  • B550 is here and it's the first motherboard to launch at a time when AM4 is starting to become end of life with regards to the 5 year support promised back in 2016. So should you get a B550 or an X570? Let's talk about it.

      @@ArmageddonAfterparty IDK my Asrock b450m hdv isn't missing any features that I'm aware of. All those beefed up VRM's on more expensive boards are a bit pointless with AMD since you're not really going to get anything out of an overclock, anyways. It might make sense if I was running an R9 chip for rendering or something, but the 2200G I was originally running in it wasn't ever going to push it to its limits, and even the 3600 + 2070 I've upgraded to over the last couple years had never caused me any problems. The only reason I'm even considering upgrading is because I would like 2 more DIMMs. Even that isn't a deal breaker, I still haven't maxed out the 32gb board limit, and really I'm only considering an upgrade because the plague has resurrected an old internet community from the dead and we want a dedicated game server for minecraft and maybe quake (I also want a dedicated streaming capture box so I can record VR without puking from encoding-induced stutters and latency lol) and I just already have half the parts to build one.

      If you saved money you probably did the right thing.
      I never think hard enough as to how much wiser it would be to take the savings from parts slightly slower than the best at quite a bit less cost and then buy again in 3 years using the savings, something a lot better whilst having something still worth a higher part of its cost to sell on. I think you can stay better off and more up to date as an average this way with.
      I am going to get the zen3 5600x because everyone can only talk about the future as to why the 5800x or 5950x will be better (more cores which aren't yet used properly) with most FPS benchmarks showing 1-2% difference. - Saving $400-500
      I am going to get the B550 because whilst I can't find a benchmark comparison, I'm guessing it is in the same ball park.
      Saving $100
      I will get the 6800 XT radeon because 5% more performance from the 6900XT is not worth 50% more money.
      Saving $450
      So $1000 odd dollars saving instead of 5-8% more FPS.
      In 3-4 years I expect that $1000 will help buy a lot more than 8% more FPS.
      Incidentally my reason for going AMD now is that I think there is a lot of logic to the idea that because Xbox/PS5 are both AMD platforms, cross platform developments in the future will give far more natural affinity and time to AMD optimisations.

      You're likely starting from the wrong spot.
      First you figure out everything you need the system to do.
      When you're clear on that, the parts you need or don't need become obvious. If you have money left over, you invest that into the parts that you expect to last longest, like the monitor, SSD, or PSU.
      Don't invest more into motherboard, GPU or CPU than what you need, as they become outdated very quickly.

I personally went with the RTX 3070 Ti because it was only 25 euros more than the regular RTX 3070, if any more expensive then the Ti variant ain't worth getting at all, especially with 4-10% increase, haha.
      I've thrown a undervolt with a little overclock on the undervolt and it's almost performing as the Ti variant should've been, but the lack of the VRAM, which is only 8GB, is a disappointment. 10GB would've hit the sweet spot for the card, still not enough, but would've been much better.

I ended up getting the Meg X570 ACE because of several gift cards and a store credit with Best Buy which made its price more reasonable. The board is somewhat of an overkill board for what I was looking for, but worth it in the end due to the overall quality.

    Hey Jay, love your channel!!
    I just built my first pc and I was planning to go matx case and mobo. I bought a B550M Steel Legend and an AMD 3950x. The case I end up buying was a mid tower ATX, so it turns out I could have gone for an ATX mobo. (At the time there was only one x570M option.) Should I keep this setup or is it worth upgrading to an x570? I'm a video editor and although I'm not to familiar with the whole overclocking thing, I feel like it would be a good option to get the best out of my CPU. I'm currently having huge issues with my pc, with crashing, freezing, video issues, while I am editing in Premiere, but that's another story.
    Thanks!

    Great video as always. The MOBO is the only part i still need to put the whole awesome rig together. I saved it for last because of my severe lack of knowledge . Have settled on a couple different x570s or a higher end b550 like the master versions. Over the past two weeks though the price for every single board i have been looking at has skyrocketed. Accross evey retailer too. Ive only been looking for the past three months or so. Is this a regular occurrence? Do the prices fluctuate by more than 30 percent week to week month to month. Im being patient but I have 80 percent of an awesome PC still brand new in boxes and its driving me nuts.

