John out standing video on cleaning taps and dies. I like how throughly you explain each step. I wish I knew half of what you have forgotten on the topics you show us !!
About 12 years ago, I had a wood burning stove, and had relatives with a toddler come to visit. They were concerned about the toddler touching the wood burner. I explained that he would touch it a maximum of once. Which he did. Just once.
I thought I learned a lot about Tap and Dies in you previous videos. But again you provided some very insightful information. Thanks for the great video.
They really shined up new! I love the 50/50 petroleum jelly mineral oil mix. Its great on my pocket knives. Ive done good with the Harbor Freight storage boxes. They use an interlocking hinge but creased latches though.
Great video again Scout, I find adding a piece of lightly oiled terry towelling over bare metal pieces like taps & dies ect really helps keep the rust at bay because it stops the moisture in the air settling on the metal. Cheers mate, Stuart 🇦🇺

I don’t know how long it took for those taps and dies to get done but the result was great. I’d like to see how you wind up storing them. And…that ending!
Thanks for that John, I have many many old taps & dies from various family members that certainly need some attention and organising, Lord knows when I'll have the time to do it, but this will be my reference when I do !
Another great lesson I had no idea about the cutting edge vs the trailing edge of taps but all makes sense now 👌 and also a great message at the end of the video and let’s hope thing’s don’t get too bad
This is spot on as I have a bunch of taps and dies that need some drydock time. Hope the meeting went well. Not a problem for me out here on the farm. Stay safe...captjack...
Dull taps or any dull cutting edge for that matter, will reflect light back at you as well as feel dull right on the edge itself, and need to look closely, Very good tutorial on the care of taps and dies sir, enjoyed it very much. Thanks for the video sir.
Epic ending John!!! That black and white clip looked like it was from "Frankenstein". But when you said we need to go in to the Capitol, that was just perfect! Glad I wasn't drinking any thing at the time it , I probably would have spit it out. Great ending!
Great video. Very educational. Yesterday was my flea market day. You are a bad influence. I bought my fourth vice. Absolutely no use for it. I also bought a hot plate. Now I can finally melt my p.jelly and mineral oil together. Last Thursday I bought a 50/50 container. I had asked the wife if I could do that on the stove with one of her good pans. Her look spoke volumes. If you sell everything in your attic you can move upstate. Good luck. Great video. Thank you.
The hot plate is really a good thing to have. Just be careful and go slowly because some fluids have a flashpoint when heated so if you see it starting to smoke remove from heat- A really good way is to use the double boiler method where you heat up your mixture in a pan of hot water. A old tin can makes a great mixing pan for oils. 😃👍
John, I only have one tap and die set set..Crazy I know! I bet you could find a cool old box to restore for those or maybe make a custom one. You are right these times are crazy in the world so I'm glad you are using your voice to try to make changes. I don't think you could have found a more flattering picture of me🤣🤣
George- Nobody worked harder on a military pick-axe than you did- I had to laugh because I have been there many times you were so hot and beat up after the restoration you just said- “ 0:03 Enough on this project” and closed up shop for the day. You did such a great job on the Pickaxe! 😃👍
Hi John. Really informative. Goes to show you are never to old to learn. I have been cleaning tapes all wrong for so many years now. Thanks for sharing. You sure did a great job on yours. Praying you can make the right decision at your meeting. God bless. Have a great weekend. 👍👍❤🙏...
Nice job! I bought a tool box full of old taps and dies at a flea market last year. Lots of fun to clean up. My shed is insulated, airconditioned, and heated. Great place to spend time doing stuff like that even though we are in the upper 90s here in Arkansas.
@@ScoutCrafter It is 12'×24'. The shed was $4K delivered. Insulation, paneling, electrification, and shelving pushed it past $10K. Well worth every penny!
Oh boy we here in Auckland, New Zealand could do with some of that warmness weather! We are so over the constant heavy heavy rain downpours & the flooding & all out cold below 0 degrees C mornings....
