- I found this painted Danish teak mid century desk on the Facebook Marketplace and knew it needed a restoration. In this video, I will do what I can to remove all the paint and restore it to its original look.
This video is part of the "CZcamss Biggest MCM Challenge" with so many other great creators. Here is the link to the playlist: • CZcams's Biggest MCM ...

Thanks for watching everyone! I noticed I forgot to add the sanding clips at the end. After cleaning everything with water (allowing it to dry) I sanded the entire piece with 240 grit and cleaned it with a tack cloth. Then I applied the Odie's Oil. - Jamie
You're only human. I had to joke in my comment. At least you called it a desk right? 😂
😢9l
You did a great job with this piece of furniture. You don’t have to speed up the video so much. Some of us enjoy watching the work in progress. It’s not boring. Thanks for being part of this challenge.😊
I'll never understand why people cover up such beautiful wood with paint. 1000% improvement.
there were two holes in the top, and they looked bad and were crumbly. So, painting it is easier for a layperson than fixing it. And I wonder if those dark marks on the drawer fronts were there before the painting
Because of the things he discovered under the paint. You have to remember even 10-15years ago there wasn't the wealth of knowledge available that there is now about products and techniques and sometimes ppl do the best they can.
@@NatashaEstrada Plus, this guy is a dedicated furniture restorer, with a shop and tools and experience. For someone who needed that piece of furniture but had limited skills, painting was probably a wis move. If nothing else, it sealed and protected the wood until it could end up in the custody of someone who wanted to-and was able to-restore it.
My thoughts exactly.😢
If you don’t know how to do all this, you paint it. I don’t know how to do this stuff but I have been watching these to learn so I can redo some pieces from my grandparents.
This desk in good condition is valued 2500 dollars here in Europe. Great job taking it back to its glory.
Amazing, seeing it online I thought it would be a decent project but I had no clue it would be a nice danish teak piece! I got lucky. Thanks for watching
Not quite true, though. Gunnar Tibergaard isn’t a name that’s very sought-after here in Denmark. Maybe other European countries value these kind of mid century teak furnitures higher. In Denmark this would be between 500-650 USD in good condition. Danish people really wants lighter wood like oak and beech. Still a great restoration though.
2500$😂 on which planet??
Flipping Draws brought me here! ✊🏾
That is an elegant desk. Great job Jamie 😃
Thanks Jay, happy I could join in on this challenge with everyone 😀
I'm here from Flipping Drawers announcing the challenge, but I'm about 3/4 of the way through the playlist. So, yes, I'm new here, but right off the bat I want to say a big thank you for starting this all out with a lead test!
Persistence with the oxalic acid certainly paid off.
Thank you for this beautiful addition to the MCM Challenge. Teak is such a classic in Danish Modern furniture. I love how this restoration glows with new life. ❤🏆👌✨️❤️
I love the restoration on the desk. Breaking it down to it's individual pieces increases your work but makes such an incredible restoration.
Glad you enjoyed the process!
I love hearing the hockey game in the background. Until I saw your comment I thought it was a UK soccer game!
It sounded like you had your own cheering squad supporting you with every stroke of the steel wool.
haha I wouldn't mind my own in person cheering squad lol thanks for watching!
I deeply appreciate the hockey portion of the program. Excellent work on the desk, too!
Same here :D
I had forgotten about these, but yes, they used to be pretty common when I was a kid … 👍🏻
Nice transformation!! It is gorgeous ❤
thanks :)
Beautiful work, your patience getting all of that paint out of every crevice is admirable. I love the final piece, I’d have that in my home any day 😎
You provide everything! Great work!
Hi Jamie. It's such an elegant table and you made it look amazing. It's fun to watch you work 😊🤗
The stripper left a mess, good job the acid worked. Another great job J! You forgot to sand it though 😅🤪
Yes thankfully it worked after a handful of applications... and lol I was rushing to get this video completed for the deadline and of course had to miss something 🤣 Thanks for watching tequeena :)
Many people don’t realize that when you Paint a piece of furniture with regular paint you would use on drywall hous interiors especially in wet climates, the likelihood that Rot will ensue under the paint & Mold will grow is strong. As shown by this little Teak floating drawer desk. Another reason I don’t like painted furniture. This was a great restoration of this valuable Mid Century Modern cleaver Teak Floating Drawer Desk. Turned out very pretty . Blessings from Dozer, Butter Bean & me in Garden Ridge Texas❤
Gotta give whoever painted it credit they did a good job of it
Great job Jamie 👍 I felt your pain when you found those holes under the paint 😮😀👍👍👍
Thanks David! Never fun finding holes haha enjoyed doing the challenge with you! 🙂
Teak is such a gorgeous wood. Your project turned out really nice. I hope you do a little video on the color paints when you do the filled in holes, I'd like to see it.
What a gorgeous makeover! I’m a first time viewer but I will be back. I love your filming/editing style. You say so much without saying a word 😊
Thank you so much!! :)
Glad that you participated in the MCM Challenge otherwise I would never have found your posts. Very nicely restored Teak Desk. In the 1960's, I had a Teak sideboard with IDENTICAL handles! Brought back many memories. I've no idea where it is now. Probably painted purple and sitting in someone's garage now :(
Looks great!!! Night and day flip!
