Why Enterprise Is Better Than You Remember

  • Today's Lost and Found brings us back to the beloved franchise Star Trek with my thoughts on the last remnants of your father's Trek, Enterprise! Enterprise was, well, as I say, a weird show. It sometimes was a bit too cool for its own good but it still felt like Star Trek. It's an entertaining space adventure akin to what we have seen from Deep Space Nine or Voyager. It has grown a fanbase thanks to its characters and at times, fantastic writing.
    What did you think of Enterprise? Be sure to let me know down in the comments below!

    I want to apologize to everyone who either clicked on the video, watched or have commented on it. I did another gaffe (this is becoming a running theme on my channel, unfortunately). My thumbnail includes the title with 'Enterprise' spelled incorrectly. This gaffe was a huge mistake on my part and one that, for the moment, I will have to live with. Unfortunately, CZcams rewards consistency, especially with thumbnails, titles, tags, and descriptions. Fixing the title at this point would kill the growth on this video. This is a decision I've made, at least while the video continues to do well. I apologize in advance for those who may think differently about my content. I work and put tens of hours into each video. Sometimes, mistakes happen. I do apologize.

      LOL... not the first channel to have spelling mistakes in titles. I watch a lot of electronics videos and one channel in particular seems to always have obvious spelling mistakes either in the title or other text in the video. He doesn't proofread even though he has 500,000+ subscribers (EEVblog). Proofread, proofread, proofread, then take a break and check it all again. Also helps if you get someone else to watch your video for errors before hitting the upload button. Not many apologize though!

      It seemed as though Enterprise was being set up to fail from the get-go with an abysmal first two seasons, then it didn’t pick up steam until halfway through the third season, and it finally embraced the prequel idea in its fourth season. The damage had been done in those first two-and-a-half seasons, and it was hard for ENT to catch up, especially when newer sci-fi shows, like BSG and Stargate seemed to capture the audience’s attention.

    There's an Enterprise novel called "The Good That Men Do" that takes the final episode and sort of retcons it to something much more satisfying. Basically the history that Riker and Troi were watching was altered to hide what really happened on Enterprises trip home. Tripp's death was faked so they could insert him undercover with the Romulans. Notice he winks at Archer as he goes in the chamber before he dies, which made no sense at the time. It makes the rushed and strange ending sort of irrelevant, and the way things played out after was much much better, just wished they could've made that into the series, but at least the book was made at all.

    My thoughts on the opening song...
    When you look at it against the other series' theme songs, with their orchestral grandeur, yeah, it seems a bit off. However, if you instead look at it in the context of the show itself, and the aesthetics of the time this show represents, a pop song makes a bit more sense. I'll explain...
    Other than phase blaster type weapons and warp capable ships, the Earth of Enterprise wasn't that different from our own aesthetically speaking. The farmer in the first episode was dressed like a farmer of our time, right down to holding a phase shotgun thing, and still kept his grain in a silo like any you would see today. NX-01 wasn't all plush carpeting and comfy chairs, it was as spartan as a submarine, quarters included. The upper command of Starfleet's uniforms included a tie with a Windsor knot for god's sake!
    Using that metric, a song about going where my heart will take me is a fine fit for a show about humanity's first tentative steps into the larger universe.

      Picard and Discovery make Enterprise a Star Trek masterpiece. Enterprise episodes are a bit heavy, though after watching the social crap of Discovery and rehashing and poorly edited Picard's "boring" episodes, Enterprise is like "coming home," to use a TOS term. In Enterprise I say, "he is captured again, and tortured again?" And though the Reptilians and Insectocides are interesting, I got tired to seeing them. I good test for me is the ability to rewatch. About a third of TOS are dumb, though they have the best crew. They've got Lenard Nemoy and William Shatner. The Next Generation had a hologram deck, and Whoopee Goldberg. A key to a successful ST series is the relationship and loyalty of the captain and his/her #1. In every series, but STD, you've got that. Im rewatching Enterprise right now. Its nice. It makes sense. and I feel Im in the ST realm, not with the current crap.

