  • I hope you enjoy an analysis. 14 Years of video games and its been nothing but a steep decline, just for reference, From 2011, to Now Fromsoftware has released Dark Souls 1, Dark Souls 2, Bloodborne, Dark Souls 3, Sekiro and Elden Ring.
Everything about the modern day Bethesda screams outdated and I'm not sure if there even capable of reaching the highs of Skyrim ever again.
Unless the engine gets completely gutted or revamped, I will remain skeptical.

Disagree that's BioWare, a company that is essentially full dead at this point. They died the villain.
Bethesda isn't dead, they've become too reliant on modders. They know that Starfield will sell well because in the future it'll be another Fallout 4/Skyrim. So they feel fine releasing an outdated design knowing modders will fix everything for free for them while they keep trying to monetize that.

I honestly don’t think the modding community will be able to fix Starfield. Many of them are walking away from the game and saying that the game’s foundation just isn’t there. Fallout 3 and Skyrim, while definitely flawed on release, had a great foundation, and that’s why they’ve lasted as long as they have. It doesn’t sound like Starfield will have that same quality.

To be fair, it's not uncommon for newer engines to retain pieces of code from old engines. Valve's most recent Source 2 Engine still retains some bits of code dating all the way back to the 1996 Quake Engine. The difference between Valve and Bethesda is that with Valve, it's just a few bits of code reused for small and mundane details, whereas Bethesda with Creation Engine 2 just copied over nearly the entirety of the old Creation engine with very little in the way of significant changes.

Honestly, my worst fear for TES6 is that it will be dumbed down to the point of no return. Imagine if instead of the unique leveling system it has had for ages, instead you just get XP for every action. Then when you level up you automatically get a plus 1 to every attribute and a perk point to spend on one of your 3 perk trees. Warrior, Mage, and Thief with starting perks being something dumb like "do 20% more damage with warrior weapons, etc. Then imagine if most of the game just becomes some empty sandbox experience where most of the actual content is added in later in the form of microtransactions. At that point my faith in Bethesda would be gone, never to return again.

Besides the game playing almost exclusively to the weaknesses of the Creation engine, Starfield also shows how Bethesda's current quest design needs a massive overhaul. We already saw the beginnings of the issues in Skyrim, with quests ranging from extremely weak (College of Winterhold) to sort of middling (Thieves guild, Daedric quests, etc). These quests all have the same issue (among others) where they exist in a little bubble. Being the master of the thieves guild and listener of the dark brotherhood has absolutely no impact on anything in the game besides the story because Bethesda has decided that one player should be able to do everything. Starfield does the exact same thing, where nearly everything that happens is made in such a way as to not block the player from any content, such as being a part of the Crimson fleet. Joining the pirates makes some companions mad at you (which can be handwaved by some incredibly easy speech skill checks) and friendly pirates, which could be a negative in most cases as you now have an entire faction of enemies which you can no longer engage for XP. Don't even get me started on the NG+ mechanic, which is probably the biggest waste of potential ever put in a Bethesda game. As it goes on you realize that the only interesting gameplay mechanics added are the ability to kind of skip some of the starting missions, some cool armour, a ship, and some funny haha moments when you roll into constellation and Sarah Morgan is a plant or something equally uninspired. I could go on but I think that Elderscrolls VI is screwed and it's not just the technical side of things. I want to be wrong but we have absolutely no reason to think it will be different from Starfield at this point.

    • @Kintabl
      @Kintabl Před 5 měsíci +29

What I don't understand, if they put the NG+ as a core gameplay, why you can do every faction and every quests in one go?
Like this Emil Pagliarulo dude who is a writer & design director in Starfield, he doesn't use game design documentation because, whatch this... is to much work for him. This is your damn job as a design director!! If you watch his speach at 'Talks from story' you see that this dude is incompetent.
When you know all this, then you know why Bethesda games have weak stories/quest design. He needs to go.
If he still be a writer & design director in TES VI, you can be sure that the game will be a major disappointment.