Dude you made that desk glow 😮!
Well done 💪
I'm here from FLIPPING DRAWERS and MAYFIELD RESTORATIONS.
Forget the hockey game you need cheerleaders. You did a great job, especially when admitting you couldn't do a part complete and require additional supplies. To me that's a sign of a good crafts person. A beautiful looking piece of furniture and even better now you took the time to remove the paint. I've given a thumbs up, subscribed/bell notification and I will watch your other videos.
Thanks so much! I appreciate your kind comment and that you subscribed, it means a lot :)
So pretty! I think that is the exact desk my mother had for her home office (or it is such a close twin that it hardly matters). Love it.
I love teak. Not every project goes as planned but you made the best of it.
thanks!
Very well done! The restoration is great!!❤
Great job restoring this…it turned out beautifully.
Thank you very much!
Wow❤ you turned this into a shopcase piece. Beautifully done
Nice work Jamie! Glad to see you back in action!
Hi Jaime. The desk looks so much better. Thank you for salvaging this beauty!
Nice job! The water in the stripper reacting with the original finish is possibly what stained the wood. I had some teak/walnut lamp bases that got wet when they were mostly bare wood and they turned black. Didn't try any oxalic acid on them as they were pretty beat up already.
Great job!!!! Can’t wait to see how you blend those other spots out.
Thanks! Will be fun to figure out how to blend it all together. Thanks for watching :)
Is the hole in the middle of the top an appropriate place to install a cable access puck?
Man, that was a Buzzfeed Nifty looking nightmare and you brought it back to prominence. Great job even with the discolored patches.👍🏽
Beautiful!!
Thank you! Glad you like it!
Wow! This is Furniture Reincarnation!! Such great skill and patience. 👏🏼
Gorgeous!! What wonderful work!
Felicitation mr c'est un très beau travail jaime bcp ce meuble est magnifique 👍👍👍🥰👌
Beautiful end result! You are a skilled craftsman. Thanks for joining this challenge so those of us new to your channel can follow along with your work.
What a gorgeous piece, can't believe someone would cover that beautiful wood with paint. You have restored a gem, beautiful!😃😃
A mid century modern beauty!
The set of drawers slides so you can choose the best side, RIGHT or left, for whoever is going to use it. Great work, congratulations.
Great job I like your editing
Thanks!
Wooo! Go hockey players! 🤣 I wish I was Canadian, but sadly I'm just a lowly southern US citizen living vicariously through Canadians in Mississippi 🤣
This is amazing. The teal paint kills the appeal of furniture instantly for me, always so satisfying to see it off 😂
Hi Jamie, you did a great job😮, good luck with the challenge🤞
Thank you Luca! Much appreciated :) Good luck to you as well, enjoyed doing this challenge with everyone!
(South African here) We had a lot of these in the 80s and 90s but our humid climate means the chipboard or particle board turns to powder very quickly. I'm working on my Brazilian hardwood writing bureau at the moment. I got it cheap because the seller had caked it with hideous cerise red chalk paint and no one wanted it. But getting the paint out every crevice has been extremely difficult as it's a ball and claw linen fold design.I finished the drawers today and they look amazing, though.
Great job! Precious family to help.
FABULOUS! It's a miracle...well, well done.
Thanks so much!
I actually like the dark patches. I'll look forward to seeing what you do with it...
Wow was much better without the dark patches👌
I was thinking they probably painted it because those stains were there. Nice work.
Totally! thanks for watching
It looks amazing...I love mid century furniture.
I'm here for the MCM challenge.
Beautiful restoration! Way to try new things. It turned out great!! I hit subscribe so I can see how you tackle the holes. WELL DONE MAN!!!
I am amazed at your knowledge and hard work to restore this beautiful desk. 😊
Thanks :)
I did like the video. You are a very thorough workman, and the piece shows that your attention to detail will serve you will in getting the small details that you want to improve on done right. I subscribed to your channel today because I'm eager to see what else you get into. When you get all your repairs done on this little guy, add it to a another video as a followup. I'm sure I'm not the only one who wants to see how the repairs turned out. Looking forward to more!!
BEAUTIFUL ❤ I THINK🤔 THE DOORS ARE BURL ❤
It looks beautiful and you did a wonderful job restoring it as well!!!!
I enjoyed your video so I gave it a Thumbs Up
I found you through the challenge. Thank you for taking part. This is quite a transformation!
That paint job was such an abomination. I appreciated the lead test footage.
Awesome! Thank you!
Great especially considering what it looked like before.
❤ I like this piece. The sliding drawer thing is cool. Hope to see it finished.
Gorgeous!!!😊❤
Thank you! :)
What a beautiful little desk!
Nice job! I think those stains were probably from the citristrip. I had the same thing happen last time I used it years ago. Citristrip used to be good but then they changed the formula and it’s not so good anymore.
Wow--gosh that looks stunning!
