Doom fans have just brought back Doom RPG! It has been reverse engineered to play on PC. Still no officially rerelease but just leave it to the fans to be the real heroes!!
www.doomworld.com/forum/topic/129997-doom-rpg-port-reverse-engineering/
I'm glad to see you made the update so fast lol
That's awesome!
I’ve been playing it on my laptop with a PlayStation 5 controller over bluetooth and it’s like I’m on the bus ride home in 2005 and I have a Motorola RAZR
I loved DoomRPG2 back in the day and I always wanted to play the original, I'll definitely check this out. Holding out hope they can bring back the sequel.
@@ImportAustraliathey just did like yesterday!
I don't know why, but having Scott voice John Carmack is astonishingly perfect.
I think it's because some of the lines he voiced feel like gag lines he'd put in an episode like you can see the skit in your mind with Scott
They look similar. If Scott was blond and slightly skinnier.
Good ol Virgin energy
That's why the voice was familiar! Lol i couldn't place it at first
@@lilquantumgirl blond, skinnier, and a 6th dimensional superbeing made of pure energy destined to subjugate all of humanity
Scott's voice out of nowhere scared the heck out of me. Once I realized it was him, I bursted out laughing.
I was wondering if it was Scott when I first heard it.
Now I know.
Same here lol
back in the day i emailed John carmack about these games and trying to get them ported and he put me in contact with a person at id and I had to get a petition together for people to show there was interest in getting the games ported nothing ever came of it though
The fact that mans emailed you back is crazy tho
@@1doobiedoo actually back in the 80's it was far more common.
@@davidmiller9485 Back in the 80's? Before anyone knew who John Carmack was? What a strange reply.
@@davidmiller9485 are you high brother
I love how similar Doom RPG 1 is to the SNES SMT Games
They even share the demonic infestation
Damn teleporter accidents. Stuff always seem to go wrong with them.
SMT is just DOOM if you could talk to the demons like that one reviewer wanted.
@@pokehybridtrainer Well, SMT was because of a devil summoning program
@@zakazany1945 the earlier versions of SMT have it as a result of a teleporting programming malfunctioning
Later games spun it the other way around, to make the premise less silly to people looking into it
Essentially, in the first SMT game on the SNES (and only that one, it seems), somebody is experimenting with a computer program that can teleport people around... and demons come out of that program. In that game it is essentially a side character NPC that you can occasionally run into and forget ever was a person
So wait... can we use this as proof that Doom is part of the SMT continuity? The MegaTen Shared (game) Cinematic Universe?
Doom RPG helped me get through the boredom of high school, used to play it on my phone during class after i was done with stuff, legit fun little dungeon crawlers!
Same! It was really solid game! Never finished it though.
I also found it in high school, from some hidden free jar game dump. The farther I got, the more astonished I became that the game I was playing was actually a real thing, actually published by id. It was unbelievable, and perfect for school!
Same bro, this game help a bit back in time
Yeah, same! I used to play on my phone waiting for my Masters lectures to start! Was really disappointed when it was over when I finally finished them.
Same, back on my old Sony Ericsson 😂 i had that weird isometric Bioshock game too
john carmack was giving out the .jar file of doom rpg on his twitter a while ago. they play on modern devices pretty well.
Man I remember actually playing Doom II RPG back in the day. Remember recently looking it up again and hoping to find it in the Android Store, but no dice.
Me too! I had a great time playing both of the Doom RPGs back in the day. Wish I still had the phone or something.
I'm playing it right now using java emulator on my phone
The jar files are easy to find with a search. You just need those and an emulator like j2me. Have 1 and 2 on my phone.
Scott as John Carmack is such an inspired choice, I would cast him in a fuckin' biopic.
Doom RPG helped to make lunch breaks on highschool more tolerable for my depressed teen self, it's about time it gets the recognition it deserves
Yeah highschool sucked, I can't trust anyone who actually enjoyed it.
Rest In Peace, Derek’s DS rumble packs. Underused but not under remembered.
My wife had the first mobile Doom RPG, she loved it and for years she'd tell me about it until one day she saw me watching a video on Doom.
I was like damn, I choose right.
13:15 This is also kind of sad, considering that the DS got a full-fledged true 3D dungeon crawler in the form of "Fighting Fantasy." It runs SHOCKINGLY well. It stays at a steady 30FPS, despite having complicated polygonal geometry - no raycasting. If you've never seen it, it might be a good one to cover on Punching Weight someday.