Don't tell anyone, but you can often resharpen taps off-hand with a bench grinder. Unlike the worn tap John showed, most tap wear is on the leading teeth of the tap because they do the bulk of the metal removal. You need a medium grit grinding wheel with a sharp corner (something you should work to maintain on all your grinding and finishing 3m pad type wheels). Use the wheel to undercut the leading edges and restore the sharp cutting edge. If badly worn or chipped, grind the end of the tap to remove the damage. Recut the fluting and grind a new lead taper for the tap. Relieve the tap cutting teeth flanks just like you would when resharpening a twist drill. The goal is to duplicate the grind on a new tap. If you are concerned about the job you did, try the tap on something soft like Aluminum to see if it cuts satisfactorily. You'll be surprised that it isn't too difficult to get a good result. Now when you see an old tap at a yard or estate sale you will know that if only the lead teeth appear dull or damaged you can easily restore it to useful condition. Cheers from NC/USA
@@ScoutCrafter Once you've done it you see that sharpening at tap is easier than sharpening a twist drill. It is like sharpening an involute gear cutter where only the face of each tooth is ground so as to preserve the cutter profile. You don't have to create equal cutting edges, correct angles, or correct compound curve relief on a tap. Anything smaller than 1/4" or 6mm takes some care to sharpen, but small taps are so inexpensive it's not worth the trouble even in the home shop.
Great video👍 What a great video on how to clean those taps and dies. Awesome job!👍I like the jig you made for cleaning the outside surfaces of the die with a wire brush. When you finish soaking the dies in oil ,Do you wipe them down real good & also apply the 50/50 mineral oil/vaseline mix to them also or do you just soak them in oil?? That was a great idea 💡 with the little piece of wood to clean out those taps that may have a little more stubborn pieces of dirt or gunk on the cutting threads 👍. Those boxes with the hinges are nice to have for stuff like that. You may find some on Amazon maybe??🤔I think Harbor freight makes some boxes similar to that but I am not sure. Another great shot of Old Glory 🇺🇸 flying in the breeze . Well again great video and can’t wait to see what you do on Monday. Have a great evening and hope you have a fantastic weekend. 😀👍👍
Steven- yes, I soaked the dies in light oil in a zip lock so all the threads would be coated then I took them out and wiped them off. Now Vaseline and mineral oil mix for storage. 😃👍
Nice information. I just picked up three old sets at an auction that I need to clean up. My biggest complaint is the change from wood boxes to metal then plastic. I have an 80 year old set in a good wood box that just needs to be cleaned and it's perfect. the metal ones are always smashed and rusted, the plastic at the very least have broken hinges. That wooden box is the way and I think I will make a small set in wooden box for my truck tool box.
If you mak a wooden tap box, send John some photos or even a video to share. What would be nice is for someone to make a pattern and use one of those fancy CNC woodcutters. Probably already done. I often pick up older wooden box sets of taps, they are neat.
Hi John, What a great tap and die tutorial. I have a box of taps and dies that look the same as yours. Now I know how to get these back into service. Do you use food grade vinegar, or cleaning vinegar which I think is 30%. I’m sure this took you a bit of time to get through all of these. Great tap tooth cleaner in the wood. Nice job on the tap and dies. I mixed up a big quantity of the 50-50 (Both Types) an I love them. Btw, I use to have one of those Uncle Fester light bulbs. Remember those? At the end of the video, I almost started yelling FED! FED!
JOhn, go into the fishing section of Wally Woyld or wherever and look at the PLANO tackle boxes. You ought to be able to find something to hold the taps and dies there. I keep all my impact and Dremel fittings in a 6 compartment lure holding thing. And 2-cycle gas and a nylon or brass brush works wonders with taps and dies and leaves a little oil behind. Hey, my friend. You said, "I'm gonna show you what we do to clean ..." You know, I'm not sure all your viewers are aware that you have years of professional shop experience. You've done the trial and error the rest of us won't have to go through as long as we learn to trust people like you with the experience. From other comments, it's clear that others around the world do recognize this as well as your videographer talents. Keep up the good work!
