  • What is the ultimate vehicle that does everything? A car that can haul a family around, comfortably do long road trips, all without sacrificing fun and performance. The Audi RS6 Avant is an important milestone in car history, not just for Audi but for mature car enthusiasts who don't want to give up the passion for driving. This video is a tribute to the Audi RS6 Avant legacy that began over 20 years ago, and I want to share my buying story for this very special family car.

When looking at Audi RS cars in general, they are very understated. Unless you knew what the RS badge meant, you probably would think it’s a nice-looking Audi. For the car enthusiasts who know that small RS badge is something truly special, and when you see it on a wagon or Avant, that’s next level.
A family car doesn’t have to be a boring compromise that has no soul.
This was Audi’s first V8 RS wagon that followed the iconic B5 RS4, continuing the great lineage of RS cars that we now have come to love and enjoy modern day. There’s so many little details in this car that are unique and special. From the carbon fiber inserts and alcantara headliner, to the little RS badges and red accents around the car. For a twin turbo V8, surprisingly, there is hardly any turbo lag. The way the power delivery hits, it’s very progressive and linear. These cars are so comfortable and quiet, even with this car being 20 years old, it still holds up and feels rock solid.
Buying a used Audi RS6 (what to watch out for)
Okay, so you might get lucky like I did and find a few RS6 Avant’s on the market, but you should be careful when buying these cars.
The most common issues you are going to run into are suspension, transmission, and cam belts.
The DRC or dynamic ride control suspension system while great in theory is prone to fail. It’s basically a hydraulic based system that pushes fluid to the corner of the car to keep it level. When it works, it’s great, but any leaks in the system would result in the suspension failing and you get these awful knocking sounds.
Regarding the transmission, Audi says this is a sealed gear box, and while it doesn’t technically require a lot of maintenance, it is under a lot of pressure. It can be hard to tell if the gearbox is toast but a good test is to try put the car into gear and if you hear/feel any clunkyness, there’s a good chance it’s toast.
Cam belts need to be changed every 40K miles on this car. If they fail you essentially have no engine so check those service records!
While this V8 does produce around 440 hp, be sure to check the state of the intercoolers and hoses for the turbos. If they are leaking, you will have loss of power and it can put strain on the turbos.
Okay, so lots of scary things to consider right? This is why it is so important to buy a used car like this from an owner who cared for it, and has the records to show that.
Despite these cars being rare, don’t just buy one because it comes up on the market. Always make sure you have a comprehensive service history for the car. It goes without saying, but make sure you budget for tires and breaks. While the Audi RS6 Avant might be a very practical car, it is still a performance car that will cost you more to run. Fun = money.
Buying an overseas Audi RS6 from Japan
What was interesting about this car was the history of where it has travelled to. Originally, this was a euro spec Audi RS6 that was imported to Japan to its first owner. Then, was imported to British Columbia Canada where the second owner drove it to Alberta. The second owner then drove it back to BC, where I then flew to buy it from him, then drove it back to Alberta! Not many ordinary cars have that kind of journey, but this isn’t an ordinary car.
    Conclusion
While I loved my E63 sedan, there is something special about fast wagons that not a lot of people understand. I like that it can be fast and fun when I need it to, but when I don’t want that, the RS6 can be that comfortable luxury car to cruise around in. My friends, family, even my wife wasn’t sold on the choice for a wagon, but after they say it, went for a ride, it was like a switch and then they understood.
I’m so happy to have and RS6 that I can drive every day and enjoy everything it can do.
    Thanks for watching!

Great report! The good old Audi Avant C5 is my favorite too. Unfortunately I haven't had an RS6 yet. That would be a dream! But my Audi A6 Avant 2.5 TDI quattro, also from 2004, has not let me down to this day. Good workmanship, good performance, low consumption and excellent traction. Current mileage: > 400,000. And there will be more to come.

Thanks for sharing, Deichwolf14! Your A6 Avant 2.5 TDI quattro is a true testament to Audi's craftsmanship and reliability. That's an impressive mileage, and it sounds like you're in for many more enjoyable miles ahead. Keep those wheels rolling! and thank you for sharing and watching our presentation! 👍

Great back story and video of the RS6. I'm even more impressed you were considering an A4 Avant since that was my last car...in Prestige and Sline trim. I sold it( regretfully but got a crazy offer) recently and went over to the Dark side, but so far the B58 machine is a beast. One day I plan to own a C7 RS6 and I will be fully satisfied with owning one of the greatest wagons ever. Kudos again and safe travels 👏

Yea it was something about the first get A4 sline wagon. Had such a clean bodyline. Jeez the C7 RS6 would be a dream. That thing is probably one of the best looking modern RS6 bodies out there.

@@AndriyMarchyshyn Hi and congrats on the C5 RS6 Avant! The passion you have for the car really shines through. I also own a C5 RS6 Avant here in Finland where it typically gets as cold as -30°C. I'm wondering what you have done, or will do for engine block heating during the cold winters?

@@LimeyDude These are such great cars hey! Honestly just a run a 0w rated oil instead of the 5w rated oil for the summer. I ran mine all winter long and overnight it was parked in the garage which would get down to -20 usually and the car started great. Throughout the day when it dipped to -35C and it was parked outside for 8 hours, just turn the key, let the cars electronics kick in, and then start her up. You won't have any issues as long as your battery is strong. That would be my biggest worry. Especially if the car is outside overnight

And I totally get why you’d trade e63 for this.
I had a CLS55 kompressor, tuned to 550HP, fast but not engaging.
Also currently have F80 M3, bought it new, gave it to my wife.
All because this damn RS6 hits all the emotions just right, closest feeling if not better than my tuned 996tt I had back in the single with no kids days. It’s brilliant and I keep spending money on it ‘cause I just can’t part ways or haven’t been able to find a replacement for it, dammit!

Is it true that Rs 6 avant was built and assembled in Porsche factory

    From 1990 to 1995

Great question. Porsche was a well know subcontractor for many companies at the time, it's possible they built them. Seeing is how they also collaborate with Audi on the RS2. Can't say for sure, please post back if you find out! Thank you for watching 👍
