How to hack a GoPro Hero3 for wired remote control

This video shows how to bypass the control buttons on the GoPro Hero 3 Black Edition. While the H3 has wifi built-in to allow remote control, there are several cases where a wired remote is superior. These cases are when the camera is to be externally powered and in a location that is not easily accessible (mounted on a building, vehicle, etc). In these cases, you can't get at the camera to turn on the wifi, in order to control it remotely.
Doing it this way give you full control over the camera's features, just as if you were pressing the buttons on the camera itself.

Why didn't you trace the board to find points instead of soldering to the switches, maybe a better idea to use thinner wires next time.

I just tried the mod on the latest generation Hero-3 Black. The location where the record and wifi buttons were once wired are now replaced by a micro ribbon cable. Only way to solder was with a microscope. I took the unit to work, ohm'd out the contacts on the ribbon cable and asked one of the techs to solder it for me. A few micro wires later and it worked like a charm. Using this to remote control the camera is a race car.

Is the ground also accessible from the inside? For me, the shutter button is the most desired remoting function. It also seems the most accessible contact.
By the way, your method is by for the most practical. 3DRobotics use the rear port on the Solo but its still their secret, how to use it.
im thinking of buying the back adapter/ board from ebay and using a dedicated channel to start and stop recording. hopefully that helps with the dumb zenmuse H3-3D lack of start stop

Why didn't you use the 30 pin connector. There's a pin to gnd combination in the 30 pin layout to do just that. The connectors are available on ebay and the pin layout is published everywhere... :-)
Perhaps they are now, but I made this video nearly 2 years ago, when the H3 was just introduced. Those parts & documentation were not available at the time!
30 Pin connector only turns the GoPro on, and requires GoPro to be set to a mode where the camera begins filming as soon as it powers on. This is all good when triggering the shutter isn't time sensitive since the camera needs to power on before taking a shot. For mapping, though, I need the GoPro to trigger as soon as the signal is received by the GoPro from the flight controller so the captured photo is aligned with the geotagging info that's saved at the same time the signal is sent to from the flight controller.

The 30 pin connector has the power button connector on there but i can't find the shutter button required for the quick shooting mode start

Can you connect the trigger via an LED switch to the PIxhawk for remote shuttering the camera on Mission Planner Distance credentials, instead of time on the camera? I got your link from a DIY drone forum, for which I assume you are familiar with Pixhawk Flight controller for Land Mapping missions with drones...

Sadly GoPro removed the trigger from camera with a software update, my Hero 4 black has not power or trigger via the back port. Good work gopro!

I often get the question about why I'm using wires instead of the wireless remote. It's because the wifi has limited range. Many people want to use GoPro's in a remote location where wifi won't reach...going with a hard-wired connection is the only way to make that work.

Really simple. Just use optocouplers to connect wires and ground using your Arduino digital pins.

Hello! Great video. I am working on a project where I am trying to use a motion sensor to trigger the shutter of the gopro. Do you have any tips? I saw you used the ground on the USB port to trigger the button pressing, is there a way to instead send current through the wire to trigger it? Thanks!
Josh Lazar That's probably not a safe way to do it. The GoPro is triggered by current sinking, not sourcing. But as long as the ground on the GoPro and the ground on your trigger circuit are the same, it should be pretty easy to have it trigger the camera.

I'm trying to do the same with Hero 3+ black but as the board connections are a bit different , I don't know where to solder the wires for the shutter/wifi on the board . is it possible for you to upload a pic or schematic for shutter or wifi connection on the board for hero 3+ black also ? Unfortunately, I don't have a Hero 3+ to play with. Do you have a photo of the board? I've heard it's quite different, using ribbon cables to connect the switches, so it's much more difficult to solder to them.
I am looking for go pro 3/4 black shutter release that will allow me to see where I am flying and start and stop the recording after I have every thing in frame, can what you just shown do this?
What's shown in this video can certainly do what you're asking, assuming you have a way to 1) remotely connect the shutter to ground using a servo or opto-isolator, and 2) that you have a way to transmit the live video back to you while flying. But I've only tried this on the Hero 3. Folks have told me that the Hero 3+ has a different wiring scheme, and I know nothing about the wiring of the Hero 4.

Best way is to connect to the ground of the Hero3 (the outer metal housing on the USB port works as a ground). Connecting to ground on your receiver might not work because it may not be sharing the same ground as the camera.

Facethewind thanks my friend, I also saw that video but unfortunately it is impossible to do it the micro pins are just too small for me. Im good at soldering but there no way i can do that haha. There got to be another way to do this.
Facethewind ok good news i got it to work now ! the gopro 3+ soldered all by myself it was a miracle i dont know how i did it with those tiny pins,, at one point i accidentally jointed up all 3 pins with a solder lead but managed to removed it.

So, how do trigger it remotely and how do you know the camera's status (on/off, wifi on/off, shoot mode, etc.). thinking this would be a good mod on a Phantom UAV. Thanks!
The only method of verifying the camera's status is either through the wifi app, or by using the video feedback (that's the method I use). If you were using it through a UAV, I'd imagine you'd be feeding back the live video to a display on the ground, so you could just get the camera's status on that display (just need to turn on the camera's on-screen display mode in the settings menus).

I want to be able to trigger photo remotely (using a RC control and a receiver via a AUX signal). How can I do this? Is it possible?
Yeah, you should be able to do that using an opto-isolator. Your RC receiver could trigger the opto, and then the opto would trigger the camera. This isolates the camera from any electrical noise coming from the receiver...should make the button triggers more reliable.
Would this work if I were to have a wire connected to the "capture" button at the top. Would connecting it to common ground take a picture or start recording video whenever it is toggled?
Oh nevermind forgot to notice that you've already connected to the shutter. Great, next step is to have on board flight controller touch go pro's common ground so it takes pictures at described intervals when the drone is moving. Great!

Keep in mind, the Hero3 is pretty sensitive to electrical noise, so directly connecting the ground can cause double-triggers. It's always best to use opto-isolators to control the switches if you can. They're cheap and small, and you might even be able to trigger them directly with the drone's on-board receiver, depending on how yours is set up.
Sharing good ideas I can add it is also possible keeping the case (the smaller 3+) and using external microphone/composite/power with a solution similar to this GoPro Hero3 + Black - DIY external mic adapter cable to fit inside case (waterproof). See comments for problems with wifi and external mic

I doubt it. The H3+ and newer models have very different internal circuit boards. It might be possible (I haven't tried), but you'd have to locate the switches and bypass them like shown in this video.

Awesome! I wish this information had been available back when I was originally doing these mods a few years ago. I remember looking everywhere for any pinout diagrams for that connector, but it was still pretty new at that point.
Is the same for gp4?
I haven't taken a gp4 apart, but I'd imagine it's going to be different. There were significant differences between the gp2 and gp3, and even the 3 and the 3+.
Will this allow me to get full control on my drone? I have a Yuneec q500 and i can only tilt it etc gimble control and video feed but can't start stop record ? +facethewind

+manny c If you have an output on your drone that can be used to close a relay, then it could be used to trigger the camera using this hardwired method.
i feel like with this method you can keep whatever control your drone has, but then add start stop record to a dedicated channel. did you manage to figure out how to do it?
