John, thank you for sharing that wonderful life lesson that served you so well. I remember an incident that happened to me in 9th grade, that also taught me a lesson. I was taking a test in my history class, and was desperate to do good on the test, despite having not studied. Unbeknownst to me, the teacher observed my side eye glances in an attempt to get a few answers for a few questions. When the tests had been graded and returned to us, my test had the following written at the top “A / E = C. See me after class”.
Per the teacher’s direction, I did. “Mr. C …. You wanted to see me?”
“Yes I did. So you are wondering about the grade? You received an A on your test because you answered every question correctly. You got an E because you are a lousy cheater. A over E equals C. You get a C on this test.”
I stood there with my mouth open, totally ashamed at what I had done.
I said “Mr. C, this will never happen again.” It didn’t.
I ran into Mr. C years later. I recalled the story to him (he remembered), and thanked him for teaching me such a wonderful life lesson.

When I was a kid I hung around with a bad kid who influenced me and I stole an earphone from the local electronics store, I felt shame and was frightened what the police would do to me, the shop owner didn't press charges, when i grew older the shop owner offered me a job there and I stayed employed for 17 years until they went out of business, the family treated me like family and to this day the son and I are still good friends.
Just like me I think the shop owner saw something in you and with that we have built our character that followed us through life.

Good on you, ScoutCrafter, for getting rid of the TV. You will not regret the change, I'm sure.
When I was a young boy I stole a candy bar and in my "getaway" I got my pant cuff caught in my bicycle chain. Store clerk nabbed me.
He knew my mother and my stepfather. I thought I was done for. He never said a word. I lost a lot of sleep.
Looking forward to the clean tools. Always enjoy your show. Best regards.

Great show. I wish I had that meter when I working. My mother would send me out to cut the switch she was going to use on me. My father would cut you in half with his eyes. They both hurt. Man that word you used ( PRIDE). That was the backbone of America. I taught it to my older children and teaching it to my younger daughters. When I visited my son recently it was pay back time. He said old man off with the shoes in the house. He is so much like my ways, it’s hard to believe. He has pride and I’m proud of him. When I was 6 I took an old pocket watch from my Grandad's house and took it to school, it ended up getting broken of course and I was petrified of owning up so I didn't.
Boy did I get the guilts from that, I genuinely lost sleep over it I would lay there for hours every night trying to get to sleep and when I did get to sleep I would have nightmares and wake up.
After a week or so of this I cracked, couldn't take it any more and confessed. I was so worried because my Grandad and I were extremely close and I was scared he wouldn't love me the same if he knew what I did.
Of course he forgave me but that feeling of guilt and shame never went away to the point I went out and bought him a silver pocket watch when I got my first job.
When I gave it to him and said it was to replace the one I had taken he patted me on the cheek and started laughing so I asked "What's funny?".
He replied "Well the one you took was only a cheap steel one and it hadn't worked for years anyway, thanks boy".😂

They did more by just being who they were and WHO they served and were a witness for than they will EVER know; never trying to be, either. Got special places in my heart for ALL of them. I dropped cable after my cable company encrypted the signal and forced me to use a set-top box. The resolution was awful. This was perhaps 5 or 6 years ago. I do not miss cable.
That is an interesting multi-meter and very inexpensive.

Another great thought provoking video John, my first Meter was very like yours, although I didn't have it so young, I think it's most frequent use in recent years has been to prove to my Dad that he could throw out his old batteries - yes Dad, they are dead, you've gotta let them go ! 😅
I know exactly what you mean with the shame, I think it's part and parcel of caring about your family, regardless of bad decisions you might make, you still wouldn't want to let your family down. And yes, the silence and the look, is far worse than any yelling or beating - my daughter told me recently (she's 27) that if I'm silent it's the worst, I wish I'd known this, it would have saved my blood pressure in their teens ! 😉

I inherited a bunch of my grandfather's tools. He was an avid model airplane builder and we flew them all when I was growing up. He was also an avid handyman and was a car mechanic from the before and after the Korean War. Included in the tools was a bunch of taps and dies like what you found in that box. I would love more videos on taps and dies.

What I really like is the rubber cover. I expect it will stay in place on your car’s dash, or perched on the air filter cover when working on the car. Mine will slip out of place and dangle by the leads the moment I get the contacts in place.

