War Thunder Tricks #2 | German Airbrake
Vložit
- čas přidán 24. 12. 2017
- The second video in my "Tricks" series demonstrates how to effectively use 100% prop pitch on German aircraft to slow down, as if it were an airbrake. I've had a lot of practice in it recently, and I think I've reached a competent level. Included in the video are examples of when and how to use it, with dogeness as the enemy.
Perhaps this trick will help you fight undertiered Allied aircraft ;).

Adam and Grern fury are the best educators I have ever watched especially the boom and zoom tactics from green fury
Yeah, green fury’s little lessons has probably single handedly brought up my success rate by 20%
Especially the boom and zoom ones. So helpful
Keep in mind when you do this in an FW-190 when you're fast, your engine still overrevs.
That's kinda the point ;). If you mean that the engine gets damaged at high speed, yeah you may want to run 90% prop pitch on Fw190s instead of 100%.
Yeah meant the dying part x)
Turn the engine off completely, wont overrev unless something changed
hi defyn, 4 years later. BIG fan. 👌👌
Germans like using other body parts of their planes as airbrakes like me163's rudder
Lol yeah, but they fixed the rudder airbrake on the 163 and Ki200, it's reasonable now.
HE did it. “I’ll show you a little trick I learned ;)”. Good one Adam :D. Also, Merry Christmas! Thanks for the good videos dood.
Haha thanks! You too!
It was actually utilized in ww2 by some German pilots, however irl using the airbrake maneuver had a significant downside: it reduced the pilot's ability to control the aircraft. When the propeller blades were set to a coarse angle, they would generate a large amount of torque that could cause the aircraft to yaw or roll unexpectedly, making it difficult for the pilot to maintain control. Additionally, the maneuver could cause the engine to stall if the throttle was not carefully managed. It was used in some situations, most likely used for tighter turning. Pretty interesting concept and history!
I recently found an airbrake myself!! On the J2M2 at altitudes under 1 km, supercharger gear 2 is extremely ineffective and MASSIVELY slows down the plane when you are on WEP. Your speed doesn't just stay level - it actually decreases a lot, even when you are diving at steep angles. I tend to use this feature for low-level dogfights: I can easily stay on a Yak-3's tail using it, and often surprise him in a low-altitude turn / energy fight (not a pure turnfight; he is still very good there). I mainly use it as insta-throttle: switching the supercharger gears is a lot faster than manually holding my hand over the throttle key, and I can get on his six within the first turn and then instantly whip my throttle back up to full so I can out-climb him when he inevitably tries to stall-fight.
I don't have local host or anything, so I don't know if this just reduces thrust a lot or actually produces negative thrust, but believe me when I say the speed absolutely tanks when I use it.
Caveat: I usually switch supercharger gear at around 2800 m, so at altitudes of 1500 m and above, the supercharger becomes effective enough that it is not an airbrake. ONLY use this for extremely low altitude! And also, I'm not saying to turnfight Yak-3's at low altitude! High altitude energy fighting is the superior strat against them, but hey, what's life without a little fun?
Hmm interesting! It would be pretty odd if 2nd gear gave negative thrust though.
I found this maneuver a little while ago and it's saved my life so many times when limping back to base in my g-2/trop and an enemy spit decides to go for a free kill. I usually do it in a straight line to make them think I'm a defenseless plane with no maneuverability anymore. Also very helpful putting prop pitch to 0% when your engine dies and you need to glide to base.. what I'm realizing here as i type this is i get shot and disabled too much..
Yeah definitely a useful trick.
You can also fire the guns to bleed speed if you have a high enough burst mass, or are flying a light aircraft.
Yeah, but most of them (the wing mounted guns) reduce your turn also. It's also well-known to the enemy of what you're trying to do.
Nice videos man! You and Dogeness should get more views because these tricks are helping me alot.
Thanks! Feel free to share our channels with your friends!
Yeah, sure, will do!
I agree! Affirmative!
Adams! I saw you in a match yesterday! Thought i was finally gonna be able to dance with ya a little, you were in a corsair and i was in my G14AS, we both took some shots from each other then a p51 got me. I was a little target fixated lol. I flew that BR the rest of the night hoping to cross paths again but no luck
