In this building a fort in the woods video, I waterproof the fort roof, adding tarps and plastic, I am almost done enclosing the fort in the woods.
I address the comments saying my fireplace will have issues, I frame out and build a window to the fort, and give an update, and video on Tripper.
I hope you all enjoy!

These sponsorships and adds are the way I have been able to constantly put out long videos over the past 10 or so years.
I appreciate all of the support.
I will never ask my subscribers to do anything they don't want to do.
Thanks for watching!
See you in a week.
briliant ! i have started watching you since you built the og fort really good content ! keep it up
Hey man I love the videos! Your videos are my enjoyment right now through life I wish you the best
Joe thank you for the information but I take after my dad and at 60 he still had his natural hair color. At 61 he got cancer and because of the treatment he lost his hair and it came back still full but grey. I know the natural cure for cancer so I know I won't get cancer.
Joe I'm not sure if you're gonna read this, but for the door you could make a hole on the bottom log and the top and then fashion a door to a something like this: |III (have a longer piece of wood to act as a hinge) and then just insert the longer piece into the holes. That way you could just open and close it.
English is my second language, so hopefully you can understand what I'm saying.
Everyone thinks they are an expert Joe lol. You have proven yourself long ago and the internet is full of people who will find a reason to knock your work. Keep it up! Love the content and thank you for sharing your experiences!
Would love to see an overnight at the fort during a snow storm.

That probably wouldn’t be fun for him

Yooo same
Hmmm No hiss.....
I would so watch a MRE bushcraft crossover video.....just saying Joe, just saying 🤷
Who ever said that guys will eventually grow out of their building tree forts stage in life? I say they just get better and better the older you get.
Yes
Girls too 😊
I built my first bush craft fort in grade school and it held up for years.
only if you do it right...or outrageously wrong.
@@grumpyoldfart3891 that’s the only way to truly learn and get better. Kids fall off their bikes the first few times riding but starting with it they only get better. It’s the same with any skill. You’ll never become good if you’re afraid to fail.
Next: overnighter at the fort with beer and steak. And Doug!
Please bring Doug
@Joseph Edwards It´s been a while since he had a beer in his videos, maybe his belly can´t take it anymore?
@Joseph Edwards Alcohol is a constant source of enjoyment.
Yaaaaas mehr Doug!
Next episode should be chinking and clearing the surrounding cabin area of dead trees and branches so it's easier to shovel when it snows. Bring another "window" tarp to cover the inside of the ladder/door but leave the outside uncovered so you can still use it as a ladder. Besides that you could always stock up on firewood, bring some good food and maybe some whisky!
I always hear you mention the type of wood that you’re using. Is there any chance you could devote a portion of a video on how you identify and differentiate the various trees in the woods? Thanks for great videos Joe! I just discovered your videos a couple of months ago, and I now go camping with you almost every night! 😂
yeah that's a good idea. l love stuff like that ,proper ray mears.
Great comment!!
i like when he presses his mouth/nose to the wood and comments on it
at lot of it is experience. for one, wood all have unique smells. If you ever get the chance to smoke your own bbq youll start to identify that by smell alone, not just from burning wood, but even the dry or wet wood have a smell. Color is another factor in this, but to a lesser degree
There are great field guides that can help you identify tree types on the area you live by both leaf and or by branch/ bark appearance. Very easy to use and very accurate, good fun for a hike.
Really like the way the rocks were addressed. Nice and respectful, still acknowledging the concern but defending your work. Need more respectful and knowledgeable people like you. Nice work, keep up the great videos!
Wrap the tarp around the log the other way, then the snow will have nowhere to accumulate. Just an idea.
Great observation. If the snow blows as bad as I expect, snow weight accumulation against the tarp could just rip it down looking at the way it is currently configured at 36:05.
- Wrapping the tarp around the log by going toward the outside will help shed more snow away from the fort and cause it to fill in the gap temporarily under the threshold log to help seal out some drafts.
You can still drop the tarp from the top when you need more light for filming later on down the road. This is bringing out the kid in all of us when we used to go into "full scrounge mode" when building our own hidden places when growing up. -- Thanks Joe!
My thoughts. DIDDO
Yup 100% wrapped that way( under rather than over) it's just a bowl for snow/ water to collect in
Yes I just said the same
I was going to say the very same thing. Wrap it over the log so any snow build up will slide off the tarp and on to the ground. :-)
Having the tarp wrapped underneath the logs may create a water collection area between the log and the tarp. Unless it is sloped and will run down one end. But visually it looks better than running the tarp over the logs. The fort is looking amazing and cozy!
Well what you are saying is true but there is a roof above the tarp so water and snow couldn't really go between there that much
@@shacothedemonjester5821 but wind blow snow or freezing rain could there and it will be pain in azz to get free for his snow wall lol
What you think logging the outside half way of the pallet n using it for storage n onging half inside off pallet to u .ca access ur roof for a balcony or somthing
I'd like to hear ur in put on it.
The inner half holld tools or ur stuuff
Hey Joe, so I have been watching ya for the past couple of years with my wife and kids. We love watchin ya out there building different shelters, and we love the fort series. I was just given a stage 4 cancer diagnosis, and will more than likely never get the chance to do the things I did growing up in the back woods of Mississippi, instead I am here in Oregon were its always wet. So thank you for your videos, they allow me to show my kids just what one could/can do out in the woods with next to nothing.
Praying for your recovery 🙏🏼
I'm grateful for people like Joe that give us homey entertainment. I can't do what he's doing either, though not for the same exact reason. Anyway, I'm glad you have this to make you comfortable and your kids. They'll be watching Joe for years to come and will be thinking lovely thoughts of Dad as they do.
Stay strong. Joe is the second best person to teach your kids about this stuff, after you of course. I wish you a speedy recovery.
I am saying a prayer for healing for you Jeral..Through God, anything is possible my brother
Dammm wow
I wish you a speedy recovery 🙏🏽
I'll tell you what Joe. If the Health & Safety team were getting anxious about your fire pit rocks, you using an old plot as a ladder, to allow you to walk on your roof, will send them into a catatonic state! ;) It's been really interesting to see you efforts take shape and grow. Big respect and well done! Thank you for your stuff.
LOL 😂😂😅
Like the progress you made Joe. Now it just needs to be tested against the elements.💯😀❤️👍🏾✝️🙏🏾🇺🇸
I've got a little fort and fire pit in my backyard. Watching your videos inspired me to build it. All the rocks I used for my fire pit is out of the creek. They are also limestone. Some of them have cracked in half but I've never had them explode. Thanks Joe for giving me an outlet to find piece. This has been a very hard year. I lost my father in July and being able to watch these videos gave me ideas. Now if I'm having a bad day, I'll go out and chill in my fort by the fire!

