- Watch me restore and give new life to this old desk. (Not so) Easy furniture flip or DIY project. Trash to treasure. The difference on this project is amazing.

I believe we should keep and restore our old furniture, they were so beautifully made and have such history!
I agree completely. When I see how the older furniture is constructed compared to most newer furniture, the difference is amazing. Thanks for watching!
"The Gum Is Gone",....One of the most unique and classic woodworking terms that I've ever heard.
Thanks!
This is called a spinet desk, I absolutely love them, great job!

Right!?
Добрый день. Прекрасная работа. Получилось очень красиво.
Thank You!
You did great...
Brought it back to life.
Save it to be appreciated again...❤
Thank you so much!
This is a piano desk. Old 18th century and 19th century piano forte’s were changed in to desks if the piano forte wasn’t in a good condition or just no longer needed. But I think this one was only based on the model and never really a piano forte or forte piano itself. Nice you gave it a new lease on life.
Thank You! Also thanks for the information.
A labor of love! Beautiful work

Beautiful job! What an amazing piece of history….thank you for bringing it back to life❤
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks
Thankyou so much for your videos. I have a love of antique wooden pieces. My home is full of them. Now have the confidence to buy not so perfect pieces and restore myself for my pleasure. My latest project is a mahogany 1940 room screen.
Sounds like an interesting piece to work on. Good Luck! I just love saving old pieces from the thrift stores and giving them a new life. I don't pretend to be a professional at all. I just love doing it. Thanks for watching!
Absolutely beautifully refurbished! I love your work.
Thank you for the kind words!
Que bonito resultado señor lo felicito saludos desde Mexico

