    If you ask me, Blackthorne is way more subdue in his reactions to things. Firstly, he already can speak Japanese in a full sentences rather than in single words. That indicates that he is well aware of what is happening around him by not needing to totally having Mariko to translate for him. Secondly, Blackthorne is not asking Toronaga for his ship again. In fact, he's asking for clarification of what does Crimson Sky actually will be practically, because he wants to know his role in this mission. Yet Toronaga refuses to talk about that with him, so Blackthorne, in my opinion, is still contemplating on his loyalty to Toronaga. He then sighs and tells Mariko to tell Toronaga, 'I'm ready for whatever our fate may bring', yet Mariko's translation is that Blackthorne will stand with Toronaga. Firstly, Mariko is highly protecting Blackthorne in all of these episodes, which is a show of deep love to him, while this scene also shows Blackthorne's sensitivity on the situation as he senses that there might be no Crimson Sky. Don't forget, this is before the dinner scene.
    And for the whole episode, the only time Blackthorne talks about a plan to escape is when he was with Mariko and Fuji alone in their estate. That is the time when he shows his care towards Mariko. For the rest of the episode, he was contemplating with all the others and tries to become less 'visible' as he can sense that the situation is not an advantage to him.
    Yet, we can also see that Blackthorne and Mariko are more and more comfortable with each other even in public events, as oppose to a sole relationship of subject and translator. Check out their dinner scene. It indicates that Mariko and Blackthorne are more and more alienating from the surroundings, a strictly Japanese environment.
    As for the later scene of Toronaga, Buntaro and Mariko, they are speaking in riddles. Buntaro is the first who shows his 'weaknesses' of his love to Mariko, because Toronaga forces him to spill out if he would kill Mariko as well. Mariko knows that, and she also knows that Buntaro cannot kill Blackthorne without the permission from Toronaga due to his nature of 'honour'. She knows that she has the upper-hand in this situation. However, Toronaga also knows that Mariko sets her heart to Blackthorne, thus he interrogates her on where her heart is. Of course Mariko cannot tell the truth, thus she gives the most 'respectful' answer to Toronaga and asks for death. Seriously, both of them know that this is a lie (look at Sanada's eyes right before he throws away the dagger from Anna's hands, that he knows what she is playing), and no one will die because there are stakes. As always, Mariko is protecting Blackthorne is every bit of way.
    In return, once Toronaga officially surrenders, Blackthorne’s look speaks so much that he knows Toronaga is playing. He ends up calling him out yet in a very clever way by not letting most of the people there know what he says, except one…
    He’s is as smart as Gin…

      I’m glad to finally see a comment on a reaction/review video of someone who gets it.
      Mariko’s response “My life is for my husband to take” is a defense of Blackthorne while riling up Buntaro at the same time. Upon hearing that response, his neck veins were just about ready to pop!
      And to spell it out for everyone else, mariko’s response to Toranaga is the most polite and indirect way of her saying “Blackthorne is the only one preventing me from fully drowning into sorrow and despair”. So yeah, you can imagine how much this affects Toranaga who is definitely close to defeat and should be focusing on his great uno reverse card move.

    BLOOD IS THICKER THAN WATER........Remember When Toranaga's brother caught Yuki and Omi talking 💩 about him in the Hot Springs? He said something that Stuck out to me on the second watch. He said Toranaga is still Family. Like he was reminding his Nephew he hasn't forgot that.Yuki should of picked up on what he was saying he may still be Breathing if he did. Toranaga brother wasnt even upset about his nephew talking 💩. Something about how he said that makes me believe hes not Betraying Toranaga, and Toranaga might not even know his brother is being a double agent in his favor YET. Because its odd to be betraying family then turn around and say " Me and your Dad has had our differences, but hes still Family" Implying there is no justification for what he is doing. Usually the character will go on about how he had to live in Toranaga's shadow while Tora gets all the glory,praise and respect. They almost always explain why on television. Their culture is all about Honor and what hes doing is so 🐍 like ,you would think there would be one moment of him actually showing some hint of shame in what hes doing, if he was really doing it. I didnt see any shame, in his game. I believe its because he has nothing to be ashamed about.