Hey! I remember!
Yes you did get fixated, and you paid the ultimate price ;).
Adam514 haha. Yes i did, you flying around that BR again tonight?
Nope I signed out a few hours ago. I should be online even more than usual this week though.
And now that i think of it, i don't think any of my shots landed.
Not on me no ;).
The physics of war thunder is so good. Its marvelous just watch.
Thanks Adam to demonstrate these kind of maneuvers.
Hahaha this might be beyond the realm of physics though!
Perfect war thunder channel
Thanks mate!
I learned the hard way that the IAR-81C has these characteristics, too, which is strange because it's a Romanian plane, and the only German thing about it is the cheek clapping MG151s. It's got a Gnome-Rhône engine and it's in the Italian tree.
I did not make it to the airfield.
Oh yeah.
@@AdamTheEnginerd I suppose it would have made more sense if it was the IAR-80 with the BMW 108 or the 81 with the DB605, but this is neither of those variants.
Do you have any idea why this may be? Or is it just going to forever be one of the certifiably Gaijin quirks?
That's some nice smexy music to go with the video ;) Wish spitfires will overshoot, but they pull up pretty quickly to prevent that, and so messing with prop pitch might not be so helpful. Merry Christmas Adam! :)
Then you pull up with them! They ragequit quite quickly afterwards though ;).
My dream duel is Adam against Messer Smitty in this plane
Haha G10?
@@AdamTheEnginerd That would be cool, or any other 109! Please arrange that 😁
It doesn't look like he plays much anymore.
@@AdamTheEnginerd It's because he is on Philippines working, but he stays only for month and a half. Anyways it's nice to see that you are replying on comments eaven on a few months old videos. 😀
Of course!
Damn. Red tails manouver is real!
Haha a more realistic maneuver than Red Tails.
Using this in the best 109. Why is the G-10 best 109? High top speed? Better supercharger than previous 109s? Long rear wheel strut? Better matchmaking than the K-4? No. It is good because it is green.
Haha!
The only issue with this is that an experienced Allied pilot can at least partially counter it using almost the same technique. Cutting throttle and sending prop pitch to max on almost any plane produces a solid amount of negative thrust. I've never used it in actual combat myself simply because I fight with my speed, but if I need to make a short landing it can allow me to reduce the length of my approach to almost half sometimes. I've used it to descend at over 5000 ft/min in a B-17 as well, at low speed, which can cause me to bleed so much energy that I can often undershoot the runway.
Depends on the plane, on Bf109s it's multiple times more effective than the average plane though.
@@AdamTheEnginerd Hence it only being a partial counter. Does help though.
If you want an even harder brake, turn your engine on. The higher the throttle, the harder the brake. Don’t leave it on for too long or else you’ll kill ur engine
Well 0% is already massive enough, and no need to risk it. But indeed I've noticed that at some % throttle it's more effective.
I was looking for this soloution for a year ... thanks man ... it helps alot
My pleasure mate! Welcome!
Hey man, I was using this airbrake to slow down for landing in sims. I was about to think to use it in combat. I set up control to simultaneously open radiators, set prop pitch to 100% and turn off thrust. I thought that it is not so much known in community.
It's still not well known for sure, it requires MEC too.
Excellent stuff on your channel, lucky me that I have found you. :)
Thanks mate!
With this u could do amazing cobras
Not really cobras, but can cause overshoots.
I was playing with a p400 (I prefer low tier) and some guy in a ki-45 otso did this to me (or something similar) and it completely caught me off-guard, his plane was practically tailgating me lol. the match before, some aced pilot with a fw190 shredded me with some fancy maneuvers, I really should learn how to effectively engage players (I have only been playing war thunder a few months now, I know how to effectively use mec but I barely know any good maneuvers)
oh yeah tricks in full realistic controls you should've said
It's just MEC.
Very good tutorial. Continue making this kind of videos.
Also thx 4 learning me something new today ;)
Thanks man! I will!
Adam514 no problem, only if i had ur skill at dogfighting :(

