    With those weeds in the garden, mulch is your friend. If you cover everything with straw and leave pockets uncovered where the productive plants are, the straw will suppress most of the weeds and make your job of maintaining the garden much easier. You've mentioned that you'd like to transition to no-dig. Well, using mulch will help with that as well. Earthworms don't like exposure to the sun, and neither do the microorganisms in your soil. The mulch will protect them and increase the number of earthworms loosening the soil for you, as the mulch decomposes, the worms will draw the nutrients down into the soil so that you won't have to try work compost into it.
    Edit: An added bonus of the mulch is that it'll retain moisture in the soil, so you don't have to water as often plus it will prevent the top soil washing away during storms, thus keeping your fertile soil in the garden where it belongs

    • @michelebourke4340
      @michelebourke4340 Před 17 dny +3

      lawn clippings are the best mulch too, combined with leaf litter n small branch prunings, in between your row of veges. It's the "kiss" concept. for that you need the invaluable lawn mower catcher to capture your "mulch gold" n, of course, the priceless wheelbarrow. how people who get into gardening don't understand that bare soil is Nature's anathema still astounds me. You either have weeds, plants or mulch.....n, of course, a map of your area of the water pipes!!!!!

    • @EduardN6448
      @EduardN6448 Před 17 dny +1

      @michelebourke4340 important thing to note about lawn clippings, do not use it if you have any weed seeds in the clippings otherwise you might just make your problems worse. Those seeds can lay dormant for years, I'm not sure if they're common in Portugal but devil's thorn and paper thorn for example (or any other weed with similar characteristics) could still be present even if you mow the lawn regularly since they grow very low to the ground. That's why I didn't specifically suggest lawn clippings, if you don't have any of those weeds then it's perfect, especially since lawn clippings have the perfect carbon to nitrogen ratio to form compost

    Hi Tara,
    it’s me again!
    I know that every time the soil is disturbed( hoed, weeds pulled up, end of harvest plants pulled-) it brings up new weed seeds! I have since changed over to a no- dig method in my gardens- laying down cardboard boxes( I collect used ones from everyone and everywhere) it actually kills the weeds, their seeds and anything else that might want to grow where I want to plant.
    The secret is to 1) water the garden heavily, 2)lay down a layer of cardboard, ( no spaces! Overlap edges!) 3)water that, and now 4)lay down a thick layer of mulch, and 5)water that. Give it a couple of weeks to cook those weeds, and now lay out your rows, cutting holes or strips to allow for plants or seeds. 6)Cover them with compost, and 7)water!
    The idea is multi pronged; the cardboard kills the weeds and plants and seeds, preventing the growth of the majority of new ones.
    Those add nutrients back into the soil.
    The cardboard helps to keep the soil moist and helps new weeds from popping up, meanwhile, breaking down along with each subsequent layer of cardboard and mulch, adding mycelium like crazy to your growing medium below the cardboard.
    The mulch also keeps water where you need it.
    The mulch over cardboard also allows you to keep weeds from your pathways, which i suggest making as wide as your wheelbarrow. Just keep adding mulch as needed. You can edge your walkways or not, purely aesthetics at this point.
    This should carry you through the whole season, if you don’t dig through the cardboard. If you do a second planting in the season, just repeat the process. I’ll just lay smaller boxes laid out lengthwise on either side of my seeds or plants mulch, water etc. you’ll find you will use much less labor and water over the summer, especially if you’re doing drip irrigation at each plant! It’s also a great way to lay the fields fallow over winter… they’ll be easier to plant in the Spring!
    I hope you’ll give this a try, it goes a long way in healing and restoring your land! And your labor.
    And as always, keep up the good work- it must be time for you all to have another break from all the stress; I recommend 4 days to one week every three months, at least!😊
    I’m praying for you and your boys, ( they remind me so much of my son!🥹🥰 ) and I hope you all have a great summer! Can’t wait till the Big House starts, and the olive tree? I was crying with you - such an incredible force of nature!
    Hugs and love!
    Patty

      Yes, raised beds help you to control your garden. First lay out cardboard or several layers of newspaper to stop any weeds, then drive corner stakes to mark the edges of each bed - 3feet wide is a good width for a garden bed so you can easily reach from both sides. Next build up the sides - higher means less bending, fill with dirt and compost , worms and water.

