Have you made any changes to your bike to get it lighter or better for cross-country riding? let us know 👇
Nah.
It's gotten more heavy.
Yes i have done that is almost 100% modded only the fork and frame stock brake calipers are still stock Orbea Alma H20
my newer other xc bike is closer to stock.
i ride on rims
So far car only Carbon one piece handelbar+stem+Carbon 30 mm wheelset whit my newer Orbea Alma M30
I'm 100+ lbs overweight. My time, money and effort are better spent on making myself lighter than my bike. I can eat less, save money AND make the total weight of me and my bike lighter - no upgrades can compete with that weight to cost benefit.
Yeah
Please don't become lighter than your bike 😬
@@sorwrang I think that'd require a body-ectomy.
As a heavy rider myself I tend to favour mods that will make my bike stronger
Just keep riding 💪
Finally going back to xc bike from the overhyped gravel bikes...
Chain waxing is incredible! It just goes on and on without dirt sticking to the chain and making a grinding paste as it does with lubes.
...anytime someone uses the word "faff" it means they don't have a clear understanding of the subject matter.
Buy a kitchen scale.
Start measuring your daily calorie intake.
Drop excess body weight.
You're welcome.
Preach!
Also, have a pre race poo.
@@alan_davis gotta have a nervous poo!
Anything which is going to add durability to the drive train is worth a look. Thank you 👍
The bontrager drop lock is an all in one it cleans up cockpit right up and puts the leavers in the proper spot .
+1! Have one on order
I don't XC, but have been waxing chains for 3 decades -- with PTFE and florinated wax no less --- I save the shavings from when I wax my skis and snowboards all winter and that goes on my bike chains early Spring and it seems to work for about 6 months... I re-wax my chain before early winter mud season.
You kinda skipped over the things other than yourself that are usually the heaviest. Crankset, wheels, cassette, and fork. Saving 200g on a cassette or cranks can be a bargain as $/g when you compare it to the price of silly Ti bolts and seatpost binders.
I would love to see a video working up the $/g efficiency of upgrades say SLX/GX to affordable light options like E13 HelixR cassette or NextR cranks.
xx1 cassette is worth the price (on sale) due to the unsprung mass. GX is fine everywhere else.
Great video! More of this, please.
I changed aluminum wheels for carbon wheels and lowered the weight of my rig by 600g. Feels more lively too.
Making your bike as light as possible doesn’t compensate anywhere near as much as making yourself as light as possible does. Losing weight and gaining fitness are the more reliable options, but there are other more extreme items like ears and pinkies that not only add weight, but also increase drag. Lopping them off can really be a weight savings!
Finally, some accurate information about chain waxing. Keep it up.
I made my carbon XC sub 10kg.
MORE XC CONTENT !!!
Preferably AFFORDABLE XC 😆
Swapped the tires out for Vittoria’s, grips changed for lighter ones, rental carbon bars, hope stem, new lighter forks and lighter saddle. Just need to ditch the shimano wheels and hubs for something lighter.
Now, be honest, can you measure any of the weight saving on the course? To my eye (and I'm now in my 10th season of XC racing) those let's say 200 grams saved make noticible difference only in your wallet 😅 - if it really made a big difference, why would pretty much everyone in the World Cup field race on full-sus instead of 1.5kg lighter hardtails?
I’ve got my 2015 fullsus Epic down to 18 pounds with pedals.
Not a pro or anything close, but if I were to get ceramic bearings, I'd prioritize freehub bearings over irrelevant and expensive oversized jockey wheels and stuff like that. Changing the bearings in my freehub to higher quality steel ones wasn't just a gimmick, it was definitely noticeable, specially on the descents.
I see a real difference with dropper post (you'll not go back once you try this), Barzo tires (need that additional Grip, I have Barzo on the front and Mezcal in the rear) and Chain Wax (It is so much better chain stays clean even after several muddy rides/races) even at my dad level skills
Center lock vs six bolt weight. I might not be wrong by saying that six bolt hub is heavier.
Great vid, what’s with the intense transition music tho? It’s a tech video 😂
bigger chainring?
plz more xc content 😊
2.1 Schwalbe Thunder Burts and keep your fingers crossed it doesn't rain! Haha
Unless you are at peak fitness, I'd save my money and work on myself rather than my bike. Of all the things mentioned, I'd get a power meter. Since I got my Quarq spider meter it has transformed my rides in terms of understanding how and where I'm putting down power, where I can / should do more, etc. As a data junky it has had more impact on my fitness and riding speed than any number of Ti bolts.
Good tips, but you forgot to include "For Pros" or put this in the Tech channel.
Quite a bit of XC content lately. Perhaps rope in Si and Dan from GCN and bring them back to their XC roots?
