  • Star Trek Enterprise was cancelled nearly 15 years ago. It ended after four bumpy seasons. It found its footing, but it was a season or two late. Thankfully, leaked documents and interviews later we learn about season five of Enterprise. It would have been great to see Captain Archer in at least one more season, especially with some of these great ideas!

@@NaterTot My biggest problem with the show was that the writers forgot that there were no food replicators on the ship. The ship never had a food shortage or issue. They said they had a "protein resequencer" that could make simple stuff like pasta and imitation potatoes, but you can't live on that. They needed fresh vegetables, pecans for Trip's pecan pie, etc. Someone told me that they mentioned a hydroponics bay, but on a ship that size, it couldn't have been big enough to feed the crew for extended periods.

    • @russellharrell2747

Darin Wagner well, the xindi arc showed they could deal with the more realistic concerns of being far into deep space with no chance of repairs or resupply at a friendly base. But, similarly, the writers ignored a lot of logistical problems during Voyagers run as well, even if replicators could Hans wave many problems.
It just seemed odd which technologies they chose to include in the NX and which were ‘impossible’ by the 22nd century. Working transporters that can beam humans safely despite ‘The Cage’ implying that feature being recent, if not transporter tech being a 23rd century invention. Phase pistols replacing lasers despite that also being called out in the TOS pilot. But no force fields/shields or tractor beams! I would have thought tractor beams would have been easy once navigational deflectors were a thing, which they are, on the NX.
But continuity in trek is a fickle thing, and it’s probably best to just say the MST3K mantra and enjoy the show.

The best moment in Star Trek Enterprise is when the Vulcan Ambassador to Earth admits that humans demonstrate a superior ability to overcome wars. He continues to explain, what took Vulcans 1,500 years to overcome, humans will accomplish in less than a century. This intrigued me as I could see the series really expanding on this concept. I hated the part that people seem to like the most-- the temporal war. I just don't see how that was supposed to be cannon. For me, that was the beginning of the end of Star Trek. The could have just gone straight into the Romulan war, and that would have made more sense. I enjoyed the episodes that outlined the history of Starfleet and the groundwork for what would be the Federation of Planets. But, 9/11 happened. It's like CBS was trying to use 9/11 to make Trek more popular. I was always uncomfortable about that. Trek was to escape to a better time. Sure, Trek wasn't loaded with action constantly, but it did have an in depth story. I miss that. I'm sad that people don't agree. Star Trek will only be a shadow of what it once was. It will now only resemble Star Trek the way it once was. Remember this: the original series was created on a tight budget with most of the set made of cardboard and balsa wood. Yet, they still enchanted the imaginations of a generation. TNG took that, added a higher budget, and made Star Trek into something even more fantastic. Now, they spend more money on the special effects than on the writers. I want my story back even if I have to go back to cardboard.

People like the Temporal Cold War? Who? I love Enterprise, but even I see it as the weakest part of the show. The trouble is while Berman wanted to go backwards, the studio wanted to go forwards, and that was the compromise. Berman’s feeling, and I respect it, was that after Voyager, the tech was getting so advanced, it was making it harder to write compelling drama that the tech wouldn’t just fix and trash any sense of danger. That’s why he wanted to go backwards in the first place. The studio forced the Temporal Cold War on him. It was a mistake.

