- Monk kicked off the journey for USA Network featuring complicated good guys. Thanks to a masterclass performance from Adrian Monk, the show led the Network for ratings for years. Unfortunately, years after, despite the success, the show has disappeared a bit. Bringing it to today's new Lost and Found episode.

After all this time, Monk can seem a bit 'standard' with its police procedural affair. So, I have to take a step back and remind myself, this show made a lot of those moments typical or even iconic. @@Sword_Man_YT that's the point of my channel. I won't try to bash on any channels or anything, but a lot of people have been creating content and hitting low swinging fruit. While I have kind of picked on content, I have no want to make two hour long videos being overly critical and nitpicky on things. Not when quality content like Monk exists.

When I first got hooked on Monk, I couldn’t even imagine Tony Shaloub portray any other character. It felt like he LIVED his portrayal. His character, Monk, was so seamless episode to episode, season to season. His character arc was tragic, graceful, real and gritty.
Shaloub offscreen also came off as incredible humble, well-spoken, human, and kind.
A highly underrated performer.
The man has at least one Emmy and, I think, a Tony.
He had previously been on the show Wings and even had some of his former costars on Monk. Those were always cool for me because I loved Wings too.
The actor of Monk did a Reddit q&a and said he didn’t realize how mega popular the series was world wide till he traveled and even growing out his hair and beard outside the USA he’d still be recognized.

Netflix doesn't decide to remove them, the networks want more money or want to change streaming services.

My Grandmother introduced me to this Show, I'm so very glad she did. It's still one of my favorite shows to this day.
It's up there. Great performance from Shaloub. It's no wonder he cleaned house so many years.

The supporting cast rocked too. I was genuinely upset when Dr Kruger died. And at the time I did NOT realize Ted Levine, the lovable Leland, had played Buffalo Bill in Silence of the Lambs!

It definitely did. On rewatch, I had no idea how many episodes I stored in memory until I came up to certain moments.
At almost the very of of the last episode of psych they are in San Francisco and a reference is made to monk
Where Shawn says to chief vick if she can hire him and she says we already have a guy he is reorganizing the kitchen

Yep. This show was shown to test audiences to figure out how to get more viewers to the channel itself. From there, they figured audiences wanted a Blue Skies Mentality, Quirky Characters, and an eccentricity of success that makes viewers abroad love American entertainment so much.

This show was so emotional at times that it feels like a sad show but it has also many funny moments
While I loved Psych, Burn Notice, and (especially) White Collar, I thought some of the writing got weaker towards the later seasons. But my investment in Monk was entirely based on my connection to him as a character so I truly enjoyed all seasons and felt satisfied with the way they ended it. Thanks so much for covering this. I really like what you have to say regarding some of these shows I hold so dear. Not only am I subscribing to your channel but I’ll also check out some of the shows you recommended.

I loved it too! Some of it does NOT hold up well, but the performance by Shaloub is more than enough to tune in. That, and I think each season has a solid amount of episodes to make for some excellent comfort TV.

Its a gift..and a curse
You talked about how tragic his character is and I was a little disappointed that you didn’t use the episode where he decided to take medicine to curtail his condition. The scene of the “ghost” of his wife hugging him while he is crying because he was ashamed that his phobias let a criminal get away and telling him that whatever choice he made she would still love him is absolutely heart rending.
This is one of my favorite shows, i watched it with my family at dinner.
I would also like to add that the grand finale felt amazing imo, and left me very satisfied that the show managed to wrap itself up very nicely with a bow on top ane everything
Finale was awesome and very satisfying. I really enjoyed it.
I used to watch this show every evening monday with my sister for a long time. This show helped us through the new week, we were always excited about Monday just because of this show. Great times, great memorys..

While his fears and phobias can be seen as a hindrance, I view them more as a superpower that help him solve a lot of his cases.