Hi! more XC content please!
Does any manufacturer make deep section 29" mtb wheels? Aero (instead of weight) 😊
No, they're too stiff and as its mountain biking, they're not suitable as they catch all the sidewinds (which normally wouldn't be a problem) also the price of them (as carbon fibre) would be ridiculously high.
In the past (90's I think) there were aero wheels which basically looked like TT wheels on MTB's and they weren't great.
will all those hours on the saddle. (extra lightweight saddle) will anahilate your hog?
I only ride 1-2 hours top because of this.
not massively unless you have a bad chamois.
What make Is the pink jacket Anna is wearing please I would like one!
Danise HGC SHELL LIGHT WMN
@@_Inferis thank you
Ceramic Bearings are only an upgrade for the vendor that sold them to you.
CARBON FIBER WHEELS YES PLEASE
Specially the 9th Wave Ninefold Yarrow SL Ultimate (just 1 kilogram for the wheelset! 😱) but it costs 3400€ 😂😂😂
removing paint to save 150 GRAMS? really?
Most people could easily lose a few kgs off their bodies before spending big $$$ to save a few hundred grams. Always makes me cringe to see overweight people on super expensive, ultralight bikes.
2:46 i wanna see the proof a grip shifter is lighter than a lever assembly
This is kind a funny video
There are may good ideas here but right upgrades are very specific to each bike, rider, and primary use. I tend to evaluate grams saved to general cost for upgrades. Heaviest items tend to be the wheel set and drive train. But these also are the bigger costing items. XC traditionally did not include dropper posts which adds a good deal of weight. Dopper is sweet though if wieght is less a concern. Before getting tocrazy with upgrades, just make sure you are happy with the overall fit and the new changes dont mess this up.
The music between the sequences is really annoying! Makes the pretty good video into a “hope it won’t last too long but it’s still too interesting”
I was trying to lower the volume between each segment. Super annoying 'music'.😬😬😬
The real “pro” tips are:
(1) Brand new tires for every race
(2) Brand new bottom bracket for every race with grease and seals removed to minimize friction
(3) Brand new derailleur pulley wheels for every race
(4) Brand new stripped chain for every race
(5) A private mechanic to strip everything down and clean/service everything to perfection for every race
The Rock shox SID Fork has a grip shift option. You can lock out both suspension with it. So it’s not really a trick. 😅
Yep, SC Blur XC ships with it... not a "hack".
How about the fork ? How about driving without a suspension frok and just with normal fork
That can be useful on tarmac, but in the forrest, it will slow you down
years ago i had xc mtb whit a Rigid Carbon fork that work fine
Hi
Ti does not save 60%. maybe versus iron....
Correct. Ti is 44.6% lighter than a typical steel. (Please don't use Al for disc bolts...)
is that only about show off upgrades ??? I guess ...
Why striping paint voids warranty? it does nothing to the frame integrity.
It’s not quite that simple. If all you did was remove the paint, you’d be right but there are things you could do that could compromise the frame’s integrity. Chemical stripping can attack a carbon/epoxy frame if you do it wrong, mechanical methods like sanding or shotblasting can remove frame material and aluminium frames can suffer badly from corrosion if you take off the paint. No manufacturer is going to offer warranty cover over something they cannot control.
Agree with most of the things, but ceramic speed stuff is literal SCAM out of your hard earned cash, doesn't last and costs a small fortune1
I get the lightest XC frame I can, and run the course with it. I put it on my back. Works super well
Light weight wheels….
Thought I accidently clicked on gcn
As much as I love your content I think XC should have it's separate space, closer to road cycling..
I mean seriously, stripping your paint to save 150g before considering a haircut and aerodynamics gains of shorter bars... wow... that's F1 stuff.
I replay Blake's hardtail advice over and over, but fast forward or skip this gram saving stuff all together.
Just my 2 Bob 😊
Oh no here we go with handlebars getting shorter again😂
13:13 - no, you can't... thats not science.
If your running 3 bolts on your brake rotor you better have shaved every hair on your body and head off. Could have saved at least ten times the weight and had your breaks still be properly attached.
This guy is so monotone 😒
Shilling for Ergon I see...
they're sponsored
The only upgrade to XC you need is to the XC part. Do some proper riding.
sORRY, not a fan of this new presenter
Xc is shoyt 😅
Offroadies
@@flashman2008 that's a more diplomatic way to describe it ,I'll borrow that one 😊
Elite level enduro riders respect elite xc riders because of the skill it takes to ride lightweight bikes through the terrain they do at a racing pace. It's usually only overbiked wannabes that leave these type of comments.
@theymademepickaname1248 ha ha your one 🤭🤭🤭🤭