    Saeki gets his irreverance from Toranaga. Cuz Toranaga never has any intention of following the rules when they interfere with his own goals. He just pretends to play along. I think Jin was right. Mr. T did have something planned as a backup to surrendering to Ishido, again.

  • @khaii13
    @khaii13 Před 2 měsíci +1

    Im grasping at straws here but I feel like this episode is a total misdirect, hearkening back to the switcherooo on episode 3.
    1. why the heck was Buntaro and Mariko asking their "Last request" to Toranaga? Especially after the reveal of the last episode, it seems dissonant.
    2. Then there's the part where Blackthorne speaks rudely to the war assembly in the end but was allowed to just walk even with his titles, probably because he is a barbarian... There must be an exit strategy, as before walking out, Blackthorne names Yabushige, and Nagakado (both trained to handle the cannon regiments).
    3. Looking at everyone's expression, Mariko does not seem to surprised, or more importantly, too concerned about the outburst.
    4. And also there's the convo with Gin. If they were really about to be wiped out, why did she make those requests, unless she knows something that everyone else don't know.
    5. Also, no way Nagakado could just barge his way in into the willow-world like that. Either he was acting independently, or he acted on orders, but his or his uncle's death bought some time.
    6. Nagakado entered the willow world AFTER Gin had that interesting conversation with Toranaga, requesting for land in Edo to create what will be the Yukaku district. Coincidence? Was it Nagakado who is supposed to infiltrate? Is even this just a misdirect?
    6.1 Nobutatsu is a VIP. No way Nagakado could enter through the front gate without him being directed. And if it’s a back door, he has to have been let in.
    7. Why is it that some of the issues already addressed in the previous episode being repeated in this one? Unless they were being repeated because there are a new eyes watching?
    I’m about 75-90% convinced that the true battle we will be getting would be a blitzkrieg of Osaka castle to “Rescue Toranaga”, secure the heir, with the show ending with Toranaga Resolved to become shogun, with a post narration to the aftermath to complete the show.
    The only way to incorporate Sekigahara within the remaining episodes would be to simplify it to the only variables to turn against Ishido last minute are the catholic lords (via the Portuguese priests) and Saeki… but to remove the politics and other major players might leave a bad taste in the Japanese audience.
    I’m praying the cast and crew reprise their roles in a “new” show titled “Sekigahara”… so they are not lying that shogun is just a 10 ep series.

    • @khaii13
      @khaii13 Před 2 měsíci

      now that my head is cooled down, knowing my history, and taking into account that we still have three full episodes left, I can lay out a scenario on how Sekigahara can still be played out on screen with the setup we have so far.
      1. Ohno, the Christian lord, will largely be idle and not join the battle; maybe even turn against Ishido mid fight, coaxed along by the Portuguese missionaries who in turn had promises from Toranaga for a church in Edo.
      2. Saeki would be indecisive and in the flank. Some time into the battle, Ishido will order him to attack, but he will not. Toranaga will command Blackthorne to fire cannons on him and that will force him to act. That way, saeki will turn and attack the lepper lord, and ishido’s flank will collapse.
      And probably 3. The Noh actor samurai lord will be convinced to defect to the Toranaga side by Ochiba-sama; who I think would agree to marry Ishido on episode 8 after he defeats Toranaga, playing to his Ego to go to the open field instead of turtle up in Osaka Castle.
      So these are my two main scenarios currently
      Either A.1. A blitz job on Osaka after toranaga “surrenders”
      Or B.1. My initial layout for Sekigahara
      Any minute adjustments to these major two scenarios would have to be outlined in the numbers e.g. B.2, B.3. Etc…

      Ok ... one of your commentors changed my mind. Saeki was in on the double cross right from the start. And knucklehead Nagakado should have just stayed in bed.
      What's even funnier now is that Mr. T gets so upset with Yoshi when he reaches out to accept his own suicide pledge. Knowing all along he's not planning to surrender. Toranaga is still trying to teach is bone-headed son what to do.
