Best way to remove a broken exhaust stud or bolt (how to) and save the threads

  • I often see the question asked “how to remove broken exhaust studs or broken bolts” and save the threads. In my experience, this technique will work on any broken or stripped bolt or stud, not just exhaust. If you don’t have a welder and are using an easy out, the quench technique along with tapping the stud or bolt with a hammer will also greatly improve your chances of success. I just wanted to share how I do it, and it has never let me down. The specific technique I use does require a TIG welder, but I have confirmed you can use this method with flux core or wire feed. The only welder I have is a TIG, so I have never tried other welding disciplines, for the same results. I hope it helps. What did you weld to it?

      Ryan Detto nothing more that (ER70-2) filler rod. I just dabbed the rod and built it up vertically until I could get some vice grips on it. I’m doing an LS tear down video right now and trying to get good arc shot on how to remove the broken exhaust bolts out of the heads. For a better demonstration, but I’m having problems with reflections or the camera not focusing correctly. Hopefully I’ll be able to get it figured out for you. Thanks for watching!

      Oh ok I’m doing my headers on a 305 Chevy caprice using a mig with flux core I built up weld until it was flush and welded about 15 nuts some with washers but all twisted right off, do I need a stronger bond with a better welder or should I switch to a small angle drill and extractor or is it too late from all the weld I built up

    This is the first video I have seen that actually removed a rusted broken bolt. Great job.

    Small metal tubes work as well with stick welder or mig saves the threads

    If you can tig you can mig.
    Mig is the homegamers welder as its the easiest to learn but also creates bad habits which are hard to shift if you move on to more complicated welding techniques.

    Just wondering do you ever use a stick welder anymore????

      I don’t. I’ve never learned it so I’m terrible at it, and I’ve never really found the need to for the type of work I do.

    I intend on getting a welder you say tig is better ? Any videos maybe on some tig welding? Great video got thus issue atm ordered a bolt extractor my motorcycle header bolts 2 out in one 2 others snapped but studs showing 4 more to go (4 headers ) cheers

      Before you attempt to remove the remaining bolts make sure to heat them with a torch tap them with a hammer and quench the bolts with water. They will not break off in the head if done correctly. I can’t say TIG is better, I feel it’s more versatile. MIG is far faster but TIG can be used for mare than just sticking two pieces of metal together. Check out weldingtipsandtricks here on CZcams. Jody is a great wealth of knowledge. Thanks for watching and the sub!

      @@Chadlistentome thank you I've used my (not the hottest being butane) torch to heat it up I know map gas be better I've not used water method yet I've tapped etc with hammer I want them 9ut but plating safe will I not crack the head ? Thanks for tip on welders I intend on investing and practising I've currently got my mates arc not a fan so far I'm.not bothered about sparks etc just don't seem to get along with it

      The gas isn’t very important as long as you can get it hot enough to change the temper of the bolt with the water quench.

    Good job but how you skip the whole welding process ??

    • @Chadlistentome
      @Chadlistentome  Před 4 lety

      Rodney Jennings the only way I know of would be using an easy out. I would drill the bolt, then heat it with a torch, and shock it with water. If you try to heat cycle and shock it before drilling, you run the risk of hardening/tempering the bolt, which will make it near impossible to drill.

    If you have oxy acetylene braze the crack after drilling holes each end of the crack.
    Good video bud but could of been excellent if you recorded the most interesting part...welding.

      IAN CAMPBELL thank you. I learned from making this video that arch shots are difficult to get right. I actually just bought a MIG (today) so I will be learning that, and the LM7 I purchased in another video has a couple of broken studs in the heads. I’m going to work on a more comprehensive video in the near future for removing studs out of the LS platform, and hopefully get some better arch shots. Thanks for watching and your feedback is appreciated!

    You didn’t even show the most technical bit

    • @Chadlistentome
      @Chadlistentome  Před 3 lety +2

      Actually what I showed was the most technical bit. What I’m demonstrating is the metallurgical process necessary for the highest level of success. So I guess what I didn’t show was how to weld a nut on a broken stud, or hot to build up weld filament using the GTAW (TIG) process, or more importantly what you felt you needed to see. I do apologize for that. However learning to create CZcams videos is actually very time consuming, and I feel my videos are getting better with time. I’m working on a video right now on how to remove an exhaust bolt so that you don’t break it to begin with. Thanks for watching!
