Its more likely that they have an increasing pool of recruits out in the colonies. Remember, the worse the Russian economy gets, the better signing up for the military looks for the poor and destitute that have nothing else. After all, they have been promised good salaries.

not only troop shortages but also equipment shortages, notice the Russians are fielding increasing numbers of T-55s and 62s and the Russians are closing prisons due to shortage of prisoners, also the new cannon fodder seems to be increasing numbers of foreign volunteers from poor third world nations in Africa, west Asia, and the Middle east.
I heard that the latest news is that female prisoners are coming to Storm Z troops. In Europe we would salute the Russians for being on the forefront of gender equality, but I assume this has to do more with problems in the Russian army. And female Russian prisoners should have babies to change the Russian demographic problems but no the problem seems to that dramatic these women are sent directly to war.

A shortage of troops is a problem for both sides, but Russia has far more human resources and certainly throw life away.
And waste they do, unlike Ukraine
Russia has a larger population, but the proportion that can be mobilized without causing political instability is far lower. In addition, Russia still has extensive frontiers that need to be guarded, and demands for internal security forces.
All of that limits how many troops they can throw at the Ukraine, and years of meat grinder tactics, and many times higher casualty rates put Russia in a tight spot.

They are exceeding there own recruitment goals. Yes, training is weak, the troops are poorly equipped, but that's still a lot of meat to send in waves on chinese scooters to wear down Ukraine. There are other areas that Ukraine can consider some good news, but maybe Russia running out of troops isn't one of them.
