Airbrush Warhammer 40K Minis with Acrylic Artist Inks! Liquitex and Daler Rowney FW Inks

  • Inks! Join me as I use acrylic artists inks to make some awesome looking basecoats on these warhammer 40k minis! These translucent inks have a ton of pigment and flow very nicely. They are ideal for use with an airbrush. When sprayed onto a pre-shaded surface, some very excellent transitions result.
This method of painting Warhammer minis has been talked about a lot recently and I had to give it a try!
I’m testing out Daler Rowney FW ink and Liquitex artist ink. Both seem to work well.

One thing I love is if you've got ink left in the cup and you want to go back and pick out details like the tops of shoulders, you can mix a drop or two of white into your cup and mix it in there before going back. Prevents you from wasting ink you overestimated needing.

I have to admit that I had never thought of airbrushing models with acrylic inks but the results are outstanding. I think the Thalo Blue would work very well as a base color for a Space Marine tank or APC. The Land Raider color is close enough to the Salamander scheme that I would finish it as such. After seeing the results a wash would really set off the color schemes. I will seriously think of using this method on a Rhino model I plan to build. Thanks for sharing this interesting and helpful tutorial.

Hi Brent, I do enjoy watching your videos I may say that A lot but I am a newer mini painter. Well I have not painted models in over 20 years so I have so much to re-learn! This is a rather old video so I imagine you have solved your blue highlight conundrum. If you are still looking for an ink answer, you might try a blue that is transparent, it will layer differently than ink with the white pigment,(like some cerulean) which tends to be opaque. You can also try to use color shift to highlight, go to a violet transparent ink for shifting your blue inks to lighter or darker! Just a splash can change an image drastically so I imagine it is the same for a mini? I hope to see more and learn more from you and your channel. Take care and be safe!

Way late to the party but I've found out the secret to get absolutely stellar effects from these inks is layering them: zenithal -> undercoat -> basecoat.
It's insane how vibrant a red you can get from undercoating with a yellow ink first, or even undercoat with a green in the shadows then yellow zenithal and finally red to get great shadows with a slight green tint that make the red pop even more!

Also, Golden's line of acrylic inks are called "high flow acrylics". The sell a product called "high flow medium", which is basically clear ink. You can use that with inks in the same way that you would mix Citadel washes with Lahmian Medium, i.e. to make their color less intense.

With some of the green/blue ones, they work rather well if you want a ghostly look. Give a good layer of white first and thin the blue or green inks (you want the brighter blues and greens, even to a more yellow-green on that end) and pretty much use a heavily thinned ink and basically treat it as a wash over the thing before then picking out things for other painting.

I've been wanting to step into inks, so this was great to see! I remember seeing someone spraying transparent inks over an undercoat like you did, but the pre-shading was colored. (both Red and green over blue shadows with yellow highlights) I tried out the red and liked it a lot- instead of just changing values from dark to light it also changed the temperature from warm to cold. It would be neat to see you do similar experiments with colored shading.