I remember writing to get "TOS" renewed and it worked in a different way than I expected. Thanks for being positive about the series. The only thing I didn't like about the last episode was the "TNG" holoprogramme (please, no more holo-programmes by any ST story) and maybe the episode "A Night in Sickbay". They could've shown a story about T'Pol's visit to Carbon Creek where het great grandmother visited in '57. If they could re-do the last episode-using "The Good That Men Do" and "Kobayashi Maru" books-then "Enterprise" could have gone into the Romulan War and beyond to "Rise Of the Federation" where T'Pol is captain of the Endeavour and Archer is an Admiral. People forget that the first two seasons of TNG were awful, but because it was the sequel to TOS and the show had so many die-hard fans, it got time to establish itself and find its heart. Enterprise never got the time and people were burned out by so many series following on each other's heels, a lot of the fans just turned into savage critics rather than supporters, and certainly the network had no appetite for sticking with the franchise, which was felt to have run its course. As a die-hard fan of Enterprise even I admit that a few of the episodes (especially the early ones) were terrible, but let's remember that quite a few of the TOS ones were cringeworthy even at the time; I'm old enough to remember watching TOS when it aired, and for all that I loved the show, there were some episodes so awful I've never watched them again in all the years since.

    • @MsSissiePooh
      @MsSissiePooh Před 2 lety

      What made the series finale even worse is that even though six years had supposedly passed since the events in “Demons/Terra Prime”, the Enterprise crew weren’t participants in the Earth/Romulan War which was supposed to have occurred during that six year time span, and wasn’t even mentioned in the episode, giving the viewer the impression that it didn’t happen. The whole setup of the story left me wondering why Archer was even part of the ceremony establishing the United Federation of Planets in the first place when he, and the NX-01 crew had been relegated to being (apparently) traveling goodwill ambassadors, instead of being on the front lines in the Romulan War.
      Also, the whole “Riker on the holodeck” plot line led me to conclude that the entire series was simply a product of Riker’s runaway imagination, combined with a holodeck that didn’t work properly (this idea was later played for laughs in an episode of Lower Decks) which simply begged for a cameo appearance from Lt. Reg Barclay, which probably would’ve made the finale, and Trip’s pointless, ridiculously out-of-character death, a little easier to handle.
      After doing a rewatch of ENT on the H&I network recently with this thought in mind, this is my perception of ENT… it’s Riker’s imagination adding an interesting twist to “historical” events he’s watching play out on the Enterprise-D’s holodeck.

It's also very dark in some episodes, including some of Archer's dubious decisions, which I find refreshing and more "real". The effects, settings,the look of the technology all seems to fit perfectly for the era portrayed. The great story arcs and plot lines that are contained over several episodes also made the series more exciting and epic. All in all , an extremely underrated series which should have been provided the opportunity to evolve over the 7 seasons all the other "new" ST series were afforded. Guess who's been watching Star Trek during quarantine?
    Well, really, I finished TNG and didn't really know where else to start. I decided to watch Enterprise and here's some of my thoughts.
    One thing I immediately noticed was that Enterprise has a strong sense of continuity throughout the episodes-TNG's episodes never really seemed to correlate together at all, where as Enterprise might have one episode's actions affecting it well afterwards.
    You get the sense that what happens in Enterprise matters more, and there's always more factors that need to be considered. Humanity's reputation among the Vulcans-How other influental factions might interact with the crew of Enterprise, it's much different when in TNG they typically 'reverted to normal' after every episode (Though I do really like TNG's characters).
    It also helps that Enterprise has decent visuals. The sets appear to be more detailed, even the 'throwaway' episodes often have very well made sets. The visual effects are a slight improvement but nothing major.
    My conclusion? Even what some to be consider not a good Star Trek series is still way better than most of the Sci Fi shows we get today.