(And it's actually a pretty good game, too, although the difficulty is way too high. Then again, that does go with the Fighting Fantasy brand.)
Oh man I didn't even know there was a DS version of Warlock of Firetop mountain. Been playing the switch version and loved that and loved the evil evil evil books back in the day. May have to find a way to play that.
If you can’t get any of these games, Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey has a similar feel.
Well that is probably because SMT copies D&D....
This channel always misses so much. like how Doom was designed using D&D and was a tabletop RPG before an FPS. famously.
@@razerow3391 You must be fun at parties.
Etrian Odyssey is also pretty similar, although it leans more on the fantasy side of things instead of demons.
Don't forget 1981 Wizardry. Those turn-based DRPG's with party management etcetera such as Strange Journey and Etrian Odyssey has some inspirational from it.
Been playing games for like 28 years of my life and I had NO idea any of these games existed. Pretty cool!
Some wizard could probably make a faithful recreation of DOOM RPG and its sequel in GZDOOM.
That "Your bi-days are numbered!" quip really got me. Proof I'm still a child in an increasingly below average 34 year old body.
Orcs & Elves was one of my favorite games as a kid, didn't even know about it's history
8:40 Last thing I expected to learn in this was that the song from Garden State had a Machinima music video, the 2000s were definitely a time.
I played the hell out of Doom 2 RPG on my old LG Rumor touch. I have so many fond memories of that game. So glad you're covering this series!
I've played them ALL! Seeing that for years a "dumbphone" was all I had, back when first iPhones were already a thing. Come to think of that, there were many little Java gems I've put hours into - I remember one game which was basically a clone of puyo puyo, came pre-installed on my phone.
I've caught a pneumonia due to my own stupidity (T-shirt of your favourite band plus leather jacket on top looks good, but isn't practical when there's like -10 C degrees outside and you are going for a bar crawl with friends) and ended up in a hospital for about a week with high fever. I've started to play it out of boredom and I was so hooked that my phone has ended up being plugged into the charger at all times, because I've spent HOURS a day playing this.
BTW. Wolfenstein RPG was retconned as Doom prequel and Blazkowicz was Doom guy ancestor, lol! Yes, the turn-based gameplay has worked great. I wish that these games would get a re-release, even though they are a relic, they are an incredibly cool relic and deserve preservation.
Is it just my imagination or does Uncle Derek have some nice guns?
Working out again seems to be paying off.
I remember working for EA when they were porting the Wolf RPG game to cell phones and doing QA testing for it.
after it was released I bought it for my phone :D
23:42 My life changed for the better after finding out that this ad exists. Thank you Derek.
I played through doom rpg on a sony ericsson w300i back in 2009 and I remember finding a debug menu that let me change a lot of of the game's variables, and turns out that the tile to tile movement is the game moving through the map in real time, but super fast, and while fiddling with one of the variables I'd made each turn and move feel like a fps proper. it even ran smoothly on that phone's 160x120 screen!
I played both Doom RPG and Wolfenstein RPG demos on a weird disk my friend gave me back in the day. Always wanted to play more
Gotta love those special effects recorded while using the studio's bathroom 15:58. That Carmack guys is a genius.
I actually have both of these on my PSP with a java emulator. They're clunky, but charming in an odd sort of way. Kinda wish they had gotten an official port like Orcs and Elves did.
I forgot the psp had a java emu lol, that's awesome
How I Do That???
You're looking buff derek, glad to see your doing well!
Holy shit you're right
Orcs & Elves I did play on the DS back in the day and actually enjoyed it. I'm not a big RPG fan. But I love id Software and John is one of my favorite game developers. So I decided to give it a try and was pleasantly surprised.
Thank god Gunther got some love, I remember I liked him so much that I actually made a “create a wrestler” of him in one of the smackdown vs raw games, forgot how surprisingly good these games were
The Mischief Makers music in the background, though 🥲
Always instant nostalgia
Weird but interesting branches of the classic Doom tree. Thanks for covering these in such detail. Well done.
I specifically bought Orcs & Elves for the DS because I heard the story about this series somewhere before and found it interesting. I have a lot of nostalgia for old Java phone games, and even though I did not play any of these on a phone back in the day, the DS port still gives me a kick of that nostalgia.
I played Doom RPG on my Samsung slider when at university. Great nostalgia on this video.
Oh, the first Doom RPG sounds like a mistery dungeon type of game, with the attack and movement consuming a turn. That's freaking cool!
