  • Welcome to our dark digital future. Welcome to DELISTED. When Nintendo closed WiiWare, hundreds of games were lost. One game was Blaster Master Overdrive, a game that is not even listen on the developer's website anymore. Maybe because it's possibly the worst remake I've ever played! But bad games need preservation too!

There is an archive of I think all WiiWare titles (though currently missing game starting with A and B for some reason). Wii emulators are quite accurate now and you can also load games on USB with a modded Wii. You can find safe links to these archives on the emulation wiki

To be fair, Blasting Again also used the Worlds of Power book for its lore. The protagonists are the children of Jason and Eve (Who was never in the lore of the original game, but might potentially be an interpretation of Metafight's Jennifer), the "Lightning Being" classification given to the Plutonium Boss in the book is expanded into an entirely new group of enemies. It was also released in Japan with no changes to its story or lore, so that might be why Inti Creates seems so familiar with it, or at least had a starting point to dig into the material.

I don't think Nintendo sees Earthbound the same way as the fans do, they don't see a profit and don't care about how good of a game it is, the mother series was never a massive success for Nintendo compared to say Mario, Donkey Kong, Legend of Zelda, Metroid, Smash Bros, or even Kirby. F Zero and Earthbound/Mother are heavily slept on by Nintendo simply because they know they can make more money releasing games from their more popular and successful first party IP's.

There is SO MUCH to be learned from bad games, often they try too much or do the bare minimum but this allows for other devs to really see what worked and what didn't. Bad games are just as good to look into if not easier because of this, with good games you can get overwhelmed by the amount of stuff that does work that it's hard to really see what actually works. Love the new series and love looking into bad games, it's always amazing the work people put into games even if the game doesn't turn out well.

Not really? I mean, the first one is literally just what you sign up for when buying literally any physical object. The second is what you sign up for when buying any software object. Physical media breaks over time, and while software doesn't, it *does* require some amount of maintenance even if that's just in the form of server time/space used to store and/or distribute it. So...'things become harder to find as you move in time away from the last time one was manufactured' and 'it costs some amount of money to keep digital games around, every corporation is a Profit Optimization Algorithm and so even if that amount of extremely low it's still too much for something which isn't earning any money"

Especially Castlevania and Contra seem like they still have a lot of content they could release just based on stuff they already have.

Which is the best news you could possibly have for Konami. There's more hope now for franchises they own then there has been in the last few years. The film industry has a problem where roughly 50% of all films ever released are either partially or wholly missing, including most (estimates range from 75% to 90%) of the silent film era!
We gamers still have a chance to keep video games from having a similar gap in it's early history through videos like this, ROMs, and preservation and restoration of physical copies of games.

There are some Zelda choose your own adventure books, but I’m pretty sure they aren’t official cannon. Is it due to their obscureness, are they trash that Nintendo would rather sweep under the rug? Who knows? At the very least they’re official Nintendo products so I think they count.

Something that I'd like to see a video on is games where updates that significantly changed the game and got overwritten. There's a lot of fighting games that had characters reworked across patches, for example in Blazblue chrono phantasma 1.01 Kokonoe was infamously and absurdly busted, later patches toned her down and now it's not possible to access the old patch where she was fucked up. Your only (legal) options are to delete all update data which reverts the game to before she was released, or update to the latest patch where she's toned down. That one in particular is a pretty notable piece of fighting game history, but there's others too and this is only going to become more common as more games get regular patches as opposed to sequels. I don't see a lot of talk about preserving game patches outside of like, speedrunning, but I think it's incredibly important for the historical record to be able to go back.

I never played Overdrive, but I feel it's safe to say from this video Zero is the better remake/reboot since it keeps the spirit of the original intact while making much needed improvements to the controls and ability to navigate.

I always thought that bad games needed preservation too. Just because they’re bad doesn’t mean they don’t have their merits. Even the worst games have some redeeming qualities no matter how superficial they may be in the grand scheme of things. As far as preservation goes, I think it should be everything or nothing. Preserve the classics, definitely, but also preserve the games that didn’t get that much love.

Now compare and contrast that to Christmas NiGHTS, another demo, which was on disc. I was suppose to get it in my issue of Ultra Game Players, but it wasn't there (did the mailman steal it?) So flash-forward about 20 years later, I finally bought it off E-bay. This is why I support a physical future, you can always get these games when you are ready.

I have fond memories of playing it when it was first released, and I went back to play it again last year, and I still think it's a solid game. I agree that it could use some polish. The graphics are so bare bones and the lack of classic controller support feels like a huge oversight, but the level design and mechanics feel good. I went on quite the quest of hunting for third party controllers that would work well for this game, and the best solution I found was actually a grip for the Wiimote, but now I have a few different obscure Wii controllers, which is fun. I really don't think the music in this is as bad as you say, but otherwise, I think you make good points.