I loved watching the restoration. Thanks for checking the lead count. One thing causing the stain may be leaving the stripper on overnight. Many other CZcams restorers take it off within 15 minutes to an hour. But I have never done it so I am guessing. You have top of the line wood and put real effort into the cleaning. It should be fine. I have subscribed.
It makes me wonder what people are thinking when they paint over such gorgeous wood? If it's not criminal to do so, it's certainly misguided. Thanks for bringing it back to its former glory.
Thank you for watching!
Oh God, it looks so good. Super job!!!
Amazing!!! My gram had a telephone seat like that with a party line phone!! Although this seat was far superior and I love that yall celebrated your anniversary weaving. I subscribed after watching as you did a excellent job refinishing this piece ty!
Love the piece, did a great job considering all the challenges. I am anxious to see how you address the holes because I have a piece with similars issues. I really like your editing, I have a difficult time watching longer videos.
First time viewer. Trying to watch all the MCM challenges that other restoration ppl are so generously posting to promote. I enjoyed the piece you restored and I think out of the 10 I’ve watched so far, you have the most unique piece. Most ppl who watch these kind of videos enjoy half hour or even longer. If you slow down your video a bit I think you would get more ppl to come back. (Subscribers)You need to know you’re worth it bc you do very good wrk. Good luck and keep um coming. New subscriber today. Thank you
Thanks for subscribing :) and I appreciate the tip, it seems many people appreciate a longer video, great information to have!
Spectacular restore on the desk. Shabbyguy ran into that issue with Citristip not too long ago on a Provincial top. He doesn't touch the stuff no more.
Maybe ill ask shabby, he is a friend of mine! Thanks for watching
Absolutely beautiful great job ❤❤❤❤
It looks very nice now.
Great craftsmanship
Thank you
That ended up being a very nice piece. Great find! 🍻
Thanks!! I enjoyed doing this challenge with you 🍻🙂
@@FurnitureFlippa Likewise. Look forward to the next one!!
Great job. You are tenacious. Great to be part of the challenge. I follow some of the other participants channels. Watch them all, repeated times. Some are very knowledgeable. Keep it up😊
Thanks Faith! :)
Inspite of the holes, it turned out beautiful.
She looks good.
Fantastic transformation!!
it came out great! looking forward to the blending of those spots on top!
Thanks! hopefully I can blend it all together nicely haha I enjoyed doing the challenge with you!!
@@FurnitureFlippa likewise! We have a desk we may be doing soon too. Tops in rough shape, they sanded trough the veneer around the ends so going to probably put a new top on it
When I encounter such issues with damage I have found that a gel stain goes a long way to hide and blend the damage and repairs. I usually save pure oil finishes for pristine pieces only because Im never happy with seeing the repairs. Really looking forward to seeing how it turns out after trying the mohawk colours! 👍
Beautiful job. It's nice to find someone who respects the beauty of wood. 😊
Great job!
Thanks I appreciate it!
gorgeous, you have done a great job
What an amazing restoration. It is absolutely gorgeous. You did a fantastic job. I know those spots that need blending will come out great once you get all the materials you need. I suggest doing the "corrective paint" in layers. Angie from Transcend Furniture has had a lot of success with camouflaging spots. Thanks for sharing your amazing teak desk with us.
Thanks glad you enjoyed. Ill check out some different methods! Thanks for watching :)
I liked your video. You did a good job on the refinishing and I enjoyed watching. It will be interesting to see how you deal with the patches.
Lovely work 😊
Thank you! 🙂
Nice job and a very attractive restoration.
Looks really nice. First time watching you. Followed the link for the challenge
Awesome! I enjoyed doing this challenge with all the other creators, they are all amazing to chat with and have incredible skills. Appreciate you checking out my channel/video!
Couple of tips for you; when you are first using oxalic acid wash the peice over with a fairly strong solution of soda crystals and this will 'bite' in and you may think this has ruined it, but then wash the soda back so there's only a weak solution left on the wood. Whilst this is still damp go on with your oxalic acid solution and you will find these two chemicals 'react out', one neutralising the other. Wash this back again so there's more or less no chemicals left, then go back again with another solution of oxalic acid. Let this completely dry in and then finally rinse with clear water. Note this is safer on solid timber, need to take a little more care with veneers. When applying the epoxy wood filler if this get in surrounding graining it's hard to get out and will alter the grain texture, so it's best to tape up very carefully around the hole before apply. To mimic the natural grain pattern on the epoxy filler, before your final sand pick out the grain texture with a needle and this will make the blending in much more natural 👍
Gorgeous restoration. The drawers seemed to catch when you took them out so I wish you had shown what was causing that and what you did to fix that issue. Thanks for the lesson.😊 I have restored a lot of furniture (not professionally) and always love to learn more.
Thanks for watching! The drawers are actually perfect on this desk, possibly the paint just slowing down the glide, but other than that they are in perfect condition.
Good job! Congratulations!🌷🌷
Beautiful 🤎 🤎
Beautiful! Thank you!
Terrific result !
You did a beautiful job!!!😊❤
Wow! Looks great. Love that desk
Thanks! Glad you like it!
FABULOUS 🤩
