On "My Car Story" we're in Suburbs of Phoenix AZ on 9-2-21.
We're looking at a 1967 Chevrolet Camaro RS SS in Marina Blue Paint. The car features the factory 396 CI V8 engine with a 4 Speed manual transmission.
The car's Owner is Gary Blythe. Gary’s had this car since 1977. He shares was looking to buy a Pontiac GTO, and he Brother shared he might want to look at this car. In 1977 he purchased this car for $800.00. After a restoration, this car looks and sounds great.
ENJOY! - Auta a dopravní prostředky
Gary brings the genuine history of an enthusiastic real-car- guy owner , racer over decades. Thanks Lou, Gary!
Hi Finn Green, Thank you for viewing & sharing, Lou
One of the better looking Chevy’s. Gotta love that trim package. The big block is just icing on the cake.
Hi John, Happy to read you enjoy the looks of this car & a big block too :-) Lou
Very enjoyable video. This sounds a lot like my story. I bought my 68 SSRS 396 Camaro in 1980 for 1700.00. I raced the old car on & off the drag strip for most of my younger years & had a ball with it. 42 years later, I still own it & it's always pretty much been my favorite car.
Hi Rarerat, Happy to read you enjoy this video :-) Glad to read you had a FUN car too. Lou
Outstanding! It was nice to see Mr. Blythe again, and I'm glad he brought his heavy right foot along this time, too! This Camaro looks great in Marina Blue & judging from the trunk treats, it has been through its paces, too. Thanks, Lou!
Hi TheGunfighter45acp, Happy to read this one is "Outstanding!" :-) Thanks for sharing the details you enjoy on this car. You're welcome, Lou
That's one loaded Camaro! I didn't realize that the 1967 had the hideaway headlights. As I have mentioned before, the 1967 debut year is the only year that had the front vent windows, and also is the lightest year they were made, just like it's cousin the Pontiac Firebird the same year. This is a beautiful example of the Camaro. I love the Munsey 4 speed transmission with the matching gearshift.
Hi Michael, Happy to read you enjoy the looks of this car :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing what you noticed, Lou
I didn’t realize the 1967 had hideaway lights either - nor did I think that they worked by sliding horizontally.
Great little tidbit.
@@JeffKing310 I owned a R.S.-S.S. 396 4 speed myself. 67's worked by electric switches that were troublesome so in 68 and 69 they were vacuum operated. If they did not work all one had to do is grab it and slide it over. Mine had the trunk fin and it was yellow with a black vinle top.
I love the history of the car when the owner has had the car for a long time and this car has a fantastic history with it's care taker!!! This one being and RS/SS checks all the boxes for sure. Those Camaros looked so cool with the hideaway headlights and I wish that feature could be used in automotive styling today. The view from the interior looking out over the hood is really special with the slight "power bulge" and grill inserts in the hood and that blue is simply beautiful on this car. Very cool Camaro!!!
Hi Hobiemarty, Happy to read you "love the history of this car" :-) Glad to read the details you enjoy with this car. Lou
Beautiful Camaro. Chevrolet got those so right. Loved the details and extra explanation of them. Thanks again Lou!
Hi Unkill Big Bad, Happy read you enjoy the looks & extra explanation on this car :-) You're welcome, Lou
Beautiful and rare car, nice to learn some interesting tidbits like the black tail panels on big block cars. Good video Lou, thanks!
Hi Gary, Happy to read you enjoy the looks of this car, and learned something too. I'm learning all the time from the Care Takers of these cars and I find that to be so much fun. You're welcome, Lou

Hi Stan, Happy to read you enjoy the looks of this car :-) Thanks for viewing and sharing, Lou
Thanks guys you made my day with this iconic Camaro. All the right boxes were checked; RS, SS, big block, blue paint, and the rear antenna is a nice touch too. Love it!
HI Bruce H., Happy to read this car made your day :-) Glad to read you "Love it!" Lou
After working at Chrysler, my dad worked at Esso as a mechanic.

Thanks Lou for the flash back.

Camaro 67..68..69... now that's how the bodystil should become...to me that is the best bodystil for them years...not to sold on the other models....I still remember the first TV appearance for the 67 Camaro ...great video...to me it's nice that people try to keep it original..
Hi Marty, Hapy to read you enjoy the design of this car :-) Lou

What a beautiful SS Camaro, it’s really great to hear the story behind this beautiful piece. My neighbors brother had the 396/375 HP version in red, it was a genuine beast! He claimed he could launch the front wheels off the ground.
Hi Michael, Happy to read you enjoy the looks & story of this car :-) Glad to read your neighbors Brother had a fun car too, Lou
Great car but I doubt the front wheels off the ground.
Guy knows his stuff!! Late 70s early 80s was the time to buy these muscle cars!!! Thanks, Lou!