Monk is a truly amazing show. I need to rewatch the whole thing.
As someone with some mental health issues that aren't terrible strong, really love how they portrayed monks mental gealth. Its very relatable!
Mary, I actually wrote in the script to talk about how I felt like Monk was on the spectrum. My Sister is, and a lot of her day to day behavior reminds me of Monk. I just didn't feel like I could get the writing appropriate and didn't want to risk making someone upset. I'm glad you relate to the character and have someone to root for! @@NaterTot absolutely love your channel!!! My brother and i are both on the spectrum and growing up Monk was such a role model. Back in the early 2000s, where a lot of shows just had bullying of people on the spectrum, seeing Monk living life(even with his handicaps) was so important. I can totally understand you not wanting to put it in in case of risking upsetting people(it can be a fine line lol). Hope you're having a great day:)
This is my favorite show ever
Monk was a TV show that the only reason why I knew of it's existence at all was because my grandma loved to watch it when it was on TV. For many years that's all Monk was to me, but then about a month ago I decided to watch it on my Amazon (it's for free if you have a Amazon account) Prime and I'm legitimately hooked and I'm at the beginning of season 3. I'm glad you don't spoil that much about the show when you make your videos on overlooked TV shows!
I tried my best to avoid spoiling anything. Honestly, his journey isn't something you can entirely spoil and is best experienced through the actual watching of show. I hope you enjoy it!

As I watched Monk first, seeing Tony Shaloub in other roles outside of it was crazy, he portrayed Monk so insanely well!
Monk use the mystery to move the story, but the character is what made me want to tune in to watch the next episode.
Check out "The Pretender" series from the late 90s. It's a pretty good show from what I remember.
Great series. I really think shows like Burn Notice borrowed from it.
I love this show and I still watch it to this day, still one of my favorites.
I was at a friends house one time and this was playing. At first I kinda dismissed it because of its cheesy music and vibe, but after just watching it, I felt interested in the characters, especially Monk. I'm on the spectrum, but I'm high functioning: I can pass for not being autistic, but I've known several people who were all over the spectrum, and I know how these people work, how to accommodate for how they work differently, and how certain things just don't click. I even get like that, to a lesser extent, but Monk didn't seem like a bad stereotype to me, he was written and performed incredibly well. He seems like a real person, and I'm happy this show exists. I've not watched it since, but it's stuck out in my mind, and I'm glad this popped up in my recommendations.
Jake, thanks for sharing your experience and your health with me/us. I had written a few lines in my script talking about how I felt Monk was written on the spectrum. While a lot of his day to day functions are limited by the trauma of his wife's passing, from childhood something else was going on. I, however, didn't want to plunge into that sort of psychoanalysis and open myself up to possible criticisms. I think Monk is handled exceptionally well and when the show does lose a step, he never does. Those corny, predictable moments are that way in part to this show making it that way. I'm glad you found me and I hope you continue to support me.

You seemed to have completely ignored Monk's first assistant, Sharona, and it seems kind of ridiculous to be complaining about the ridiculousness of the plots in a comedy show. One thing I liked about the show, especially during the first season or two was the juxtaposition of the comedy with the brutality of the murders. Two of my favorite scenes are the final scene of "Mr. Monk and the Other Woman" and the ending of "Mr. Monk and the Very, Very Old Man," where we find out why Monk's end table is crooked. Speaking of "Mr. Monk and the Very, Very Old Man," I also appreciate that the writers let Stotomeyer's relationship with Monk change over time.
I'm absolutely willing to say that this is *the* best TV Show of all time, at the absolute least it's the best detective show of all time. It's just so fucking funny, the mysteries when they're not silly and just about how the killer could have been there can actually be really clever, it's got great heart and really makes you feel like Trudy's death was the end of the world with the level of solemnity it's always given. And, as this video says, Tony Shaloub is just a world-class actor that makes Mr. Monk feel like a real person, both in the saddest days and the funniest moments. Also it's just remarkable how consistently great the show is, like Psych starts great but imo finishing it is a slog, Monk is 8 seasons of perfection

