I remember I was never able to play MK2 with sound on my 486 DX2 for some reason.

The legendary PC "compatibility" lol. I was a PC tech back in those days and this among many other issues were common.

It played just fine with sound and @60FPS on my 1st PC a 486DX-4 100MHZ back in the day around 1996. I still remember when a mate brought the floppy disks at my house and installed it, I was shocked of how good it looked compared to AMIGA port that I had been playing 2 years earlier!

SNES version really looks very smooth compared to other home ports. It's like the sprites are anti aliased. Also the shadows are transparent! Even the arcade version doesn't have transparent shadows. If only it had higher res assets and more sprite animations.
Edit: Oh wow the Playstation 1 version has transparent shadows too and also longer shadows like the arcade version! So that's even better.

first played on Amiga, then on PC and at that time we never noticed any difference between ports (as 13 yo) now we have tons of comparations and even 8 bits ports (where is tiger electronic port :P :P :P )
ps1 looks like great port, saturn even better but... on ps2 arcade treasures - there is no shadows! wtf :)

Saturn port is actually botched due to sound issues. Too bad.

So, what's the best way to play MK2 on PC now? MAME?

Good video! The Midway Arcade Treasures differs however: MAT2 on GameCube has a lot of slow downs and the PSP version of MAT:EP runs at 30fps in game. You also missed the PSN PS3 version and Arcade Kollections also differ a little bit as I've mentioned here: czcams.com/video/SzwHShJ5JaI/video.html

The Amiga version of MORTAL KOMBAT II
    looks and sounds awesome 😺👍🕹️.
Me and my old neighbour played this game on his old Super Nintendo everyday, when we were teenagers back in the mid 1990's 😹👍🕹️🕹️.
And i have the original Arcade version of this
game for my PlayStation 2 in a compilation
    called MIDWAY ARCADE TREASURES 2.
    😺👍🕹️🕹️
