Jaw-dropping vintage dresser transformation! 😲

- This was a gorgeous dresser to flip! My initial plan was to paint it blue and gild it, but when I found out it was a John Widdicomb, I pivoted and decided to do a full refinish. I removed the finish, sanded through the grits and applied a dye stain. I started with light brown and then added a coat of medium brown to deepen the color. I did a pinstripe of gold around the drawers and then sealed the whole thing with a hard wax oil. Isn’t it lovely?!

Just a little tip I use. If you keep the sanding dust and mix a little with some PVA wood glue it makes a wood filler with the same colour as the natural wood. Fill it slightly proud to allow for shrinkage and sand smooth. It will take the stain the same as the wood so it makes it easier to camouflage the repair. Only use wood filler if you intend to paint it. Very nice job by the way
I’ve tried that before with little success, but I’ll try it again. Thanks! 🙌🏼
@@ivylaneinteriors I use it on oak making boards from strips. It colour matches perfectly. Wishing you success. You have skill
I've tried that and found the glue won't take the stain so it didn't work.
I've done that many times! ❤
@@trudyeby464 …I use evostick resin W waterproof. I have only used it on oak and I use brush on wax which I rub off after about 19/15 mins. It provides the colour and a nice soft sheen. I don’t know how it would work on any other wood or with any other stain but for me, the results have been perfect
My husband was a very talented carpenter. Quit school in 10th grade. Joined navy got his ged and took a class by mail and learned drafting. Got a job in a cabinet shop, worked with two very good carpenter 1 from Germany and 1 from Italy where he learned great skills from them. He was great at building he became awsome at remodeling, got his general contractor license. Thats why I love to watch you bring furniture to life. ALOHA retired to Hawaii. 84 lost my husband 6 years ago.
I wish I could apprentice under someone. I’m more of a learn as I go. I do read a lot about new techniques. It’s fun to try new things. Thanks for watching and sharing your story 🫶
That tiny touch of gilding is perfect! You really brought this beauty back to life.
Ah, I agree! Glad to have a fellow appreciator of gilding. 🤩
Absolutely stunning! The wood grain is to die for gorgeous! 😊❤
It’s SO good!! 😊🤩🙌🏼
Thank you so much for treating this quality vintage piece with respect! That waterfall edge deserved to shine on!
Indeed! I can’t believe I was going to paint it 😬😊🤩
Really like the darker color. I think it looked less expensive with the lighter wood. Great job!
Thank you! I loved the final tone!
Beautiful! Even though that finish was hard to remove it probably was instrumental in protecting the wood. I admire your attention to detail and persistence in getting things right!
I think you are exactly right! There were hardly any scratches and just the one gouge. It allowed me to get a beautiful finish. 🤩
I like the gold trim around the edges of the drawers. Great job!
Me too! It was my favorite part 🤩
Luminous! That's the perfect word😊 That wood grain is everything! You are so inspiring!
Aw, thanks Susan! In person, it is just stunning! It was a cloudy day when I took the pictures. I wish I could have photographed in natural light
Thanks for the General Finishes Univ tip! Fantastic piece.
You’re welcome! They are a wealth of information 🙌🏼
A truly amazing piece The gold pinstripe made the edges pop Happy you went darker with it too Hope you got a great price it
I loved the gold too! Yes, I sold it for $800 which I felt was a fair price 🙌🏼
You did an awesome job. The gold pinstripes are gorgeous.
Aw, thanks!! I love the pinstripe too. 🤩
Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous!!!!!!!
I agree! 😊
Just an FYI, you don't glue your drawer bottoms in. You tack them with small tack nails. Another FYI, anytime you need to take apart something glued, use white distilled vinegar using a glue needle. Let it sit for a few mins, then it should come out easy. If not use another go of the vinegar. Works!!
I only glued the wood supports on the back. Gotcha on the glue, thanks!! 😊 🙌🏼
I loooove you're work! You inspire me! ❤❤🎉🎉
Aw, thank you! 😊
Absolutely gorgeous! 🌺
Thank you! 😊
Awesome result 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

Beautiful work. Love the pinstripe
Thanks so much! Me too 🤩
That is stunning!!! The gilding is gorgeous too. I really like your work!
Thank you very much!
This piece turned out to be a definite show stopper❤❤❤ I highly admire your ability to paint as well as restore 👏🏾 Awesome job🥰
Thanks Cassandra!! It is a special piece 🤩
Hi, wood clamp and saw tip, when you need to use a “fence” as a guide to the saw like you did with the level(way to overcome and adapt), don’t clamp the level down, in this case clamp Behind the level. They will clamp tighter for you. Then put just one clamp on the level to keep if from skidding with you. The level will stay in line for your guide more easily and you won’t have to fight to keep it exactly line up for your straight line.
Ah, great tip. Thanks!