Monk is my favorite show and while it's a bit sad to hear you rank it low, I agree with your assessment that the show has some goofy episodes. You're right that Monk brought in that era of USA Network and while I personally think they never topped it, they obviously learned a lot from it. Monk has influenced me as a writer probably more than any other show because I find myself focusing so much on each individual and the group dynamics, and Monk had those down perfectly. It also has some of the best "show, don't tell" moments in anything I've seen; the scene you referenced doesn't have much dialogue but every line couple with Shalhoub's incredible acting tells the audience everything we need to know. I will always love Monk and always be kind of sore that it doesn't get much recognition anymore. I was pretty much the only teenager I knew who was into it when it was on and it's even better at 30.
Monk is awesome, I've watched it twice and I'm doing it again. I'm almost done and I'm afraid. I love it but I just want to wipe (heh) my memory, and watch it and repeat it. Its a master piece, if I ever forget about Monk, that's not me. Thats a hallow shadow of me.
I’ve decided to rewatch monk after the “monk on quarentona” vídeo. I still love Sharona. I’m trying to give Natalie a second chance but I still don’t like her. Tony Shalhoub is still one of my fav actors

I'd definitely recommend checking it out as an adult (or at least when you're older). Oddly enough, I think Adrian Monk has more going on than the show willingly admits (I considered adding this into my review but removed it). I feel as an adult and with the study of psychology, you can easily see there is A LOT more going on. It definitely makes for an entertaining watch for that simple fact.
I really wish this show got more props. I adored this show as a kid, my family first watched it when my brother was in the hospital and he needed a show to pass the time there. We all got hooked and it remains an absolute favorite. Tony Shaloub gives such an incredible performance, he brings an honesty to the character. In that, yes Monk can be out of hand, but he always brings us back to his center. That he truly cares about justice and has a loving heart.
It's a shame, I see so many people talk about the show Psych in retrospect, but for me Psych was always just the commercial that was promoted on the Monk DVDs lol. (Not dissing that show, just saying it's a shame Monk doesn't get as much nostalgic love)
I like how you pointed out how Monk was a huge part of launching the complicated detective main character procedural that would become a mainstay. Movies of course had done it, but TV, not so much.

Tony Shalhoub created a wholly unique character. I must have seen every epi 3 times. And these days with Covid I find myself singing the theme song! PS Just found your channel and am enjoying it, subbed!
I used to say the same thing about Shaloub's acting in this show. He was nothing short of brilliant.

I absolutely love Monk. My dog has learned how to sing the theme song because I watch the show so much..I love Tony. What a fantastic actor and downright sweet man.
Monk to this day is the only series that gets me to fully cry after seeing the finale truly a brittle sweet perfect ending to a s tier show
Great analysis like the other USA shows you have done. I mentioned this once, but I recommend a darker USA show called Graceland that was created by the same creator of White Collar.

So, you finally got around to Monk
Finally!
At the time of its first airing, we were already being pulled in by the other (at the time) USA Network launch show, The Dead Zone starring Anthony Michael Hall. Even though it was much darker than the content on Monk, they both did an excellent job of serving up the broken hero. I consider both of these to be the one that started it all for the network. Because Tony Shaloub is a good actor and he knows what he's doing.
I relate to this character more than anybody I've ever seen on television.
I had a traumatic experience at the age of 19 in the form of a motorcycle accident that almost killed me over a girl that cheated on me with my best friend. But some of the traits I have now have been with me from grade school like not wanting to smell people when I walk by them regardless of if it was the soap that they use that morning I just hated smelling them as I walked by them I don't know anybody else that's ever had that problem not even anybody in my own family. I have always felt like I had to wash my hands all the time but I didn't do it out of fear that other people would think I was crazy. When I saw this show it made me feel normal again this show made me feel good about myself. Drowning in his own misery sounds familiar to my psyche. I constantly feel like I'm drowning in my own misery because I am. I literally weep at the end of some of these episodes.

