- In this video, observe as I tenderly breathe new life into this beloved piece, safeguarding its genuine patina despite enduring neglect and water damage. With a steadfast dedication to upholding the integrity of its original paint, I meticulously execute minor touch-ups, elevating its aesthetics while safeguarding its historical significance.
Traditionally, gesso is made by mixing a combination of chalk, gypsum, or marble dust with a binder such as animal hide glue.
I took on the same principle to make a gesso like filler which I applied then wiped off with a wet rag. This method allowed for the cracks to be filled and minimal paint touchups to be done.

I watch a lot of restoration videos and I'm always a little bit conflicted when the restorer makes the items look brand new and shiny. I feel like the piece loses all of its character and almost resembles a reproduction. Your beautiful rocking horse didn't make me conflicted. You did an outstanding job maintaining the antique look but restored the piece bringing it back to life. Well done!
Thank you for watching. I'm glad you enjoyed it, and I really appreciate your comment 👍
Lovely job on this dapple gray pony, he's refreshed & fit to be ridden by little ones once again 🐎🤍

@@LittleRestorers These will be some of their favorite memories...working in the shop with Daddy.
That little “oops” during the intro put the biggest smile on my face.

Beautiful work! 👍
Thanks mate 👍
Very beautiful piece. You did it justice!
Thank you 😉👍
It didn't look too bad until you zoomed in, then the problem areas really showed up.
The "after" was stunning. Thanks for saving this piece of history.
Thank you very much for the comment 👍
There’s no history really, it’s a cheap reproduction horse
Such a pretty fella!

Beautiful restoration 👍👍
Thanks mate 👍
Mate; what an outstanding performance and restoration. I was concerned that you were going to re-paint the piece, but you restored it faithfully by good ol’ elbow grease. You have come such a long way since we first met. Amazing work and treasured memories built with your beautiful family.
I hope your girls get plenty of use from this beautiful piece.
Your gesso concoction brought back memories of when I used to paint artwork. A mixture of acrylic paint and talcum powder forms a strong rock like bond that would fill in minor dents that you may have missed when filling your piece. I needed to create some texture to a painting once and talcum powder was all I had on hand. That painting is still on my mum’s wall.
Great to see you and your family again. I’m jealous of your hair mate.
Mate, I am extremely grateful for your support and friendship through the years. Luckily, the kids haven't started claiming pocket money for helping in the workshop 🤫.
You a man of many talents, didn't know u painted artwork as well 😉
I have to say that you did a very nice refurbishing...with some help... Thumbs Up!
Thanks for watching 👍
Congratulations
Thanks for watching 👍
Hello guys beautiful restoration beautifully restored good job well done
Thank you very much my friend 👍
Very nice, sympathetic restoration! Well done for keeping all it's original character. 👍🏼👍🏼
Not sure which was funnier: "It's dead" or "I'm getting the boogie out" 🤣🤣🤣
Thank you, my friend. As you know, with every new project, we tend to do things a little bit differently. In this case, preserving this almost antique original paint was of utmost importance. We matched the right shades of colours and touched up every little paint chip. Very time consuming and boring, so didn't show too much of that. The idea was u would look at it and go... well it looks the same ... and that is exactly the point of this kind of restoration 😉👍
@@LittleRestorers At the start, I was hoping you'd go down that path. This was definitely a case of less is more. Too much & it would never be the same, as it is original only once.
I also am a fan of PVA glue & sawdust fillers! I've used it a few times for skirting boards & architrave repairs. Works well. 👍
Top notch restoration, excellent work in all areas. Teaching your girls will keep it going for years. Really enjoyed. your video.
Thanks Dale, appreciate the support 👍
Fantastic restoration! Nifty wood working there buddy. Your skills are really growing. Love that you preserved as much of it's original history as you could and only replaced and repaired what was most needed. The hair brushing..😂
Thank you, George. Yes, this project had it all : Wood, metal, leather, rock star 😉
Very amazing
Thanks for watching 👍
Absolutely beautiful ! Very impressive restoration. I enjoyed every minute of this video. Regards, Bill.
Thank you Bill. Glad you enjoyed it 👍
Geez mate you have excelled again, great restoration and probably the biggest you've taken on, can't wait to see what's next 👍
Mate, you know how it is, those projects you initially think ... Oh, that shouldn't take me too long to do... Then, realise how wrong you were.
And once finished the kids go : Oh it looks the same as before 🤦♂️🤣... Thanks for watching mate, truly appreciate it 👍
just gorgeous....agree with your friend, so glad you kept the original paint...looks amazing!
Thank you so much for watching and leaving a comment 👍
May have to call this a super pony now😊 it sure has hair like my super pony Montana 😁 though he isnt as easy to brush as you were😅... outstanding!
Hahaha... as usual, thanks for taking the time to watch mate. Truly appreciate it 👍😉
Verry nice
Thanks for watching 👍
Wow , a true Restoration . So glad you didn't do much with the paint , what you did do was spot on , that was definitely the way to go , all that originality left ! Everything about this was perfectly done in my opinion.. now it's just a matter of voting for who has the finest locks you or the horse ! 5 star CZcamsr all the way ! 👍👍👍👍👍🐴🐴🐴🐴🐴
Thank you, Jim. Glad you totally get what this restoration was about.
Just a wig mate, in real life, I am bold like you 🤫🤪
@@LittleRestorers Ditto! Would appear there's a Chrome Dome Club developing here! 👍🏼🤣🤣
@KevinD_33x150 Jim knows am just messing with him. Am hoping I still have many years left before joining that club 🤫😁
@@LittleRestorers 👍🤣🤣 Still have all of mine, it just seems to disappear whenever a razor comes too close. 🤣🤣
Same here , have a lot of mine but razor it often , just don't have the monk area ..... @@KevinD_33x150
My father handmade a rocking horse for me in 1953 when I was 3 years old.
He placed it on the rockers of an old rocking chair.
It rode the trails carrying many a child!
Would have been such a cool toy to have.
Thanks for watching 👍
Like father like daughters 💪👍👌