@@2bituser569 Right. The thing is in the case of both Voyager and Enterprise, had Berman walked away, the studio was still going to put something out there. They were the ones that demanded new Trek, even when Berman told them to slow down. That was very much the case with Voyager. The studio made demands from a creative standpoint that kind of crippled the various shows. 100% Enterprise.
After TNG ended, the studio turned to Berman and wanted to know when the new Star Trek show was coming out. They had a new network they wanted to push. Berman told them to let DS9 exist on it's own for a while. The studio wasn't interested in that response. So, here came Star Trek: Voyager!
I'm personally happier that Rick Berman, the man I see as practically ordained by Gene Rodenberry, decided to stay and not let someone else do it. While his Trek wasn't always perfect, it was made with love and an attempt to keep the tone and feel of Trek the same. I've been watching Trek since the 60s, but I was shocked at my wife's reaction to Enterprise. She had never watched a single episode but did enjoy the JJ Abrams movies as well as Ron Moore version of Battlestar Galactica and other space shows. I've always told her I thought she'd enjoy Star Trek since she liked other sci-fi movies and shows. One day, she said she wanted to try it out and I showed her a few select episodes of TOS. She kept having a lot of questions so I thought, the best way to help is to show her things in a more chronological order which meant that she needed to see the movie, "First Contact," and then move on to Enterprise. I realize there are episodes that predate both of these, but I thought that showing how things started with warp engines and Vulcans would help her get a solid footing for the canon. She has LOVED Enterprise (although, we're about to start watching the whole "space Nazis" season which is what I consider to be when Enterprise jumped the shark). Even with the shark jump, I still think there are some outstanding episodes here and there during the latter half of the series...especially the "In a Mirror, Darkly" episodes in the final season. Hopefully, she'll want to stay with it. This started off as a way to avoid the monotony that is living under the spectre of COVID19, but I'm hoping she'll eventually be as enamored of all the series and movies (except the fifth OS movie) as I am.

The way I look at it is that if a season 5 had been made, the episode 'These Are the Voyages...' never would have existed. It was a rushed ending to the series that wouldn't have been necessary with a season 5 renewal. So with Trip presumably still alive in season 5, I would have loved to see the Trip/T'Pol relationship continue to develop (maybe even ending up in marriage).
I also would have loved to see an escalating conflict with the Romulans, eventually transitioning into all-out war by the end of the season. The season 5 finale could have been the Enterprise being faced down by, say, two or three Romulan warbirds and Archer saying "fire" right before the scene cuts away to a "To be continued..." screen. And then the season 6 premiere could have picked up with the Columbia or Shran swooping in to help the Enterprise just in the nick of time.
Oh man, I would have loved to see that Enterprise refit. I can even see it working with the story as a response to the war with the Romulans.

I am afraid though that Star Trek currently will not find an audiance big enough to carry a show over multiple seasons. The makers are all aiming for very long running shows with way over 10 seasons. Ther could be a trek show running that long or even longer BUT the current PC climate and many "social" issues make it very complicated to approach the topics of "social development and political tollerance etc." Star Trek is famous for.

Lots of ideas still kicking around for a 5th season, would have been interesting to see which ones and how they would have implemented.
However, I think B&B would still have saved TATV for the series finale, no matter which season that ended up being. It is written in such a way that it can be tacked on anywhere and it was their "love letter to the fans" after all...

I really enjoyed your video, all of the ideas mentioned in your video I’m sure could be made possible, just needs a good screenplay. The one I like the most is about T’Pol’s father being Romulan, and we need more on a Romulan conflict. I know many people were upset with Enterprise as a show due to its lack of respect to canon, I think it was a great show, it ended prematurely. Thank you.

literally ANYTHING they could have done with a 5th season of Enterprise, would have been HEAPS better than the garbage that is currently being passed off as Star Trek.

Nah. The current stuff is pretty fantastic. Once we got past the rough first season of Discovery Season 1, all the new series are incredibly good. I feel sorry for anyone who is stuck on nostalgia and refuses to accept anything new.

@@johnchedsey1306 it has nothing to do with nostalgia, or refusal to accept something new... it's about the shows being lazy, poorly written, dumbed down crap, pretending to be Star Trek. Lower Decks is the only one that's even trying, and it's still complete shit. Long-time fans know it's crap for so many more reasons than i'm prepared to list here..

Well, the obvious answer is Trip would still be alive due to the fact that the final episode "These Are the Voyages..." was set 10 years after the beginning of the show. There would be several years between the episodes "Terra Prime" and "These Are the Voyages..." that could be explored.

Great recap , thank you .. I loved the show and the characters, my issue happened with the "Xindi" storyline. when 6 weeks go by and no real progress is made it is hard to stay engaged. Although a couple of great episodes happened like "in a mirror, darkly" but overall I believe in the end it was the writers that caused the ratings drop.

Great video; the most intriguing idea is Topol having a Romulan father. It would explain her emotional and sexual outbursts, because they were very un-Vulcan. I am surprised and disappointed that Netflix did not want to give this show another chance, even if the original actors were unavailable or not interested. They did it with Lost in Space!