I was stubborn, I always had to touch the iron (learn the hard way).. but it makes for a lasting impression... Dad always said, don't go out with a woman that has a deeper voice than you.. I should have listened to dad... S.C. another great video as always... Take care, see you Monday...
Some really cool information about the taps the evapo rust is a great product Man they have to sort out that border bring back 45 he will sort it out the only Man that gave a dam in this climate god bless take care 👍🇺🇸🙏🗽🇳🇿🦅🪖🏛️45
I would understand if your constantly wire wheeling taps. But will one time dull it out? I would think multiple passes would dull it. I used to wire wheel them when I was younger lol
The taps are hard and meant to cut metal, I can't see how running flexible thin wires of a fine wire wheel is going to do any harm..............I've used wire wheels on my taps, drill bits and files and have never had a problem, obviously I'm talking a fine wire wheel and a gentle touch.
I used to think the same exact thing! I even bought a special Brass wire wheel just for doing such work however at high rpm’s the wires of the brush will definitely dull hard steel. For most applications you might never notice it but Taps and Dies need to be very sharp not to put excessive force on the shaft and break it. If you need to clean up a tap quickly on the motorized wire wheel it’s imperative you hold the tap so the wheel addresses the trailing side of the teeth- Then you should be ok. 😃👍
Learning or worse, not learning lessions is important. And as my Father and other mentors used to say..."Some people Never learn, DON'T be one of them!"
The hard way is the only way I appear to learn period! I love that bit in the end! I'm always surprised that your still holding out in the city, I only see disgust in you when I see you talk about it. Not that I blame you, I don't like cities either, too much critters.
Brasso, he's done plenty of videos with it. I reconstituted an old old can with mineral spirits and every time I pass it I gave it a shake. A fellow behind me threw out some motorcycle exhaust manifolds (along with an electricians Craftsman screwdriver) and I took the Brasso to them. You'd never know they had rust on them and they shine like brand new.
Some people feel if you sharpen that tooth back to a point it will be sharp again but not with Taps, it will cut well but the threads will not be fully formed. 😃👍
Max- As you know I am a huge Texas fan. Honestly I am happy that the Governors of border states are sending the migrants to the cities that voted for this. I am glad to see everyone share this issue. When the poop hits the fan people tend to wake up real fast. 😃👍
you should check out your local home depot, klein tools on clearance here in carlisle pa. maybe those "visitors" should stay with the people that invited them or uncrowded towns where those people vacation at....
Looks like i ma going to have to make you an honorary Texan now that you are having Texas problems. They will tell you what they tell us "there is no problem at the boarder". Good luck.
I already hold the title of honorary Texan! I love Texas! Honestly I am so glad the Governors are shipping these migrants to the areas that voted for this. Poetic justice I say! 😃👍
I’ve been looking for years- It’s not easy. Most of NY is actually nice, it just the 5 boroughs that drag the rest of the state down. Same with PA and NJ. 😃👍
Awesome video. I did touch the iron lol... And it was hot. And I wouldn't not want undocumented migrants. Unfortunately they are everywhere. Unreal.. I wish you luck John.. 🇺🇸🗽
68-72 degrees over here and nice cool rain nearly every day this past couple weeks and coming 10 days lovely !! If trump was still president he d have booked cooler weather earlier on ..... 😂😂 Nice delicate staged clean of those taps John , I'd have stuck em all on the wire wheel .... just ain't got the time ......😂😂 😂😂😂😂
John , Sorry, I have to differ with you when it comes to immigration. All of my grandparents came to the United States through Ellis Island around 1917. My father's parents came from Riga, Latvia and my mother's parents came from Dnipropetrovs'k, Ukraine. All were fleeing religious persecution in Czarist Russia. There is a poem at the base of the Statue of Liberty by Emma Lazarus that describes immigrants and the United States. We should remember that the vast majority of our ancestors were not native to this country. Immigration is an issue today as it has been since 1492 when Columbus set sail to what is now the Americas. Bob
Bob I’m sure your grandparents came to this country legally as the majority of people have over the last 200 years. If you agree with open borders then your grandparents never would have made it here, just like the thousands of immigrants that were on the list to enter our country but now can’t because the list is on hold. Not to mention our Grandparents had to be sponsored to come here and get employment within a certain amount of time or be shipped out. Not the same thing as today Bob. I think your grandparents would be a little upset if you compared them to undocumented migrants or whatever today’s term is…
Let’s hope Vickie Palladio can keep them out of of the Point. The mayor is one bad dude, plus he wants to take away yours and mine health care. BTW my daughter graduated from St. Agnes.