Shalhoub is doing fantastic work right now on the Marvelous Mrs. Maisel show. Recommend you to check that out if you haven't seen it. While the character is different from Monk, it always is a delight to see some Monk-ish mannerisms and the like in Shalhoub's performance every now and then in Mrs. Maisel.
I haven't seen it yet, but I hear he is absolutely amazing in it.
As usual I agree with pretty much every point you made. Tony Shalhoub's performance as Adrian Monk was masterful and it did have some fun situations but unlike the other shows you mentioned the rest of the cast seems a bit more in the background and the relationships between the protagonist and the rest of the cast isn't as important as his journey through the show to solve his wife's murder. (which, btw, the "smoking gun" was not as satisfying but since I don't wanna give away spoilers I can't really go into details on why I felt how he found out the person behind her murder was a little....unsatisfying) But overall it was a great show I would recommend, the show that kicked it off. (Even though it came out 4 years before Psych, which was the beginning of year after year with a release of a new cult classic show, it showed that a cable network could put out quality shows, remember, it was before SOA, The Walking Dead, Breaking Bad, ect...)

@@NaterTot It probably influenced shows outside the network too. I don't remember too many original shows on cable networks but after USA started taking off AMC, FX, TNT, ect...smaller networks got their chances to compete with network television and I think TV was better for it.

one of my favorite episodes is the episode where monk gets on a plane. the reason i like this episode so much is because ITS SO DAMN FUNNY and also kinda tragic at times and perfectly represents all of monks personalities in one episode, also the mystery is quite good and monk solves it without long before the body is discovered which shows off his talent. in conclusion THIS EPISODE IS SO GOOD YOU NEED TO WATCH IT RIGHT NOW!!!

Monk is actually my favourite show to date, and in my opinion the entire cast is extremely underrated, especially Tony Shalhoub and Ted Levine. I’m rewatching it for the 6th time right now, and I’ve noticed many things. This was a good review Nater, enjoyed watching it!
(However, I did disagree with the plot lines being “ridiculous”, I thought those added the possibility of a wider audience range and showed different sides to the actors and their skills)
I liked Monk but I couldn’t believe some of the ways the people died. Like that episode were the paperboy was pushed off a literal 5 foot staircase outside early morning.
I literally got peacock just for this show. Best show ever.

I think you missed the ball. The show is also a satire of police procedurals. The situations are outlandish, the characters mention it in quite a few episodes. The show is also semi-aware of its self. Several times Marci references things that only the viewer of the show would understand.
Marci talking about changing a shows theme song back to the original. Randy playing the bumper and theme music on a piano. Marci knowing the names of the episodes of the very show and other characters not understanding where she is getting the episode titles from. Marci lives in the show but can also obtain information that only the watcher of the show should know.

One can't imagine Tony Shalhoub NOT being a person with OCD. The first time I saw him in a different role, I didn't believe it was the same actor. He is quite normal. Great performance. I love the show. The whole cast is brillant but Shalhoub is the diamond.
Completely agree. I watch him now in different roles and see someone else entirely. Adrian Monk was a complete person. He did such a damn good job.

Monk is not only the best USA Network show but one of the best shows of all time. I also watched Psych, Burn Notice, and White Collar and I wish that USA Network would bring shows of that type back. I have been pretty disappointed with their shows over last few years and even Mr. Robot just went totally nuts after the first season.

I'm not a difficult sell so of course I like many elements of Monk, however after viewing several episodes, I had a delayed reaction little bit irritated by the show's heavy handed cutesy-,ness (with music score and over the top situations) instead of letting it unfold organically.

Monk is not the worst USA show in my opinion. They all had goofy episodes. They were all so good it's hard to say "worst" about any of them. I can't even say least favorite, or anything. Which one to watch depends on your mood. I never got into Suits or the witness protection one though.
Suits is good, but not without their issues. They all do. It's all a matter of opinion. The performance of Shalhoub really elevates this show in my opinion.
