Every once in awhile, I enjoy building something unique from old furniture scraps. Not only do these pieces fulfill specific needs around my home or shop, but they allow me the opportunity to improve skills that I don't often use. This project tested my woodworking skills, as well as my refinishing skills. I truly hope you enjoy this one. Barry

Watching this episode reminded me of my late father (passed away last year at the age of 89) who always used old furniture pieces to build shelves and tables for his study and other rooms. Although he was a teacher (Latin, Philosophy and Religion) we never had enough money, because he built our house with no own money (so he had to lend it) and with five children (two of them often in hospital) and a wife in very bad health he took what he had to make our home as cozy as he could. He always said, the furniture he built was "brosch", a word for "put together from scrap in a scrappy way", but I loved it. I now inherit his "brosch", looking forward to use these things to build my own furniture for my study and my workshop and my sons and grandson.
Watching your video fills me with _warmhearted love_ for what you do! You are one of the few (of the many many) woodworkers on YT who I really admire! I love your work and your attitude! YOUR work is never "brosch", but _art_ ! Thank you for making my day on this Wednesday morning in Germany! 💚👋

I have an antique sewing machine a lot like that. Mine is a Bartlett, it has a gold chain that lifts the machine out when you open the lid. I still have the bobbin , it looks like a bullet. I love it and its beautiful, still works. I made a quilt on it many years ago. Unfortunately my kids and grandkids don't like anything old. Im hoping to find someone that will appreciate it before I leave this world.

Ah... That treadle sewing cabinet reminds me of my Mom's sewing machine that I used to sew the first dresses I made for myself. It was very hard for me to reach the treadle platform to get the machine working as even today I am only 55 inches tall and I had not finished growing by age 12 when I was already making my own clothes. I still partly earn my living by sewing and had a custom table made with shorter legs so I can reach the electric machine pedal along with a matching short chair to go with it. I love watching your videos as I love to create beautiful things myself. My hands never stop making something whether I work in porcelain, china paints, leathers, silks, or 120 year old laces... I strive for excellence as I see you do in every project. Well, and also I did a lot of furniture stripping and re-finishing as well... love that! I love how your piece turned out right down to your mini-safe! So nice! I really re-lived a lot of my childhood sewing days watching this... Thank you so much!

Barry, this is possibly the best project/video you've done. I've never seen you do a build from disparate parts, so this was quite the treat. I kept wanting to ask you if you had some notes or plans before you started, or whether you did it on the fly. Another part of what made this so interesting is that I couldn't visualize the outcome. When you're refinishing an ugly painted piece, we have a general idea what the finished product will be. But this was watching a wooden puzzle come together, and I loved it. Kudos on the watches; they are elegant. I am so fond of the old sewing machines and have one from my grandmother with the original user's manual and little green box of attachments. You not only saved some gorgeous oak, but have a new treasure of your own. Thank you so much, and cheers from Oklahoma!

Those are really nice watches. The one you picked has that wood which would be less likely to dig into your wrist. Nice. But I liked the blue one best. Have to check that one out.
That is a handy piece of furniture. Thanks

I was worried when you took apart the sewing table that the legs and treadle mechanism were being tossed aside, but NO! Yay, you built it a new top! And, that apothecary cabinet with the old PO Box door - wonderful!!

I really like your 'Frankenfurniture' as much as your restoration projects. So much creativity. I have a collection of old notes and coins from my late husband's old job. In lean times, I've gone to the international cash exchange to see if I could exchange some of it. I try to figure it out before I leave the house, but I've been off by a magnitude of 10 now and then, either getting more or less for what I think I had. I have a big bundle of very much expired and grubby Nigerian bank notes. He was last man out when his company ceased sending techs for Shell Oil in the region. He finally retired after he got tired of being held at the end of AK47s and Kalashnikovs in the bowels of airport terminals being asked in French or Spanish what he had in his equipment bags. Looking at those bank notes brings back all the stories.

Barry that is the coolest thing I have ever seen anybody build. And it turned out beautiful. That is a good imagination you have there to come up with this and make it all work and be so beautiful. Good Job!

Being a lover of antique treadle sewing machines, my heart sank when i saw you taking the table to bits. But i love what you did with it, especially the wee safe. Nice job. 😊

Nicely done, Barry! And great use of what would otherwise end up in the landfill. The "new" chest will live for another 100 years or so.
When I saw that sewing machine stand, it looked like my Mom's Singer that she got from her Aunt as a young girl. In looking at her's, the drawers are almost identical but with a slightly different shape at the front and wood knobs. The one I have actually has a working sewing head, but the gears and bushings are too worn for anything but hidden seams and the belts are about to fall apart. It's a beautiful piece of furniture now having been refinished in the '60s and well kept since.
Thanks for showing what can be done with someone else's trash, and for the trip down memory lane.

These old treadle sewing machines hold a special place in my heart. I used to play with the pedal on my grandmother's machine as a child. While it saddens me to see one dismantled, I'm very glad that you were able to preserve its character and iconic look and incorporated it into your piece. I see you've also found the joy of Bar Keeper's Friend! I love that stuff!

WOW so glad you found another very clever purpose for this iconic piece of furniture. The Singer sewing machine history is fascinating, with women rights and the production across America and Scotland, they made more machines than any other makers put together. Thanks Barry for sharing.

Your creations are ingenues, to say the least. My great grandmother, Hattie Christopher Brewer, had a singer and cabinet just like yours. It sat against a wall in her house in Charleston, S.C. Thank you for showing this remake.