Great result. I like your perectionism.... Happy New Year 2024!
Thanks Helen!! Happy new year to you!! 🤩
Just began watching! You are really going the EXTRA mile on this one! Enjoying watching and will comment when finished watching!
Thanks Mary! 🙌🏼
Stunning! Definitely a piece to be refinished rather than painted.
For sure! 🙌🏼💯
Absolutely gorgeous ❣
Thank you! 😊
Beautiful! Thanks for always talking us through the process. It makes you think you could do it too! Also love the gold trim with the gorgeous wood grain. It think it makes the piece and really highlights the beauty of the wood.
Thanks Ann! I love the gold too! 😊🤩
Gorgeous. The wood grain is amazing. You did a beautiful restoration on this amazing piece and I love the gold trim and the hardare.......absolutely amazing!
Thank you very much! 🤩
So pretty! The wood is gorgeous & I love the pinstripes ❤❤❤❤❤

Thank you so much! 🤩
Wow. So beautiful.
Many many thanks 😊
You took your time and it turned out beautiful! Great job!
Thanks Shelley!! 🤩
This is absolutely gorgeous!! Thanks for the detailed walkthrough of blending the repaired areas. I have MCM walnut dresser I need to make some repairs on, so it was helpful to watch you. Thanks!!
You’re welcome, Rachel! Repairs are something I’m still working on. I used to just fill and paint but I’m getting braver. 😬😊
I love the way you kept the piece with the beautiful grain showing. I honestly wasn't loving the gold trim at first but when I saw the finished product I think it brought the warm tones of the wood out beautifully. Thank you for painting over this beautiful vintage piece.
I have a waterfall front dresser and cedar chest in these tones that I would love to restore. Watching your videos are giving me ideas and inspiration.
I can’t believe I was going to paint it! I was pleased with how it turned out. You should totally do it!!🙌🏼
Love the wood grain and colors 😊
Me too! Thanks so much!! 🤩🙌🏼
Just beautiful!
Thank you! 😊 🙌🏼
Stunning finished unit.
Many thanks! 😊
Absolutely stunning
Thank you so much! 😊
Such a great end result! Your attention to detail is inspiring.
Thanks Kay! 🤩
Woah. This may be my all time favorite of yours Lisa. You absolutely nailed it. What a gorgeous piece. I would try a dye stain. Unfortunately, I have not been able to find any General Finishes products in my area. I love that you spend time with us showing different veneer repair products. Thank you for sharing. You are now called the Queen of Wood Wizards!
Lisa, you are so sweet! 🫶 I order most of my GF on Amazon. It’s just easier because my local distributor is about 30 minutes away.
Beautiful job. The wood was amazing!!!!!
Thank you very much! 🤩🙌🏼
I try to restore when I can. Yes, I need to track down some sample keys. 🙌🏼
The bondo scraper/credit card with the sandpaper tip is great. Thank you. The whole piece turned out amazing. I loved your colour choice and the pinstripe gilding.
Aw, thanks!
Looks fantastic 👏.
Thank you! 😊
I am a new subscriber and I enjoy your videos greatly. You do fantastic work and I love seeing how you turn old, unwanted furniture into gorgeous statement pieces. I think upcycling is an awesome thing to do. Repurposing, repairing or reusing things like furniture is so amazing. I absolutely love watching you flip items and give them a new lease of life. You do wonderful work. God bless you and your family.
Aw, thanks Carly!! Glad you’re here 🫶
Awesome work. Looks sooo nice... I wish I had more tools too.
Thanks so much!! There’s always something to buy 😬😅
Love your work - you are quickly becoming my favourite CZcamsr 😊
Aw, thanks Angela! 🫶😊
Just beautiful.
Thank you very much! 🫶😊
Gorgeous! So great that you didn't just paint it.
This one needed a restore 😍🙌🏼
Great job, I was so afraid your were going to paint it. You worked real hard on this one and the results are fantastic. You really beat yourself up on the repair of the holes. Several times I thought it looked just fine but you were not satisfied with it. I guess that is what makes you a pro. Look forward to seeing more of your fine work.
Right?! After seeing the wood grain, I can’t believe I thought about painting it. 🤦♀️I’m a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to furniture. 😬 Thanks so much!
Beautiful🤩
Thanks 🤗
Thank you!!😊
Turned our beautiful, the wood grain is stunning. Have you ever thought about using odies oil? They have all kinds of products😊😊😊
Thank you! No, I’ve never used Odies.
You did a beautiful job. I wasn’t sure I would like the gold gilding, but it looks really good.
Aw, thanks! I love a little bling 💎
Definitely like it darker!
Me too! Thanks Amy!
That piece turned out beautifully. You really did an excellent job.
Thank you very much! 🙌🏼🫶
simply WOW 😱
You have skills plus Courage ! 🦁
Thank you very much! 🙌🏼🤩
You are the Queen of sanding and scraping!