When you mentioned both streaming, and later CB radio - it made me think about a dichotomy I wonder if others share. I used to love spending hours pouring through records and later CDs at record stores, movies at the rental shop, printed magazines and newspapers, and waiting for broadcast television shows. We now have all these things on-tap trough the internet, but for me, it feels like a lot less joy. If we can consume any media instantly, purchase on line and it appears two hours later, artificial intelligence researches and thinks for us, does our job, and we all draw a universal income… what is living? Where is the joy of doing good, hard work? Of curating books and music? The newspaper and a beer when you get home? The adventure of shopping around for something you really desire? I worries me.

I paid a neighborhood friend 5 dollars to steal a fabric air mattress for me from the local hardware store. He gave it to me, and I felt so bad, the next day I put it into a grocery sack my mom saved, walked back to the store and snuck it back onto the shelf, hoping nobody saw me. I barely slept that night knowing what I had to do, and having a stolen item under my bed that I couldn’t get out of my room fast enough….

The funny thing about the saying about not looking a gift horse in the mouth is from people who don't own horses. You look at these things because they forecaste vet bills. It's like the free refrigerator on the street that says it works. Threadwell out of Greenfield Mass. During WW2 they were the main supplier of British standard threading tools. As a side point, I have wodered whether you could dip taps in paraffin wax or some other dip product. It would probabaly take 50 dips in Plastidip.

t is official. You are a social media influencer (just like the Kardashians). I keep buying products you recommend and I bought today another multimeter to add to my drawer full. Seriously the automatic feature will be great for an old guy like me who has to retrain every time I go to use one.

Hey SC. I needed a new multimeter. I have burnt a couple meters up in my younger years, too. I just ordered one. 11:40pm. Tks JN. I got a bunch of taps, etc in similar condition. I know what to do with-em now. Cool beans.

What a great story about the multimeter. I know i smoked a few in my early years...😢😂. To this day im scared to buy a nice oscillascope because i know ill hook it up wrong a ruin a $400 tool. My favorite feature in a multimeter is the temp probe...i use it all the time. Great stuff. Cheers

Joe- Oscilloscopes are just so cool- Mr Carlson’s Lab always has some sort of awesome piece of test gear to drool over.

OK you got me. I have been telling myself for years to buy a new-fangled meter with a continuity function that beeped. Throw in the fact that there are only two sockets to choose, auto-range, torch, backlight, and non-contact function, and it is an easy purchase.

    • @ScoutCrafter
      @ScoutCrafter  Před 11 měsíci +1

I felt the same way! The loud beep on the continuity setting sold me! 😃👍

I cut the cord years ago. Went to a $25 roof top antenna. It gets 58 channels, even way out here in the sticks because I use a booster. I only watch about 2 hours per week(Midsomer Murders) and don't miss any of the rest. You should be able to pickup 20 channels with just an antenna on top of the TV.
The advantage of kerosene is that it leaves a light coating to prevent rust for a while. Good Luck, Rick

Really like seeing you take on your older tap and dies. Hope you cover how to store them. Is there any way to touch up the cutters on a tap or die to bring back some of the sharp cutting edges?

John, the worst thing my Father said to me was "Son, I am disappointed in you". I wanted to curl up and disappear I felt so much shame. Great video and looking forward to the taps and dies coming out of the vinegar as I just bought a rusty set of 40 various for £2 😀.

You are a great guy. Hope we meet up at Jacktown sometime soon. Do you have a link for notices of upcoming events. I’d like to plan a flight from California. Wish you had gone further with Tap and Die cleaning and STORAGE. I too have an accumulation of both and really am tired of digging for a given size. I bought Two Tesman meters. Thanks for all you do.

About 5 or 6 years ago I was looking for a small service cart for work. On craiglist someone had an old machinist cart for $90 with 2 drawers FULL of various taps, end mills and tooling that looked dirty like your stuff. I waited too long before I decided to buy it! Gone.
Everything you had in that torch box should clean up well.
I bought a cheap meter like that several years ago for like $16 mostly because it had a temperature/thermocouple set up. It is a degree or 2 off but the best thing about it is the continuity testing. An extra large display, L.E.D. indicator lights and a very loud BEEP! Which is nice because it gets very loud at work.
I never trust NCV testers. They can sometimes give false readings. Always use the leads and properly test for power. Getting zapped and/or ruining your pliers is no fun.