The ship was an Akira flipped on its head, the in side was a subbmarine from the 20th centurie Scott Bacula ofton phoned in most of his first two years. It was insalting. Seasons 3 and 4 were amasing and got so much better and the show really felt like they were trying hard to fix the mistakes. Show runners where changed out people where fixed and the show felt a lot better. I started to love this show. Then like you said we got that final episode. WTF was that garbage. I really loved this show. I was around 9 or 10 when they aired it in tv. Before Enterprise, i had seen episodes from the original series, TNG and Voyager, but this was the first one i watced regularly. And for a small girl that had little experience with sci fi up until that point, this was amazing! I recently rewatched it, and while i now think that some of the dialogue is kinda cheesy, i still really love the show. I loved the three main characters, and i liked the other ones well enough, alrhough hoshi and travis were kinda underdeveloped. I loved the first 2 seasons, and the whole Xindi storyline was fantastic. I really liked all the seasons actually. About the three things you mentioned as cons, i have to say, i'm one of those few who actually loved the opening credits and the song. Is it cheesy? Absolutely, but it still worked for me, even though all the other instrumental theme songs are cooler and more atmospheric. I kinda agree with the whiole soft-porn argument. I didn't mind it that much, but i would have preferred less of it. Although to be fair, there'a nudity in the original series as well. And about the argument about the finale, i couldnt agree more. I was devastated when i watched it as a kid, seeing as Tucker was probably my fave chatacter. And i hated watching it as an adult, everyththing was rushed, the whole concept with the TNG crew might have been interesting if they only had 2-3 one minute scenes. What we got was bad, and so much more focus should have been put on the Enterprise characters. Also, i'm still not over trip's death. Great video.

    Lots of good points. I've never truly understood the hate for that show.
    Though I, for one, actually liked the original version of the Enterprise theme tune! :P
    For a long time, I've been saying that we need a show where the heroes absolutely **cannot** fight their way through the majority of the time. A show which looks and feels like trek. Yes, that means a good deal of the 'nostalgia' that discovery fans tend to claim we want, but with a little dash of the disco modernism (just a dash, mind you, not a handful).

    • @NaterTot
      @NaterTot  Před 4 lety +2

      Gareth, thanks for the kind compliment. A lot of my knocks, in particularly the sexual scenes were just for 'entertainment' purposes. I don't really think they negatively effected the show or anything like that. I just found a joke to make. I think the actual theme is okay but I do prefer the more cinematic orchestrated music. It always just put me in the sense of discovery mood.
      I have no issue with Disco. As I responded above, I believe there is a place in the world for both. If the audience finds entertainment in it, then there is no real issue with it. The whole thing is subjective anyways. I personally wish it had more of the Trek feel and some less of the 'well, this looks cool'.

    • @garethfairclough8715
      @garethfairclough8715 Před 4 lety +1

      I have issues with disco. In fact, I have done since it started.
      Ultimately, I think it's trying too hard to be "hip" and "modern", not only in looks and content but in tone and style.
      I've always thought that a good trek show should be able to be adapted to the stage with relatively small changes. Indeed, I think all good TV shares that. Disco, however, doesn't. Trek has always been an old school show at heart, going all the way back to the days of TOS, when the big thing in TV was to set it out like a stage play. Granted, back then that was the case because no one really knew other ways of doing it, rather than it being "the new hot thing".
      It's why I think modern trek (and a lot of modern TV, to be honest) falls so flat. That lack of "stage acknowledgement" (for want of a better term) means we lose all the drama and all the agency of the piece. The actors just don't react to each other, they're not listening to one another and that's fatal.
      It's all about flash & spectacle now.

They should stand behind the shows and come to agreement with the producers to renew a fifth season by capitalizing off of reruns and future syndication. You would also think that coming up with the money to independently produce a fifth season should be easier for all these Hollywood connected bigwigs.