Well, I do love a good wood grain reveal 👸🏼
@@ivylaneinteriors I’m learning so much from you Lisa…I appreciate your insight and wisdom. I’m looking to refurbish a 30+ year dresser this summer.
Awesome! Good luck!
Lots of work, well worth it in the end.absolutly beautiful, glad you didn't paint it.❤❤❤
Thank you!! Me too!! 😬😊🤩
What a beautiful makeover! I’m so glad you didn’t paint it! 😊
Me too!! ☺️ Thanks Lesley!
Wow, what a great find!!! I'm sure it would be like the last one. The Beast. Lol
Ha, right?! This one was a pleasure to refinish, well, except for those holes on top! 😅🙌🏼
It came out beautifully . I like the look of wood there was a time I never understood painting wood, although painted furniture is trendy right now. I must admit when I see a well done painted piece it can really brighten things up. I always liked dye stains, but you need a well prepped surface although gel stains can go right on top without as much prep.
I love painted pieces too, especially when the wood grain is underwhelming. I’ve been a gel stain user, but the dye stain really impressed me. I can see it not working well without the proper prep though 🙌🏼
I don't think I have ever seen such beautiful wood. You did a fantastic job restoring it and I'm so glad you didn't paint it . I have painted some pieces recently because I just am too old , but when I was younger and stronger, I always restored to the original wood. I'm curious to know what kind of wood was on your piece? Again, it is beautiful.
Right?! Just stunning. 🤩 I’m not very good with wood identification. 🤷♀️
Stunning wood, the dye stain you decided to use really brought it to life. Enjoy watching you push yourself into new territory, totally paid off and you slayed this! Where did you score this lovely dresser?
I agree! I was pleasantly surprised with the dye stain! Can you believe I got it for free?! A friend knows I do furniture and offered it to me. 🤩
Don't you love it when you stumble onto a treasure?! That's gorgeous!
I also like that little Kobalt saw you used on the dowels. I'm gonna have to take a trip to Lowe's because I can find all kinds of uses for one of those.
Indeed! This one was a bit of a surprise. Oh, I love Lowe’s. So many goodies.
So glad you freed that magnificent woodgrain from its old finish! Seeing the result, it would have been a crime if someone had painted it. I bet that grain really glows when a ray of sun crosses it. Beautiful, quality work :)
It truly is stunning in person 🤩 Thank you!
This video had so much content! Loved learning about the dye stains, and General Finishes has great products and information. Liked learning about the repair process for the back pieces as well as the patched hole techniques. You are an artist at disguising those repairs! 3 questions...I have the same carbide scraper, how often do you have to sharpen the blade before replacing? Mine seems dull after 2 projects even with interim sharpening. Also, how do you advise clients to care for the oiled finish? Is it durable if someone puts a wet glass on it? Question 3, did the 2nd application of the dark stain even out the wood tones on the two different types of wood? The wood color on the two different species was very different with the light brown dye, but seemed very consistent on the finished piece.
Thanks Heidi! You’re so sweet 🫶 I flip the blades over to get more use and then buy new when needed. I need to buy a sharpening stone. It’s on the list. I used this oil on a table for myself and it’s super durable. I can be reapplied too. I haven’t given the link to buyer’s about the reapplication, but I should. Yes, when I applied the medium brown stain it totally evened out both wood tones so that they matched. It was magic! 🪄
We (my hubby) had to replace a drawer bottom on a 100+ year old empire dresser. Nothing crazy, but we stained the inside as well. Been there!
Those older dressers can be tricky. I'm not as good on repairs, but I'm learning.
Grand Rapids , MI is my hometown! I love when I can find furniture from the Grand Rapids companies!
They made good furniture 🙌🏼🤩
I’ve seen somebody on CZcams that uses Fine tip pens to draw the grain into the filled areas. I get the impression they are suitable for this type of application on timber and are designed to do that. Hope this helps. 😊
Yes, I've seen those too. I haven't bought them yet, but I need to try them!
You made that wood sing a new song! Good for you working through new skills and figuring out how to work with what you have. But goodness why hasn’t a tool company helped you out with a sponsorship? Get that lady a table saw and a surfprep sander and vac!
Good job as always love your work. Thanks
Ha, wouldn’t that be fabulous!! Actually, I just bought a new sander and dust extractor. I feel so fancy. 💁♀️
Grand-tastic ! Bonus for fans of thus mahogany .Its called (ribbon cut mahogany) if there's no screw holes in the back of the dresser then it was a short back splash like u said They sell 1x3/4 mahogany by the foot ? I had to make a short one to cover 3 holes . Great piece
I wondered if that was what it was called. It was just stunning in person 🤩 Thanks!
Lovely
Thanks so much!! 🤩🙌🏼
cute!