Being in Texas, I can understand your point about housing undocumented persons. We also have a big push to educate people to recognize Human trafficking. Not just police, doctors, nurses and teachers, but also trades people. A trafficker may not let a social worker or a teacher in his home, but he will let the plumber, cable guy, electrician in without a second thought. Thanks for another great video!!
Patrick- Nobody I know is against immigration. People have been waiting for years to come here legally only to be delayed because a undocumented person took their spot. It’s not fair to the Immigrants who want to come here the right way.
I bought a expensive router but made in USA like $100 for critical job came coated in wax like that diped it and let it dry Was really cool But only recommend for long term storage of not using Ow and unfortunately this immigrant will be doing all dirty work Americans don’t like to do but yes they do bring are neighbors hoods down sad wat u gonna do
Criminal Alien Invaders..................Containers are easy to find online but 8 Bucks a piece is a little pricey.............It's wise to make sure your taps, dies, drills and files are clean before they get put away........................ FED, FED, FED !!!
I just drilled a bunch of holes in a 2 by 4 and they sit facing upwards, none touching one another. I mark their size on the front. Best of all I could make rows since I might have a dozen of one size and one of the next size.
when the United States has more people looking for free handouts vs people that are working or retired voting for government this country is doomed. Just my opinion

From other comments, it's clear that others around the world do recognize this as well as your videographer talents. Keep up the good work!
Ron- I think I am officially that old timer who accumulated a bunch of useless information and wants to unload it before I check out! 😂👍
I was stubborn, I always had to touch the iron (learn the hard way).. but it makes for a lasting impression... Dad always said, don't go out with a woman that has a deeper voice than you.. I should have listened to dad... S.C. another great video as always... Take care, see you Monday...
Gary- I was the same way! However as I matured I now learn without testing the advise. 😂👍
Some really cool information about the taps the evapo rust is a great product
Man they have to sort out that border bring back 45 he will sort it out the only
Man that gave a dam in this climate god bless take care 👍🇺🇸🙏🗽🇳🇿🦅🪖🏛️45
Now a video building a storage box out of the square pvc fence post?
Love ScoutCrafter vids
Keep up the great work
P.S I’m back again
Congratulations to the young men for making eagle scout that's a great achievement
Larry- It’s almost impossible to meet a Eagle Scout and not be impressed. I myself only made it to Life. 😃👍
To the lumber yard!
Good luck with your city
Your city comments are so spot on. We are at the point where we just have to stand up and say NO. Enough is enough.
Good luck.
The hard way is the only way I appear to learn period! I love that bit in the end! I'm always surprised that your still holding out in the city, I only see disgust in you when I see you talk about it. Not that I blame you, I don't like cities either, too much critters.
Alex- I am constantly looking for land/home on the computer. I first want to find the right State then work my way from there. 😃👍
Hey guys do any of you know of a good way of polishing chrome on old bicycles.
Brillo works great but needs a good waxing afterwards
Brasso, he's done plenty of videos with it. I reconstituted an old old can with mineral spirits and every time I pass it I gave it a shake. A fellow behind me threw out some motorcycle exhaust manifolds (along with an electricians Craftsman screwdriver) and I took the Brasso to them. You'd never know they had rust on them and they shine like brand new.
Thank you so much guys and I will try the Brillo John
CLASSIC RANT OBI WON!!!!! 100% AGREE WITH YA! And yes I we need to go into the capitol but to take the tour NOT to riot!!!!!