I’m loving the fort, but I need that window plastic pulled tight just for my OCD 🤪. I would love for you to do an overnight there and it would be cool if Doug could pop in too.
I was in pain when he didn’t pull it taught ha ha!
oh god...now its getting to me tooooooo LOL
My OCD would be all in aesthetics. I'd have split logs for the window frame rather than the wood boards.. glad he fixed that tarp cuz that gap wouldve driven me nuts...but then again Idk if I'm capable of making it all anyway so cant complain or judge.
N boosh too!!
@@samanthad5876 Yay for the Boosh! :) ... and the rest of the team ! Go Team, Go Sports! ;)
I know it's late for a comment, but Joe, you are so strong. It's cool to watch you bring the big log back to your fort.
Id love to see an overnight camp at the fort with some bushcraft upgrades and sprucing the place up a bit! Love the vids man keep up the great work.

A header beam across the tarp opening would give you a straight line to make it uniform. I'm cheering you on! When we were kids in Massachusetts, we built a 3 story tree house with a pulley lift system, running water and a toilet! This video brings back so many fun memories! Thanks.
Keep up the good work Joe. I'm sitting at home recovering from surgery going through all your vids AGAIN lol. It helps pass the time and is giving me so many ideas for summer and camping. :)
Do an overnight from the fort, but answer some questions about what you’ve learned from doing the last “fort” that you took down before you moved..
I would roll the tarp the other way around the log for two reasons. Water could build up in the pocket created between the tarp and the log. And Maybe the log can be used for some future construction inside?
Maybe you have future plans for the way it is now. But we all know what wet tarp smells like!
Couldn't agree more, you don't want that tarp trapping anything, keep the snow / water out.
Also when the snow comes the tarp will be trapped, without having to dig it out won't it?
Was about to post a similar comment. Also, water pooling up in the tarp would rot the log.
It would also be a breeding ground for mosquitoes in the summer.
Good point
I’m sure you have already thought of this but each time you’re there cut some firewood and store it under a tarp or in the fort so that when you get there you don’t have to cut wood before you can eat I like the fort and someone else commented that if you put tree frames around the window it would look better might as well make it cute
Great idea!! And he could do that so when he woke up he would have wood.
😉
That was a lot of work. I like that it’s different and reuses materials. This is something folks could attempt, albeit on a smaller scale😷🏴😷
In two years I’m convinced this will just evolve into a full blown tiny home
When i was watching this video i was just thinking "if the wife is ever mad at him and kicks him out of the house for the night, he can just sleep at the fort"

