Rory was obviously amazing, but to me what's even more mind-blowing was that he was only 23 at the time of this performance. Leading his own band, writing his own material and being recognized as a world class guitar player.

Me too! Love Rory. I had the pleasure of seeing him live twice. He was an absolute beast on the guitar. Gave it everything and then some. The only other guitarist I admire as much as Rory, would be Gustavo Cerati of Soda Stereo. It must be an Irish gift to be as natural as Gallagher & Cerati were.

First concert I ever attended was KISS (headliner) with Rory as the opening act. I never purchased any KiSS recordings but own virtually everything that Rory ever recorded including his stuff with Taste. That was 1975 at Detroit's Cobo Arena. As a 16 year old guitar student I was blown away by the talent displayed by Rory. RIP.

I remember this video and your discussions with Martin at Beat Club (Hamburgh?). This was personal for me since I sincerely believe this is the greatest version of this song by Rory ever. And I told Martin this, and he had to believe me since I probably listened to it over four hundred times in the last decade. I wrote several mails to support you, and he was really great and I'm so glad that this has worked out well.
When Jimi died, Guitar Magazine had to have a winner for their greatest guitarist poll.
If Terry Katz won, I wouldn't have been sad. But it was Rory. And I don't think there was one guitarist in the world that regretted the choice. This song alone shows why.
Why didn't Rory have a larger following? Maybe it was all those 9th chords, played to perfection. Maybe it was his repertoire, which didn't hit the "pop" charts.
The hundreds of thousands of Rory fans won't mind that he didn't have pop success.
Rory was Number One in our hearts.

The sight of you @ 8:40 trying those licks and blowing it was hilarious. I applaud your courage, though, because I could never even ATTEMPT those licks. Which brings up what I’ve often thought about Rory. One almost has to be a professional player, or a knowledgeable historian, or both, to appreciate the subtlety of his technique and his command of his sources that made him what he was - which in turn may be why he was never as popular as he should have been.
The first time I heard Rory was at a buddy’s house - “The Last Time.” I sat bolt upright staring at the speakers, and thought “This is it. This is greatness.” And I never changed my mind.

Rory used his Range Master treble Booster frequently rather than a lot of distortion and overdrive. So he got that clean beefy tone without a lot of mess. I've seen another video where Rory's unusual variations on scales were discussed as you have done here. And that his band was a three piece and he had to carry the show every gig often gets forgotten. amazing. he never played a tune the same way twice. Great you continue to cover him. Hard to believe he's been gone so long. Thanks heaps for the vid. Nice treat to see some of Rory's older tunes covered. It would be great to see some modern covers of them. As an aside, is the sound and tone of a Strat something to be hold, even there with delicate chord playing. Sorry Les Paul!!!!

Thanks Fil for drawing attention to Rory, especially this song. I taught myself electric blues guitar in my basement in New Jersey in the early ‘70s, and the red-flannel shirt live record was such a find! I can tell you pretty confidently nobody else in my high school was listening to Rory. This was about when I discovered ZZ Top’s Tres Hombres. Johnny Winter, BB King and the Allman Brothers were also my “teachers.”

A few days after this "Beat Club" I saw him in our city (at the age of 15). Laundromat was always the beginning of the concert back then. It was incredible. I still like to play the riff today and it still blows me away. And after the concert we "children" sat at the bar in the pub and he came in and sat down at the bar next to us. "Mr. Gallagher oh we we we.........." we stammered. He said, "What? Do you call me that when I'm not there? My name is Rory........". He never played the "simple boy" for image reasons. He was really one of us. He was the best.

One thing I've noticed about Rory's playing is his use of the volume, tone and pickup selector. He's constantly changing his sound subtlety, all the while not missing a lick...

This is something I always notice with the old masters and another reason why I LOVE raw, live playing with cats who can really do it. They understood light and shade and the importance of deftly altering the volume, switching to a wah-wah for a few bars, then going back. As Fil said a lot of it was not technically about the notes it was HOW they were playing them.

I can't tell you how many times I've watched this (literally, since I have no idea how many, just a LOT :) ). The Beat Club sessions are fantastic, it's so great to have that out here for all of us to enjoy. He does some really great acoustic stuff too, on that old steel resonator. There's a '77 in-studio version of Pistol Slapper Blues on that guitar that is just killer.

Saw Rory numerous times in NYC and the surrounding area. Always, always a great show. In clubs he'd frequently do an early, then late show, changing things up completely; with the late show being at least 2.5 to 3 hours. And let's not overlook his acoustic, slide and mandolin playing; Rory was one of a kind and still missed by his many fans. My son's middle name is Rory, in memory of the great he was. As a correction; FIL it's Laundromat, not Laundramat. Thanks for acknowledging The G-man.

Thanks Fil I never tire of watching you break down Rory's music. As you say, there is so much more going on than what meets the eyes and ears at first blush. Playing the tune is one thing getting to actually sound like that is another whole encyclopedia. Most viewers probably don't stop to contemplate it but it doesn't escape me that you are an exceptionally good player to be able to tackle these tunes at all much less get the very close approximations of Rory's tone and dynamics that you achieve. I was 20 minutes into it before I noticed your Rory t shirt peeking out of your hoodie. It is pretty clear you really are a serious fan and I appreciate it very much. Please keep em coming.
