The livestock that takes up the least amount of space on the homestead and so productive and so delicious. Not to mention, quail is a wonderful food source for your family and quail eggs have a higher nutritional value and more protein. While it does take 3 quail eggs to make up 1 chicken egg, many people that are unable to eat chicken eggs are able to eat quail eggs.
So let's get started and . . .

Finally!!! someone who is able to give thoroughly thought out, detailed instructions as well as a written version and a materials list. Great video ! Went down to home depot today with my 7 year old grandaughter, and purchased my supplies to build this!... plan on a little project raising some quail with her.....thanks for the video.... I'm so excited that you and your granddaughter are taking on this project together. Grandkids, they are amazing little things aren't they? My granddaughter, age 6, loves to gather the quail eggs; she finds them fascinating.
As for the incubator, I use the Farm Innovator 4230 and it's okay. It's the only incubator that I have any experience with and I really feel like it could be better. I've hatched two batches of quail (first shipped, second from our quail) and both times our hatch rate ran between 50 and 55%. On the second batch we had a 87% fertilization so I really feel like the incubator was a factor in how many actually hatched. We have had the same numbers with our chicken hatches unless we put them under a hen where our hatch rate is upper 90's. So I know it's not a fertilization factor.
I would recommend perhaps getting involved with some groups on FB to see what is working best for others. I need to do that myself but really can't afford a new incubator just yet.
I can tell you this though. My incubator came with chicken egg rails so I had to order quail egg rails separately which I got from Amazon.

I've got the whole frame built and ready, took about 2 hours total. I know it's not much but I intentionally ordered the hardware cloth, hinges, and latches from your Amazon links. Out of curiosity I checked the prices at Lowe's and the hardware cloth was twice the price, and they didn't even have stainless hinges or latches and the Zinc stuff was a buck more than the stainless. Great video, very much appreciated!

Nice set up. I have a 16x2 size quail cage with a 2x2 space I keep sand for them. I wish I had it in me to ☠️them for eating unfortunately I just can’t do it. But the eggs are a nice addition to my chicken eggs. 👍🏼

May we assume you used 1/2 mesh for the floor? Nice job, fixin' to build one but will be outside so using pressure treated 2x4 for the 4 legs for added weight/strength/ stability. Also gonna be double wide, 2 cages on each level, maybe one big grow out cage on the bottom.

Hi! Thank you for the directions on building the quail cage, super helpful! What do you use for your dust baths? Sand? Dirt? It seems to be pretty pricey if you buy it specifically for quail, just looking for some ideas. Thank you again!!
We live in Florida so I just used sand out of the yard. But you can use builders sand that you can buy at Home Depot or Lowe’s. Use to it wasn’t very reasonable to purchase but I haven’t priced it in a long time. Use a kitty scoop to clean the pans and then just freshen with a little sand. It should last a good while for you. I don’t. I’ve never used nesting boxes in these cages but I do add a sand box which they love.
I saw a trick today not to spilt your wood. Put your drill on reverse . Once the screw in a bit. Then reverse the drill. Screw in your screw. Especially on thin boards. Glenn

Is your barn open on one side only? Curious about light/wind protection.
There was about. 15’ opening which gave them plenty of light and they were back far enough from it that they were shaded. As for the wind, they don’t seem to mind it. We had a big fan that we used for them when it was hot out and they loved it. They would sit along the cage facing it. They are a wild bird so I really don’t think the elements bother them much. When it gets really cold, which it does for about two weeks in winter here, we add hay so they can snuggle up together and they love that too.

Hi. I’m finishing up the cage today. But I was wondering if you but hardware cloth to make a “roof” to the middle and lower level. When I remove the pans these two lower are open on the top.
Yes, I just leave them open between the levels but use plywood on top of the cage. When you remove the trays it’s not for long and I haven’t had any quail pooped on yet, but if I had I would sure rethink the design. It all has worked out very well for me.