Depending on how old this is, may want to check for lead based paint. Lovely work!
Thanks for watching 👍

superbe!
Thank you 👍

lead paint?
2 stage dust extraction system is sufficient to deal with a few small pieces.
🎠🎠🎠🎠🎠🎠😀😁🤩😍😊❤❤🤗
Thanks 👍 👍👍👍👍
if you want to safe guard it's historical significance, keep the kids off of it. more of a decor piece now. Now the little girl can say she did a lot to help restore this.
Toys are meant to be played with, not locked away 😉
It’s an Asian made reproduction horse, mass produced in Indonesia and Philippines and even India. They have been around in huge quantities since the 1980s
@katiekt3870 Not correct - This one was brought over from Germany decades ago by the original owner.
@@LittleRestorerssorry but someone’s lied to you about its origins. It may have come with the original owner, but it wasn’t made in Germany. These are very very common, and many people are duped into thinking they’re special or old when they have been around since the 80s/90s being mass imported from Asian countries to be passed off as antique. As a collector I have seen hundreds and hundreds of these. I hope you didn’t pay much for it
@@LittleRestorersred flags for reproductions that are easy to notice for someone who is new to rocking horses are are carved saddles/brides instead of leather, boxy “flowerpot” feet
I just don’t get it - you put a huge effort into repairing the wood, metals, and leathers while doing a bare nod to the paint job. It looks like someone took a fat old shaggy pony and tried to dress it up with thoroughbred tack and racing silks. You could see where someone had put scales on it in the past; using that as a pattern with different contrasting colors could have made it into a masterpiece. But to each his own… the wood finish was lovely…
Thanks for watching. There's always a reason for everything. Believe me, there was a lot of work gone into preserving as much as possible. Only a fool would paint over this beautiful original paint 😉
To maintain the vintage look. Not everything has to be restored to shiny and new condition
Lynda knows her fat old shaggy ponies, that muchis clear.
