TR&CI 118: Reconnaissance - Yes, You Can Do That With It (New Mini-Series)

- In this episode of Tough Rules & Cool Interactions, I will be starting a new mini-series dedicated to those individually complex and confusing cards. It's not so much how they interact with another card or mechanic that makes them confusing, but just their own effect is confusing enough. I'm starting off with the card Reconnaissance. Let me know what you all think of this mini-series and hit me with your suggestions of other cards you'd like to see covered in the future.
Intro 0:00
Reconnaissance 0:40
End of Combat Step 1:14
Reminder Text 2:20
Future Episodes 3:19
Conclusion 4:46

One thing I didn't mention in the video, you can still use Reconnaissance on your creatures with actual Vigilance. Even though they're already untapped, when they attack, if they have a tap ability, you can use that tap ability and then use Recon to untap them and use their tap ability a 2nd time.
Cool idea and a great start, Simulacrum also a great one as any of the old cards with gatherer errata or the ones that require understanding layers.
Many of the Judge Tower cards would spawn a spin off of this new series.
Keep it up ! I enjoy these videos immensely.
Kudos from France
One day, I may make a video about Judge Tower. It's a very fun format/deck that people who enjoy this series would likely enjoy a lot.
Ah~ Reconnaissance, one of those "no, reading the card DOESN'T explain the card" cards.
It tries to explain it... But sadly it just doesn't cover all the sneaky stuff.
He's back! Dead Ringers has always been a confusing card. It is worded in a really strange way that makes me have to reread it again and again.
For sure, I have a foil of this card and run it in my Killian, Ink Duelist deck and every time I play it and people read it... They still have no clue what it means.
So glad your back. I couldn't live my life thinking you were gone.
Please, do a video on Ertai's Meddling crazy rules and interactions, that's some wild wording.
Heh, yup. That's a goofy little 'counterspell' that can lead to some weird things.
Oooohhhh, really looking forward to seeing more from this mini series. I can't think of any cards right now, but I looked through the comments and there are some good ones.
Indeed, lots of good cards for future episodes.
Animate Dead just recently got its first ever reprinting and it is in a precon deck. Pretty wild for a card as confusing as it is. Might be worth explaining just for all the new players that buy the deck.
Ah, good point. That is a card that is a mess when you're reading it.
I will say even if it went directly from combat damage to main phase two you could still do this because there'd be a round of priority before the phases change. You'd have to end combat at the blockers phase and have damage be an effect of moving to main phase two.
Yup. Back when Rconnaissance was printed the game didn't actually have the Stack, it used a system called the Batch. Things were weird back then.
Good example of "Reminder text isn't rules text", sort of like how Extorts reminder text doesn't affect the cards colour identity.
Oh man, I have to explain that to players all the time.
Yeah, you can mention to people why the cards text box looks different on Temple of Abandon versus a land like Sheltered Thicket that actually has the land types and therefore it has the remind text in parenthesis and italics for listing the tap to add R or G, and in certain versions of those cards like the extended arts they don't have the reminder text at all.
Yes I knew about this effect I actually exploit this in my Iroas, God of Victory deck, I cast a mass damage effect during combat to prevent my creatures from dying. And if I see a creature that too big to kill that way I will wait for that exact moment after combat damage has been delt to get that blocking damage in as well
Ah, very sneaky. Get some extra combat damage in and then any creatures that blocked and survived will be killed by your damage spell, you're creatures are still safe cause they're in combat and Iroas is protecting them, and then finally you pull them out of combat. Very nice trick.
If your critter has first strike it can deal damage and then you can pull them back before the defending hits back.
Indeed, a very powerful synergy with Recon.
Very cool new series. Looking forward to seeing more.
Looks like a lot of people are liking it, so should have more in the future.
I vote for Goblin Game
Good vote!
Illusionary Mask, i still don't kbow what this card does.
Oh, good one. Doesn't see much play in Commander and possibly because people just don't know what it actually does.
Hey man, sorry if I was out of line replying to that one guy on Demo's video. It just made me pretty mad that he'd reply that way to someone just trying to help people out.
Ha! That is all good. I appreciate you trying to maybe talk some sense into the person, but that's all good. I don't expect this channel to grow all that fast, it's currently just covering a very niche subject matter. If it people want to check it out and learn more about Magic rules, then that's great and I hope it helps them out in their games, but if not, then I'm sure they'll still enjoy their games. They make some errors and such, but that's all part of learning too.
