      I will tell you a little secret , it was the Anamorphic lenses, AKA 'Cinemascope' Lenses. The optics inside the lens are of a Egg shape instead of completely round. It doubles the width of a Super 35mm film frame. I have an Old Anamorphic lens from the late 1980's, check out my youtube for tests ive done with old Anamorphic lenses. Die hard 1, Alien, Bladerunner, Inception, Super8 were all shot with Anamorphic lenses and all have that MEATY cinema look.

    What I truly love about the finale is that he had to become the very evil that haunted him for days to finally stop and kill the Hitchhiker. It's as if the hitchhiker wanted him to feel his anguish and pain from lost and fear to make him stronger as a man but at the cost of his innocence and optimism in humanity. The overarching change in C. Thomas Howell's character is still a fantastic example on how to shape a character's journey from start to finish in a screenplay.

      You think he was evil when he killed the Hitcher? Genuinely curious.

    • @theprowler18
      @theprowler18 Před 5 lety +9

      @@crs290 Just saw your comment, I guess with Hauer's passing, it got me looking back on his work but here. In a way, his life and his character mirrors that of the Hitcher (alone, looking for his equal in soul and experience, and ultimately pushing the kid to truly become just as capable and merciless as him). I don't believe he became evil just from killing him but he truly had to become just as focused and ultimately as merciless as him to finally put an end to his endless destruction and death. He started idealized, hopeful, and believed in good/evil but his time with the Hitcher changed him and made him closer to who he had been afraid of, the whole film. That's what I meant by change and having to become the very evil The Hitcher was. This is a great example of a character arc done extremely well.

      Basically by subjecting his victim to constant terror he beckons forth the snap that occurred in himself so long ago. It's definitely open to interpretation but there is no disputing that he could've killed Jim in any number of ways throughout the movie. He had no issue killing anyone but in Jim's case, he chose not to. This guy could have easily taken the suicide by cop route but he didn't just want to die. He wanted to be reborn through Jim. He kept Jim alive to recreate himself. It's not just a good theory, it's the most probable one too.

      I would look at 0:28 and say that Hitcher really did see Jim a special one. The first one who even attempted to give a fight.
      That look at 0:28 kind of says "What a good welll-bred puppy you are! Soft, plush, but even now you have a potential! Those bulky buldogs cooling there behind, they pretended strong trained deadly big dogs, but they were trash. And you so soft and plushy and mostly teethless still have something in you they did not. This is excellent. One of the hardest aspects to being a filmmaker is creating suspense and a certain mood. This film nailed it with its mysticism.
    It’s a very dark film in contrast to a lot of happy films that came out in the 80’s and I suppose that’s why so many people were impacted by it.
    Very entertaining and unusual film.
    It also kind of reminds me of“Near Dark” because of the desert, and mysterious 80’s feel.

    Definitely my favorite movie ever. However I did feel like it did go on for a little longer than it needed too. When the guy showed up again at the end I wanted to scream "JESUS FUCK JUST DIE ALREADY." Maybe the writers of the movie wanted us to do that. All in all an amazing movie.

    I believe, Jim took over the mantle as the hitcher, at least that's what Rider's true intentions were. He allowed Jim to kill him, he did it with open arms and a smile. Everything was done according to Rider's plan to have Jim be his successor. That's why he told Jim, " You're a smart kid, you'll figure it out." Talking about why he was doing this to Jim. If you notice, Jim is without documents of identity, he's a vagabond because Rider stole his wallet and I.D. just as the hitcher's origins are unexplained. I believe, by Jim smoking the cigarette at the very end standing next to the police car is symbolic of Jim taking on Rider's habits, as shown through smoking by a police car, as if he's asking for a ride.

    • @mimuiao
      @mimuiao Před 5 lety +1

      The Hitcher's true intention was to die, but he didn't have the balls to do to himself what he had no problem doing to everybody else (Hauer's take on the character in a documentary). I don't think Jim took over his mantle.

    • @BeeABaw
      @BeeABaw Před rokem

      I don’t think Jim took over him as “John Ryder” but more he has gone full circle. He killed a man and now needs a ride. It’s become almost a “thank you” to help him finding himself as a good human against evil.

    My take is that John Ryder was a demon (or possessed by one) or possibly the physical incarnation of Death. His ability to kill his way out of any situation is downright supernatural. He is looking for someone innocent & impressionable, but with a spine. Ryder wants to corrupt the kid just enough so that, 20-30 years down the road, he goes berserk -- just like he did.
