But in too many cases have become a source of over policing targeting certain neighbors ignoring your buddies blatant violations etc.

Some poeple love to live under extreme rule. The country you live in has rules, then the state, then the county, then the city, then the neighborhood... Our jobs have rules, our households, language, math, physics, etc... all have rules. Then... people join religions with even more rules.

@@neil999ishI worked in HOA. It's not the HOA board that has the Lawyers on retainer.
It's the property management corporation that pays for the lawyers.
Just a quick heads up. When you by in to an HOA, your not buying the land only the house. The property corporation owns the land, your just buying the house.
So that being said..the HOA board answers and does the bidding of the property management company and lawyers.
The board's job is to line the property management bank accounts and pockets.
I worked in enough of them and went toe to toe with board members & even the lawyer. I even got 2 layers from a HOA/property management company disbarred in FL.
Yeap the only security guy who kept videos, pictures and lots of notes and copies of incident and daily activity reports.
In one case, the HOA president was banning the married property management lawyer.
In lue of not having to pay his dues and fees as well doing her bidding to go after only certain people.
The other the HOA board and the property management lawyer tried to do everything they could to turn the community pool in to adults only. They made the pool club house area a swingers deal with family and kids in the community. She wanted the HOA to find ways to force the family out with kids..
The lawyer, all the board members went to jail most got 1-3 yrs prison time..the community no longer run as a HOA. The city and county took legal action and got the HOA disbanded.

Malicious compliance is the answer. I lived in a community that tried to institute an HOA. I declined to participate and they decided to fine me out of the neighborhood I lived in for nearly 10 years. When we went to court the Judge just laughed, counseled The "HOA" they had no authority to fine me. I got $48k and they were order to pay my costs. Turned out later the HOA president, an Attorney, had done this same thing before in 3 other states. He was severely beaten one night in his driveway. No witnesses came forward. He sold his house and moved away.

I lived in HOA in Suwanee Georgia. We had a sex offender on the board, and the board tried to use their power to force someone to move. It took us an entire summer, but we finally ended up with enough proxy votes to completely remove the board and put in new people who were just and honest. After that we put our house up for sale and vowed to never live in an HOA again. In today’s climate having a homeowners association actually seems to devalue your property, as no one wants to live in one. As for buying a house, if you inquire as to whether or not it is A homeowners association neighborhood, They are required to tell you. If you feel you’re being lied to simply ask neighbors. It’s always best to meet the neighbors before you buy a house in the neighborhood anyway.

I got hooked into an HOA, out at Cedar Creek Lake in Texas, I bought a little bitty lake lot, and suddenly I was trapped with taxes to 3 different counties, and they at those tax offices , all had a part in this scam to take advantage of American Taxpayers.....Next thing I know I was sent a letter said I had 24 hours to mow the lot, else they would charge a fee of $ 275.00, I lived 6 hours away from there..... I DONATED THE LOT TO A PREVIOUS PASTOR AT A CHURCH IN Dallas, Texas, Took the whole price of that tiny insignificant lake lot off income taxes, No one would buy it because of the criminals in charge at Cherokee Shores HOA.....The pastor got it, and since a church owned it they couldn't stop him from selling it to an out of state resident I think, don't really know how he got rid of it, but he did because he was a nonprofit organization....I will NEVER have ANYTHING to do with ANY HOA again as long as I live... Ended up costing me over a $4500.00 loss on my income tax that year....Once was enough, I won't be fooled again by those horrible people...I warn everyone to stay away from HOA scams !!!! Had a drunk in charge of the HOA when I first bought into that problem....He took care of all his beer drinking buddies, he didn't like the idea of a Christian family being around interrupting his loud wild BBQ weekend parties with kegs of beer....This has been years ago !!! The music was so loud you couldn't talk to people standing beside you, as no one could hear anything but the loud bass noises......

I've lived in an HOA house and didn't have a problem. But, I wasn't given the rules binder (a 3-inch binder stuffed with documents) until I was at the signing. There's no way I could read all that while there and the people there at the signing said they wouldn't allow me to sit and read them for several hours in their office. It wasn't until I was in the house that I had the documents and time to read them. It should be a law that you have to be given ALL the HOA and county documents at the time of offer of acceptance so you have that 3-day window to back out. Those documents should include county docs like flood zone, hazard reports, etc. that I didn't get until the signing. That gives time to read and get answers before being locked in. That isn't the way it currently works. The whole process feels like a huge bait and switch event.
