I Raced XC Without Any Training! | Here's What Happened

- Entering any race can seem daunting, so we set out to see if you need to be at peak performance to even consider entering. For this, we needed a guinea pig, someone who hasn't ridden a bike in months and in his own words is 'well rested'. Jack has conquered clips, defeated Downhill and embarrassed Enduro. Now it's time for him to tackle XC, with no training and very little knowledge on fueling will he be able to complete 3 gruelling laps in 2 hours?

I’ve raced for years 55 now and a friend of mine that’s a gym rat told me I couldn’t get a workout like he can at the gym. I told him if he went on a work out ride with me on a local trail and found it to be easy I would start going to the gym with him, after he made it two miles I never had to go to the gym with him. Now he rides a good bit. He couldn’t believe the work out.
Big difference between endurance and strength anyone that rides should be lifting bone density goes dh quick starting at30
I do work out in my basement gym. But my point was a gym will never give you a full workout like riding mountain bikes. Especially a single speed in a real Hilly area. lol he said he was sore in places he didn’t realize you even use on a bike.
@@carlkeese6620 agree to disagree all depends on your program but I love riding bikes 🤘🏻carry on
Yea! I’m 52M and have done some gravel and XC racing. Been riding since 2011! Eating and training! Love to be on the bike! I’m now the FFG in my area! The riders 50+are by far the fastest where I live! Can’t wait to start racing XC with the 24 Supercaliber 9.9 XO that I just picked up! Let’s go! 🤙🏻
I remember sitting on the line of my first XC race, chatting about pace. An experienced had said you just "go off the start at your absolute maximum possible.... And then just maintain that for an hour and a half" 😂
I'd like to see Jack race again after a proper training regiment!
I did a race in 1994 without any training, I came 25th out of 50 ,when I was 40 ,what an amazing experience, 🤘👍
Hears a thought... GMBN/Play Sports Group/Discovery organise some events and really open up MTB to people.
T-shirt and shorts in this cold wether?? Everyone else had their longer ones equiped - Jack is our hero today!!! Very much well done!!! Had been fun to know the average heart rate and max heart rate - and how he felt the day after.
Completely agree. A professional analysis of his physical condition as he progressed through the race would be great.
Then, when he does it again after some training to get him ready, do it all again and show the before and after!
It's fascinating to understand it all as some days riding the same route, my heart rate is way up, others it's mid to high but not bouncing off my limiter!
Well done Jack, great effort!
he looks the best too. those spandex ass clothes are horrible looking
More XC content GMBN. Love it. Awesome job Jack.
I enjoyed that so much -watched it twice😊 Well done Jack and Isaac! How about some videos of Isaac coaching Jack to prepare for his next race?
GMBN - buy the poor sausage some gloves and glasses for Pete's sake! Seriously well done Jack!
That was inspiring. Well done Jack and Isaac. Thank you
I never tried XC racing. Hoping to be joining on one.
Lots of love, cheers, & Mabuhay, from my end--the Philippines! #RideOn #KeepBiking
I did the 3hr race. Tough course even if fit. The little climb by the fence was much harder than it looked, hurt a fair bit at the end.
Great video, fun to watch! Jack don't be embarrassed of the falls because you got out there and did it regardless and you killed it! Mad respect.
Great effort. I enjoyed watching this race. Hope he does more in the future 🚴♂️
Great effort boys. The first rule is to keep it fun, because when you're having fun, it's easier to get things done.
Great effort by Jack. not easy to go all out when you haven't trained properly. Plus, that type of terrain, wet dirt covered with wet leaves is nasty of XC tires. nice job. but as someone who lives surrounded by Olympic mountains and living on a hill with decent steep climb, getting around 180 meters of elevation after 20k is so weird :D. hopefully we'll see more of Jack on some XC tracks, with some training and guidance from Isaac and Rich. might be a video or two "XC prep for beginners" or something like that.
Loved the hug after the race and the fact Jake went in Just shorts and a T shirt.
Good video,music was perfect,
Nice p.o.v footage,
Best of all keeping ye kept the sale pitch on the Orbea bike's to a minimum ...
More videos like this please 🙏👍
Jack the cameraman is a terrific guy. Really enjoyed meeting him in Bentonville.
Gaaf filmpje jongens! Ik heb laatst mijn wielen tubeless gemaakt en het is fijn om te zien dat ik een hoop van de tips die hier gegeven worden zelf al heb toegepast.🎉 Nog steeds erg tevreden. Blijf zo doorgaan!
Well done,Jack! Hope to see you race more on the channel!
That looked brutal. Good job!
Would definitely like to see him race again. Maybe even get like a "battle of the presenters" thing going on where these two plus Neil, Blake and Rich do an XC race and an enduro or DH race.
That's only just up the road from me, I've been looking for what to race over winter, see you on the line at the next one
I don’t think Nino will be worried just yet 😅 . Well done 👍
Big respect to u buddy 👌
You are a great sport Jack, and you are a great also in front of the camera.
After watching this, all I can think about is that Sunday Roast...hmmmm......Ha !
Really love the “Jack rides” videos
I do a couple of races a year here around Girona, Spain in the OPEN category. You should come to Girona next year in October to do the La Tramun, Singletrack Marathon. It will be the best mtb experience of your life!
Man Id love to try this!
You should enter Jack into a bike trial competition. Either South coast bike trial or the bike trials academy. No special bike needed, a hardtail would be perfect for the beginner categories. Take Martyn along too, he'd love it!