I will never clean a tap or die, but that was a great video. Love your politics. What is happening to my country. 😢 Funny Ray Epps bit. 🇺🇸
Either Epps has some powerful friends or he is on the inside. 🤔😂👍
It doesn’t come to a sharp point because it’s dull🤣
Some people feel if you sharpen that tooth back to a point it will be sharp again but not with Taps, it will cut well but the threads will not be fully formed. 😃👍
Sorry John, hard to feel sorry for your city. I'm in El Paso, Tx., this year through May 29, we've had 38,000 migrants.😢
Max- As you know I am a huge Texas fan. Honestly I am happy that the Governors of border states are sending the migrants to the cities that voted for this. I am glad to see everyone share this issue. When the poop hits the fan people tend to wake up real fast. 😃👍
Best of luck at your town meeting but I think your right, once it's done, it's done. You can't change the stupid.
There is nothing better than to see someone seeing the truth after years of believing the media. It is like being born again! 😃👍
you should check out your local home depot, klein tools on clearance here in carlisle pa. maybe those "visitors" should stay with the people that invited them or uncrowded towns where those people vacation at....
LMFAO!
Thanks John. We are a compassionate people, but we can't be the only country in the world that does not enforce its immigration laws.
Ian- you’re absolutely correct, open borders is lunacy and the real ramifications takes years to see! 😃👍
🇺🇲👍
Wow, John, may be time to sell and move to a more reddish state?
I’ve been looking for years- It’s not easy. Most of NY is actually nice, it just the 5 boroughs that drag the rest of the state down. Same with PA and NJ. 😃👍
The other kind of hinge is called a live hinge.
I never knew that! I never liked those type hinges. Back in the 70’s they were everywhere and always failing. 😃👍
Gotcha running late f up Friday all good naw
Awesome video. I did touch the iron lol... And it was hot. And I wouldn't not want undocumented migrants. Unfortunately they are everywhere. Unreal.. I wish you luck John.. 🇺🇸🗽
🤣😂🤣😂
68-72 degrees over here and nice cool rain nearly every day this past couple weeks and coming 10 days lovely !! If trump was still president he d have booked cooler weather earlier on ..... 😂😂 Nice delicate staged clean of those taps John , I'd have stuck em all on the wire wheel .... just ain't got the time ......😂😂 😂😂😂😂
😂😂😂. Your weather sounds wonderful. The shed shops can either cook you or freeze you! 😂
John ,
Sorry, I have to differ with you when it comes to immigration.

Bob
I’m sure your grandparents came to this country legally as the majority of people have over the last 200 years. I think your grandparents would be a little upset if you compared them to undocumented migrants or whatever today’s term is…
...... and they reproduce.
Immigration - sent it to Delaware.
Let’s hope Vickie Palladio can keep them out of of the Point. The mayor is one bad dude, plus he wants to take away yours and mine health care.
BTW my daughter graduated from St. Agnes.
Frank- They won’t be happy until every neighborhood is crap. My GF and Sister went to Saint Agnes. 😃👍
John well said
I bought a expensive router but made in USA like $100 for critical job came coated in wax like that diped it and let it dry
Was really cool
But only recommend for long term storage of not using
Ow and unfortunately this immigrant will be doing all dirty work Americans don’t like to do but yes they do bring are neighbors hoods down sad wat u gonna do
That wax makes for a good protectant! 😃👍
I think its time to retires those "gloves"!
I have had projects where I went through 6 sets of gloves! 🫣
Criminal Alien Invaders..................Containers are easy to find online but 8 Bucks a piece is a little pricey.............It's wise to make sure your taps, dies, drills and files are clean before they get put away........................ FED, FED, FED !!!
I’m surprised not everyone got the Epps joke. 😂👍🇺🇸
Your opinion is spot on- 😃👍
Oh, man.. It happens all over Europe as well... Brought tons of problems already....
It’s on purpose- My question is why? 🤔