Its like a mix of Wizardry and Mistery Dungeon
I love it
I've been trying to dev out a spiritual sequel of sorts to Doom RPG. It's on the back burner for now, as the prototype wasn't as fun as I wanted. It's a mix of RPG and DoomRL. I'm thinking about moving to an action point system (Fallout 1/2). Like I said, back burner for now. I started this process because I love DoomRPG, and the lack of it is palpable.
I can happily say that I played Doom RPG a lot when I had my old phone, completed it like three times. Loved it!
Scott the Woz is how I always imagined John Carmack to sound like.
My Nokia phone had a more limited version of Doom RPG and there were a NPC that joked about being a different guy than the other one despite being only a color palette swap due to space limitations.
I missed out on these back in their day, and I hope they get ports or remakes!
yeah with a pfp like that you're probably barely 20, ofc you missed out...
@@xehP yeah with a pfp like that you're probably barely 13
@@xehP I don't follow. How are you getting age from a profile pic?
@@Galanthos Some bigoted belief that trans people all have to be super young
Emulation is a thing.
I have these moments of desperately searching for the Doom Rpg because I'm so interested, thank you so much for covering this
I found it at the end of 2020 I still have it on my phone. Are you still looking?
Watching this now cause Doom 2 RPG (iOS version) was finally beautifully ported to PC as of a couple of days ago. Today I've beaten it for the first time ever. What a game. Now it will never be lost
The most egregious example of preserved 1337 speak is that kid in Tony Hawk's Underground right as you're about to leave New Jersey and he calls you a noob and says he's gonna pwn you or whatever. It's amazing.
The GBA FF4 port had some too, IIRC
OMG. When I commented, sometime ago, that you should make a video on the Doom RPG games, I honestly thought it was never gonna happen.
Dreams do come true, after all.
EDIT: I still remember playing Doom RPG on my Sony Ericsson k310 in high school. The 'Goodbye, marine' moment (probably those who played the game know what I'm talking about) broke my heart.
And going to the websites that were 'unlocked' everytime you finished the game, challenging you to complete more stuff.
I remember playing Orcs and Elves on my friends R4. Had a good time with it. Wanted to find a copy of it for myself, but I have never seen it out in the wilds.
I want Orcs and Elves 2 so bad. I love that DS game. Actually own it physically. Doom II RPG is actually really fun too
"Mega toilet throwing action"
Wow, B. J. was doing devious licks before devious licks were a thing!
It’s great to have back in the game Daddy Derek. I’ve really missed your videos bro. The last time you did was I think that Brazilian console,if I am not mistaken.
Anyways great to have you back, and what better way to start off Punching Weight is start another Doom related ports, but this time it’s on the old school mobile game. I remember Doom RPG and I watch my brother played it back when it was new. It’s amazing that how much work they’ve put on a phone no less. It’s would’ve been good enough to be on GBA but this is good too.
I imagine Derek having a conspiracy theory wall full of photos and strings, trying to get to the bottom of this chicken-hating agenda.
This video is awesome, also I appreciate the mischief makers music in the background. (IIRC it's Mischief Makers)
The phrase "the Zeebo Gringo strikes again!" made me remember to like this video :)
I've been playing the RPGs on the J2ME emulator, and they are shockingly great dungeon crawlers.
Oooh, I remember playing Wolfenstein and Doom RPG on my old Blackberry. I'll have to dig that thing out of the closet and see if they're still on there.
Thanks for coming back. Great video! Greetings from Argentina.
I forgot how much In The Waiting Line slaps.
I'd love to see these rereleased on modern phones. I had the Wolfenstein one on my iPhone back when it released there, and really enjoyed it. Never thought to track down the .jar files, but that sounds like fun, so off to Google I go!
OH MY GOD YES I ADORE THESE GAMES. They need a comeback like, yesterday. I was addicted to the RPG family from ID growing up, playing on my dad's Sony Ericsson. I can only hope a remaster/rerelease is in the works for each of these 🥺
12:12 Oooh, I hear some Mischief Makers in the background. Uncle Derek continually shows off his good taste.
I really enjoyed Doom 2 RPG, I got an IPod Touch for Christmas when I was a teenager, I randomly stumbled across it in the App Store. I got so many hours of enjoyment out of that game.
[the gender meme]
"But what's in your pants?"
"Doom." (Pulls flip phone out of pocket and starts DOOM RPG) "Literally."