If your complaints are being head of all guilds and the quest lines being “weak”
Why don’t you go around this issue and make dedicated themed builds designed to only do a suitable faction.
In Skyrim all races have 1 major skill (starts 25)
      And 5 minor skills.
Limit yourself to leveling only those skills.
A 25 skill you can pile into any skill in the tree.
A 20 skill you can only go all in with 5 points in the first skill or 1 point in the first skill and chose one branch of the perk tree.
All your builds will play totally different from each other doing this.
Have strengths and weaknesses for you to play to and avoid.
Also cuts down on picking up “loot” as most of it is useless to the build.
Ore is useless to an enchanter as you can’t enchant it and smelting it into rings levels smithing which goes against the perimeters of the build
Try the thieves guild using only those major and minor skills.
You have no weapons, no alchemy, no illusion. So no invisibility.
Crank it up in difficulty as you won’t be killing but being seen WILL punish you with death.
The backgrounds in starfield are pretty awesome.
Cyber runner (lockpick, pickpocket and stealth) it’s a thief build.
No attack skills till you get manipulation.
Build it for ryujin questline. But only be loyal to the highest bidder as the synopsis says.
      Or for another version
      Go with the ronin.
You can kill, ryujin won’t like it, but remain loyal to ryujin no matter what.
Space scoundrel worked well for the freestar collective.
It how Bethesda games role-play. Here’s the defined character. You now play it.
Making your own thing from the sandbox usually ends badly and is non-sensical as a character.
File not found should be the background of that kind of character.
You’ll find it difficult to get a character more than level 20 so perk choice will matter.
This gets you using different playstyles and opens the game up to feel more in depth than one super character using the best of everything and playing for the best rewards.
There is no replayability in that playstyle as you’ll always end up with the almost exact same character every time.

    • @mindcake8811
      @mindcake8811 Před 5 měsíci +17

@@christinaedwards5084 You can absolutely choose to do all of those things of course, however you must take into consideration how having actual consequences and imagining consequences for your character are pretty different. In one scenario, it is purely up to the player's imagination to fabricate every instance of roleplay on the cardboard cut out Skyrim plotlines, or Starfield plotlines. Would it not be a far superior quest design to acknowledge the player and what they do in both positive and negative ways? What if showing up to join the crimson fleet as a Freestar ranger actually blew your cover, or made it harder to stay undercover? What if showing up to join the Dawnguard as a vampire actually mattered at all? That's the weakness of having every quest and questline in a bubble away from each other. You have to, essentially do the work the game should be doing to make it convincing. You have to pretend these story interactions happen, you will never actually be punished, rewarded, or acknowledged for your accomplishments and failures (if you can actually manage to fail a Bethesda quest). What you suggest are certainly interesting characters roleplay wise and mechanically, but such good characters deserve a world which responds to them and questlines that can be influenced in meaningful ways by their decisions. I just don't see how Bethesda's recent quest design give us that.

Ironic, the peaked at limitation; Morrowind had nowhere near the resources of Starfield (Less teammembers, smaller budget and marketing) something it had is focus, I think its the only title that everyone there creatively actually wanted to make; people just put in whatever they wanted most, no holdingback nothing matters since they thought they'd probably shutdown. It's success only led to true restriction; if experimentation made Morrowind masterful...definitions can be said to have actively harmed their other videogames.

Morrowind Combat was god awful even at the time. The biggest thing going for Morrowind was the exploration and lack of comparable games with an open world. Also the water effects were revolutionary.
And building absurdly overpowered spells. But even then the most interesting things came from mods.
At least that's how I remembered it. For me they peaked with Skyrim, nothing after that interested me anymore.