Thanks man!
How can you fully customise all of your controls though ... I can't find the prop pitch .
You need to set up Manual Engine Controls (MEC) in Full Real Controls. There are tutorials on how to do it on CZcams.
I can't seem to make it work, am I doing it wrong?
1) Pre-set prop pitch to 100% then switch to auto prop pitch.
2) Trigger airbrake by setting throttle to 0 and enabling prop pitch to back manual (preset to 100%)
> propeller slows down, but thrust is not negative, it's between 1000-2000kgf while diving from 4000m, not sure if I'm slowing down so massively
Yeah so the indicator stays positive now even when it's drag, so that 1000-2000kgf is drag when at 0% throttle and 100% PP.
Thank you for this video. It was very useful for me.
My pleasure!
@@AdamTheEnginerd But anyways, Bf. 109 G-14 sucks very hard in RB now.
Can you confirm they banned or removed this cuz It was really helpful when I had it
Was still working for me a week ago.
Hey Adam! I finally found the courage and self-esteem to take my piloting to the next level. How have you keybinded this? I normally don't like to use manual prop pitch, so I set a key that simultaneously cuts the throttle to 0% and sets manual prop pitch controls and a mouse button to set the prop pitch to 100%
I think I feel OKish about these controls, but just wondering what's the way you do it.
I guess that works haha. My keys aren't intuitive, I don't recommend them.

Just set up a custom match. If you click on the game mode, you have the option for a custom match at the bottom.
can you please add keyboard shorts ?! i'm a newbie and i don't the keys for doing so, also , does this works in Arcade mod ?
There are tutorials on CZcams on how to set up MEC, you should check them out. I don't think they work in AB (they wouldn't be much use in AB anyway).
thanks for your answer Adam, however i think you have the skills and editing talents to build a huge channel , you could make a series to teach newbies from zero to hero :p , or to review planes one by one (quick tut of 2 minutes) , big up for the light videos, your videos are by far more instructive with the descriptions instead of mick keep up the good work !
In arcade the pitch propeller is ALWAYS auto
Like I chins this in controls so how would I get it so that I could use the prop pitch method
See my response to your earlier comment.
Adam, would you ever have a reason to cut throttle if you’re not using MEC.. or does the game do it automatically for you when you go to zero % throttle.. say you’re in a dive or doing the maneuvers you show here... without MEC would cutting throttle be a bad choice is what I’m trying to say
It could be a bad choice if you're going to overshoot regardless, because then you'll be slower and the enemy will have an easier time following you and shooting you if you are slower. Only chop throttle if you're sure you can stay behind the enemy.
@@AdamTheEnginerd you are a legend thanks

I agree! I've got one planned!
Also the 109 has a very good rudder u can suspirse enemyes when u go vertical then suddenly use ur rudder to point down to them well at least it works for me i am using the 109 g2 variant now

@@AdamTheEnginerd Thanks!
But when I try to activate manual engine control, it said that I turned on AUTO mode and cannot be activated, how to turn it off?
I feel like irl this would absolutely destroy the engine haha
Definitely, there are tons of thrust on that prop haha.
@@AdamTheEnginerd props to you for replying on years old videos haha
@@AdamTheEnginerd that was my first thought, coming from a sim pilot. (Don't think this will fly in IL-2)
I think if you leave manual prop pitch for too long your engine starts taking damage as the prop spins too fast
Only when you leave the throttle on. If you throttle is at 0% your engine won't get damaged.
Right :)
Also, I knew that trick worked but not that well and I find it to be very useful to avoid overspeed in a dive
Yeah you can use it to dive 90° straight down no sweat, it won't let you go over 600km/h.
Can u show us how to set it?
Check DEFYN's and then my video on MEC (it's in 2 parts), they explain everything about MEC.

100% has a bigger effect.

I know I'm late but how do you not over rev your engine when you pull that maneuver?
At 0% throttle you won't overrev on Bf109s above F4 in BR.

Does turning off auto prop pitch control default the pitch at 100%? I saw you toggling it, but didn't see you adjusting it to 100%.
Default is 50%, but when you're in automatic mode you can "increase" the pitch before you go manual so that it's already at 100% when you switch to manual. Not sure if that's clear.

how do you show the stats in the black rectangle ?
It's called the "local host".
How to access the "local host":
You need to be running War Thunder or it won't work!
Option 1: on the same computer that is running WT:
-Type localhost:8111/ in the address bar and press enter and voila.