I have no idea why I get so excited when I see you throw a video up, but I do. Thank you for so many hours of awesome viewing.
Well Joe, as you look back on yesterday, may your past memories be remembered. As you celebrate the new year, may your heart be filled with endless happiness and joy as you look ahead to the future. May in the days ahead in 2021, I hope no matter where your friends or family may be, that your life is filled with the warmth of not only the sun but from those you cherish each day close and afar. May you have an awesome and wonderful New Year.
I really like the fact that you made a comment on negative comments, and reminded of the dangers. The rock-talk was point on, and called for. Water absorbed into pourous silica or clay, when heated can build up pressure and explode. Such things are good to know, and keep in mind. There is often educational value in the stuff that people are obsessed about.
Did anyone else catch the "The A Team" reference?? Lol im getting old..
The A-Team reference immediately proceeded a Fancy Nancy reference. It was definitely Joe trying to earn his man card back.
Old
Pretty sure there was a Happy Gilmore reference too.
Ha ha, I'm a good decade older than him. But good to know he's an 80's kid at heart ;)
It’s funny how I, as a German 20 years old, had the whole theme song instantaneously in mind. I also didn’t know that the A-Team is known in so many countries. But I love the whole show since years and thought I would be the only one to start humming out of nowhere.
As Joe leans an old pallet up against the fort he says, “I’m not going to leave it looking all junkie, I going to wrap a tarp around it.” LMAO
Reading this as I'm watching it play out lol
My thought exactly! ;)
It was killing me that he still had no ladder - now he does, that's good enough :-D
Love to see how the Fort is coming along.
I would love to see the window framed with thin logs or thick branches for a more natural look.
Love how the fort is looking Joe. Amazing job!
Cant wait to see how the Fort holds up when snow starts to fall.
I've been watching your videos for a while now Joe, and i must say; you motivate me to do a lot of things in my everyday as i am struggling with depression and anxiety. You give me courage and the will to live my life and not just give up on it. May sound weird, but you really do.
I grew up with nature around me and have spend hours and hours in the woods building forts, exploring and just enjoying nature. I really want to get back out there and by watching you, i am slowly getting myself motivated to go on my first trip in a long time. Thank you for that.
I hope you and your family are going to have a nice christmas and a happy new year.

Wow the Fort looks incredible. Great job Joe. Looking forward to seeing the door idea.

You've almost got enough rocks to build a primitive oven. You know you're going to want a roast chicken this winter at the fort - build it!
Excuse my ignorance, I was very surprised to watch that the soil gets that hard, I mean, it may be very obvious for someone who lives in such a cold place, but I come from a tropical country and I never though about that, I am happy to have learn a little bit more about the winter in other countries... thank you very much for doing this videos, specially now that many of us can not go outside that often.
Its the water in the soil that freezes. And its basically an ice cube.
Also it can freeze several feet deep. Look up permafrost. ;)
Just wanted to say that I've enjoyed your you tube clips since you started building your fort from the ground up. Its brought back memories of me and my brothers building little huts in wooded areas from our childhood area. Take care and God bless

Little trick I learned ages ago in a winter survival course is setting small fires on the ground near the stump to thaw the nearby ground. If you are worries about the fire going into roots/underground you can build it on stones. It is a real good trick to thaw frozen ground.
Your so right about exploding rocks Joe, however there's a exception if you do need to use river stone's,just pick the ones that are heavy and porous looking they are volcanic rocks.
We have had to learn this skill for gathering stones for cooking or hangi or Umu cooking in NZ which is handi in a camping situation,,also heating them and laying them under around sleeping area, very warming.
Cheers Wattie
Brooke Whipple, when she was on Alone and on her channel, has talked a few times about using a white tarp when shelter building. She says that the light coming through the white tarps is much less depressing than with the blue or green ones. It feels much less cave like. It would probably be better for filming too.
I was also thinking about white or silver walls. He wouldn't have to remove what is there, just tack it up on one or two of the walls or the ceiling, or even the inside of the tarp wall.
@@L-Anded I was thinking of replacing the green tarp he put on the open end, so that he would have white light coming in rather than the green tint. It would be better for filming, and more comfortable to hang out in.