  • @knight-protectorofsadgirls8685
    @knight-protectorofsadgirls8685 Před 5 měsíci +99

10:07 I'd say Morrowind still has the best story out of all their games if for no reason other than that your character can have multiple motivations for doing the main quest. Do you truly believe you are the reincarnation of an ancient warlord and wish to fulfill Azura's prophesy? Do you take down Dagoth Ur because you're a loyal servant of the Emperor and want to stop an existential threat to its hold on Morrowind? Do you believe regardless of any prophesy or political faction that Dagoth Ur is evil and must be stopped? The game actively supports roleplaying by letting you explain your motivations to Dagoth Ur, its not just some head canon put in place by the player. The story is also a much slower burn and lets you become engrossed in the world before its revealed you are special (you aren't even born the chosen one, you are just some regular guy who has to BECOME the chosen one by completing trials and feats)
Watching Emil Pagliarulo's notorious presentation on how he approaches writing shows that he should not be allowed within 50 miles of writing major questlines. The only reason his Dark Brotherhood quest line from Oblivion was so memorable was because of all the unique ways of assassinating targets and dialogue options. Thats the exact opposite of "keep it simple, stupid"

I really dislike Emil Pagliarulo writing for quests on the games he worked on. I miss Elder Scrolls exploring lore and expanding on the nutty and esoteric things established by Michael Kirkbride. Most people will say Dark Elf is their favorite race because they are by far the most fleshed out and complex race with Morrowind. I know with Emil he will do bare minimum, do nothing of importance to the history of the Elder Scrolls Universe, and the game will end with no real consequences or impact to the world. He's the Joss Whedon of the gaming industry. As much as i want Elder Scrolls 6 to be good, with Emil at the helm, i know we'll get a very mid story as there will not be risks. Bethesda did not make “all the other Fallout games”. Out of the 11 games in the series, Bethesda made only 4 of the games.
In fact, FO1 (which is still fun) was created by Interplay, and the same developers split off on to make FO2 under the name Black Isle Studios and FO:NV under the the name Obsidian. FO:NV wasn’t lightning in a bottle-it was the perfect combination of the Fallout 3 engine with the understanding and respect for FO world building that hasn’t been seen under Bethesda.
As for my thoughts on Elder Scrolls, I don’t care what engine they use, but the “gameplay loop” matters. The first Elder Scrolls was all about closing the gap between tabletop games and video games. Capturing that freedom of choice is difficult, but it’s the best thing Elder Scrolls has going for them.

And they have forgotten that fact. Man, I used to really like the stuff they made back then. Putting Daggerfall out for free was a great showcase of how they just can't do what they used to do anymore. That ambition and desire to give space and freedom to players is being shrunk down with each passing game. Starfield is half hollow and unfinished. I have a suspicion that TESVI will launch with completely inoperable systems and bugs rendering it unplayable, considering the rate of decline they've shown over the last decade- 76 being a shining example. Watch out, they may dox all their special edition customers again like last time, or scam people with false promises and a gross rum that spills everywhere for 60 bucks again. Or bait and switch their promotional items to earn good reviews from CZcamsrs. The list goes on.

Every one of them is tied to some quest and gave a reason why Shepard would bother landing on it (Mission from hackett was the most common), there is no planet you land on that has 'nothing' on it in ME1. I took Starfield off my pc after dumping a hundred hours in it, hoping it would get more interesting. I'll see what mods might do for it later. I started playing Skyrim again, for the umpteenth time and realized why I can still enjoy it: the silly but fun lore, the great musical score, and the enjoyment of walking across vast tracts of lands that offer a harsh beauty and plenty of random encounters. For me, Starfield hasn't checked any of those boxes.
If I could change a few things about Starfield, I'd throw in a lot more variety in the procedurally generated abandoned sites scattered on every planet. As it is, they are cookie cutter boring. And other than airless moons, I'd make the planets have more varied and interesting weather. I'd make a lot of mini quests or conversational choices available inside the starships, so while traveling, the ships offer something more engaging to do. And the "romance," either cut it out entirely or take a page out of games that have done it better, such as Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077. I could go on, but I've only scratched the surface of why I think SF is dull.