    I'll tell you one reason for the 550: The lack of chipset fan! I recently did a "silent" build with a Be Quiet! case, power supply, and cooler. They're almost completely silent and due to me having 3 fans on the Dark Rock Pro 4 they all spin at low RPMs and my Ryzen 3950x stays super cool even when working hard. Well I'll tell you I Certainly hear that X570 motherboard PCH fan whirring away at 2800 rpm! It looks like such a little fan doesn't it? Being a recording studio and doing audio production and need a quiet pc.
    -
    Also in the studio business we tend to use our PCs 8 years or more because it takes alot of work to get a stable system with all the plugins and hardware you need. Then that exact system is required to re-open old projects. A moving part like an extra and tiny fan is the death of that system. It will probably wear out first and is not easily replaced like a case fan. Besides the quietness and quality of the Be Quiet! stuff I bought them (especially the cooler) because the fan's lifespan is 300,000 hours. The Chipset fan is only 60,000 and with it going 2800 rpm all the time It's probably less. It's basically a time limit on that system, and creates extra noise to boot. Gamers and enthusiasts don't want an 8 year old system. Studio people might buy a newer computer but still keep their old systems around and functioning, to re-enact old projects, use old software and hardware when they need to. As well as my newer stuff I sometimes still use my year 2000 G4 macbook because it's the only thing that will run certain programs.
    I wouldn't buy the dated 450 or 470 because we keep systems so long. I would buy the newer because it gives that much more longevity, and future upgrade-ability. The B550 also has two M.2 slots where the 450 only has one and it's too close to the CPU. I'd rather the major heat source be as far as possible from my working system data which is worth much more than the computer to me.

I have pot for the fan speed of CPU cooler and PSU is near silent style. Setting up sensitive analyzer mic and checking out what is the level of background noise and more importantly being aware what is the noise's frequency profile can make wonders by revealing culprits. Db meters are useless(or bad joke) in such audio recording studio context.

      PCIe 4 doesn't matter now, but it will have some effect 3-4 years down the line... but a lot of people would replace their PC before that point anyway, so for them there's no point in getting a B550 unless they're putting a Ryzen 9 in it and have a really good cooler which would make a 4-phase VRM the limiting factor to performance. Basically, I mostly agree with you, but I think it would be more like 20-30% of people who would benefit from a B550 over a B450. Still not the majority though.

      @@nathangamble125 Even a 2080ti doesn't saturate pci-e 3.0 8x except in very specific synthetic loads where you are purposely trying to bottleneck it, so other than storage and like 40 gig lan over a 1x slot you won't need pci-e 4.0 for like 14 more years given an average gpu cycle of 2 years and that is still only if you are running the top tier card ie your 80ti's. We only get 15-25% performance increases per generation of gpu's. Most people won't even saturate pci-e 2.0 16x by that time, realistically most people have low or end or on board graphics and even most gamers are running mid tier hardware at best, from my experience and what I have heard from others, never seen a ryzen board that wasn't discount trash have a bad vrm solution, bad vrm's on motherboards has been a thing of the past for like 10 years now unless you are buying shady no name brand 30 dollar motherboards. Also don't knock a 4 phase vrm asus and msi have come out with some really good 4 phase power delivery designs, mind you using top tier vrm's. chokes and caps, that being said I've seen shit 12+4 vrm's in the past. The problem for b450 is the BIOS update, JTC already said that BIOS update is dangerous and has a potential to brick your entirely mobo if you don't do it properly. For enthusiast, that's not a problem, but for a normal consumer, it's actually quite risky. So my suggestion is the same as JTC, buy x570 if you want to buy ryzen 4000 series later, buy b550 if you manage to find a very good deal, and just buy b450 if you are okay with a dead chipset and just want to buy a budget PC and not really care about upgradeability.

    I had debated the whole "G" processor thingy, to get the "G" or not. SOOOO glad I got the "G". I have our GeForce GTX 970 GAMING 4G Golden Edition's connected to DisplayPort on a Samsung 32" Odyssey G5, and the integrated X570 and cpu Vega 8 graphics connected to HDMI. Absolutely sweet for alt tabbing out of all our Blizzard games. Made a lot of rash and informed decisions watching JayzTwoCents. Keep up the reviews Jayz!

When you do splash the cash somewhere, you can almost guarantee next month something big and shiny is coming out or you could have saved $XXX. Save your money, keep an eye out for deals, don't sweat the small stuff. These days in particular, I'd say figure out what your budget is, save the money up front, then shop. If you have to buy things piecemeal, you're likely to run into buying stuff that you wish you hadn't and you either have to buy the component again, or be locked into something you don't want now. Good luck.

I only grasp about 5% of what you were talking about but what I did understand is that you know your stuff. So without asking you to build it for me, I think I want a 570 board? I think I’d like the M.2?PCIe? drives.