Great build. My quail have taken to eating their eggs. Do you have build that has floor on an angle to get the eggs to role forward?
I have chickens that like to eat eggs but I’ve never had a quail. And I’m sorry, but I don’t have a video for the slanted floors. My flock is small so I haven’t had the need for it yet.
Thought of something. Perhaps your quail calcium deficient which is why they are eating their eggs. You can give them fresh collard greens, kale, or dandelion leaves in the cage for them to snack on. You can also hand a cuttlebone in their cage for them. You’ll find them in the bird isle for parakeets and such. I hope that helps and let me know how it goes.
I would need to have mine outside. I'm in Socal so it's not terribly cold in the winter, but we do get marine layer fog & wetness, and occasionally rain. How can this be adapted to be outside? Need a roof (so where put the bucket for gravity waterer)? If I create an enclosed space like a mini coop, will they use it? Would this coop be predator proof if it's outdoors? Mostly thinking rats, racoons and skunks...I'm in an urban backyard setting.
Rats can be a problem so take precautions for them. Raccoons can’t get through the hardware cloth but they can open latches so use something that has a safety latch. If you’re going to use the oil trays for poop pans, I’d widen the pen just enough so you can close in the opening on 3 sides and put a latched flap/door on the front so you can still remove the pans for cleaning. You can extend the roof to give them shade and protect them from when it rains. They’re wildlife so as long as they’re good stays dry they’ll be fine. The water bucket can still go on the roof as long as there aren’t any super strong winds. It’s definitely doable, just modifications needed. Best of luck!
Do you have a cage build with the slanted floor to get the eggs easy
No I don’t. My flock is small so I just go into each of the cages to collect the eggs. Plus, they lay them in their sand box often and i can check them to see if they need to be refilled at the same time. However, if I had a big production I can see how that would really be helpful.
Nice cages. I'm building mine now. What holds up your drip pans? I'm going to use plywood to hold the drip pans. I think I can keep the pans secured and still be able to keep the wood floor clean. Any suggestions?

Yes, that is true about the pans. The feeders are the 11-1/2 inch from Strombergs. There is waste. Some cages more than others. My husband a video on how he managed to reduce the waste but it didn’t eliminate it. The little buggers like to waste their food.
How many boards should I get all together without cutting them? I’m new to this and it broken down is helpful but I need to know how many boards to buy total at Lowe’s without them being cut
In between the cages, where the poop tray goes, is there any wire? Is the tray supposed to act as a roof? What's to keep the quail in while the tray is removed?

That’s an awesome hatch rate. Good for you!
And yes, the trays act as a roof and when I take them out, they’re only out long enough to dump and refill. You could purchase some extras for when you want to wash the trays or rig something up that you’ve got around. I’ve really had a quail pooped on and the quail somehow flicks it out around the cage some anyway. Just let it dry and sweep up. Occasionally we give it a good mopping.

Does anyone have the actual full length 2x4s that would be needed and cut down the middle and reduce cost? For example 1 -2x4 at 8’ would give me 2 - 96” pieces.
If I understand you correctly, you can cut 2x4’s down the middle which would be cheaper than purchasing 2x2’s. I purchased my 2x2’s from Lowe’s but if you have a sawmill near you, you can probably get them even cheaper there.
Hi do you have the measurements for the bigger cage on the back?
It is 6’ x 2’. Just twice the the size of the three tier and two levels instead of three I use it for grow outs. Boys on one level and girls on the other.

Each cage and the drip pan is 2’ x 3’ and 6 birds fit comfortably in each (1 male and 5 females).

I got them from Advanced Auto and Auto Zone. I have included links to them in many of my quail videos.
I went back through and found them. I used plastic pans for a dog kennel in my first build. Looking to try the metal!
If you can find plastic the right size, it would probably be better. We love the metal pans but they did start to rust. After 3 years they still working and haven’t rusted through though.
Would you happen to have a video of the larger cages?
I don’t, but the build is the same just longer and with 2 levels rather than the 3. The grow out is 2’ x 6’. I hope that helps.

What size screws are you using for the 1x2s?
2-1/2” wood screws. Pre-drilled, glued, and then use 1 screw in each corner. Staples hardware cloth and then used the 2-1/2” wood screws to attached to cage for easy removal and cleaning.
@@SimplyMadeHomestead I used 3" for the load bearing part of frame, then 2-1/2" for rest. 1x2's I used 2".
I’m wondering on wood dimensions as far as 2x2 goes or 1x2 are these both true size or can I rip a 2x4 and make my 2x2 which then it’s not actually 2x2. Will this change measurement largely ?
You can definitely rip 2x4’s in half and just measure as you go when you need to. In some spots it will probably change the measurements up slightly but as long as you measure before you cut, you’ll be fine.

