You said it all there. It's all about confidence and you build confidence in something by sticking to it and not going back to what you do best. I didn't learn how to fish a jig in a day. It took me three months of fishing only a jig before I gained the confidence that I needed to always have one tied on. You'll get it just don't give up.

4 minutes in and I've got what I needed.1. Not pulling on the bait and bending the rod before letting it go...explains the constant birds nests. 2. Not changing the settings like I was. I had my drag way down and even loosened my spool tension dial...again. explains the birds nest lol. YOU ARE THE MAN!

Good demonstration and explanation! For some time I was frustrated with learning to PITCH until I figured out a "crucial" variable. That is, the bait needs to be no further back than the reel spool. Actually, it became easy when kept the lure slightly forward of the entire reel! Thanks for the good videos you post!

I know less about bass fisherman than more and I was clueless as to how to flip and pitch. Nobody else has explained the exact motion. They just say," You go like this." And make a perfect pitch. Then they do the exact same thing three times. That's useless. I love the video. Liked+subbed

I like that you cast right hand and real right hand too. That's what I do. I get people asking me all the time when they borrow a rod from me if I'm a lefty. I always say no. That's how a strong righty works! They always think I'm crazy but that's the only natural feel for me.

thank you SO much for making this video. ive been pitching alabama speed craws and berkly havoks or any other soft plastic i could get a hold of, for the better part of 7 years and like you i still have a lot of room for improvement. Every little part of pitching that makes it a whole has become habit for me and a lot of friends always ask me the general question "how do i pitch a jig". I usaually draw a blank and the only way for me to explain it to them is to just let them watch me pitch and that isnt really teaching them how to do it. there are a lot of flipping and pitching videos out there but this is by far the best thank you

Last year I decided to learn some thing new... using a bait caster and flipping and pitching was giving me fits until I watched your video. I set up targets in my backyard and started practicing I'm no where near as good as I need to be yet but I have the mechanics just need more practice.
Gene. First off you have done so much for the best sport on earth. I watched this video a day or so ago and oh my god what a difference it has made in my pitching and flipping. Was definitely doing it wrong. At the current moment I only have one baitcaster. It was rigged on a 7' heavy fenwick. Broke it loading truck for a trip. Now it's on a 6'9" Mitchell. Still works and it's a bit easier for me cause I'm a kayak fisherman

JP. If there is anything you can learn from me it's that confidence is more important than anything. If I don't have confidence in something or if something causes me to loose even the slightest bit of confidence I change to something the works for me. I fish very clear water and I don't feel that I get as many bites using braid as I do with fluoro or co-poly so that's what I use. I do have braid on my frog rod but that's it.
Gene you show me new techniques everytime I watch one of your videos and in return I teach so many people how to bass fish it's crazy considering I just started fishing 3 years ago I still continue to improve veteran Fisherman.... sorry for the lack of punctuation
I do. It was a redeye bass caught out of Craig's Creek in the Virginia mountains. I was on vacation with my family and my dad showed me how to catch hellgrammites and put them on a hook. I remember hooking the bass and dragging it up on a rock and making my dad take it off the hook. I think I was 5 or 6 years old.
Well explained Flukemaster. When I pitch I place my thumb on the spool to stop the line right before the lure hits heavy cover for it to make a "diving" entrance if I'm using texas-rig; and to break into the heavy vegetation a lot more easier. The reason for the diving entrance is to make a nice and quiet entrance.

Hey Gene thanks for the great videos. I know this ones a few years old but it helps to come back to them. Been trying to learn to pitch and this video help out big time, was moving my hand the wrong way. Any got it going now just working on my accuracy now. Also you made my son's day when yall met at Southern Moon Outfitters a few weeks ago, he couldn't wait for me to get in the door good to tell who he had met. He did some kayak tournaments with them and has now joined the Clarks Hill Youth team and loves it. This was his first year with them and he can't wait to do it again, the tournaments. Any way thanks and keep up the good work.
I'm a fan of keeping all of my reels in freespool with the magnets up high. Great for pitching and good for long casts too. Just takes practice to avoid birds nesting.
I really like my Duckett Mico Magic rods. They have been pretty solid, but there are a lot of companies who are finally making decent rods for around 100 to 125. If you spend any less than that you will find that the quality drops tremendously.

Now Gene, that looks like a typical fisherman's yard! The grass is totally neglected cause you are always out fishing! lol Great instructional video though!
The same goes for your other top water plugs. The reason we miss is because we're reacting to the bass breaking the water rather than reacting to the bass actually grabbing the lure. It's not always easy giving that small delay, especially when you're caught off guard for whatever reason. When you bank fish like I do, it's not always easy to tell when a bass is targeting it. Having line that stretches or a rod tip that's limber (fast action I believe) will help some with timely hook sets.
I'm in the middle of packing up my house and moving but I will get one out as soon as I can, and when I get settled in my new house I'm really going to start cranking them out.
I feather it every cast. I guess that's just the way I taught myself. I know Abu makes good rods at every price range but I've never used a Browning Reel. But I started with a very inexpensive set-up when I learned to cast a baitcaster and I worked just fine.

The directions are on the package. You use a pair of pliers to pinch it and open the slot. Then push the line through.

I use a jig as a the lure and a piece a piece of 4 inch PVC as my targets.