Composting is key and straw helps too for some crops. Permaculture methods like, lasagne-beds. Cardboard is so useful too. Multi-cropping in the beds. Etc, etc,.

    Garden. Two suggestions. Look into 'square foot gardening' which concentrates the plants you want, leaving less space for weeds, and giving you less area to maintain.
    And mulch. Around the plants you want spread whatever mulch you can obtain. It will snuff out weeds, moderate the soil temperature, and conserve water.
    And for the future. Raised beds, high enough to sit on the side of the bed makes it easier on 'more mature' joints. Maybe build one a year and after a few years you'll be set.

    Obi is divine. ❤ I once had a cat called Obi 😅
    I've had border collies almost my whole adult life (30 years) and I have to say they definitely need to be trained. They are highly intelligent and need structure otherwise they will run amok and will be out of control especially with kids. Consistent positive discipline is needed especially if they're going to be around machinery as they are. Once trained they are one of THE best breeds around. 🥰🥰All the best 🤩

    Courage dear Newby family, you need to do what needs to be done, plumbing, planting and removing weeds, taking care of your little boys, the renovations, well ONE DAY at the time. I have seen other farmers building boxes off the ground to better control their planting, weeding, harvesting, so much easier to control and maintain. Maybe, next year you should try it. JOY to see Obi following his close friend Crusoe, so sweet the boy so excited on his days he falls asleep everywhere, Sawyer playing with his Dad and that sweet laugh and smiles, blessing us also. Take care Tara and John, watch for out Crusoe, Sawyer and Obi, they love to play around you. I have a small vegetable garden and went to doing raised beds a few years ago. I work a lot so I don't have a lot of time. Poor John and his plumbing struggle. I've found that that type of thing, the stuff you hate doing, if done often , gets easier as you become better through practice, you find that you don't hate it anymore. Hope that helps John,unfortunately you will just have to grind on through till then. Much like changing nappies.... you don't want to, but you have to - after a while you just smash it quickly out the way with minimum fuss .
    I especially like how the local Portuguese folk have embraced your family, as foreigners, and been so good to you all ,and also,how you have integrated into the local community so well, and embraced their local way of life too.

  • @willaharlatt4862
    @willaharlatt4862 Před 17 dny +3

    i would consider proper raised beds with lots of mulching...........the raised bed, maybe use only 1 or 2 planks in height, will help you have a more targeted area to grow in which is easier to maintain and mulching around the plants will reduce the weeds and keep water evaporation at a minimum. The down side of raised beds is the cost of wood and soil to fill them but if you start with a couple at a time and gradually introduce more each year it is doable for most.

    On other channels I have seen useful ideas. They use a ground fabric, placing it in rows. Held down with some sort of pin. Then they make holes🎉 in the fabric for the seeds. ( As apart from one another as needed) And so there are less weeds and your veggies grow uninterrupted. Also less weeds in the veggie area. There may be a few in the walkways in between, but that will be easier to handle, in the long run. Just a thought. 🎉

    Dear Tara, The best thing I did for my garden this year is: sawdust mulching!!!!!!!!! It works like magic. The ground doesn't dry out as fast and no weeds! There might be places that give away free sawdust (sawmill, carpenters workshop) or you could use flattened cardboard boxes from any supermarket or collect and dry out grass clippings and cover your veg garden. Mulch with something!

    The only way i found to keep control of this size garden is to divide it into sections, each day you deal with one section eg Monday section one, Tuesday section two etc usually weekends off. It is hard to maintain the whole garden every day it becomes overwhelming. You may also need to fence it to make sure the dog stays out until he is older. Maybe give a section to the kids to deweed so they can see the difference between veg and weed. These are just suggestions of things you could use or adapt to your conditions. This is what all gardeners face!! You need a garden of this size if not bigger to live off, therefore organise. Love your enthusiasm and thank goodness for Joao!!❤

    put down a thick layer of cardboard in between the rows. In the Autumn, run the hens in a run over the problem grass until clear then clear the rest of the areas with the hens in the run. then put down cardboard; buy some of those round bales of straw and put over the cardboard. In the spring just compost over the areas that you want to plant and plant into the compost over the straw and cardboard> more straw to mulch. wear gloves .. I live in the Ariege and just got bitten by a brown recluse when gardening. Thanks for the vlog, a joy.