    Seems like it comes down to if you want pcie 4.0 for more devices (NVME/video/etc) and more usb 3/3.1 ports. Honestly if you are never going to upgrade your storage and don't have a bunch of usb 3.1 devices you can get either a cheap b550 board or go with a more deluxe model. Personally I always add more storage is seams so being able add more pcie 4.0 nvme storage is going to be in the future. Prices are a bit odd as he mentioned as the big price difference is between standard/low end boards and deluxe mega boards. It still comes down to actual slots.
    One thing to consider that I have noticed also is better boards (b550 or x570) has built in nvme heat spreaders many with fans. Something to think about for extended nvme performance which may make the extra costs worth it anyways.

    Hello, very informative video !
    I have updated bios on my ASROCK TAICHI X470 board to run my new Ryzen 7 5700x + MSI Gaming Trio X RTX3090.
    Question 1: What performance and features am i missing from a x570 mainboard ?
    I replaced my old G.skills DDR4 3000 Mhz with new G.Skills Ripjaw DDR4 4400Mhz.
    The XMP is bootloop so the maximum i am allowed to run this ram is set manually at 4133Mhz as if i set it higher, it bootloops and resets it to 2666Mhz. I noticed that CL latencies on that frequency are automatically set to alot higher than the specifications of the ram stick.
    Question 2: if i get a new x570 mainboard, will my ram work at 4400Mhz with its correct cl latencies ?
    Any advice would be appreciated !
    Thank you all for reading :)

    • @willc1294
      @willc1294 Před 2 lety +1

      Well I just got a ROG STRIX B550-E gaming for €200 in europe. The ROG STRIX X570-E board costs 50% more (almost €300). I'm putting a build together with a 5600X, RTX 3070, 32GB ddr4 3600 ram and a crucial P5 SSD. There's a gen 4 PCI slot for the GPU which is fine, also one of the m2 slots is gen 4 which I don't even need since the P5 is gen 3.
      Spending an extra €100 for something that probably won't change performance in any noticeable way for me seems pointless tbh.

    • @RAW_Reality
      @RAW_Reality Před 4 lety +17

      Problem is, #1) it's "new", so there's that premium, #2) this is probably the first video coverage about the compromises the b550 boards have that's came out, and "with everyone waiting so long for it to come out", they're already selling out at their current prices because of panic buyers, and #3) few people actually do enough researching this kind of stuff before just jumping head first into buyer's remorse (which is _exactly_ what caused the backlash of Zen3 support for b450/70).
      But the actual "answer" to your question is "yes, they should", but it's unlikely to happen because of those 3 things...
      Imagine what'd take place if the next iPhone came out and it absolutely sucked... All those droves of people that just "have to have the lastest and greatest", only to run face-first into a brick wall... You think the b450/70 backlash was bad... 😅

I bought a X570 that can be flashed without RAM and a CPU via a USB thumb drive. Super easy and up and running on the cheap. Don't spend extra on a X570 that can be overclocked as 5600X has no headrooom.

  • @josefranciscodavidmontoya5764

    Hi. I noticed the x570 motherboard had only one video (HDMI) port. Most mobos (both Intel & AMD) I saw before had HDMI+DVI+VGA, permitting up to 3 monitors. • @Alovon
    @Alovon Před 3 lety +8

    -Note about PCI-E 4.0, I think we will reach a point on PC where you'll need a PCI-E 4.0 SSD before a PCI-E 4.0 GPU for optimal performance on games due to PS5 and Xbox Series X/S using said PCI-E 4.0 SSDs.
    -Especially in the PS5's case, games that are released on only it then ported to PC, or have optimized for the PS5's SSD will gain massive loading/world LOD improvements via having said PCI-E 4.0 SSD vs a SATA SSD, or an Average NVME 3.0 (Average 3.0 goes around 1-2GB/s read/write, PCI-E 4.0's lowest is 4.5 GB/s Read/Write on the Corsair, which is not the one you should buy due to that, and it's the price being higher than 5gb/s read-write drives like the saberent rocket PCI-E 4.0)
    -And based on current performsnce projections, and how the TITAN RTX does push to saturate a PCI-E 3.0 8x slot, I wouldn't be surprised if Ampere and Navi 2's strongest flavors push PCI-E 3.0 to near-full saturation, which means the next-generation cards likely would start going to PCI-E 4.0 at the high end.
    -And that's not even considering cases like the RX 5500XT having its memory hamstrung by PCI-E bandwidth (likely by its own internal bus, but the case is still one that should be noted), which we likely could see occur even with Ampere and Navi 2 before the raw GPU Cores hit 3.0 16x saturation.