I remember my first Mtb race very well , a snowy British national at Sherwood pines , maybe not the best first race with lack of training and fitness 😂 well done Jack
I would suggest find a loop at your level and leave the bike in one gear that is not too easy. Ride the loop as often as you can and look for opportunities to maintain momentum and conserve energy.
This was really wholesum
What is the Garmin mount at 2:23 please? I have been looking at one that shape for my Canyon CP008 cockpit for years ?
Come try the iCup XC races in Southern Utah! 🤘
Porridgepot Hill Near Deepcut. Great area for biking when allowed to by the Military!
it looks tough
I think Jack should go in for the London to Brighton Off Road 2024! Not a race and some training will be required. 🤘
What Garmin mount is he using? Looks super sano
come down to Australia for the Convict100 in May
I entered a few XC races with a very hard n serious attitude back in the 1990's before discovering you could enter as amateur to DH events, didn't had much fun. Now as an adult I can bring my 30lbs trail bike to an XC race and laugh my ass off.
It's insane you could keep speaking with heart rates in the 180s!
Probably incorrect measurement from the wrist or something like that.
I live in Kirkland Washington.
our ferns Stay Green year-round so different .
XC racing humbles everyone their first race or 2. The amount of steady endurance training is what counts. Lots of road bike in ZONE 2 to build that endurance engine, with some HITT training 1x a week. It takes a couple of seasons to get really conditioned to race EX and learn when to push and when to recover etc. Been racing XC since 2011 and my first local race was a lot of humble pie. LOL.
Shorts and T-shirt 🤯
Well done guys great effort.Jack great result given no training, heart rate was off the charts.
Well done looked bloody freezing haha
Well done! Curious if you can race on any bike or is it XC only
There are no bike restrictions.
Ride whatever as long as there's no motor. It's actually badass when someone shows up on a non-traditional bike and does well.
I love seeing guys with $5k legs tearing it up on a $1.5k bike.
Jack is the only one in the whole field dressed like a human
24h Finale Ligure or 24h MTB Rad am Ring!
Another episode of "all the gear, no idea"? :)
As good as your content is…nut please bring GMBN auf deutsch back!!!
Give jack a 6 week plan of 3 sessions a week in the new year and put him in a similar race. Be interesting to see how much that level of reasonable/average commitment has on performance, don’t you think?
Rotors were freezing 🥶 but the engine overcooked 😂
What was the crack drink?! Lol
4:20 Warm-up with 170 bpm!
in this episode POOOOW!!! Jack is tryin' to kill himself POOOOW!!! by some kind of miracle he fails to do so POOOW! while I admire the dedication it looked terryfying.
That definitely reminded me of XC racing before I discovered enduro: every fun bit just being held up by a giant queue of dawdling roadies with half of them getting off, only for them to storm off on the fire roads 😂
hey dont be rude to us roadies trying our best, lol :D
Jack would have crushed it if he had proper kit on 😅
Or the West Branch mountain bike race in Ohio and Ravenna
Once you go pro in XC the fun fades away. It is just work, work, work, and mega pukefest to get to the podium.
"it's all about the vibes..."
straight in with the recovery drink...
...if you ask me, the only viable option for something to be called "recovery drink" is beer...
didnt even sweat
There is a big difference in can you and should you, Can you Absolutely, should you Absolutely not.
What is XC?
Train him up as an xc race whippet.
Doesn’t look too mucky at Swinley.
Peloton training is all you need for an XC race anyway.
Yeah peloton is great for bike handling skill!
@@_Inferis We are talking XC here, handling skills is too strong of a term for this discipline. Lots of leg and cardio endurance yeah, of course.
@@EK-xk7ztThis is not a great take. Go Google "xco world championships 2023 course photos" and check out some of the obstacles these guys are riding and at insane speeds and on 'low' travel race bikes.
No lycra? This isnt xc.
Train XC 30 miles 4 DAYS a week on different terrain and you'll be mid pack in no time.
Come to United States in Ohio in Columbus and do the Mohican 100 I think you're looking at a thousand or more feet of elevation
without any training anything up to 45 min in a bike would be top
Unfortunately he's completely underdressed in shorts and a t-shirt. Probably lost quite a lot of power just trying to maintain body temperature.
Think he was struggling to regulate rather than maintain! That engine runs hot! 🥵
@@irfuel sure, he's really pushing it, don't get me wrong. Heat management is extremely important and I know how uncomfortable it is to be too hot. However several studies show, that cold temperatures and its power loss cannot be fully compensated due to high intensity exercise, which might have lead to a slightly more comfortable feeling - if that's possible when nearly having to throw up :D
Here are some studies on the topic: "The Effect of Cold Exposure on Exercise Performance" by Nettersheim et al. (2017); "The Effects of Cold Ambient Temperature on Muscle Function and Exercise Performance" by Chen et al. (2015) and "The Influence of Cold Exposure on Exercise Performance and Thermoregulatory Responses in Elite Alpine Skiers" by Nedergaard et al. (2008).
Paybe next time don't dress like yoi're going to the beach either! 😂😂😂 Good effort though.
Please don't keep your thumbs on the same side as the rest of your fingers on your grips. Otherwise it might get nasty.
and you are absolutely sure you need a GPS on your handle bar on a 2 hour XC race ???
It certainly helps, you can monitor heart rate and power, time (which is needed in this race because there is a time cutoff), timer for pacing and laps. Not actually using the gps though¿¿¿
nothing like the taste of blood in your mouth xDD
