Put some aluminum Foil under the Oil filter when removing it. , Mold it to drain down into a separate Pan you hold in your hand. No need to have that mess we all know when we take off a Harley oil filter.

He said its the break in oil. So that oil change was really about flushing all the metal particles out. Not because the oil was worn.
Remove the crankshaft position sensor and measure how much, if any oil come out of the dry sump with the bike hot & upright. If 6 oz. or more it is sumping, see H-D Service Bulletin, M1450. My '18 CVO Limited SE 115th Anniversary did, yours can too.

If your oil level is low and your bike seems sluggish make sure it is not wet sumping. The M8 engine seems to have this issue on the earlier models. Also , feuling recommends not to use synthetic oil along with their oil pump and cam plate to get rid of the sumping problem. I went through this on a 2018 CVO bagger. You’d think Harley would have it figured out by now.
We have not experienced any of the sumping problems. But yes they are an issue on early M8 models

Was it just me or did he torque down that oil filter Big Time! Hand only and I think 1/2 turn after gasket makes contact.

Hand tightening is the correct way IF you can do so. Otherwise, seat the filter by hand until it makes contact then use the wrench to tighten 1/2 -3/4 more turn. Result is the same.

Very cool you prefill the filter, been doing that for years on everything I own. NEVER seen anyone else do it. Not sure it's necessary, but since the end state is a filter that is fully saturated, why not go ahead and pre-fill the filter, rather than waiting a few seconds for the oil pump to do it ?

yes to preoil filter. especially since these efi bikes jump to high revs so fast. cant really bump the starter like older bikes

Why does HD use o-rings? Why not a milled surface and a copper washer?

now on that drain plug in stall. i heard that Harley said to put 565 loctite on it that has ptfe on it... what do you say???
The HD manual says nothing about loctite on the plug. I would make sure the o-ring is in good shape and torque to 14-21ftlbs.
on that oil filter install... Harley David said to just touch oiled up rubber seal then turn 1/2 to 3/4 tighter... what do you say???
Snug it up 1/2 to 3/4 is fine. The biggest thing is not to over tighten the filter, it will eventually draw down a bit and tighten more overtime. As long as its not leaking your'e good.

Just curious why you would add possibly contaminated oil to filter before putting on?
It was brand new oil from a brand new bottle. The idea is to keep as much air out of the system as you can.
What did you use to clean the oil filter receptacle with?

Great video, how does Motul differ from HD’s own oil? I’m in the UK and we get Motul 7100 but not the Motul RSD Twin oil? Also what filter did you use and is there any benefit from an upgraded one?
Its a Twin Power filter. Its beneficial to use a quality filter just for piece of mind. You want stick with a trusted brand so you don't have to worry about filter internals falling apart or particulate getting by an inferior element. Filters are cheap motors aren't. Without getting into the weeds on oil specifics the best way to think about MOTUL vs HD oil would be this - MOTUL has been in the lubricant business since 1853, researching and developing oils. Harley makes motorcycles and uses a 3rd party to source its oil.
That’s my thoughts exactly, how does the Motul 7100 differ from the Motul RSD Twin oil? Both designed for big twins.
@@jpcycles what's your opinion on Bel-Ray? I used that based off my local shop's recommendation for my first oil change on my 2019 RK. I used to use Maxima Vtwin on my stage 3 883 very good oil.

I've seen the fill quantity be anywhere between 4.5 and 5.2 quarts. I'm thinking its 4.5 prelubing the filter and 5.2 not prelubing. K&N oil filters have a socket head on them. No need needing a filter wrench ever again.
My 2018 street glide takes 3.5 quarts.

@@timwestlake2197 nope that’s what mine takes. Maybe they put bigger pan on some. The book on mine even says 3.5. I always check it and it’s good.
At least harley has put some engineering into that dipstick. The manufacturer of my bike tells me to read the oil level when the bike is in a upright position. Too bad this bike doesnt come with a center stand. Sidestand only... 🤦🏼♂️
What did you spray in area after you removed oil filter?
Brake clean, to clean up the oil that spilled on the engine case.

They sold me 6 quarts of oil at the dealer for my 114 m8... 5.5 quarts into it i over flowed. drained aprox. 1 quart, checked and it was under the fill line... added the last 1/2 quart I had into it, checked and it was half way up the jiffy stand side. Started it and ran it for a few and waited and checked it again and it's at the bottom of the oil level on the stick... WTF?

What happens if its overfilled?
Put 4 quarts in, run it, check levels and add till you're good on the measurement stick. The reason H-D service manual does not advise putting all 4.7(?) quarts is because even after draining, there's still some retention in various areas and your replaced oil filter. If you overfill there will be more pressure on your seals and gaskets, and generally you will end up getting oil leaking to the air filter. Not good, but I've never seen a case of severe damage from overfilling. I have replaced gaskets on a dirtbike that was overfilled and that bike ran like a champ for over a decade. If you put too much, drain some out and keep checking the stick.
What is the purpose of the sump plug? Oil changes? Why does the plug even exist?
So how long before you have to change the transmission oil
The first service you or dealer touches all 3 holes.So Engine,Tranny,and Clutch which is called the Primary get drained at that first service.There after Transmission can go for uh while.It doesn't suffer from the combustion chamber and carbon build up.So i think it's like at the 20,000 or 25,000 mile service.Could be wrong,check owner or service manual.
So your saying on the m8's the clutch is run off the primary fluid? Interesting.....

What oil u recommend and how many mile I can run on it ?
That would depend somewhat on what kind of bike you have. We used MOTUL for this bike. For this particular bike the factory recommends every 5000 miles.