This car is an original survivor. In the late 1970s gasoline was often in short supply causing many owners of similar cars to sell them in favor of newer ones with more fuel efficiency (and unfortunately less performance). Similar cars from Ford or Chrysler were often sold for a fraction of their original cost. What makes this car unique is the number of one year only items and the RS/SS combination of packages.

I'm no Warren Buffet but I'd say that for $800.00 Gary made a great investment! Thanks Lou!
Hi Brian SD, Thank you for sharing :-) You're welcome, Lou
Not until he sells it. Until then, it's costing him money to have restored it and kept it along with the insurance and tag fees. Unless he sells it, it's been nothing but an expense. Investments in the market pay dividends. Had he placed 800 in a broad index fund when he was 21 instead of buying this car and reinvested the dividends, he'd be money ahead, whereas he'll never recoup the total he put into the car in maintenance and fees if he sells it now.
Hi, Lou! Chevrolet gave an excellent response to the Mustang, and this Camaro's got everything you could want on it...RS, SS, 396, hide-away headlights with sideways-opening doors, Muncie four-speed, walnut wheel, all the gauges, and even your favorite color! Sounds awesome as Gary runs Blythely through the gears! Besides the vent windows and lack of side markers, the '67 Camaro nameplate is in block letters whereas that of the '68 is script. Little brother knew a good thing when he saw it! Family IS important!
Big shout out to you and Gary for letting us in on this amazing muscle machine!

What I enjoyed is that if it has a black back side it is a bad boy Big Block.
What a super nice guy Gary is to be able to say he has owned the same car for 40 years not many people can say that.

Happy Holidays Lou! Beautiful example of the first year Camaro. Very nice options including the color. I used to say that the '69 was the best, but this car has changed my mind. Interesting with the rear Chevrolet emblem. I never realized that. Back in 1978 people were getting decent used cars for $400 or so, so $800 was more than it sounds like today. I remember at that time when my brothers were getting their first cars, $500 was max! Times have changed for sure.
Happy Holidays Joseph! Happy to read you enjoy the looks of this car :-) Lou
GM did such a masterful job on this Camaro and its cousin, the Firebird. Marina Blue is such a classic Chevy color, available across the line. Biggest limitation in their designing the Camaro was the high cowl assembly shared with the Nova.

Lots of great details I’m in the process of getting a 67 camaro rs/ss 👍
HI Allen, Hope you're behind the wheel of the right car for you soon, Lou
Super nice car, you mentioned two 396's available, there were three, although it is not listed in the owners manual, the L-78 375 HP engine was available from about mid year on. I had a RS/SS 350 w/ Powerglide in the rare Tahoe Turquoise w/ white nose stripe. I have never seen another one just like it. The bad thing about the electric motors for the headlight doors was the pot metal gears in the mechanism, if for some reason you pushed the doors open it would strip the gears.
Hi bluestingray67, Happy to read you enjoy this "Super nice car" :-) Glad to read this car brings back memories of your car. Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou

Very very nice car... correct me if I'm wrong. Small blocks SS's came with the grill inserts on the hood and the big blocks came with the egg crate inserts. I had a ' 68 RS/SS with the 396/325 with 3.55 (because of A/C) fully optioned including front disc (late production 68) and the fold down rear seat (super rare). I'm still looking for that car. NICE Gary, i had 2 67 RS back in the 70's i am pretty sure the 67 discs were the 4 piston calipers like the Corvette. The 2nd one i owned had the 4 piston calipers and like the Corvette they leaked so i replaced with later model Nova single piston. My 2nd one i bought the body only and it had a 12 bolt the 456 gears and i found a 427/425 so it was a Yenko clone, with a 4 speed the more fun i ever had in a car. Mine had the lakewood competition bars with the J hooks that went over the axle.
Gary did the 67 have that option to spray liquid traction on the rear tires?
Hi Jim, Happy to read this car brings back memories of your cars :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
@@loucostabile A car like that being original now is worth a fortune. I was 20 years old then Lou, just turned 66 this month. I had the 2nd one during the 1975 gas shortage, fortunately i worked at a Shell station as a gas pumper then so ME getting gas was easy but for customers tough with the odd and even plates, etc. 11 to 1 compression quickly became too high in those days, those old cars were rust buckets so thank GOD for CA climate.
