In the late 80s I used to like walking back up wee hours of the morning after a night out in Manhattan. Up to 59th and 3rd Ave to take the bus back to Astoria. I don't know if it was any more dangerous than taking the subway Somewhere around 56th and 3rd there was a bakery that made bagels for restaurants but you could buy fresh out of the oven directly from them. No store front you just either knew about it or not. Those were the days.
@Genessender G Yeah, we all want to go back to the city that was swarmed with criminals, drug dealers, murderers, rapists, when it was impossible to walk down the street safely in the evening, let alone ride the graffiti subway. Seriously, it was so awesome to get stabbed and robbed, etc. All I see now is well dressed, successful young and not-so-young people working well-established jobs, doing their thing, not to mention a much better and updated infrastructure (though it's still nowhere near the level of Tokyo). But no, seriously, Gay Pride and Basquiat gave the world so much happiness and prosperity that I can now truly attest we live in a much better world. We're all so happy and united. If it wasn't for Mapplethorpe, new wave disco freak shows, and porn theaters, we as a Western Civilization of New York City, would've collapsed.
@Genessender G You must be some cranky 60 something year old idiot nostalgic of NYC. Just because one survived the 70's zombie apocalypse in NYC, that doesn't make the city good place to live. There's a difference between cautiousness and cowardice.
NYC lives up to the saying “ how much tyranny can a politician impose? As much as a society allows” given up freedom for security and you lose both. History repeats itself and Americans hate reading 🤦🏻♂️
Its already reaching the levels of the late 90‘s in some precincts. the main reason why crime is down is car thefts, if you take out car thefts the crime rate will look much worse.

@Morris Watkins all the wealthy businessmen and government people worked in Detroit but lived in the cities surrounding Detroit because of crazy taxes that were implemented. Then the city forced all government workers to live in the city so 10-15 workers would “rent” a house in the city. Property tax is through the roof in Detroit. The democrats ruined the city. Pretty sure every single mayor since the 80’s was removed from office and most are/were in prison.
The bit about glamorousing the violent past is a big thing where I'm from. Glasgow had a reputation as one of the most violent cities in Europe for decades. So much safer now but lots of people fawn over that shit and lots of non-Glaswegians still talk as though you are going to headbut them when you have a minor disagreement.
The crime rate in the US was rising starting in the 70's. It eventually went down in the early 90's. But NYC had a reputation that bled over into movies like: Death Wish (a vigilante taking on out-of-control crime), Escape From New York (NYC is literally turned into a prison), The Warriors (more gang members than cops). We may complain about crime today, but that's because we've had it so good for the past 30 years.
That’s so true. People don’t realise that crime today is not even bad as it was 33 years ago. It’s just that people snitch more, and things are more recorded now due to social media
The main problem with de Blasio is that he tries to be everything and doesn't satisfy anyone. He is part of the corporate democratic machine but tries to be woke to satisfy that crowd, then tries to be progressive to satisfy that other proud. If you want to dance in the gray area of Joe saying "someone" and not naming anyone, by all means, have at it. Seeing as how they were discussing if Bloomberg could be mayor again, id say reason lends to the idea that they think Bloomberg, if elected again, would be able to clean things up. Thus my initial comment. Of which, I stand by. I dont think Bloomberg could clean it up and honestly given the political climate, I dont know that anyone can. I think NYC collapses in on itself socially and economically, much like Detroit has.
Oh really? Interesting because under Bloomberg we had the lowest crime rate in NYC. He was so beloved he got a third term, the only nyc mayor in history to hold that title, Rudy couldn’t pull that off and he was mayor during 911. Your bias is quite evident, just because Fox News told you Bloomberg was bad doesent mean they know shit, I’ve lived in NYC since the 68 and believe me we have yet to have a better mayor than Bloomberg, he was a great man and made the city a paradise. Okay that’s fair, my mistake I mistook you for one of those people who groups in Bloomberg with deblasio. I only wrongly assumed your of the more automatic right wing in that most of them think things went down after Rudy. Deblasio is the one who plunged the city into a terrible place to live, hopefully he gets voted out and someone sane takes over. I’ve left nyc myself ATM lol currently in Pennsylvania till deblasio is removed.
NYC Mayor can serve two terms as mayor. Bloomberg changed that law so that he could serve a third term. Now it reverted back to two terms. I am a New York native and I can tell NY was horrible in the 1970s until 1994 when Rudy Giuliani became mayor. My cousin was murdered in 1983.
I remember Rudy Guilliani cleaning up NYC in the 90’s. He’s a little weird now supporting a con artist/criminal, but as mayor he did a great job and I don’t care what anybody says. All these hipsters/social justice warriors have no idea how bad it can get and are definitely clueless on how to combat crime.
In the 70s business were allowed to be open. Today business are ordered to be closed and people are surprised they are going out of business after they ran out of money. I know of several large corporate retailers that have said it’s not worth having flagship stores there anymore and shutting them down. NYC is toast and will look like Detroit for a long time.

I set-up services for businesses in NYC and shit is sad bro. All the calls of the business owners canceling because they cannot continue due to everything going on is truly disheartening.
I've been in the military in two separate stints for almost 30 years, and I've traveled much for my civilian jobs as well. I've been to 22 states, lived in 7 of them, and lived in 1 foreign country. I've learned in the last 30 years one simple rule, and it's never been challenged or disputed: conservative areas and states were always cleaner, safer, and better run with better infrastructure. Areas run by liberals (Democrats) were always dirtier, more unsafe, and poorly run with bad infrastructure. I've never seen it any other way.
That makes sense. If your social situation is good, you vote conservative to try to conserve it; if your social situation is awful, you vote progressive to try to progress to something better. That's the respective roles for right wing and left wing politicians, to conserve or to destroy and rebuild. Obviously that depends on each individual's perspective and personality to a large degree.

People who claim that NYC back in the 70's was somehow better and "cooler" need some mental help.

No way. It’s too iconic and glamorous. It’s the capital of the world. It’s the only real urban city in the USA with all the beautiful skyscrapers.
If it's so much safer now, what are you angry about?
@@JoeyMayo
It's deep in the Glaswegian DNA.
It didn't "go down" in the early 90's it PEAKED. Especially here in Chicago. You must mean mid to late 90's.🤨
The main problem with de Blasio is that he tries to be everything and doesn't satisfy anyone.
He is part of the corporate democratic machine but tries to be woke to satisfy that crowd, then tries to be progressive to satisfy that other proud. He just can't do it, he's a mess
But still, it was worse in the 80s. They're just idealizing the past.
At-least DeBlasio is making an attempt to appease the people who actually voted for him....unlike the idiots in the White House.

Sure the south has great infrastructure lmao
That makes sense. If your social situation is good, you vote conservative to try to conserve it; if your social situation is awful, you vote progressive to try to progress to something better. That's the respective roles for right wing and left wing politicians, to conserve or to destroy and rebuild.