  • @ImmortalKyle
    @ImmortalKyle Před 5 měsíci +21

I think the real issue with Starfield is it is just too big. If they had made the game smaller, maybe 15 systems and 25 planets with like 7 or 8 of those planets or moons having lots of unique, handcrafted detail on them, Starfield would have been reviewed much better. The content of Starfield is spread far too thin for such a big galaxy and the need for so many loading screens to close the long distances completely ruins immersion for players. The size of the game also makes the random procedural content even more randomized. Some locations, events or encounters either appear over and over all the time or they have never popped up for me, even after hundreds of hours of playing. I've seen them in videos and heard things from other people so I know they exist but have still yet to run into some of these encounters or locations because the game is too big and I usually fast travel directly to where I need to go, so it kind of limits how much time I spend flying in my ship.
The game is too big and if Bethesda tries to stuff all of Tamriel into Elders Scrolls 6 with this BS procedural content crap everywhere then Elder Scrolls 6 is going to get mixed reactions just like Starfield. I'm not buying ES6 or preordering it until I see it after it launches. These video games companies are too untrustyworthy nowadays. Also, do not buy Early Access for any game at all. It is a scam and the developers are using it to trick consumers into spending money they don't need to spend.

    • @Lightsign01

I think that Starfield's issue is it's a fundamentally-flawed game; I use that term to reference when you play something and the only thing that excuses it's problems is the same thing caused all of them (There's no rushed-release or limited-budget, no external issues) I think the scale only exhausts the problems it has, I think these problems still exist but aren't as prominent. Starfield really highlights the worst parts of their titles in its size, while underrepresenting the best and I think you're right; it is that it's too large, it's size is much more empty than their prior titles; not much handcrafting, its too open/procedurally-genrated to have detail but anyway, Starfield is trash in my opinion.

DD2 is exactly what I’ve been wanting Skyrim 6 to be so, and I didn’t even know it was coming out till a month ago…so safe to say my hunger for that sort of game will be filled…
And I really do think the Dragons Dogma team has something they can build on and make a huge gaming franchise out of…something Bethesda has struggled to do for years…

I could see why someone would think that, it is pretty repetitive…
I think them making it to where you can’t go in the water and cross that way was a huge mistake, as well as no stealth mechanics…
And more looting line Skyrim would have been ideal, with classical pieces of gear and clothing that can be found everywhere and on people when they die…
Little things like this fill the game up, the missions and side quests also seem to be quite small and people keep saying the map is massive, which it is, but you can only explore about 40 percent of it.
So not as big as it looks, it’s an illusion tactic.
However, the animations, character creator, combat, mechanics in general is the best I’ve ever seen.
You can even control how they walk and run and it can dramatically effect gameplay and the characters flexibility. If they are heavy on upper body, but light on lower body you will feel top side heavy, if your character is heavy all around you will feel that, the taller they are you will feel that, the slimmer they are the lighter you will feel, all of this can effect strength and how well you can lift your opponents off the ground, your force with attacks, how quickly you attack….the physics are next level.
So hopefully their next game will be more extensive.
The director said the next one is when he believes he will be able to make the game exactly how he likes and in one of his specific inspirations was Skyrim, so I think it will be a more extensive open world like that and like most open world rpg games today…
He was talking about them like the first iteration and this one were test dummies of sorts to get to where he wants to be to make his real true image of the game…

So they probably cut survival mechanics out. The capital ended up empty with worse AI and faces than their previous games. They wanted to make companions like in DragonAge and made them bland by accident. They had no time to fill the 1600 planets so they pushed a ton of grind-quests and copy-paste locations to the game.
A new IP is hard, because the game hasn’t established an identity. They probably encountered some technical issues late in development.

Morrowind has a genuinely good story, a surprising amount of content, impeccable art direction, and much more. When I look at all the games after I just have to ask where did all of that go?
Dagoth Ur is a good example, I am sure any elder scrolls fan would have seen the countless Dagoth Ur memes even years ago. That's because Dagoth Ur in Morrowind was a well written villain in my opinion and left a memorable impact on the players of the game. Despite having very few actual voiced lines those few voiced lines are very memorable and embodies who Dagoth Ur is. You rarely ever hear people referencing or meming on Mankar Camoran or Alduin because they did not have the good writing, voice acting, or art direction to make them as memorable as Dagoth Ur.