And the song fits these sentiments perfectly. ENT - A study should be made on how Billingsley took Phlox from an unknown alien entity to a character on par with Spok's iconic measure but denied this stature due to the show's limited audience and overall castigation by Treknaughts (pun).
    My evaluation for the rest:
    Scott Bakula as Capt. Archer - never was convinced that another actor couldn't have played the part and delivered more but Bakula held his own ( ex. No one can imagine TOS or TNG without Shatner or Stewart but might see Voyager sans Janeway played by Mulgrew though it might be the writing, here). The water polo was a gimmick that tried too hard and failed but a minor blip. Archer was just a bit stiff and underwhelming but again, Bakula held the wheel enough to not veer off the road.
    Jolene Blalock as Sub-Cmdr. T'Pol - a Vulvan in a cat suit. The idea obviously was from TOS movie but retooled for this purpose. The problem was the overt sexuality which could and should have been more subtle and reserved for limited scenes. She came across as eye candy first, Vulcan, second. And frankly, there is no lasting impression of her except eye candy. Blalock might have suffered from producers, writers and directors but she seemed plug and play in her execution.
    Connor Trinneer as Cmdr Charles "Trip" Tucker III - classic Star Trek character. Trinneer is believable from the start. His execution appears effortless. One episode that was a disservice was when he convinced the androgynous character to exercise its rights ultimately leading to its death. He simply would not have been so impetuous (this would have been an Ensign doing this) and Archer giving him a moral lecturing in response was like having to eat bat. Anyway, Trinneer isn't replaceable and added quite a bit.
    Dominic Keating as Lt. Malcolm Reed - in the tradition of TOS it seemed the writers and producers of ENT were looking for the classic triangle between Reed, Trip and Archer but ended up just with a binary tension between Reed and Trip. That aside Keating does a great job and is again, the essential to ENT. His subtleties are often overlooked, using great pauses, eye and face positioning and inflection that requires paying attention.
    Linda Park as Ensign Hoshi Sato - not sure Sato was written as well as needed. She seemed quite capable of more range but seemed to be scripted with limited scope. Clearly an academic in space but the character's timidity seems unrelated to academia. Still, this is a good character and Park delivers what is asked but definitely is denied her character's IQ power in the scripts which would have made her more memorable.
    Anthony Mongomery as Esign Travis Mayweather - Montgomery may have the chops but it is never a discoverable thing. He seems to be written with a substantial dose of "generic guy" serum. The relationship between Archer and Mayweather could have been a dynamic. Mr. Anal and Mr. Chill. As it stands, the character was essentially inconsequential.
    Reoccurring
    Gary Graham as Ambassador Soval - can't see anyone else doing it other than his predecessor. Graham rightly made one resent Soval.
    Jeffery Combs as Cmdr. Shran - took a minor alien and made him a star. End story.
    Matt Winston as Temporal Agent Daniels - the minute you learn he's a Temporal agent, you say, " I knew it". Great casting, here.
    You might think with the critique that ENT is last on the list of favs. Nope. It is 2nd fav overall, TOS, first.
    I think a movie would sell, 15 years later with some advances in tech for ship design but using the Temporal narrative.

    I have been a fan of Star Trek since I saw TOS as a little boy in the '60's. I have watched every incarnation of the franchise and all the movies. As for ST:Enterprise I thought highly of it during its original run on UPN. The H&I network has been showing most of the episodes for quite some time now. I caught the last 2 seasons during the first run and I have watched from the beginning during H&I's 2nd run of the series. I believe I appreciate it even more now than I did during its UPN airing. I have been blown away by some of the story ideas, as well as the acting in the episodes. It is now nearing the end of the Xindi story line, which I have found very exciting and mostly very well done. It has almost been like seeing the series for the 1st time because I really didn't remember most of the episodes. I must say, though, that when I saw the final episode during the 1st H&I run I didn't remember it at all. Unfortunately my opinion was that it probably was on of the worst and most disappointing episodes of not only Enterprise but of the entire Star Trek franchise.