Thank you! 😊
When you said brown stain, I went, "eh." When you said gold pinstripes, I went, "eh." Don't ever listen to me!!! Haha It turned out beautifully. I love ita
Ha! Thank you! 🤩
That was hours of labor for a gorgeous result. The original lacquer was a sin to put over this wood grain. I applaud your mad skills and bravery in trying the wood stain❤
Thanks!! It was definitely a diamond in the rough! 💎
Beautiful and great explanations for us as always. Can you elaborate on why you use OSMO to seal? I don’t see other refinishers use this. Is there a downside to using it? Can you use it over gel stain (oil based) as well as water based stain?
I found it at Woodcraft and did some research on it. It’s a German company. It’s similar to Odies and Rubio Monocoat, but it came highly recommended so I tried it. I love it! It an oil and wax combo so you get the benefit of both and it dries with a natural feel. It can be applied after a light sanding to freshen it up or fix a scratch.
You can use it over oil based stains and water based stains. You just need to check dry time before applying.
@@ivylaneinteriors oh ok TY!
Great call on avoiding paint here. The wood grain is gorgeous. I need to pick up some dye stain now. Does it have a strong odor?
Thanks! I agree! No, it’s not a strong odor and it’s water based. 🙌🏼
I’m even more excited now. Thanks!
On the smaller, narrower areas that did not strip well, you might have tried a razor blade/utility knife blade using it like a card scraper. Smaller, sharper, and more maneuverable, it might have done the job.
Yes, I need a smaller carbide scraper. They make a tiny one with different tips. I just need to put it on my list. 😊
A utility blade is super cheap, and you never have to worry about sharpening it-just toss it out and get the next one. My husband buys a pack of 100 and there are multiple uses. I like the carbide scraper kits, but they have to be somewhat expensive.
I have this large square tool for baking, look it up. It would be awesome in yr work. It's stainless steel. The top of is curled up..❤
I’ll check it out. Thanks! 🙌🏼
I come from a family of carpenters but since I’m female, I didn’t get to do the fun stuff-plus that was way back! I’m in my 70’s now-but I love the smell of fresh sawn wood! I’m so glad you go slow and take precautions. Tools are most often made for taller men with biologically greater upper body strength. You look to be handling the right kind of tools the right kind of ways. You’re very good but I expect in 3-5 years you will be as great as you want to be. I’m so jealous! I wish I were doing all that! But I have limits-so I will plan to re-sand and finish/paint a bookcase, and rebuild three cheapo, rickety, peel n stick finish particle board bookcases that fell apart. That’s plenty to keep me busy, and new activities ( like chalk paint ) to get me in trouble! 😍. Very best wishes to you and other craftsmen & women. You’re keeping my brain learning & my mind active. Hugs. 😊
That’s funny, I love the smell of wood too! Lowes and Home Depot are my happy places. 😅 I love doing furniture and I think all the activity has been good for me and keeping me limber and strong. Knowing your limits is good and yet still trying with small projects is smart. Good luck on your projects 🙌🏼🤩
I love this style dresser. The holes on the back were mostly likely from a mirror as they used to use long wood or metal pegs that held the mirror in place. Most new dressers screw on to the wood pieces on the back. Gorgeous piece though & I’m glad you didn’t paint it.
That was my thought too. I tried to Google lens it to see if I could find what the original looked like, but I couldn’t find anything. I’m glad I didn’t paint it too! 🤩
I can’t find the link to the gold you used anywhere
It’s linked in the description. Let me know if you can’t find it 🙌🏼
Have you ever you’d OSMO over a paint wash? Do you think that would work OK?
I don’t think I ever have. I think you could if you waited 72 hours for the paint to fully dry. I have just used either Behr’s matte poly or General Finishes High Performance Topcoat.
I will be glad when that crumbly quick wood runs out. You have been struggling to make it work awhile now. The piece turned out lovely. Going darker was the right move.
Right?! I think I need to switch to the Mohawk epoxy.
@@ivylaneinteriorsI am trying to remember which flip I watched that had some that was pliable and I think it was John’s furniture. She is from Canada and mentioned she loved it.
I am curious, not trying to trigger anyone, just curious about how you dispose of this debris from stripping?
Once it dries out, you can discard it in the normal trash.
I think dye stains always looks much better than gel stain. Never understood why so many use gel stains. This is gorgeous! That woodgrain 😍.
I am one of the gel stain fans, but I have to say the dye stain is stunning 🤩
❤❤
Thanks Dorothy! 🤩
The drawers sometimes look surprised that you added the gold. 😅
😅🙌🏼
I have a hack for curves. I wear a jersey glove and slap a round sticky sanding disk on the palm. 💁♀️
Great idea! 💡
@@ivylaneinteriors this may be my fav flip you’ve done ✅ love it