This is, hands down, the best antique furniture renovation I have ever seen! 👏
Wow! Thank you so much! I just love giving furniture another chance. Thanks for watching.
I love your videos, how you detail every step, the grade of sandpaper you use, the typer of stain and varnish you apply etc... I'm learning a ton from watching your videos. Thank you for making them!@@Randyshufflesfurniture
Beautifully done.
Thank you very much!
Достойная работа!
Thanks!
So beautiful indeed!
Thank you 🙏🏼
Glad you enjoyed it!
You're very good at this and way more patient than I am. Wow, how beautiful. I loved those gorgeous diamond details and would probably have bought the piece for that reason alone. She might be old but I think she's got a lot of story yet to tell and now she will, thank you! ❤
When I Find theses pieces I always imagine the life that they have had before they get to me. I like to think that they have a lot more life left. Thanks for watching.
has to have patience, drives a Jeep!
Nicely done Randy love the dark blue finish.
Thanks
Really nice job. Your boyfriend is going to love it!
Thanks!
Beautiful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you!!
Oh how I love this piece!!!!! What a great find 🤗 You did a beautiful job!!!!!
Thank you so much!
I have this almost exactly same desk I'm refinishing now.....instead of the diamonds on either side, mine has 2 drawers on either side......crazy!!!!😂😂😂. I think I'll watch this!
I'm sure it will turn out great. Have fun!
Good job!🌷🌷
Thank you! 😃
I didn't think I'd like the color choices, but I was wrong. Nice job!
Thanks!
Gosh I loved this piece even before you did anything with it. Thanks for your terrific and thoughtful approach.
Thank you so much!
I grew up with my mother's piano desk; eventually, she gave it to me. Our desk had two little drawers for the first and last cubbyholes.
I'll bet there were many versions of this type of desk. Hope you enjoy it. Thanks for watching.
Oh my goodness. It’s sensational! You don’t find many people who take the time for restoration rather than throwing on paint. It’s so beautiful in its intended finish. I just restored an antique 1928 vanity table for my granddaughter. I was shocked how may layers of latex (5 different colors in multi layers) sat on top of the original shellac finish. I took it to raw wood and brought it back to as close as I could get to original look. Took me 3 months, but it is glorious now (to me, anyway). I love your work 🎉 22:03
Thank You! It sounds like the vanity table you did for your grandmother turned out amazing. Good for you and I'm sure your grandmother loved it! Another piece that will be enjoyed for many years to come.
STUNNING
Thanks
Great job! The desk looks fabulous!
Thanks so much! 😊
Absolute beautiful job!
I love restoring too and it is very time consuming, but the results are so satisfying!
I totally agree! Thanks!
I picked up just the core part of one of these “spinnet desks”, so named after a musical instrument it’s modeled after, at an antique store several years ago. Had no idea what type of desk it was (what it was called) or what I would do with it. I’ve since seen two videos, this and one put out by Thomas Johnson Antique Furniture Restoration and now I know what the legs/bottom should look like, how then(missing) lid should work.
Thanks for a great video, I’m inspired to start work on restoring what’s left of mine. It’ll make a great home office with a laptop and just the necessities for paying bills, able to be closed and keep that stuff outta sight. 😊
Edit: a typo
Thanks for the information! Good luck on your project!
“spinnet desks”
@@garyv2196 good catch! Stupid autocorrect…
Nice!
From an Aussie that's an A+.
Wow, thanks!
Great design for study desk
Thank you! Cheers!
@@Randyshufflesfurniture you have restored it very well 👍👍
Beautiful!!!
Thank you!!
Very nice !! When you are dealing with woods that throw red, put a green base down first. it neutralizes the red then you can put on your stains. We use an analyzed dye stain for that. I don't know where you are in the valley but Rockler and Wood Craft carry that. The other thing you can do is put down your first color and then spray a mixture of 10% shellac mixed with 90% denatured alcohol. This also gets rid of the blotchiness in the figured woods and will block the red. If you can't find these let me know I live in Mesa, I buy all that in bulk from wholesalers Have lots of that on hand. I do massive amounts of cherry and mahogany's
Thanks for the tip! I'll definitely have to try those techniques on future pieces. Thanks!!
Very pretty!
Thank you! Cheers!
Buen trabajo 👌👍🇪🇸🌿
Thank You!
It’s beautiful!
Thank You!!
Maravillosa restauracion.Es un escritorio precioso, curiosamente fabricado.Gracias por compartir.Saludos de Mery desde Cantabria (España)
Thank You!
I found this same desk in the garbage, took it out, polished it and it now sits in my living room.
I love to hear about pieces that are saved from going to the landfill.
Impossible to argue with how nicely that turned out. Fabulous.
Thank you so much!
the gum was for later lol😉I love this desk
Hahahaha. Thank You!
So happy I ran into this!!! Great job...only thing for me to do is the legs😔😔...not looking forward to... Thanks!!!
You got this!
Nice work friend, have a nice day . Brian UK !!!. 😀😀👍👍.
Thanks, you too!
Ignore the nay sayers--this turned out beautiful! Opinions are like ***holes; everyone has one. And some people are one.
Unfortunately you are absolutely right! Thanks for the comment.
From one restorer to another, beautiful job. Don't you just love bringing these old peace's back to life? new subscriber.
Thank you. I am fairly new and that means a lot to me! I love giving pieces a new chance at another 100 years.
Wow so beautiful
Thank you! Cheers!
I have one of these! It is a spinet desk. I have one that belonged to my great great grandparents. It needs work, too. But thankfully no gum!
Haha. The gum was a surprise. Thanks for watching.
Greetings from Florida! Love your work! If no one has mentioned it yet, this style of desk is called a Spinet desk. The name comes from the lift top that looks like the keyboard cover of a spinet piano. Take care!
Thanks for the info!
I enjoy watching your videos and the growing success of your channel! You did a great job with this piece.
Thank you so much! I really appreciate it!
What an amazing find. Personally don’t care for that. Super dark top but what can you do. I was shocked one hour when you glue that drawer bottom into the groove. I’ve never seen anybody do that.
Learning every day. Making mistakes is part of the process. Thanks for watching.
Wow, wow, wow! It looks absolutely stunning now! Gorgeous job!😊
Thanks so much! 😊. Thanks for watching!
I very love it. :-)
Thank you!
Absolutely beautiful ! Great job 👏
Thank you! Cheers!
Bellissimo! Complimenti
Thanks!
Looks Great very cool
Thank you! Cheers!
This turned out absolutely gorgeous!! You are so very talented sir!! Staining the inside of the drawer so that the wood was not so "blonde" compared to the rest of the piece, would have been a nice touch. I've just discovered your channel today, this is the second video I have seen and I'm about to choose another!
Thank you very much! I didn't even think about staining the inside of the drawer. Thanks for the idea.
WOW - that is beautiful. I've never seen a desk like that here in England. It looks stunning now - I'd be proud to have that in my home. I've only just found your channel, so am now a sub with lots to catch up on ! Thanks for sharing your skills. Take care 🙂
Thank you for the kind words.
Great work. Personal preference: I'm not a fan of multicolored wood on furniture (not talking about marquetry or parquetry).
Thanks for watching.
Ve nicely done. Thank You👍👍
Thank you for watching!
No argument that it's looks great... but a period piece should be treated with the old techniques they deserve. Avoid using carpenter's glue whenever possible on antiques, use hide glue unless it's for a structural repair. Avoid using poly's and lacquers and go for the French polish using shellac- more time consuming, but it's cheaper and you'll get a much better more traditional finish out of it. And never, I mean never, glue the bottom of a drawer into its frame- it defeats the point of slotting the bottom in if it can't float and move with time, temperature, and humidity. It will cause structural issues with the draw frame over time. There's definitely potential in your work, keep going.
Thanks for the feedback. I will definitely try those techniques on the next antique piece I find. Thanks for watching!
I totally agree on the drawer bottom glue.
I was taken aback to see him do this, visualising the wood splitting over time.He should have realised when the bottom came out freely!
@@victor58010I won’t be making that mistake again. Always learning. Thanks for the comment.
Totally agree on drawer, but other than that, I think it is lovely. I have a couple of period pieces that are lacquered (not poly and obviously not from a spray can considering age) but lacquer nonetheless 😊. The lacquer may be an aftermarket thing, but it was done WAY before me. Looks nice. Thanks for the vid…
Now I’m looking for French polish w/shellac
Good Job
Thank you so much.
Pretty
Thanks!
I have this same desk. The configuration of the cubbies is slightly different. I use it every day.
The new owner of this one loves it.
Thanks for the the comments.
Interesting - 37 S Wabash Avenue is one of the campuses of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. There's history in that there desk... nice job, as well.
Thank you for the information. I am from the Midwest originally myself so that is very interesting.
I have a similar desk and the legs screw directly into the base via a single bolt. When I first discovered this construction feature, two of the legs were on so tightly I had a very difficult time removing them. Perhaps the legs of your desk are attached this way. If so, you may have had an easier time stripping them as they would have been easier to handle.
Thanks for the insight. I didn't want to put too much stress on them and possibly breaking them after the time I had getting the top off. Thanks again!
I would have used shellac too, but you need to learn how to use it first. But you did a beautiful job restoring this desk.
Thanks
I do like how you chose the colorings of the various parts. I do not know enough to agree, disagree with the person who suggested going with the traditional finishings. You did a wonderful transformation with this piece. I have never seen such a lovely thing. When, where and by what group had made this, do you have any idea. Thank you for your care. I will use these decisions to guide me on my own big secretary. Be good. I suspect you are already doing very nicely with the wood. Picture of that pup was a real bit a long with the dog hair.
Thank you for the comments. I would guess maybe from the teens or twenties, not quite sure. I don't know enough about these desks. Good luck with your secretary!
