    Doing hard things is easy when you realise what the payoff is. I run. It's hard. The payoff is the endorphins and the knowledge that it's good for my long term health. Also sometimes hard stuff isn't hard - it's all about what's going on in your brain. A few years ago I did an 81 mile run in 3 days and it was easy - because in my mind at the start of the run I'd prepared physically and psychologically and knew that it was a done deal.

    • @BusinessWolf1
      @BusinessWolf1 Před rokem +1

      Wanna know something funny? The frontal lobe of the brain is responsible for long term rewards and consequences. ADHD means that is ikmensely underdeveloped, and anyone with adhd is forced to somehow shrink the time horizon of everything they do down to the same day in order to feel anything about the task.

    • @117Industries
      @117Industries Před rokem +1

      @@BusinessWolf1 I didn’t know this about ADHD, but this sounds about right.
      But while ADHD is a massive nuisance for those who suffer from it, can you see a benefit in this?
      For example, ADHD peoples, given that narrow time horizon for rewarding feelings, are incentivised to seek rewards from the imminence of an activity rather than the deferred feelings of gratification from completion. So they’re pushed towards finding pleasure in the moment, and perhaps by extension pushed towards the eternal present, or _eternal now_ .

    • @silverlake973
      @silverlake973 Před rokem +1

      @@117Industries I see where you're coming from, but I think ADHD means impatience is at the core of someone with this condition. Being present requires immense patience and perpetual letting go. I think seeking such short term release only prevents one from being truly present.

    • @117Industries
      @117Industries Před rokem

      @@silverlake973 Okay. I’ll take you at this because I’m no expert in the condition. Although I vaguely remember that impatience is supposed to be at the core of it- according to the Huberman videos I’ve been binging on for some time now.
      It reminds me of an Eckhart Tolle video I watched too, in which he states that an inability to be truly present and a constant need to escape the present (or to be anywhere else other than the present moment) are both symptoms of a deep dysfunction which affects very many of us right now. And what he said resonated with me. There does seem to be a restlessness within people which is harmful and contagious, and that restlessness seems to be drawing people’s attention _from_ the moment rather than _to_ it.
      I guess it boils down to the fact that someone can’t be in two places simultaneously. So you’re either present, or not.

      I agree. The pathway to less suffering is through suffering…
      And when you begin to walk down this path; the path of bearing your suffering nobly, and accepting the responsibility to confront that with courage, dignity and truth…
      the conclusion or the end of that road will always lead you back to Christ...
      Why? Because the story of the crucifixion is the ultimate expression of that truth brought to its logical conclusion.
      I mean, If you took on all the responsibility you could take on, and you faced everything you needed to face… What would you be like? Who would you be? and how would the world transform around you?
      If the partial answer is, well if I do that a little bit, things get a fair bit better. Then the next question might be: well what if you did that completely?
      It isn’t obvious to me what the upper limit of that is. And when you see people bear their suffering nobly, there is nothing in that but Good… that’s something.
      And then when you see people take on more responsibility and decide that they’re going to aim up, and confront their suffering honestly and forthrightly; that their lives get better and the lives of people around them get better too.
      That is why the pathway to less suffering is through suffering.
      It’s like well, there is suffering. How do you make it worse? You run away. How do you make it better? You confront it.
      You might say yeah, but it’s suffering. Well yeah it’s there… It exists. But it’s a precondition for life or something like that.
      And it’s like you have something important to do as well, and you confront it, and that’s the path to transcending it.
      So Imagine that acceptance of vulnerability and ignorance is the precondition for growth…
      Imagine that confrontation with the terrible unknown - with its paralyzing manifestations of tragedy and malevolence is necessary to catalyze both wisdom and maturity…
      Imagine finally, that human consciousness plays some central, and as of yet poorly understood role in the reality of the cosmos; at least as necessary observer.
      Imagine all of that, then ask yourself: what is the absolute hypothetical limit of human attainment when vulnerability and ignorance are fully and completely accepted? When the unknown is squarely confronted? and when consciousness is given its due at the very center of the world?
      That’s Christ’s acceptance of the crucifix. That’s his willingness to be betrayed subject to the evil of his closest companions and the state; and his embrace of brokenness and death.
      It is pure truth that even a small leaving of humility and courage engenders resilience, progress, and growth.
      It is pure truth that resentful rejection of the price of finite being multiplies suffering endlessly and unnecessarily.
      What is the ultimate expression of those truths taken to their final conclusion? Who is to say who we are, and what we might be capable of achieving if we develop the courage to accept our terrible fates, live in truth, and stumble uphill? This is the question posed by Christianity in its very essence.

    7:40 - Alex and Chris say it's easy to win, and they're correct - it's easy to win when you're already an attractive masculine male. I think Chris and Alex are great guys compared to almost everyone else, but they've never truly suffered - The problems of their life have always been limited to emotional self worth and the free-market. That's the missing piece here - the increased complexity of changing the expression of genetics - which these guys have never had to accomplish. That's the hard part, that's what suffering is, apart from physical 3rd world conditions and torture.

      @@adolfotibana2810 Well there's a limit to human experience, so if we assume they were abused or severely neglected (Alex has said he was suicidal), I still view that as less suffering than being born small and ugly or with a disability/in a 3rd world country/North Korea.