I'll point out that Skyrim wasn't excused when it came out. A ton of people very heavily criticized it, mainly older fans who saw how Oblivion had slipped in some ways from Morrowind. It was very heavily critiqued at the time, but it was also a game that was played by a lot of young people who had no criticisms or anything they liked, and could mod away any issues they had. Basically, Bethesda games have always been mediocre but large and moddable enough that people plating them religiously consistently ignore all their issues, while people who have contention play something else. It's just that Skyrim took too long to get a direct sequel and its core base of supporters got too old to finally not notice all the issues the series has always had.

Btw. I think when you start developing a game, you use a version of an engine and you have to stick by that version. So when they started developing starfield they couldn’t have further advancements. In the meantime the hired a team which focuses just on the engine. So during the development of starfield the engine could have made a huge jump. TES6 will obviously take advantage of further advancements

I agree 100%. The creation engine 2 is such a garbage engine, and it's one of the things that killed Starfield. It can hopefully get reworked and tuned in time for TES6 But my optimism meter is close to 0.

However more detailed doesn’t mean it looks better. They clearly cut many things out of starfield and didn’t finish many things. It is obvious that at some point they rushed some aspects and couldn’t make them as good. For example they copy pasted npcs and their dead faces. Also the many generic quests. It could have made a huge jump between Oblivion and Fo3. Yeah, it could have.
It could have made a giant leap between Fo3 and Skyrim. It was possible, it could have.
It could have made a massive jump between Skyrim and Fo4. It could have.

It could have been a whole new engine between Fo76 and Starfield. Yes, it could have.

One of which is their ability to tell a story. I'm fairly certain they have a lot of talent behind that aspect. And I wouldn't say the story and theme of the Dragonborn is bad in any way, just that perhaps the questline could have been more comprehensive and immersive.
I think one of the big problems is their relationship with feedback after release.
Usually, games are given many new specific features; but because the modding community is so active and comprehensive, they are mostly being incentivized to make secondary aspects "good enough" and let mods solve the more wide issue of the cumulative incompleteness left behind.
Regardless, it will be interesting to see if they are even able to compare with some of the big mods out there.

It also doesn’t help Bethesda’s fan base for years basically allowed this state to happen by not finding it an issue that Bethesda games need mods just to even run well without problematic bugs. If this was any other developer they would be lambasted.

They should know that they deserve more than this. An artist should improve on and perfect their works and skills, but Starfield to me really has the vibe of just trying to cash in a paycheck at the end of the workweek. And all their fans were conned out of a stellar experience Todd hyped everyone for and are left coping, convinced the game isn't as bad as it is. Bethesda can't do wrong!

Your general premise is absolutely correct, and TESVI is absolutely on the trajectory for being just as bad as starfield if they don't change course. But your perception of the reasons is a little narrow. The problem isn't that BGS has refused to change their formula, it's actually the opposite. BGS has been steadily altering their formula for over two decades, with starfield clearly being the direction they were moving. Skyrim isn't their best game, bar none. It's the game that is bland enough to draw a huge audience while still being forgivable enough to not be bad. Daggerfall or Morrowind hold the title for the best game BGS has ever made, and Morrowind is proof that they were once able to write amazing stories and quests. Skyrim isn't the beginning of this decline, it's the tipping point in the middle. And its precisely because BGS has been steadily changing it's formula from complex but fun genuine RPGs to shallow and bland action games. Not because they refuse to change but because they continue to stray from what made them great.

I keep seeing this type of comment more and more as time went on and as the hype died down, people realized that this game wasn't as good/great as advertised by Bethesda and big time critics. Sounds like Fallout 4 all over again. I am glad I didn't buy this day 1, after being disappointed with FO4 I waited a couple of months for more Starfield reviews to come out and sure enough my gut was right (sadly). I have been reading that some of the modding community really don't want to mod Starfield because of the engine or that some of them find the game lackluster/boring and don't want to put the time into modding it at all.
That is a shame because this game really needs modders to bring some life to it, they did wonders for FO4 (Fun game when modded a certain way on PC). I personally think that Todd and the Bethesda teams have lost their passion in making immersive games. I have some worry that the Elder Scrolls VI will be the same as Starfield and FO4. I hope not, but the last 3 games they made gives me no reason to believe that they will change.

