the GoPro.
So to UNFREEZE the GoPro, FREEZE the battery (actually cool it down not freeze).

The camera has been mounted on my DJI Phantom 2's gimbal since 2014 without issues until two days ago. I followed your advise and not only got a new Micro SD card but a new battery as well. I think last time I had recorded the time-lapse and the card was full after few hours. Maybe it's also that your previous card is full so can't turn it on.... It's just my guess.... It is so much problem for this camera that I agree. BTW I have 3 plus version, should be fairly similar.

    • @JoeandNicsRoadTrip
      @JoeandNicsRoadTrip  Před 10 lety +1

I can't get it to work at all. What's worse, the card you saw me replace it with in the video has fried as well, after about a month. So I replaced it with a cheaper 16gb SanDisk Ultra Plus, bought from Walmart for $17, and it has worked the longest. It's still working now. I would go that route - it's still rated a 10, and has worked longer than the other, bigger more expensive cards.

GoPro was an expensive mistake for me. 1.5 years after I bought GoPro 3 White Edition I got the freeze problem. Sometimes it takes 10 minutes until freeze, sometimes it doesnt even start. I didnt used it very often and I didnt used it under "extreme" conditions.
I bought SanDisk Ultra 64 GB UHS-I Class 10 (48MB/s) and SanDisk Extreme 64 GB USH-I Class 10 U3 (60MB/s) SD cards because I lost my old no name SD card before (which worked fine for 1 year). In the beginning the cam still worked well but suddenly the gopro freezed and crashed over and over again. Tried to hard reset the cam but nothing happend, firmware update caused even more problems, tried other battery packs (from gopro, w!ckedchili, baxxtar) whitout success. Tried to format the sd cards via PC and via cam, tried another no name SD card - nothing worked. The tips from the gopro website are useles
I will not spend more money for this piece of shit (especially because I used a SD card which is RECOMMENDED BY GOPRO). Gopro cam is just expensive, the equipment is also totally overpriced and this shitty cam just cause problems, Gopro app has a ridiculous delay and if it is a little bit dark you can forget to record something.
DO NOT BUY "GOPRO" CAUSE IT IS LIKE BURNING YOUR MONEY FOR NOTHING

POWERFUL TIPS on GoPro Freezing ..
    1. DO NOT TRANSFER FILES DIRECT FROM GOPRO TO PC, REMOVED MICRO SD CARD AND USED MEMORY CARD READER INSTEAD
    2. PLEASE. DO NOT SWITCH ON YOUR GOPRO WHILE CHARGING..( YOU CAN JUST TURN ON YOUR GOPRO IF YOU ARE UPDATING THE LATEST FIRMWARE )
    3. IF IT FREEZES DO NOT ALWAYS DO THE HARD RESET BY REMOVING YOUR BATTERY AND INSERT IT AGAIN OVER AND OVER AGAIN, BECAUSE THE CONTACT CONNECTION ON GOPRO AND BATTERY WILL DAMAGED..
    4. FREEZING GOPRO? YOU SHOULD HAVE TO USED BATTERY POWER BANK (DO NOT CHARGE TO WALL/PC)
when connected to Power bank just unplugged/plugged until it turns on.

If you have two micro sims there is an easy way to fix this.
    SAVE ALL GOPRO CONTENT FIRST!!!!!!!!!
    1. take your other micro sd card that works and exchanged it with the other one that isn't working.
    (make sure it's off first)
2.now you will see your gopro working when you turn it back on.
    3. turn it off then put back the bad one back in and go erase everything
    (save before you do that)
    4. Now your sd card will not be as slow as you could say, keeping up with your gopro
    5. please find a new sd card (drop some money)
If all fails please contact Gopro support or try updating it.

preaching to the choir here but gopro are scammed. H4B - freezes all the time and they tell you to buy SD to "fix it". used the fully updated cam without an SD and froze every time. the worst part is the fake charm from customer support...

they just want to buy SD cards under the false assumption it will fix your problem.

If you take the card that doesn't work and reformat it might fix it. The card has become corrupt..

The card I used in this video fried after about a month, so I'm on yet another new card. I guess that's going to be what I have to deal with (sounds like what you'll have to deal with as well) regularly - having to replace the card every month or so.

NEVER buy a GoPro - pile of s***te. Mine (3+) gave up the ghost after 3 or 4 uses. GoPro customer service worse than useless, offered me 10% off another one! As if I'd ever buy such rubbish again.

Gopro cameras are crap. They will fail eventually. Mine is locked now an I have tried everything. I would never ever buy one again over $300 wasted. I am going to take a hammer and smash mine into little pieces and make a video on me smashing it. I am then going to send the little pieces in an envelope back to gopro. Don't ever buy a gopro.
