This is a piano desk. Old 18th century and 19th century piano forte’s were changed in to desks if the piano forte wasn’t in a good condition or just no longer needed. But I think this one was only based on the model and never really a piano forte or forte piano itself. Nice you gave it a new lease on life.

Oh my goodness. It’s sensational! You don’t find many people who take the time for restoration rather than throwing on paint. It’s so beautiful in its intended finish. I just restored an antique 1928 vanity table for my granddaughter. I was shocked how may layers of latex (5 different colors in multi layers) sat on top of the original shellac finish. I took it to raw wood and brought it back to as close as I could get to original look. Took me 3 months, but it is glorious now (to me, anyway). I love your work 🎉 22:03

I picked up just the core part of one of these “spinnet desks”, so named after a musical instrument it’s modeled after, at an antique store several years ago. Had no idea what type of desk it was (what it was called) or what I would do with it. I’ve since seen two videos, this and one put out by Thomas Johnson Antique Furniture Restoration and now I know what the legs/bottom should look like, how then(missing) lid should work.
Thanks for a great video, I’m inspired to start work on restoring what’s left of mine. It’ll make a great home office with a laptop and just the necessities for paying bills, able to be closed and keep that stuff outta sight. 😊
    Edit: a typo

Very nice !! When you are dealing with woods that throw red, put a green base down first. it neutralizes the red then you can put on your stains. We use an analyzed dye stain for that. I don't know where you are in the valley but Rockler and Wood Craft carry that. The other thing you can do is put down your first color and then spray a mixture of 10% shellac mixed with 90% denatured alcohol. This also gets rid of the blotchiness in the figured woods and will block the red. If you can't find these let me know I live in Mesa, I buy all that in bulk from wholesalers Have lots of that on hand. I do massive amounts of cherry and mahogany's

No argument that it's looks great... but a period piece should be treated with the old techniques they deserve. Avoid using carpenter's glue whenever possible on antiques, use hide glue unless it's for a structural repair. Avoid using poly's and lacquers and go for the French polish using shellac- more time consuming, but it's cheaper and you'll get a much better more traditional finish out of it. And never, I mean never, glue the bottom of a drawer into its frame- it defeats the point of slotting the bottom in if it can't float and move with time, temperature, and humidity. It will cause structural issues with the draw frame over time. There's definitely potential in your work, keep going.

Totally agree on drawer, but other than that, I think it is lovely. I have a couple of period pieces that are lacquered (not poly and obviously not from a spray can considering age) but lacquer nonetheless 😊. The lacquer may be an aftermarket thing, but it was done WAY before me. Looks nice. Thanks for the vid…

I have a similar desk and the legs screw directly into the base via a single bolt. When I first discovered this construction feature, two of the legs were on so tightly I had a very difficult time removing them. Perhaps the legs of your desk are attached this way. If so, you may have had an easier time stripping them as they would have been easier to handle.