Welcome!
Does this trick still Works?
When i putted 100% prop pitch in my F-4 the engine broke, and after that i never touched the prop pitch in german planes ( the same happens in my Bv 238 )
You need to go to 0% throttle. On Bf109G and later you can use it a lot. Maybe on F4 you shouldn't use it for more than a few seconds consecutively.
When i put 100% prop pitch om my Ta 152 the engine just dies. Does the trick only work on bf109?
On Fw190s and Tas, you either burst it for 1-2s then quickly go back to automatic, or you put it at like 60% instead of 100% prop pitch. Make sure your throttle is at 0% too.
Nice content! Probably the best so far not showing off that kinda " Look at me how great I am", but instead use really effective tactics. I am just wondering what keyboard shortcuts you use for changing the prop pitch?
Hahaha thanks!
I use Shift+P to activate manual prop pitch, then shift+. to increase prop pitch.
Interesting but what is prop pich ? Cause i doesn't really see where it is, and don't understand why putting it at 100 % slow down the aircraft...
It's part of Manual Engine Controls (MEC). There are tutorials on CZcams that explain how to set it up.
I use manual control Adam514, but need to know the "effect" of prop pitch on the aircraft
Prop pitch in WT controls the RPM. In German planes if you force the RPM to the max (100%), it creates massive amounts of drag, as shown here.
Looking a little on the net, I have found that the propeller pitch changes the inclination of the blades, allowing the blades to throw more or less air backwards, in war thunder the speed of rotation of the engine (or "revolution per minute" [RPM]) is merged with the throttle. So as far as I understand the percentage represents the maximum RPM portion of the engine from 0 to 100% (and more with WEP).
For German planes prop pitch 100% is like engine brake for cars... I think ?
Yup that'd be a good analogy!
What those vectors shows

@@StarWarsMasters You shouldn't be able to go above 650 IAS with this trick.
@@AdamTheEnginerd what classes do u take lmao
@@StarWarsMasters What?
i did not know this was a thing, can only german planes do this
On German planes it is the most pronounced by far. Some other planes from other nations here and there have a respectable airbrake, but German airbrakes are many times more effective.
David G. You can do it with any plane that has a prop pitch control. Basically what it is is you’re making the propeller spin at maximum RPM while generating no thrust, so it generates a ton of drag. It’s literally the opposite of feathering your propeller.
I think it works better on German planes for the same reason that if you use 100%prop pitch while NOT on 0%throttle, you will overrev the engine, while this isn’t the case for other fighters. The German props have a much higher maximum RPM, way past the allowable RPM for the engine, while for other fighters, you cannot overrev on 100% at all. I don’t think the German planes have constant speed props.
Nearly every aircraft in 1940 had constant speed props. You wouldn't be able to vary the pitch if they weren't constant speed props.
Perhaps indeed 100% prop pitch for German aircraft is way over max RPM, though that begs the question: what's the point?
P51D30 generates about 1/3 of the drag with this same technique. It's quite useful because it does it automatically when you go to 0% throttle (when you're using MEC), and it has a decent effect.
Adam514 well if the German planes have constant speed props then it’s really confusing why they have such a high max RPM. It’s like the Germans purposely built their planes to be harder to fly for no reason. Or perhaps they intended the pilots to use your little trick :p
Constant speed props simply means that the pitch can be varied to fly at the optimum angle of attack at all times. It's a simple trick to increase performance, they certainly had constant speed props.
Indeed I have no idea why their prop pitch is different from other nations in the game. I can't think of any reason.
How do u set this control up tho
You need to setup Manual Engine Controls (MEC).
how to do you do this on consoles?
You can hook up a keyboard and mouse ;).
Apart from that, it's not worth setting up on console, but I'm sure there's a way.
+Adam514 I was actually thinking about getting a joystick to play around with. I'm on Xbox, just got the pre release and so far I'm loving it.
Why not play on PC?
Does this work on other aircraft?
Yes, but to a lesser extent. It's less risky on other aircraft too.
@@AdamTheEnginerd thanks have to try and see. Will check back on how to works or if I need more info 😉
Sounds good!
Dislike, because you complained that the 50cal spark... on the tail... where it should do no dmg...
smh
It's a fact, not a complaint that a spark happened.