@@Sumoniggro FNV is great in writing and story. There is a lot of cut content in FO4 that is epic and mods have brought them out. DLC size mods also make the game epic. "The Machine and Her", Heather Casidan", and "IVY 6.x" FO4 was released incomplete and broken, but provided a great base to build on. All the errors, bugs, and needed patches are corrected by mods. My question is why does Bethesda start off good but ultimately release an incomplete and broken game? The time spent, the staff provided, and the budget allotted should by far have yielded a much better and playable game experience. The DLC's were still weak and needed moving to correct shortfalls and again had cut content that needed moving to bring into the game. I mod the hell out of FNV and FO4 to make them into a game I love to play. Most mods I create myself and use myself. Bethesda has so far abandoned moding in Starfield due to the game engine mechanics and if they do not put out an editor to help more to create seamless mods as in all previous games, they will lose their base. For the time it took to put the game out, it was released broken and a disappointment. Just my opinion. :)

Loving or hating Fo4 comes down to one very simple question: How do you like them settlements tho? Because that's the only viable content the game has.
If i were to make a piechart of game content in Fo4, it's not going to look like any other Bethesda game before it. It will have only 3 slices.
A huge slice that takes up almost half the pie call "Main quest", another huge slice that takes up more than half the pie called "Settlements", and then a tiny sliver of a slice that we can name "Other", which is going to include all the game's side quests.
The "Main quest" slice is of course moldy and rotten as ever, nobody wants to eat that, so that's a complete waste.
The "Other" slice is so tiny, and parts of it has mold on it and just isen't very good, so that's not a filling meal for anybody either.
Leaving us just with "Settlements", and it's associated gameplay loop as the only edible meal here.
So that's what it all stands or falls with. Do you like them there settlements?
Personally i do not, that's just not my idea of a fun time. And because i do not find settlements fun, there's nothing left. Only the MQ, but i'd rather stab myself in the gut than play that.
All the side-content i would normally have played in a Bethesda title just isen't there in Fo4. It was either gobbled up by the MQ, or it was done away with so you'd have lots of empty space to build settlements on. Leaving nothing left that i'd want to play, and modding the game is not going to change that fact.
If you love settlement building, then maybe you can have a lot of fun with this game. But you really can't if you don't.
Also, i hate both Nate and Nora, the two people we are forced to play as.. so that doesen't help either.

I mean the loading screens in skyrim were kind of a pacing thing for me that made me settle in the world, like "prepare yourself" or dims my mind before breathing the world (the shouts connected to that for me). Starfield seems to be a massive space that's segmented with loading screens that kills the point of the space. It's like you could go anywhere but its all chopped up. If the engine was more advanced the loading screens would be less of an issue and space fighting and docking wouldn't be the only thing you could do in space. It's like there's things to do here and there to allocate focus to areas but the loading screens made all of that focus into an experience that denies you to be in the game as a whole which is what they promised but its outer space not a hallway, which once again gives focus but we were promised immersion and they failed at that

From Skyrim the world and graphics just became more and more stale, grey, and barren, which takes us to Starfield, which, I have to be honest, the procedural generation did absolutely NOTHING to remedy the problem, and may have even helped it to stand out more in a very bad way

Oblivion is basically playable vanilla but there are lots of mods to help with issues. Morrowind feels slow and ugly but was top tier graphics when it came out. It has lots of mods too. Daggerfall was released open source by Bethesda so there are free engines that run it clean on modern systems and allow mods. I'm not sure how I would play Arena today.
Morrowind and Daggerfall have my favorite plot and stories. Oblivion's main quest is serviceable but skippable but all its other quests are great.