@@wilso205110 absolutely, and it usually comes out cheaper that way too. You should be fine to go by my measurements on the frame but you may need to add a 1/4” between levels to accommodate a real 2x2.
How many feet of hardware cloth did you use?
Approximately 108 feet so you need a 50 ft roll of hardware cloth if you purchase a 24” width roll. If you purchase a 4’ (width) roll, a 25’ roll will work.
I do use the 1/2” 19 gauge hardware cloth. I hope this helps.

Cool cages, but how do you get the floors out when the back of the hutch is enclosed with hardware cloth?
Just slide them out the front.

I don’t. My flock is small so I just go in to get the eggs and it gives me a better look at my quail to make sure all is well. If I had a big production I’m sure I would.

I bought mine from Advanced Auto and Auto Zone. A few months ago they were $11 to $12 a piece.

I don’t but just double the material list in the description and you’ll be fine. It will be a little less than doubled but you’ll have extra for other projects.

Good question, sorry I didn’t think of that. Its’s 6’ wide and 2’ deep.
Do they stay in there their whole life? How long is their lifespan? I’m new to homesteading and this will be my first project.
Their lifespan is 2 yrs but we raise them to eat so typically they’re in the cages for anywhere from 6 months to a year. Extra males are dispatched at 8 to 10 weeks.
What kind of sand do you use for them?
Builders sand. You can get it at any hardware store.
The quail are able to utilize the hanging feeders through the hardware cloth??
You have to cut a hole for the feeders to go into. Go to our playlist under raising quail and you’ll find a video on how to install them.

Were do you get the poop tray
Advanced Auto and Auto Zone. They are actually drip trays.
23:55 ok, I have a question. You don’t screen in the place where the poo tray sits? You just run a board across for more stability. I have already built mine to your specifications and I’m wondering what is there to keep an animal from just lifting that poop tray and sliding in, such as a mouse a rat or a weasel?
The floor above is screened and the tray covers the level below.
Not if the tray has rounded edges. If the tray is square then maybe but a tray with rounded edges leaves the quail in danger of predators
We haven’t had any problems. You can certainly put wire across there if you feel you need to.
@@SimplyMadeHomestead the problem is once the cage is built to your specs it’s impossible to add wire the that very small poo gap area. I suggest anyone building this add wire to the top of each cage where there is a poo tray or you will have some very dead backyard quail. I do appreciate your replies and love your videos thank you.

Me too. I think wind and rain needs consideration too: wet food, quail won't lay of windy.
Hard to find info for outside predator protection: raccoon, coyote,fox, snakes, mice.
I’m actually looking into building an outside place for me but not ready to do so just yet. I’d really like for them to have a more natural housing.
With our chickens we use 1/4” hardware cloth and run it 2 feet out from the pen so if anything tries to dig under they hit the wire. We stake it down with garden staples and then the grass grows through it and you don’t even know it’s there. Put a roof on and it’s in good shape. We did have a snake once but nothing else has made its way in.
I didn’t know that about the wind though. We have them in the garage right now and leave the door open during the day. Before they were in this big shop, huge front opening with no door. Plus I’d run the fan for them when it’s hot which they really enjoyed. They’ve always laid well.
@@SimplyMadeHomestead Thanks! I should have said I heard JManRandom say that about the wind...I have no experience with quail. Maybe it is the noise from the wind. I don't know.
@@SimplyMadeHomestead Oh I'm designing an outdoor version with all the best features from all the designs I have found: outdoor, no barn needed, preditor/wind/rain/shade protection, uses inexpensive material, sloped cages, wide doors, back to back & 2 layer to save space& fencing, poop trays. I get 64 sqfeet in a 4x8' footprint.

No I don’t, the trays cover the top. Works out great.

@@aneloperez4610 Approximately 108 feet so you need a 50 ft roll of hardware cloth if you purchase a 24” width roll. If you purchase a 4’ (width) roll, a 25’ roll will work.
I do use the 1/2” 19 gauge hardware cloth. I hope this helps.

Would pressure treated lumber harm the birds?
I don’t think so if they’re kept in a well ventilated are but I’d do some research on it first. It will be much heavier though.
