It looks great! I think it may have been made in the late 60's early 70's and I think China on the back is not the country but the fact it is a china buffet.

This was made in Drexel, NC, & part of Drexel Furniture Co's 1956 Sirocco line. It was made of oak & mahogany hardwoods, topped w/mahogany veneer. They also made coffee & end tables, so "China" on the back refers to this being one of their china cabinet styles (the other one had louvered doors at each end.) I have the dining table that matches this, & it is stamped "Sirocco 1956," so I was able to research it online. Because of the beautiful woods used & the quality of Drexel pieces I would have just updated the old greenish finish to a natural wood tone, & reserved the geometric paint redo for a lower quality piece.

I agree. According to U.S. custom import laws, if it was made in China it would need to say made in China! There was also the possibility it was refurbish using old packing material. But after going back and looking at it I feel it is a description of the item as it has a lot number included.

@@Randyshufflesfurnituretrade with China wasn’t opened up until the late 90’s. Most furniture here was still American made until the end of the century. However, the trade agreement with China decimated the American furniture industry in less than 7 years. Odds are it’s not made in China and if it was, it’s maybe 20 years old at the most.

I had that set and a similar one created by Drexel. I kept the Drexel and passed your piece on to my family. That style and color were popular in the late 50s. The piece was manufactured in the US not China. The china stamp means china cabinet as opposed to buffet. Some manufacturers used the same lower piece or one similar and added a hutch to create a china cabinet. Some of those painted pieces were walnut veneers. The Drexel set is solid walnut wood with walnut veneer. The drawer pulls were solid copper.

I agree China means China cabinet. Also agree it was probably made in the 50-60s. I was so glad to see you put a clearcoat over the painted hardware. I watch so many diy people just paint the hardware and think it is enough. Those handles get wipped and used a lot. Two or more coats of clear coat are needed if you want the hardware to look good for any reasonable length of time! It also looks great. A very tastful job!

Great job! A tip for masking areas for painting to avoid bleeding: once your tape is in place, paint the edge & a narrow area of the side to be painted with a matt clear, once dry, apply paint. Any bleeding will be from the clear coat, almost invisible.

Wow the end result is amazing. Great job restyling and executing it. However I have one suggestion... invest in a good pair of scissors. Guggenheim makes a beautiful pair, ads all over CZcams. They are strictly for Fabric. I had a custom drapery shop and regular hardware scissors do not compare. Use on your next fabric project and then put them in a safe place, not your tool box, until the next time. 😊

Great job on the piece! You brought it into the 21st century in style. I believe the piece is a little earlier than the 80's more like the 1970's possibly the 60's.. They would have made multiple pieces for a dining room set so they marked the back of pieces to let you know which piece it was. In this case it was marked "China" Hutch with model number on the back and they would have had a buffet, dining table etc. also marked. So I think the China on the piece is referring to its function rather than the country of origin. Thanks for sharing the transformation.

If the piece was marked by a known maker I probably would have rejoined the pieces and done more of a restoration. But since it was not marked and because of the condition I decided to refinish each piece separately. Also, large hutches like this do not sell very well in my area. As separate pieces they will sell much faster. Thanks for the question.