Fallout 4 isn't a bad game, it just isn't a Fallout game. I often called Fallout 4 Mass Effect Meets Far Cry. It didn't feel like any Fallout game. The gutting and removal of the skill system, having no real choices whatsoever in the game, no stat based outcomes in combat... it was lets say just bad at being a Fallout game, even when compared to Fallout 3 and NV. Fallout 3 and New Vegas having 15 Gun Skill literally made you unable to hit anything beyond like 10-20 yards, meanwhile in Fallout 4 you can snipe with a 10mm Pistol at 500 yards at a guy in a toward who is smaller than the tip of the gunsight. Fallout 4 was just terrible in so many ways. Nothing you did really mattered, your skills/perks didn't really matter much either as long as you focused on perks that increased damage/unlocked upgrades, nothing else really mattered. Game was about as Hollowed out as a Tree with Termites.
When it comes to Skyrim, Skyrim was at it's best before Bethesda added any DLC. Bethesda like in Fallout 3 proved it didn't know how to implement DLC without being insanely intrusive. Fallout 4 continued this with how it handled the Automatron DLC for example. Skyrim Dawnguard an Dragonborn was Insanely intrusive to the already existing world to a point that they destroyed a lot of base game assets, wiping out the Vigil of Stendar, completely changing how vampires worked in the base game, changing entire hideouts in the world etc etc. Lets not forget the random attacks on towns/villages which would kill important NPCs. How Bethesda implement DLC in Skyrim was terrible. I found every single DLC for Skyrim was a HUGE disappointment. To a point that if mods didn't often require them, I would disable every single DLC including Hearthfire. Heck I generally do with getting delaying mods and Just never activate Dawnguard or Dragonborn content. Base Game was so much nicer without those DLCs.
When Bethesda said they needed to focus more on RPG elements in their games. I foolishly believed them. When Fallout 76 was first announced I thought it was going to be Fallout 4.5 ie a Fallout 4 done right. When they announced it later in that week or month or however long it was between the first trailer and the first interviews... My heart shattered. I've not touched or bought a Bethesda game since. I don't think I ever will.
Their recent actions with Skyrim has convinced me to uninstall Skyrim SE and Fallout 4. I'm happy enough with Fallout 3/NV and Old Skyrim. Bethesda, all I can say about them anymore is that I will forever flip them the bird. They don't know how to make a video game. Not anymore.

I find it so funny that people now realize the problems of the bethesda formular that the critics of Bethesda games have pointed out since at least skyrim. I understand that an RPG with the focus on exploration is an exciting concept and I have to admit it, Bethesda nailed the atmosphere in skyrim, so I understand the fans. But in a game where you fight so much, is boring enemy AI and combat not a dealbreaker? And in a game where you talk so much is boring writing and missing choice and consequences (RPG mechaincs) not also a dealbreaker? Yes it is!!!
And now people seem to care that the dungeons are repetetive. Haven't they been repetetive and boring since Oblivion? Yes they were (at least for the most part), and this in a game where the gameplay loop forces you to dungeon crawl. And don't let me start talking about charackter progression. Bethesda games are Action-RPG open world dungeon crawlers with bad action, bad/non existent RPG mechanics and boring dungeon crawling. The only thing bethesda ever nailed was the beautiful, immersive and detailed overworlds they created. Besides that they failed in every gameplay aspect they touched. That Bethesda fans now critize Starfield with the same arguments we Bethesda-cricitcs critized skyrim and Fallout 4 feels so good. Maybe after Starfield some of them go back to skyrim/Fallout 4 and realize that these games already had nearly all of those problems. And then go play Fallout:NV and realize that Bethesda games could be so much better. I allways said that if another company makes an open-world exploration RPG and they put a little bit of effort and care into into it, it is game over for Bethesda

I think one of the biggest issues I see regarding Bethesda games is that there is absolutely no innovation. Looking past the surface level to core mechanics and game deisgn, every single game since Skyrim has been the exact same product. It may look different, but Terrormorphs in Starfield are the exact same thing as Deathclaws in Fallout 4. Vertibirds in Fallout 4 use the exact same code as Dragons in Skyrim. The UI is resized and placed somewhere else but from a coding perspective it is the exact same thing. Hell, Terrorbeasts in 76 are identical to dragons in every way. INCLUDING the same bugs that have been in Skyrim since 2011. Because they just copy and paste code again and again. And as the games become more complex and demanding, the engine begins to fail, the bugs get worse and more obvious and you see just how broken the system is. And the sad thing is, so much code has been borrowed, that fixing it just breaks other bugs that are dependent on previously imported code.
I would be willing to bet money that TESVI is going to have many of the same mechanical bugs Starfield has. And the most innovating thing about TESVI, if there is any innovation at all, will be that they try to combine Deathclaw and Dragon mechanics into a new monster, but because the two use such ancient and buggy code it will be completely broken.

