So I found myself around Indy, not really planning to record anything, but decided to give it a try. With heavy rain around, I positioned an audio recorder near this Custer siren and waited. I didn’t even get my cameras out until later. I was 90% certain it wasn’t going to get tested but suddenly, at Noon, the siren came alive.
This 400W unit was installed in 2011, while Rushville's units, based on the Code 3 Vcon siren, date back to the 90s. This one is higher pitched and it almost sounds like it's connected to an array of different siren “controllers” run in tandem. Over time, the hi-lo signal goes out of sync, and the unit is slightly out of tune, which surprisingly creates a great effect reminiscent of European sirens. It's fairly loud, surpassing the ES-2/4000s I've attempted. For a cheap, off the shelf alternative, these provide a great value to towns that may not have the funds for an outdoor warning system. I hope to see more of these pop up.
In Rush County, the sirens are tested on Fridays at Noon, except in freezing weather.
Enjoy, and as always comment, like, and subscribe for more. Thanks!

This...officially out-creeps the chicago storm sirens
imagine hearing this during a tornado warning (hell no)
*plays*
@cynthiacosta9195 what a bold claim! I've heard hi lo being used for tornadoes, even airhorn. People can use any tone they want for any purpose they want. They can use hi lo for a draw bridge if they wanted.
Finally someone recorded this one! Chilling! Sounds like two sirens going at one.
technically it is. there’s more than one speaker. 😂
also it’s terrifying!
@@IHeartAGM More than one speaker ≠ more than one siren
Interesting custer siren. Love it!
Quite the setup there. Great video!
Very interesting siren. Great vid!
These are wild!!! Great video!!!
Glad to see another video of these. They’re each very weird in sound and appearance so it’s always a good thing to see different ones functioning.
Yeah they’re so quirky, but they’re pretty neat at the same time
Wow amazing siren
Very cool of this siren.
Sounds like a high pitched Digital ESC-864 doing hi lo
Sounds like my alarm system which goes off randomly every night.
your house is haunted
Awesome. I passed by this one back in may.
omg ksosmleg aca4004
I like it
Nice, i wonder why lots of them are set to High Low
The controllers are fire truck sirens so setting it to a siren tone would probably create confusion
The audio is better than the original custer
Sounds good. That hi lo sound is like a german police car.
Custer electric siren are back ladies and gentlemen
Can someone explain to me what this? Like did the city make this? Or is it ordered from somewhere or did someone make it in their backyard?
Custer Electric made it. These are slightly common around northern Indiana
Like Rushville and that other place I forgot
Don't these things only run Hi-Lo? No alert and no wail?
@@Sir_Miles_Riley they run only hilo as their sound generation is a police siren. there was one custer installed set to steady tone, but it sounded too much like an actual police car so they changed it out to hilo.
@@auggatronicRoblox_officialohh
so they only do hi-los for warnings, interesting..
Almost like a FS DSA, amazing.
Yeah but spread out
Yo you think you can come to Fort Worth Texas one day? Because the outdoor warning system is some whelen vortex r4
This sounds like an alert for a biohazard, not something weather related lol. That being said, it definitely grabs attention in a way other sirens can't. Hopefully it's cheap enough for small towns to install.
Copyrighted ATI looking thing. Otherwise, nice video!
About as bad as Ati
Sorry my mistake then.
ATI is late to the party with speakers on a pole lol. Whelen was one of the first to do that.
do all custers use alert and hi-lo...?
Not all but there are some videos of some doing alert!
ambulance siren!
Kinda funny sounding tbh lol
Is this the new speaker array?
No custer electric made it
Smh
Dsrx100 can you please come to the Addison IL t 128 near Ardmore elementary
That just sounds creepy ngl
Can't help but notice the (probably) dead. 2009 Toyota Prius in the lawn
Yo What The Hell!! What is this?
It's not a Custer electric siren instead it's a Whelen WS-2016

they ain’t synchronized, bruh. that’s scary! 😂
HELL NO
Oh the voice is so weird
You’re that can’t be good for your ears