3:45 “WARLOCKED!”
That ad hook at the beggining was super smooth
that mischief makers tune ooo what a jam. great vid guys!
I played first one many times as a kid on a cellphone, got so many lvls, so even the last boss was down in one shot of a pistol.
Special shoutout to DoomRL, an extremely unique twist on the traditional roguelike that was made yeeeears before the modern roguelite boom occurred.
Too bad the project was shelved thanks to Bethesda. Would have loved to see a DoomRL 2, Final DoomRL or modding support. Remember enjoying the devs other RLs based on Berserk and Aliens. Haven't played his spiritual sequel to Doom RL, Jupiter Hell but it looks pretty good.
WAIT A FREAKING SECOND! ORCS & ELVES IS CONNECTED TO DOOM!?!? THOSE GAMES ARE FREGACKING AWESOME!!!!
9:02 Oh my god, Scott the Woz!
Derek really showing off the guns in this episode. I’m of course talking about the one that squirts Holy Water and *absolutely nothing else*
"Making Doodle Jump money" is a phrase I will somehow slip into average conversation, mark my words
glad you mentioned orcs and elves it's one of those games me and my best friend were into in high school and always went for $1 at gamestop near the end of the DS's life but it's pretty fantastic I played through it a little over a year ago I got so used to the movement controls I was moving so fast it was almost like walking speed lol
Doom RPG was the first cell phone game I ever played in the work bathroom stall… for an hour.
True story. I nearly failed a collage math course because of Doom RPG. I was obsessed with that game at the time and played it HOURS A DAY on my Motorola Razer!
Orcs & Elves was such a good dungeon crawler on the DS. Still have my copy.
Honestly think it deserved more credit for that. It's a deeply under-served take on the RPG. There's just so long & far between solid entries despite being such a storied sub-genera.
OMG I had this game back in 2005 for my phone. What a weird spinoff but was pretty enjoyable
Glad you're back Derek!
I had these games on my phone years ago, to play on the train ride to work. They weren't bad.
5:15
Dogs: Dads playin Doom again.
Turn-based demon shooting in first-person with sprites? Classic Shin Megami Tensei vibes.
Uncle Derek is responsible for all my Mischief Makers flashbacks. I hadn't thought about that music for YEEEEEEEEEEEARS.
Dude, I had THAT Doom game on I think my OG RAZR? Shit was a blast.
Wolfenstein RPG was very good I played it in 2022 on a Nokia and I still remember it as the best rpg I played at that time
I had Doom RPG for my Motorola Razr flip phone. Long hours spent on the city bus playing DOOM RPG
I love the Mischief Makers music in the background.
I think the death saturn was in a museum somewhere and was made as a joke
Edit: love your dogs, there’s something I wish one could pet
I had these on my old Motorola V3 Razr, back in like 2007. I loved playing them. Glad to see them get such praise.
Glad to see you're back homie, from some podunk in the rural SE
Had to pause when my ears stumbled over "malloc".
Did NOT expect to hear about dynamic memory allocation in a SSFF video xD
Great coverage! Too bad I pwned my iPhone, i'd totally revisit the Doom RPGs!
There was a port of doom rpg 1 to windows. Just took some setup. It was unofficial though. But fully playable.
So great to have y’all back. Love the channel and content
Your sponsor should give you a bonus because talking about death crimson is the only way anyone has ever got me to watch all the way through a sponsor segment
That chill Pilotwings 64 track slipping in.... That is a good game.
I remember these! Lots of fun. Thanks for the stroll down memory lane.
It'd be neat to see you cover Renegade Kid, a developer I really liked when I was young. They were only around for 10 years, but they made some impressive bangers on the original DS, and both founding members, Jools Watsham and Gregg Hargrove, were always quite easy to contact.
Love the new lighting, Derek and Producer Grace!
Should not be left out, DoomRL, one of my favorite roguelikes ever!
We mock Windows Phone, but honestly a retrospective of the Xbox-branded games for Windows Phone 7 might make for a fascinating Punching Weight.
The music from Mischief Makers!!!!
A man after my own heart. ❤
I remember playing Doom RPG on my dad's old Motorola and living it. If the code and stuff could some day be recovered and ported to modern systems I'd lose my mind
Before watching the video, I just wanna share that I played Doom RPG on my flip phone back in ‘07. It was REALLY good! The story, gameplay, combat, everything.
oh my God, the Mischief Makers music is giving me massive nostalgia