i think you forget quite a few essential points in your analysis. Its not necessarily the engine thats principally holding back bethesda. It*s not the "outdated" core game idea you mentioned either. They may play a part, but a minor one IMO. And to say, Bethesda didnt try anything new with starfield is objectively (a word you seem to use quite often although most things you mention arent objective) is wrong, too. They took a risk by expanding the open world to a whole star cluster by employing a technology they have not used to this extent before - procedurally generating a huge number of worldspaces adorned with hand-crafted POI that get loaded into these worlds randomly. It is safe to say they failed to offer interesting explorable content using this approach. But here's the point: By doing this they deviated from their (actually fun) core gameplay loop from their tradition, and that includes tha past 15 years. BTS games are about exploring an open world and finding interesting, meaningful, useful, funny or beautiful shit while carving your own way through a vivid world. So Starfields problem is not that BTS core game idea is outdated, the problem is that BTS deviated from their traditional formula. THIS is why the community forgave skyrim's flaws: They absolutely nailed portraying a beautiful, vivid and interesting open world sandbox, in such a way that bugs, outdated graphics and non-enganging storytelling + bad writing did not hurt the player too much. Its not the time of release and limited technological capabilites, as you said, and thats a superficial observation IMO. Another point you completely missed out on skyrim is of course the modding community. Its the largest modding community in the world and Skyrim would not be the classic it is today if ít werent for these guys and gals. They 1. fixed most of the games bugs, 2. mitigated a whole lot of technical incapabilites and restrictions (ground breaking stuff) to bring the game up to current gen technological standards, and 3. create a never ending amount of free content for this 13 year old game UP TO TODAY.
Concerning Creation engine 2: If you look at wehat creation engine 1 is capabale of in terms of graphics, character models and animations with the right mods installed for skyrim, i think its safe to say that creation engine 2 would be completely sufficient to build a decent current gen game on. This time its BTS' reluctance to seriously integrate modders works for whatever reason. The essential problem starfield has is not its graphic after all. The game got too big (poor game design choice, I agree with you here) with not enough meaningful content, too much repition and too much empty space.
I'm not defending BTS here, not at all. They doubled down on an obviously flawed idea (relying primarily on procedural generated content) and achieved the expectable outcome with it. A mediocre game at best, and its a shame. I wish BTS would have held to their traditions more and would not have fallen for the bigger = better dichotomy. We can only hope they learn from this, but I seriously doubt it. The only hope I have for starfield is, that modders once again pull the cart ouf the dirt. Same goes for TESVI in principal, though it really is too early to speculate about this game. We wont see it before 2030 probably.
Last but not least: TLOU2 was "objectively" a really really good game.

I agree with about 95% of your comments, and I am also very concerned for elder scrolls six. I think the worst part is that given Bethesda development timetables for previous titles. They’re probably so far down the road with ES6 that there’s no way anything can be changed, and I think you can bet dollars to donuts that we’re going to get a Starfield-like sheetshow wearing a trash bag that says ‘ES6’ on it. The only good news I see out of this entire debacle is that because this was an Xbox exclusive, I was unable to buy it as a PlayStation owner and for that I am eternally grateful because I would’ve went and plopped down $100 for the deluxe version like everybody else expecting Skyrim in space, and I would’ve been extremely upset to have paid money for the game that was delivered. So I would like to thank you, Todd and Phil, for saving Sony owners the hassle of having to play this joke of a game.

With Todd Howard still the public face I would not believe anything the Man says, he’s like the shadiest car dealer.

My man Alteration is my main skill tree as a mage. Ofcourse destruction is a strong second, but I always 100% alteration for my build, and with one of the most common magic mods, its even better. 😂😂

I don't think there is a developer that can deliver the next TES. It has been almost 15 years. It has to be mind blowing.
